I have 4 drives on my mac pro and tons of folders, some with sub folders. I need a searchable listing of all folders and sub folders to consolidate, re-organize, etc. I don't mind buying a utility but would like something that can do all of the above and either let me search and organize the list or let me dump it into Excel.

Is there a way to list every file on the computer by size? I'm trying to see what's taking up so much space. I have a 15" unibody mbp with a 320 gb hd and I only have like 30 gb left ... i use fcp and tried cleaning out all the capture scratch folders i don't need . but i want to list it all if possible.

I bought a Seagate Free Agent Go Flex External drive. I transferred all my files from my previous external HD. When I went to access my folders on my external HD, the folders are all locked, with Sharing and Permission section in the Information "Everyone: Read" only! I can't change any of the information or move things! All of them are locked and "read only." I know how to change it, but only manually, individually. I have several hundreds of folders and I don't want to manually change all of them to "Read & Write." Is their a way to let me re-set the folders to "Read & Write" easily??

I have a question for the the Safari geeks out here (1.1.1 version 100.1, running on MacOSX 10.3.2): I have imported my bookmarks from a Mozilla install on a Linux box, based on a hint I found here with the debug options (worked great!!!), and I have the following questions related to adding a new bookmark (based on the fact that my bookmarks are organized in multi-level folders, e.g. OperatingSystems->Linux->Security->Firewall, etc.):
- when opening Bookmarks->Add bookmark ..., how could I possibly collapse all the levels, so that I can easily scroll, and open/drill down into the appropriate level of bookmarks, without having to scroll thrrough all (by default) expanded levels? ... especially critical as some sub-categories may match names, with different higher level bookmarks, thus having to make sure I am where I want to be (e.g. I have a Security folder under OS->Mac, as I have one under OS->Linux, and I have to remember which one I am under, if the "parent" is out of the scrolling window);
- is there any easy way to add a new "level/folder", through Bookmarks->Add bookmark, at the time of salvaging a new one, vs. having to open the Bookmarks in a new window, adding the folder, then returning to add the new bookmark?

I just can't figure this out. I have several external drives I use to edit video. Most are 1TB drives, and I recently got a couple 3TB drives I was hoping to use to consolodate my scratch drives and reorganize my footage, etc. Ideally, I'd like to just be able to drag the entire contents of the smaller drive over to the bigger one, but I can't, because I keep getting error messages. Sometimes it's "Cannot complete, [file name] is in use" or I get an "error -50" code.
Before I began the copy, I formatted the destination drive in Mac OS Extended (journaled), and zeroed out the data to protect against bad sectors. I've scanned the drives since to determine if there are any verification issues (no), and I've tried turning off icon preview and the preview pane, none of it solves the problem. What the eff is going on here??
(I'm using all firewire800 drives. Currently several LaCie and Western Digital drives, but only trying to copy one at a time)

View 6 Replies View Relatedive googled everywhere for this type of process; whether it be an application or a bunch of scripts that would be able to do this, it didnt help me at all and/or i didnt understand it at all. is there a simple application that will allow me to plug in my usb drive and it will seamlessly sync with the "documents" and "pictures" folders, for example. basically, i want it to act like im syncing my iphone with my computer: how it automatically updates every time i plug in my iphone. also, i want the program to update the old files with newer, updated files, whether it was updated on my computer, or from another computer saved on the usb drive. basically (again), i want my usb flash drive to be exactly verbatim with the personalized selected folders on my macbook pro (with the older files updated with the newly modified files).
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to do a favour for a friend. She has a 320Gb external WD hard drive which she used on her Macbook to backup with Time Machine. It is not partitioned and she keeps the "Backups.backupdb" folder with other personal folders she throws in there. Recently she sold her Macbook and all that was left was this hd. She now only has access to her work pc but it won't recognize her hd as she's apparently formatted it with option "Mac OSX Journaled". So she gave me her hd to backup and then format to FAT32.
I've been a Mac for a long time but have never used Time Machine, I simply copy my important files into an external hd as I feel it's cleaner and I've never really had HD problems with any Macs I owned. So basically I have no idea how this works. I managed to copy all of her personal folders into my hd as well as the one labeled "Latest" on the Backups.backupdb folder ("Latest" is actually an alias). But I can't seem to be able to copy the rest of the backup folders. I can copy them into my computer hard drive, but each folder (I'm talking about the ones labeled with dates, there are 35 of them) is around 70Gb. Now, of course that doesn't make any sense, as it would be impossible to have 35 folders of 70Gb each in a 320Gb hd. I can only assume they use aliases as well, but when I try to copy them individually or as a whole (enclosing folder) Finder says I have no space available for that (even though I have more than 320Gb available).
Now, in my mind it's completely idiotic to keep any folders other than the Latest one. She doesn't even own a Mac anymore. But she's freaking out that I'm going to lose her entire life (she's that kind of person). I don't want to open the Time Machine app because like I said I don't use it on my computer and these are not my files, so I do not in any way want to sync with this hard drive or backup to it. I'm on a 21" 500Gb iMac running 10.7.3.

I have folders apperaing in all of my documents folders. I can not click on them. They are typically called "folders," "PDF Documents," & "Speadsheets"

I have all my media on an external Firewire 800 drive. On that drive i have multiple folders and sub folders. The problem is when I click on any of those folders it open the contains in a new window, rather than letting me just click through. it's frustrating as I can end up with half a dozen windows open to get to one file. This only happens on external drives. Is there a way to fix this?

Deleting a single message or folder works fine. However, when I try to delete a folder with subfolders, even though I reply to the 'are you sure' message by clicking "yes," the folder and subfolders initially disappear yet, immediately upon refresh, all folders and subfolders reappear and I find that the instruction has been completely ignored.

I'm trying to copy folders from my Macbook Air's hard drive to my Google Drive app. The folders are newer versions of what's on Google Drive - ie it contains much the same stuff but some extra files and maybe some updated files.
However, the only options it gives me when copying are "Replace," "Don't Replace" or "Stop" (and from what I can tell, those latter two do exactly the same thing - or should I say, don't do the same thing... I mean they both just cancel the copy).
I was sure there used to be an option "Merge" which skips anything identical and replaces only new or edited files. This is the exact thing I want to do! But is that option gone? Or is there a way I can get it back? (I can't find any way to bring it back in the system preferences).
I could just hit "Replace" (and I will in the meantime), but there are two problems with that: 1) that will get annoying when files and folders are large; 2) more pressingly, that will muck up the sharing permissions. There's a particular sub-folder that I currently have shared on Google Drive with specific people, and I don't want to override that folder with one that's identical in everything except the all-important sharing settings.

When I expand the Sent folder in Mail (directly below inbox), all my email folders from my yahoo mail account are there plus Sent.I also have all the same folders listed below that under my email address including sent and sent messages. Some outgoing messages are in "Sent" folder and some in "Sent Messages" folder.Not sure how this happened but I can not delete the folders under sent. I am hesitant to delete the Sent folder.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have a Mac Mini running OSX 10.9.3/Server 3.1.2 and a MacBook Pro with OSX 10.9.1. Recently I have noticed that files I create on the laptop are being automatically deleted. I have literally watched them disappear while I watch. The entire folder contents seem to be stuck at a point in time about 8 days ago. If I restore a file or subfolder from the trash, it disappears again within a few minutes.
The account in question is a mobile account. I have set HomeSync to sync manually, so I don't think that is the problem. There are no other folder sync (rsync, etc.) daemons running that I am aware of. TimeMachine is set up on the laptop but the remote disk is full and I need to start a new back up set (or get a bigger disk.)

This week I bought mij first macbook pro. so I new in osx. I have a ubuntu 14.04 server running with samba 4.1.6. From a Windows or linux computer is can acces the shares just fine.
When i try to acces the share from my macbook i can open the share but when I try to open an folder with allot of files/folders the is empty in finder, i thought first it was a performance issue so I've waited for 30 minutes but still empty. smaller Folders ik can open in finder.
In console there his no error on the server the logfile has also no error...
I am using Mail from my 15", late 2012, 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7 MBP running Maverick OSX 10.9.5 with 16 GB memory. I have 4 mail accounts with approximately 30 folders. Everything has worked fairly good the past year, with a bump here and there. Suddenly today nearly all mail in these folders has disappeared. There are a few folders that have retained all their mail, however the majority is gone. Is there a remedy or is it gone? Rebuild has done no good.

Sometimes, it's not just folders, it's files too. Sometimes in non-mac sources, like my SMART TV, I see files named .filename.mp4 along with filename.mp4. And these fraudulent files are really bothering. And the worst part, I can't see them in Finder. remove the .file.mp4.
I used the term 'filename.mp4' to represent an MP4 video file. But the files that have a . before them need to be deleted.
A few days ago, I started being unable to move files from one folder to another in Finder or on my Desktop, using a drag and drop motion. I can move the files if I copy and paste them from one folder to the next, but that is incredibly laborious. I have not changed any of my user settings lately, so why this is happening all of a sudden.
I am currently using OS x 10.9.4.
