OS X :: Darwin Available As Source Code Except For The ARM Variant
Jun 28, 2010
Wikipedia, on their page about Darwin (the operating system at the core of Mac OS X), says:Quote:p to Darwin 8.0, Apple released a binary installer (as an ISO image) after each major Mac OS X release that allowed one to install Darwin on PowerPC and Intel x86 computers as a standalone operating system. Minor updates were released as packages that were installed separately. Darwin is now only available as source code,[4] except for the ARM variant, which has not been released in any form separately from iPhone OS.

I'm interested in running a Darwin OS, basically just the open source parts of Mac OS X. There isn't a whole lot of recent information that I've been able to find on my own. Seems like most sources top out at Darwin 8.

I have been using a PC to design web sites for years, but I recently purchased a MacBook Pro to use instead. On my Windows computer, I would use NotePad to create and edit .html files, which I could then just save and open in a browser. I have been trying to use TextEdit in the same way, but it doesn't appear to be working ... I just write the code into the app and then save it as an HTML file, but when I try to open it, what displays in my browser window is just the text.

I just recently bought a new G5, so I started to use iWeb and at first I was impressed with it, but I am used to working on Macromedia Dream Weaver.
Anyways, I could not find a way to view my source code in iWeb to make changes that aren't possible normally. I wanted to put some PHP and counter code.
How do you view the source code of the HTML using iWeb ?

I've been having problems with Safari 4 since I upgraded to Snow Leopard. Any page that displays HTML source code in a standard page jumbled up. It is not rendering the page correctly, although if I copy the scrambled text to another program it displays correctly. This only effects Safari and other browsers are okay. Does anyone have a suggestion how I can reinstall safari / reset?? The screenshots above are from a Joomla Edit HTML page but this also happens on other pages such as where they show sample HTML code tutorials.

I recently got a 13.3 with 4 gigs of ram, and lemme preface this by saying that it is a phenomenal computer. I have an ipad, and using airdisplay to do wireless dual monitors is a sight to behold.
However, I've noticed a rather disturbing battery drain on my MBA. It came at about 86% charged, and after a full charge I've noticed fairly significant battery drain. I didn't time anything, but it hit ~50% battery after an evening of really sparse usage (brightness 50%, wifi on, no mp3s playing, click2flash installed and no flash content used).
I figured it was first day jitters and recharged it to full, then watched a single video on hulu with flash enabled and full screened at the same 50% brightness with 80% sound. After a 3 minute video, I was already down to 97%. Then I searched online for average battery life, finding out that it was capable of handling 11.2 hours of light browsing usage from anandtech. This took a max of an additional 10 minutes, which dropped the battery to 95% (no flash was on and hulu was closed). I shut the lid and opened it again this morning after 8 hours of standby and it was at 94%.
I don't feel very confident that this MBA can last half the day if I was using it non stop, let alone a full 11.2 hours. I want to know if this is a battery defect on my own laptop and warrants a replacement, or if this is the status quo.
In fact, in the time it took me to type this post on my desktop computer, my macbook air has dropped down another % to 93% with absolutely nothing running and no active use.

I recently made 2 hackintoshes. Now I was trying to get the AMD kernel for my hp in my office, but i ran into a little trouble. 2 days ago, I backed up my mac with time machine. Anyway, I was messing around with it, and I guess it thought my mac was a hackintosh, and it came with that nice wonderful welcome screen movie when u first get ur mac when I logged out. I had typed up a letter to a pen pal for school earlier, and hadnt backed up since before that letter. So I went into my windows 7 partition, and I tried to access my files from there, but when I went into macintosh hd, users, my account, it said there weren't any files. Now this means that this hackintosh kernel deleted my mac account.
Anyway I booted from the disk and it took an extremely long time to boot, and it take an extremely long time to boot into macintosh hd. Now if any of you are familiar with reinstalling the windows bootloader on a pc using vista or 7, then you might be able to relate. I kinda need the mac version of that boot into disk go to command prompt and type
bootrec /fixmbr
bootrec /fixboot
to reinstall the Darwin Bootloader. It takes like 3 minutes to get off the apple logo, and before it took like 30 seconds.

I recently downloaded the Darwin Ports package from the website and ran it, the install reads that everything installed correctly, and the website informed me that once the process was complete, I should run sudo port -d selfupdate, however, all I'm getting is an error that reads "sudo: ports: command not found".

I accidentially started the Darwin/BSD (apple darwin 7.0) program. It didn't crash or anything. When I go to log in to OS X it takes me directly to the Darwin Unix window and asks me to log in there.and into the computer. If I type in (exit) it takes me right back to the same place.I put in the Panther install disc (held down the c key) and selected to boot up on system 9.9.2 so I can use the computer and research online.

The weirdest thing has happened to my MacBook. It was running a little slow today so I restarted it thinking it would help clear out the memory and whatnot. When I restarted it, everything seemed normal. It makes the classic "mac soud" and shows the apple with the circular loading wheel. It then goes to the login screen, just as it normally does. However, once it goes to the login screen, the spinning beachball comes up and it freezes temporarily. This is when it starts to get bad. The screen then goes black and comes up with white letters saying: Darwin/BSD (my name's Computer.) (console) login: sometimes, I have time to type in my username and password, sometimes not. Either way, the following comes up: disk0s2: 0xe0030005 (UNDEFINED)
it then goes back to the login screen, which completly freezes every time. I am completly frustrated and terrified that I will not be able to access my data, which includes over 2 years of music, pictures etc. that have not been backed up. Does anyone know what is going on with my MacBook?

I'm trying to learn how to build applications from source on Mac OS 10.5.7, and I'm not really sure how to do it. What do you do with files that look like 'filename.tar.gz' or 'filename.tar.bz2'.
How do you install these and build them on your computer?

I am just wondering why, when I close the lid, it makes a ticking noise. It is as if something is stuck in the hinges but I've checked and cleaned it and it seems fine. Anyone else had this problem or know how I should fix it? It used to be smooth and ticking-noise-free, but now its gone funny.

So I turned on my Macbook Pro today and this clicking noise is coming from the rightmost fan hole. I am really nervous that it is a serious issue as I use my Macbook for probably 15 hours a day for all sorts of artistic ventures.
After exploring, I've discovered with I use it on certain angles, the clicking stops, or increases/decreases in noisiness
Anybody have experience with this? Is there a way to clean it of the issue?
I haven't had any problems with my system before, and the computer itself is operating perfectly

System: uMB 2.4/4GB Ram, October 2008, running 10.6. In the past couple days, I've all-of-a-sudden noticed that I'm receiving incoming network traffic; sometimes it's 300-400kbps, sometimes it's almost 1Mbps. It'll occasionally stop for a period of a few seconds to a minute, then pick up again. Disconnecting the computer from the network will stop it (obv), but it picks right up immediately upon reconnecting.
No programs are running that would seem to cause this behavior. Nothing is being downloaded (I mostly do that on a separate machine anyways) and nothing is running when this begins that would lean me towards a problem. Switching from a wired connection to a wireless connection does stop the download completely, which lends me to think that this is most likely an attack on that IP, though I can't find a way to be sure or to even look further on that idea.

I was wondering, if my specific Macbook will run CounterStrike: Source and approximately how well. I just bought a Macbook Pro - Specs are here: [URL] Or
In a nutshell:
# 2.53GHz Intel Core 2 Duo
# 4GB 1066MHz DDR3 SDRAM - 2x2GB
# 250GB Serial ATA Drive @ 5400 rpm
Essentially, I would use Crossover or BootCamp (But have had bad experience with it in removing it).

Okay, simple summary; I've got an external drive that I use for downloading large files, and for music (to reduce activity on my main drives), and this is exclusively used by Transmission (bittorrent), and iTunes as a result. However, very rarely I can hear the disk thrashing away, and this will continue even after I quit both programs, the only way I can seem to make it stop is by unmounting the drive and remounting it again.

There is a program called ATP which is short for "Alternative Transients Program" that I need to use for my work. The developers are extremely protective of this software even though it is free to use. You have to send a signed contract agreement to them through snail-mail before you can get a password to the site to download the program. This program is only available for Windows and Linux. There is no alternative for OSX. Can I somehow use the source for Linux to compile and run on OSX? Obviously Fink isn't going to work because of the licensing it can't be added as a package to the repositories. running it through Linux or Windows with an emulator?

I use the Dvorak keyboard setup as my input source, and never change it. Recently my machine has started spontaneously switching back to the standard U.S. keyboard -- distracting, to say the least, when I suddenly get weird windows opening or gibberish appearing in documents. This has happened in both Mail and Mellel (a 3rd-party word processor) so far. I can't find anything about this problem in the forums; how to re-stabilize my choice, or how to investigate it further?

Basically I am trying to convert a 2.2 GB .mov file that I shot and edited using Final Cut Prom to an MP-4 file using Handbrake. When I try to convert the file I get a message that reads. "No Valid Source Found". Why is this? I realize I can export as an MP-4 right out of Final Cut but the codecs in Final Cut aren't optimal enough to produce as high a quality video as it would be if I did a conversion using Handbrake.

I've been given (!) a G5 iMac which is practically brand new. It's only problem is that it suffers from the sudden shut off issue which seems to plague the G5 thanks to a faulty Power Supply and some caps on the mobo which get taken out by the PS. I've replace the power supply, but can't afford to get the mobo fixed, and since neither Apple nor any of the alternative operating system makers such as Linux will be supporting this system into the future, I figure that the hardware is essentially orphaned. I'd dearly like to use the screen though, as it's in great shape and is a beautiful display. So, my question is, can the internal screen be connected to an external source such as the video card of another computer? It would be great to use it for my music production machine. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. In the meantime I'm going to have a look around inside this beast and see what I can do.
