I have iMac 27" with thunderbolt connectivity in it. Is it possible to connect an external computer (with or without a converter) to use the iMac's Display? If possible, kindly let me know how.

I use the Dvorak keyboard setup as my input source, and never change it. Recently my machine has started spontaneously switching back to the standard U.S. keyboard -- distracting, to say the least, when I suddenly get weird windows opening or gibberish appearing in documents. This has happened in both Mail and Mellel (a 3rd-party word processor) so far. I can't find anything about this problem in the forums; how to re-stabilize my choice, or how to investigate it further?

I want to buy the 27" iMac - but only if I can use it as external monitor for my Lenovo laptop when working from home. A the Apple store in London they said that this is possible with a Belkin converter from hdmi to mini display port (with a USB power caple to turn it into an active signal). The laptop also has a displayport.

I have a Dell monitor which has a Display port input and I want to use it as a second monitor. The DVI input in the Dell monitor is taken up.
But how do I connect from the mini-display in the iMac to the Display port in Dell monitor ? Doesn't look like aplle sell this connector cable !

I am using the Z5500 speakers with optical cable everything works fine in OS X 10.5.7, I am booting into windows and here everything works ok, but if after windows I boot into Mac OS X its not recognize any of the output source, nothing. I must reboot again to see the speakers (internal or external)?

So I turned on my Macbook Pro today and this clicking noise is coming from the rightmost fan hole. I am really nervous that it is a serious issue as I use my Macbook for probably 15 hours a day for all sorts of artistic ventures.
After exploring, I've discovered with I use it on certain angles, the clicking stops, or increases/decreases in noisiness
Anybody have experience with this? Is there a way to clean it of the issue?
I haven't had any problems with my system before, and the computer itself is operating perfectly
System: uMB 2.4/4GB Ram, October 2008, running 10.6. In the past couple days, I've all-of-a-sudden noticed that I'm receiving incoming network traffic; sometimes it's 300-400kbps, sometimes it's almost 1Mbps. It'll occasionally stop for a period of a few seconds to a minute, then pick up again. Disconnecting the computer from the network will stop it (obv), but it picks right up immediately upon reconnecting.
No programs are running that would seem to cause this behavior. Nothing is being downloaded (I mostly do that on a separate machine anyways) and nothing is running when this begins that would lean me towards a problem. Switching from a wired connection to a wireless connection does stop the download completely, which lends me to think that this is most likely an attack on that IP, though I can't find a way to be sure or to even look further on that idea.

Essentially, I would use Crossover or BootCamp (But have had bad experience with it in removing it).
I'm interested in running a Darwin OS, basically just the open source parts of Mac OS X. There isn't a whole lot of recent information that I've been able to find on my own. Seems like most sources top out at Darwin 8.

However, very rarely I can hear the disk thrashing away, and this will continue even after I quit both programs, the only way I can seem to make it stop is by unmounting the drive and remounting it again.

The developers are extremely protective of this software even though it is free to use. You have to send a signed contract agreement to them through snail-mail before you can get a password to the site to download the program. This program is only available for Windows and Linux. There is no alternative for OSX. Can I somehow use the source for Linux to compile and run on OSX? Obviously Fink isn't going to work because of the licensing it can't be added as a package to the repositories. running it through Linux or Windows with an emulator?

I have been using a PC to design web sites for years, but I recently purchased a MacBook Pro to use instead. On my Windows computer, I would use NotePad to create and edit .html files, which I could then just save and open in a browser. I have been trying to use TextEdit in the same way, but it doesn't appear to be working ... I just write the code into the app and then save it as an HTML file, but when I try to open it, what displays in my browser window is just the text.

When I try to convert the file I get a message that reads. "No Valid Source Found". Why is this? I realize I can export as an MP-4 right out of Final Cut but the codecs in Final Cut aren't optimal enough to produce as high a quality video as it would be if I did a conversion using Handbrake.

It's only problem is that it suffers from the sudden shut off issue which seems to plague the G5 thanks to a faulty Power Supply and some caps on the mobo which get taken out by the PS. I've replace the power supply, but can't afford to get the mobo fixed, and since neither Apple nor any of the alternative operating system makers such as Linux will be supporting this system into the future, I figure that the hardware is essentially orphaned. I'd dearly like to use the screen though, as it's in great shape and is a beautiful display. So, my question is, can the internal screen be connected to an external source such as the video card of another computer? It would be great to use it for my music production machine. If anyone has any ideas, let me know. In the meantime I'm going to have a look around inside this beast and see what I can do.

Of course, this was for free, open-source software, so I know the ropes of that quite well. Parallels is giving me problems. It seems to be somewhat "disconnected" from my system: Networking is down, and the resolution doesn't adjust with the window's dimensions. What's the best way to get support for software that isn't built around a community? I expect the Parallels guys to show me the door, as I'm not using the most recent version (seems they release two new versions every year...).

It does seem like most apple computers are what some might call overpriced to begin with, but I am ok with that; you get what you pay for and i don't mind paying the mac tax. But as I purchase the odds and ends required to use my computer in the real world, it seems as if apple is taking advantage of the fact that our computers lack some of the hardware to connect with to overhead projectors, etc. (as most PCs can). I mean $29.99 for a 3 in. piece of plastic and wire???

View 3 Replies View RelatedIt seems I have to go a roundabout way in order to connect to the Internet using a USB Dial-Up modem. I thought you could double click on the Safari icon on the Dock and get connected to the Internet. But every time I try to do this, the Diagnostics page keeps cropping up. The only method I have found to get connected is thru the Network folder under System Preferences, which to me is a backhanded alternative to what should be a more direct means by clicking directly on the Safari icon. Is there something wrong with my Internet set-up causing this run around? Also, I am unclear as to whether my 20" screen is setup properly?
Is it true that in order have the sharpest screen readout/visual appearance and still cover the complete display area that everything seems actually smaller than when compared to a 17" inch display usage (which is the size of the LCD monitor I am using with a Power Mac). Finally, what is the best source to find out all about my iMac & its features? The documentation sent is very scant. Aside from the petite booklets (with same information repeated on the computer), is there any extremely pertinent guide I am overlooking that comes with the computer? Any other major sources?
My macbook is charging and it's at 33% and it says it has 7 hours remaining until it's complete. iStat tells me that my battery is still 100% with 70 cycles. My macbook is only 6 months old, and this battery issue started happening just a few days ago. Could it be the charger? sometimes I plug in the charger and the light doesn't come on sometimes. Also something odd that I noticed, when my charger isn't plugged in it still says its power source is from the power adapter. Could it be from using my parents macbook pro charger on my macbook?

I just got my brand new 17" MacBook Pro and I would like to know if there is a way to hook up my XBox 360 and a television cable to my MacBook so I can use it's screen to play games and watch TV. I honestly don't need a bigger screen to play games or watch TV on as this one is big enough. Perhaps there is some sort of device that will allow me to do this? I don't want to record anything or do any of that stuff I just want to use the screen of my computer. It would be nice if it had a high-def hook up for the X-Box but it's not necessary. I was just wondering if anything like this existed for mac.
I dont know how long this has been going on for but ive just noticed it. ONLY when the display sleeps, the upper left hand side of my 24" imac makes light ticking noises once every few seconds (its very light ticks, theyre hard to hear unless you put your ear to the computer). It doesnt occur when the screen is on and when everything is on, and it doesnt occur when the computer sleeps, it only happens when I put the display to sleep, which seems weird. I don't think its the HDD, I've checked the SMART status and all is fine, I've also checked the console. Why is this ticking noise occurring when the display sleeps and no time else and what is making it?

However if I'm at work and connect to the VPN server and then a 2nd user from work connect to the VPN then the first connection gets dropped. I'm guessing because both connections are coming from the same source IP address. Is there any way to change this behavior?
