OS X :: Booting In 32-bit And 64-bit Mode Running 10.6.4

Nov 7, 2010

I am on 10.6.4. I have learned that I can boot up in 32-bit mode by holding down the 3 and 2 keys while starting up. Is reverting back to 64-bit mode as easy as holding down the 6 and 4 key? If not, then what?

OS X :: Booting Up From A Computer In Target Disk Mode?

Jul 12, 2008

I'm just curious if it's possible to put my Mac Pro into TDM, connect it to my MacBook Pro, start it up holding option to choose a start-up disk, and use the Mac Pro's HD to boot up. I'd experiment myself, but the Mac Pro is packed at the moment, and I'd like to know if anyone knows for sure that it will or will not work before digging it out.

I didn't realize that SL automatically boots in 32 bit, even on the new iMacs. I have a core i5 with 8 gigs of RAM. Assuming I boot in 64 bit mode today, will my computer now utilize all 8 gigs? Was it only using 4 gigs in 32 bit mode? Also, will some applications not run if I boot 64 bit?

MacBook Pro :: Slow Booting And Refuses Sleep Mode

Aug 6, 2009

My MBP (about 2 years old, Santa Rosa) is having some major issues both starting up and going into sleep. First off, I'm using 10.5.8, everything's updated, I don't have a bunch of stuff on the startup processes (quicksilver and iTunes helper) and I'm plugged into a power source. When I start my computer (since yesterday) it has been taking an abnormally long time at the grey screen before the Apple, the grey screen with the apple and the rotating wheel, and then it goes to a light blue screen for 5 or so minutes (repeat: minutes) until flashing light and dark blue and finally taking me to the login. Not only that, but my computer will not go to sleep when I close the lid. Instead, the screen turns off and the hard drive and fans keep chugging. What's more annoying is when I then try to open the lid to manually turn it to sleep, the screen won't turn on. This usually requires a hard reset, which then takes 10 minutes to start up.

MacBook Pro :: Stuck In Sleep Mode After Update Now Not Booting

Jun 21, 2010

I have an older but babied 2008ish Macbook Pro. Today upgraded my 3GS to os 4 with no problem. I downloaded a couple things but didn't go crazy today. I left work and shut lid. When I got home it was stuck on the screen saver password for a long time. I turned off the unit and now it just boots to a white screen. I can boot via OSX disc but it also doesn't see HD. This is a 500gb Seagate drive and I'm screwed if it's dead. Any suggestions to at least get to my bootcamp partition?

Windows On Mac :: ClamShell Mode (Booting Into External Monitor)

Jul 24, 2010

At one point I had my external monitor set up to work with windows, so I know how, but since then I have reinstalled windows. I haven't used windows in a long time, so didn't bother setting it back up. Recently, my macbook's screen broke, I can boot into OS X fine by plugging in an external keyboard or mouse, or simply by closing the lid quickly before the primary display loads, thus booting it into clamshell mode using only an external display. I cannot however do this with windows, and since my screen is broken I cannot set the display properties as I cannot see them. Is there any way to either boot windows into clamshell mode or set the display properties using keyboard shortcuts?

Intel Mac :: Keeps Booting In Safe Mode Plus Kernel Panic?

Apr 17, 2012

a bit complicated.   I have a 3 year old iMac, Snow Leopard 10.5.2 on the dics, but I updated it so..a pretty receent version of Snow Leopard. I had had kernel panics before- it turned out to be a bad RAM chip, replaced it and it fixed the problem.

This time, I was hoping it was the same. I got a new RAM chip, swapped them out and ID'ed the bad one.  Reseated the RAM. Probelm is, when I was trying to fix the problem, I had booted in Safe Mode.  Now the iMac starts up normally- the chime, the Apple- AND the Safe Mode bar.

Which progresses for about 5 seconds before another Kernel panic descends.  This happens whether the keyboard is connected or not.  At this point the Safe Mode at startup bugs me more than the kernel panics! Sigh.

I wonder if there's any key combo on startup I could try to at least get out of Safe Mode before Kernel panic sets in.  When my laptop has a kernel panic i can usually repair with Disk repair on CD.   I realize this sounds hopeless!  And i need it repaired, but money is an issue.

MacBook Pro :: Going To Sleep When Booting / Restarting In Clamshell Mode

Jun 29, 2014

My 2.3 GHz i5 13" MacBook Pro Early 2011 goes to sleep whenever I boot it in clamshell mode with an external display, mouse and keyboard attached (it sleeps right after the boot sequence). Is there any way to prevent this, as it is very annoying when restarting.

Running OS X 10.9.3

When booting from an external firewire drive, on which I have OS X 10.9.3 installed, my Mac completes the boot sequence without going to sleep. I have run the OS X installer over my current installation, (without wiping), and the computer still goes to sleep once the boot sequence has completed.

OS X :: G5 IMac Not Booting At All Running 10.4.11

Dec 24, 2009

Have a G5 iMac (non Intel) that was running OS 10.4.11 that now won't boot. I get the chime and the Apple then blue screen where it hangs. It won't even boot from an install CD/DVD (same routine) to blue screen. I had wanted to do an archive and reinstall but couldn't get the disk to boot. I have been able to Safe Boot and view files. In Safe Boot, I've verified the hard drive (no problems detected) and Repaired Privileges, but still won't boot (blue Screen). I've tried an install disk with same result (no boot and blue screen).

I've hooked the G5 to another G5 iMac, booted the bad G5 in Target Mode. The hard drive appears on the second G5s desktop. Using CCC have cloned the hard drive to an external hard drive (now have a backup of I don't know what. During the cloning, Norton AntiVirus detected and Quarantined a virus. I've run DiskUtility from the second iMac and again found no problems with the hard drive or permissions. Should I erase the bad hard drive, reinstall system software (using an interim user). The try to migrate all the old applications and files from the clone? If not what should I do next?

PowerPC :: 12" PowerBook G4 Not Booting Properly Unless In Safe Mode After Clean Install

Jun 29, 2009

I recently purchased a sort of beat up 1.5GHz 12" PowerBook G4, top of the line, and it arrived today. It boots up normally when the apple appears, then it shows the blue screen and then the mouse turns into a spinning wheel. Also, when I move the cursor, a second cursor from the same spot stays in the top-left corner. The PowerBook will only work normally as a headless server (powers on, lid closed), unless booted in safe mode. Another issue is the screen. The seller said there were lines going up and down the screen, but it varies depending on what is displayed on the screen. If the screen is grey or in target-disk mode, they do not appear, but on the 10.5 standard desktop pic, it changes pattern. The lines can be seen here: [URL]

MacBook Pro :: Running OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 Will Only Boot In Safe Mode

Aug 25, 2014

I have a macbook pro 15-inch, Early 2011 running osx 10.9.4. I have a SSD hard drive that i installed myself a year ago and hasn't shown any defects. Its a 120 gb OCZ-AGILITY3.

My macbook will only boot in safe mode nowadays. I have done a complete erasion of my hard drive and installed osx mavericks twice already. After the installation the computer will safely go to the desktop. But if i then do a reboot it won't get further than after the first apple logo, sometime the turning wheel will pop up, before turning off and trying again. i have tried resetting PRAM, I have tried resetting SMC, i have tried avoiding SMC (with big fan rate), but all with no success.

I have done a complete hardware test (the longer one) and it showed "no troubles found".

My guess is that the problem is with the battery. My computer won't run anymore without the adapter, when i pull the adapter out it either stays on for a while before just turning off. Without having it plugged in it won't start. Is it possible that during normal start up there is some kind of communication with the battery that can cause this?

I ran a diagnostic shown in this thread (Will only boot in safe mode) and included it in this post.

Start time: 17:07:42 08/25/14
Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,2
System Version: OS X 10.9.4 (13E28)

IMac (Intel) :: Powers Down While Starting In Safe Boot Mode Running OS X Mavericks (10.9.4)

Sep 9, 2014

My 2014 21" iMac powers itself down after about 10 seconds while trying to startup in safe boot mode. I'm not even sure why it is trying to start in safe boot mode. I shut it down after a power outage while plugged into an APS UPS. I'm guessing that since I interrupted the auto shutdown it is restarting in safe boot mode. Either way, I get a grey screen with a big apple and a progress bar. The progress bar gets to about a tenth full and the power just shuts off.

I've tried starting up while holding the alt key to select the Macintosh HD. The same thing happens.

MacBook Pro :: Stalls On Startup And Running Single User Mode Doesn't Work Anymore

Sep 8, 2014

Model Name: MacBook Pro
Model Identifier: MacBookPro8,2
Processor Name: Intel Core i7
Processor Speed: 2.2 GHz
Number Of Processors: 1
Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per core): 256 KB
L3 Cache: 6 MB
Memory: 4 GB
Boot ROM Version: MBP81.0047.B27
SMC Version (system): 1.69f4
OS X 10.6.8

So a week ago I opened Photoshop and my macbook froze and gave me this screen:

I had to force it to shut down, and when I turned it back on, I'd get the chime, I'd see the logo and the spinning cog, then it would go to a white screen and either stall or shut itself off... I tried resetting the PRAM and SMC. I went into Disk Utility and verified the disk and the permissions. I also reset Photoshop's preferences, and completely reinstalled it. Booting in safe mode worked, but of course it's a little slow and I can't use some programs. I was able to start up normally by booting in single user mode and running the /sbin/fsck -fy command a couple times.

I ended up taking it to a Genius Bar, they ran a couple diagnostic tests and confirmed it wasn't a hardware issue and it was probably the OS. They reinstalled Snow Leopard, I restored my stuff with my Time Machine backup, and everything worked fine for a couple days.

But today when I turned it on, it shut itself down again! And running single user mode doesn't work anymore. It'll say "The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK." and when I reboot, it shuts down at the white screen. Now the only way it will boot up is in safe mode, and if I close the lid to put it in sleep mode, it'll turn itself off after a few minutes.

I'm not incredibly tech savvy, but I'm wondering if it could be a third party program. I'm not sure how to find out which one is causing the issue, though... I've uninstalled SMCfanControl and StartupSound.prefpane. Those are the only two I can think of that could potentially mess with the startup...
