OS X :: Booting Up From A Computer In Target Disk Mode?

Jul 12, 2008

I'm just curious if it's possible to put my Mac Pro into TDM, connect it to my MacBook Pro, start it up holding option to choose a start-up disk, and use the Mac Pro's HD to boot up. I'd experiment myself, but the Mac Pro is packed at the moment, and I'd like to know if anyone knows for sure that it will or will not work before digging it out.

Intel Mac :: Target Display Mode Does Not Work With Mini Display-Port Cable

Mar 5, 2012

I want to buy the 27" iMac - but only if I can use it as external monitor for my Lenovo laptop when working from home. A the Apple store in London they said that this is possible with a Belkin converter from hdmi to mini display port (with a USB power caple to turn it into an active signal). The laptop also has a displayport.

OS X :: Won't Work With Kernal Panic / No Safe Mode And Target Disk Mode

Jul 6, 2010

I have a 15" mbp with 10.6 Intel core duo, 4gb ram with a boot camp and ubuntu partition through parallels. The other day I was installing xcode from apple's website, which failed 3 times after downloading saying the package couldn't be expanded. I left my computer for a while and came back where i then had to log in again. it rejected my password numerous time (i'm positive it was correct). when i restarted my computer i got a kernal panic screen when the apple logo came up. it told me to restart the computer which i did. didn't work. i restarted with the osx cd to use the disk utility. when it checked the drive it found a bunch of errors, which i then tried to correct. it went for a couple minutes then told me they couldn't be fixed and i should try to back up my data and reinstall osx. i don't know how to back up my hard drive when i can't log into my account. i've tried to boot in target disk mode and copy some files that way, but the only disk the other computer sees is my windows partition- no mac partition.

i've also tried these, none of these have worked: restarting in safe mode resetting the ram and pram booting with different sticks of ram all result in a kernal panic.

my windows partition still works fine though (as much as i hate to say it) the only things I really care about on my computer are my files from school and my itunes library. is there any way i can get these files off my computer?

IMac :: Unable To Use Target Display Mode

Dec 16, 2009

So I have a Mac mini set up with Windows 7 only and then I have that connected to a 27" iMac with the miniDP cable.

At first, during installation, I have no issues; Windows is installed and drivers are done... reboot.

I start seeing artifacts, especially in dark areas (little sparkling pixels of colors--kind of like white noise except it's not everywhere and this is in color), also every few seconds the screen would flicker, and occasionally the screen would change to where the bottom of the be on top (hard to explain, but imagine a movie where the frame isn't centered and you can see the bottom of the previous frame and the top of the current one).

I figured it was an issue with the iMac, so I switched back to the iMac and there are no issues. I switch back to the Mac mini and screen is still messed up.

OS X Mavericks :: Target Display Mode Not Working

Dec 3, 2014

I have a 21.5' iMac (Mid 2011) and a 27' iMac (late 2012) that I would love be able to use Target Display Mode. Unfortunately I have tried everything I could think of to get it to work. Here is a list of things that I have tried but have been unsuccessful at enable TDM:

1.) Completely restored Mac OS X 10.9.5 on the 21.5' iMac. Setting this machine up as new since it will be my external display.

2.) No firmware password enabled

3.) Reset PRAM on both machines

4.) Connected an Apple Keyboard w/ numeric keypad to the 21.5' iMac.

5.) Pressed CMD+F2 to enable TDM (no luck)

6.) Tried to enable 27' iMac as external display

Repeated same process with an 13in Macbook Air (Mid 2011) and got the same result. TDM will not work.

So I did some extra troubleshooting to try to target why TDM won't work.

I put my 21.5' iMac in target disk mode and connected it via thunderbolt with my 27' iMac but it doesn't see the 21.5' iMac while in target disk mode. I also tried the same process with my 13' MBA and I don't see the 21.5' iMac while in target disk mode.

IMac :: Target Display Mode Not Functioning With AV360

Oct 23, 2010

I use a Belkin AV360 so I can play my Xbox 360 on my new 27" iMac using target display mode. it has been working flawlessly since I got the AV360 until today where I haven't been able to get target display mode to work.

I've checked it is not the Xbox 360 being the problem tested it on my housemates TV. am also pretty sure it's not the Belkin AV360 itself because in system profiler under USB devices it says the "AV360 miniDP Converter" is pluged in and say same in Windows 7 bootcamp under device manager. I also tried my laptop which has a HDMI out on it.

my laptop says there is a "Belkin dongle" plugged in, I set the laptop to use the Belkin dongle at a external display and still I can't get target display mode to work.

Normally when I turn my Xbox on it automatically goes into target display mode or I can press cmd + F2 so to switch between iMac and Xbox. I have also tested my housemates Xbox in my setup and still the same problem.

IMac :: How To Use 27" Target Display Mode Connection

Dec 27, 2010

I am thinking about using my iMac as an external display for my Dell Laptop listed in my sig. Most of the time at home I can work on my iMac, but occasionally I use windows, and I have the dell for that. According to Apple:

"On the 27-inch iMac, the same port offers input, too. So you can connect any external source that has DisplayPort output including a MacBook or MacBook Pro and use your iMac as a display."

When I plug in my mini displayport cable, the iMac's screen goes black for a few seconds, then the MBP's screen flashes blue for a second or two, and then back to normal, and finally, the iMac's screen goes blue for 5 seconds or so, and then back to the desktop.

Intel Mac :: Cannot Enable Thunderbolt Target Display Mode

May 13, 2012

I have a new 3.4 GHz Thunderbolt iMac and can't get Thunderbolt Target Display Mode to work with my current-model 13" MacBook Air or the current model 15" MacBook Pro furnished to me by my employer. Cmd-F2 just creates a beeping sound. I tried three different Thunderbolt cables. (They are not Mini DisplayPort cables. I have one of those from a previous model of iMac and it both looks different from the Thunderbolt cables and System Information doesn't show any change when I try to patch the computers together using it.)

All machines are fully updated to MacOS X 10.7.4 with all firmware updates applied. System Information shows that all are equipped with Thunderbolt interfaces; the Console app shows the kernel message indicating when the Thunderbolt devices are plugged in and removed; all three machines work in Thunderbolt Target Disk mode in both directions with all three cables with both Thunderbolt interfaces on the iMac.

Is it possible to boot a macbook pro retina using an external usb3 hdd (=hdd of my previous macbook pro), and boot via target disk mode, so I can carbon copy everything to the flash memory of the new macbook ?

In principle it sounds simple, but does anyone know if it can really happen? Can it boot from usb3 in the first place? (it's faster than usb2 and fw800 so I don't see why Apple wouldn't support it).

It's important to find out before I go ahead and buy the new laptop.

MacBook :: No FireWire Cable For Target Disk Mode

Aug 31, 2014

I have an original MacBook1,1 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8. It will not start up, I have tried everything on this Apple web page , Mac OS X: Gray screen appears during startup, besides an erase and reinstall and I don't know what to do. It won't read the Snow Leopard update disk (My other two Macs do). When I restart In Verbose Mode, it always stops right after 'Airport: RSN handshake complete on en1'. When i started my other Mac in Verbose Mode, after 'Airport: RSN handshake complete on en1', it went straight to the login window. I called Apple support and they said that I need to perform an erase and reinstall but first I need to get an install disk for Mac OS X Tiger 10.4. and get some things off using Target Disk Mode. I do not have a FireWire cable and do not want to have to go and buy one. I have an Ethernet cable and a male - male USB cord. The two other Macs that I have are an iMac7,1 running Snow Leopard 10.6.8, and a MacBook6,1 running Mavericks 10.9.4.
