MacBook Pro :: New Layout Keyboard - Assigning Functions For Fn Keys?

Oct 21, 2009

My macbook pro keyboard died, the only replacement I could find was the newer keyboard layout (where the Fn keys have different functions - such as volume has been moved etc). After a bit of filing etc to get it to fit, its all back together and looking/working fine, but I need to change the keyboard layout so the pictures on the keys do what they are supposed to (hope that makes sense?) i.e. on the old one volume up was F5, but on the new one volume up is F12.

MacBook Air :: Home Row Keys Are Not Working?

Sep 6, 2010

MacBook Air Keyboard problems

Yesterday, without spilling anything on it, the left click on my trackpad (and on my wireless mouse) stopped functioning(MacBook Air/OSX 10.6.4/1.6 GhZ) After one hour it started working again. At first, I thought it must be related to settings that i had messed up in the meantime (Universal access, mouse keys etc). However it turned out not to be the case. I tried virus scan, PRAM reset, but it didn't help. Today i took it to the Apple store, they proposed to replace the keyboard. Since I am out of warranty I don't want to pay 200 euros if the problem can be solved without the replacement of the keyboard.

MacBook Pro :: Remap Home And End Keys With Fn And Arrows?

Jun 18, 2010

I'm a developer and I dual boot OSX with Ubuntu, basically for my work, although I'd like to progressively make the switch completely to OSX (mainly because of battery life).

One thing, though, that's keeping me away from making that change is the possibility to re-map "Home" and "End" keys, which I'd like to have as fn + <- and fn + ->.

Yes, I've searched and although I found a few topics about similar things, I never got to really soving my problem.

So, fellow experts, how can I accomplish this?

MacBook Pro :: How To Remap Pc Home/end Keys To Top / End Of Document

Apr 13, 2012

I run a lot of PC programs on my Macbook pro and Air using Parallels. Almost all PC software assume you have a home and end keys which you can combine with ctrl to reach the beginning and end of your document. e.g. Openoffice and MS office both, word and excel, and text editors (I program in both C and python). I have big spreadsheets that I cannot navigate to the beginning or end of sheet or even use extra functionality like arrow + shift + end to highlight a column. The lack of these combinations on the Mac make working in excel and / or OpenOffice a pain.

A read previous messages about using fn + left and fn+ right arrows, but these move me to the top of page /end of page I am currently in. Tried various combinations of cmd and alt with fn and arrows, non work.

I dowloaded keyremap4macbook, tried their various options but non work, even when running OpenOffice spreadsheet on the Mac, I cannot seem to be able to navigate straight to the upper left cell.

Previous answsers assumed the user is only using MS word and that is only an oddity of that software. I can assure you that almost all PC software has the assumption that you can go home/end and combine ctr home/ctrl end to navigate to top and end of document.

Can I change it so enter opens the file/folder, app? I can't even change the settings from system preferences? I need 3rd party programme? Also, could I make a DEL key? Can't I use cmd+X for "cut" function for files/folders?

Do I assign the Mini a number with the DHCP range or outside?  assumed if i made the DHCP range ...20 to 255 then i would give anything with static IPs a number inside the ...1 to 19 range? is that wrong? i does it still need a number inside the DHCP range?

MacBook Air :: Not Auto Assigning IP Address, Won't Join Wifi?

Nov 18, 2008

It's the strangest thing, my wife's MBA (v1) will randomly refuse to connect to our home wifi network (cast by a 500GB Time Capsule). What seems to be happening is that it will connect then disconnect at bootup, it will say no preferred networks are available (when the home network has been configured!) and refuse to assign an IP address to the MBA. If I manually select the home network from the wifi icon, it will diplay security password, and then say this is invalid (when it is perfectly valid and the one used by my own MBP and iPhone)... this seems to happen only on our home network, any other works fine...My own MBP is fine. This is driving me crazy and I haven't found anything on the web on this.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Mission Control 10.7.3 Assigning Apps To Desktops?

Apr 8, 2012

How do I get an app to stick in a desktop. I have the mission control desktop and then desktops 1 through 7. I have them all opening up various applicaitons, but even though I move the app to the desktop I want, and I shut down with the app open in that desktop, on restart it opens up in the wrong desktop...always the same one, but always the wrong one. iTunes - I put it in Desktop 7, its there when I shut down.  It always opens up in Desktop 1.  I don't have trouble with calendar, mail, addressbook. Also, sometimes 'finder' folders that I have left open in a specific window when I shut down do not open up on restart.  They do sometimes, but most of the time not.

Aperture :: Quick View Of Full Image When Assigning Faces?

Jun 26, 2014

I like to use Faces versus Names because I seem to be able to crank through it much quicker.

My flow:

1) I click a project name that has not already had faces assigned

2) I click the faces icon. Then I see the "main" part of the screen with the Faces instructions, and the section under that has the faces that need to be named.  So I start naming them.  There are 100s in this project.

3) Then I come across a face I only "kind of" recognize. I don't know if they are in the background in a crowd, of the focus of the photo. I need to understand the images composition so I can skip them or figure out their name.  I would like to quickly just get a peek at the whole photo.

4) So I switch to the Viewer and it takes me to the first photo in that project.  That's no good.

5) When I switch back to Face I also have to scroll to get back to that face.

Is there a better way to quickly see the whole photo without breaking up my workflow?

OS X :: Accessing DVD-ROM Features On DVD?

Oct 3, 2009

OK, I run a MacBook 13in, OS 10.5.8 with the superdrive that came with the machine.

Really, I'm not stupid, and I actually do successfully troubleshoot stuff usually..

However, I am baffled as to why I can not access the DVD-ROM special features on my Disney DVD movie discs. (I actually installed Interactual Player for Mac thinking maybe I needed it, but I can't say it helped.)

I can play the movie, and my son can play the games, but their are printables on the disc that when I click on them it tells me to access these features, , insert your disk into a DVD-ROM drive.... OK, As many of you already know there is is only the one disc drive on this computer... I tried searching in the "folders" of the disc for any file format I thought would open in another application ( say a txt, doc, html, xml, etc) but none of those are the printable pages supposedly on the disc. I even tried to use my husband's PC (GASP!) but got the same answer.

Applications :: Can't Enable Dev Features

Jan 30, 2010

I can't find anybody else having these issues. I installed the Chrome beta a while back, and it's been updating itself since, but I need to finally get extensions working - I need my Adblock (Digg is completely unbearable without it). I read about the method to enable it weeks ago, just install the dev version - agree to the EULA and download. I did that, and overwrote the existing copy of Chrome. I didn't remove any other files. I still can't install extensions using the bookmarklet - it enables the install button, but I receive 'Extensions are not enabled' immediately after the download tries to start. The other thing is, the dev version is supposed to include the bookmark manager. That's also nowhere to be seen. Chrome says I'm running version 4.0.249.30 and that it's up to date. Any ideas? Do I have to completely remove Chrome before installing the dev version (i.e. everything I've built up in my Chrome profile to this point in Application Support)?

MacBook Air :: Overview - Specification And New Features

Oct 21, 2010

Here's what I gathered so far on the new Airs.

Good:
More RAM - up to 4GB. At last.
Flash storage across the range - faster to resume from sleep, faster in general
11.6" also available - at least there is a choice of sizes
Beefier graphics chips - will now drive the 27" Cinema Display natively
Stereo speakers
Glass Trackpad - though you may not prefer it
Higher resolution displays
+1 USB port
Improved battery life (TBC)
Reduced thickness and weight

Not So Good:
No more backlit keyboard
No more bundled USB>Ethernet adapter
Still got display port/audio out/magsafe on different sides of the chassis

Unknown:
Have they fixed the hinge problem?
Have they improved the cooling design?
Are the edges still quite sharp on your wrists?
Is the display fully glossy or like the old ones?

The only compelling feature for me over my revC is the 4Gb RAM. Not worth the cost of upgrading.
