OS X Mavericks :: Assigning Mac Mini A Static IP
Jun 27, 2014
I want to assign my wired Mini a Static IP. I know how to do this but my question is to do with theRouter and DHCP addresses it hands out. Do I assign the Mini a number with the DHCP range or outside? assumed if i made the DHCP range ...20 to 255 then i would give anything with static IPs a number inside the ...1 to 19 range? is that wrong? i does it still need a number inside the DHCP range?

I have a new Mac Mini and occasionally (once every couple of hours) a static pop comes through the speakers. These are Logitech Z-2300s that worked fine without this issue on a Windows PC a couple days prior.

Wifi does not work with a static IP address.
My wifi access point does not have DHCP enabled, and there is no DHCP server on my network. The internet connection is NOT coming my wifi router.
Every machine on the network has a static ip address and manually configured DNS and GATEWAY to my correct gateway IP. This currently is working on this machine (windows 7), my ipad 2, my xperia phone, my windows xp box, my vista box, and even a virtual pc running windows server which is on my mac.
But the mac won't connect to the internet, or ping anything including the gateway ip address or any other machine on the ip address. How can I get this mac to have a static ip address without having dhcp ...

Recently switched to Mac (Macbook Pro). When I highlight something and hit enter, I'd like it to, you know, open the file. But it doesn't, it allows me to rename the file. Can I change it so enter opens the file/folder, app? I can't even change the settings from system preferences? I need 3rd party programme? Also, could I make a DEL key? Can't I use cmd+X for "cut" function for files/folders?

I was wondering if anyone knew how to assign actions to mighty mouse buttons other than the default ones listed in system preferences.
In other words, I want my web browser to go 'back' when I squeeze the side buttons of my mighty mouse.

It's the strangest thing, my wife's MBA (v1) will randomly refuse to connect to our home wifi network (cast by a 500GB Time Capsule). What seems to be happening is that it will connect then disconnect at bootup, it will say no preferred networks are available (when the home network has been configured!) and refuse to assign an IP address to the MBA. If I manually select the home network from the wifi icon, it will diplay security password, and then say this is invalid (when it is perfectly valid and the one used by my own MBP and iPhone)... this seems to happen only on our home network, any other works fine...My own MBP is fine. This is driving me crazy and I haven't found anything on the web on this.

My macbook pro keyboard died, the only replacement I could find was the newer keyboard layout (where the Fn keys have different functions - such as volume has been moved etc). After a bit of filing etc to get it to fit, its all back together and looking/working fine, but I need to change the keyboard layout so the pictures on the keys do what they are supposed to (hope that makes sense?) i.e. on the old one volume up was F5, but on the new one volume up is F12.

When I create a new file, for example a text file that contains several commands, the new file is automatically only given read and write permissions. I would like the execute permission to also be automatically assigned. How I can change this.

How do I get an app to stick in a desktop. I have the mission control desktop and then desktops 1 through 7. I have them all opening up various applicaitons, but even though I move the app to the desktop I want, and I shut down with the app open in that desktop, on restart it opens up in the wrong desktop...always the same one, but always the wrong one. iTunes - I put it in Desktop 7, its there when I shut down. It always opens up in Desktop 1. I don't have trouble with calendar, mail, addressbook. Also, sometimes 'finder' folders that I have left open in a specific window when I shut down do not open up on restart. They do sometimes, but most of the time not.

I like to use Faces versus Names because I seem to be able to crank through it much quicker.
My flow:
1) I click a project name that has not already had faces assigned
2) I click the faces icon. Then I see the "main" part of the screen with the Faces instructions, and the section under that has the faces that need to be named. So I start naming them. There are 100s in this project.
3) Then I come across a face I only "kind of" recognize. I don't know if they are in the background in a crowd, of the focus of the photo. I need to understand the images composition so I can skip them or figure out their name. I would like to quickly just get a peek at the whole photo.
4) So I switch to the Viewer and it takes me to the first photo in that project. That's no good.
5) When I switch back to Face I also have to scroll to get back to that face.
Is there a better way to quickly see the whole photo without breaking up my workflow?

Gmail is my default email client. I'm trying to send an email blast to my groups in address book. When I right click on a group, and click "send to...", none of the email address show up in the TO field, only the name of the Group appears.Previously, I used mac mail and clicking "send to" group would result in all email addresses going right where they're supposed to go.I don't know how I changed the client to Gmail, but if I can't get it to work, I'd like to switch it back.

When I go into Mail I can do everything I want but alas! It does not open the menu bits at the top. Thus I cannot do anything except what is available on the inbox screen... I have tried opening and closing and turning off etc. I would tell you what version I am in but that is in the menu and I can't open. I have updated to maverick.

I scroll through my incoming mail and find a message I want to reply to or forward. I move my cursor to the body of the message and swipe up and down to try to make the mini tool bar (trash reply reply all forward) appear within the message.Sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't. I've tried clicking on the message and it doesn't seem to make a difference.

re-setup my dad's old (2006) D-Link Wireless Range Extender (was working fine with a Netgear Wireless G router; replaced that router with the same model, only newer). I think I've figured out how to log into it now (step one, right?), but I have to "manually configure my computer's IP address to a static address within the range of the extender" (like 192.168.0.XX) and then enter 192.168.0.30 into my browser. My question: how do I "manually configure my computer's IP address to a static address within the range of the extender"? I imagine that's in the Network settings pane.

I recently purchased the latest iteration of the MBP 2.2 ghz. When plugged into a wall socket (220v here in HK), if I touch the lid I can feel a light electrical current in my hand - similar to the feeling of electric massagers, a light vibrating feeling. I didn't notice this while plugged in in the States (though I bought the comp here in HK). It doesn't hurt, but is this normal, or something I should be concerned about?

This has been driving me nuts for a few months now. My macbook keeps emitting a sound very much like static. Only today, I realized that this sound goes away when the processor is working. So if I scroll down in Safari, open a New Folder, etc, the sound briefly pauses before resuming again. Almost sounds like a refrigerator. It bugs me a lot lot. Anybody else having this issue? Or has Apple been able to fix this for anyone?

I connected my MacBook Pro to my TV (non-HD) using a 3.5 to L/R composite for audio (from headset hole) and an Apple DVI to S-Video/composite for video. I'm using the S-video part of the adapter. I get good sound out of both channels, but when I connect the S-video cable, I immediately get static feedback from the stereo speakers (the L/R composites are connected directly into my stereo receiver and the S-video goes into my TV).
The video quality is fine when it's connected...

I'm trying to connect my Macbook to my work internet via an ethernet connection- I do not have access to the main router, just a ethernet jack. Currently, I have a desktop PC at work that works fine and when I plug in my Macbook, the machine does not recognize the internet. I spoke with my IT department who said that I need a static IP address but they do not support Apple so I'm on my own. I tried typing ipconfig in the command window and got 3 numbers : IP address, subnet mask and gatewy address. In the system prefs I typed in the IP number, subnet mask but am not sure where to put the gateway address - Still can't connect to internet -

I just walked in the door and shook my mouse to wake up the screen. My Macbook Pro's display came up instantly (and normally) but the second monitor... a SyncMaster 220WM hooked up via mini displayport to DVI, showed nothing but snow... like exactly what you'd see if a TV station wasn't getting reception.
I'm running on the 9600m GT at the moment. 2.66Ghz C2D mid-2009 MBP unibody.
I waited about two minutes... and the image of my second desktop came back to normal in an instant. No excessive fan or heat... no need to restart, no kernel panic... nothing of that sort. And the kind of static that showed up again reminded me of either a TV channel with no reception... or the static you see when you boot into a PS3 game via HDMI... you get a momentary bit of static when it negotiates the HDCP signal.
I never encountered this issue using the same cable connected to my SR MBP with DVI.
Is this a graphics card issue? or an issue with the mini-displayport DVI adapter? Was it having a hard time negotiating HDCP?
