MacBook Pro :: It Won't Recognize New HDD
May 25, 2012
I'm having a problem with my MBP and am stumped; I hope someone has a solution. Here's the backstory (please bear with me; this may be a bit long in order to give you all the details). My keyboard croaked, and the 160gb hard drive was filling up, so I thought I would replace both and add more RAM while I had the beast opened up. So I did all that, successfully (I think). Prior to taking out the HD, I backed it up using Time Machine. The MBP was running Leopard. I have the original 10.4.8 disc, after which I updated to 10.5.8.
After swapping out the keyboard, drive and adding RAM, I fired the system up and it worked! So I inserted the Install disc, went to Disc Utilities and formatted and partitioned the 750gb new drive. When I asked the system to install the OS, it chuckled at me and did nothing. The new partitions are on the desktop, but the Install disc doesn't recognize them. I plugged my external drive in (the one that has the Time Machine backup...), restarted the MBP, and it booted from the Western Digital external drive. how can I get the system to recognize the new drive and install the OS on it?

My MacBook simply does not get along with one specific DVD, and I can't figure out why. It's the third disc in a set of four (First 13 episodes of Glee on DVD -- don't judge), and the others play perfectly. The disc is flawless, as far as I can tell, but for some reason, my MacBook won't recognize it. When I put it in, it sounds like the disc is trying to spin but can't. It does this for about ten seconds and then it gets spit back out.
The DVD will play anywhere else but the MacBook and the MacBook will play anything else except that DVD. I would just accept that this DVD and my Mac will never be friends IF it was just a stand alone DVD, but like I said, it's from a set of four. They should all be in the same format/region/what have you, right?

I have viewed a number of topics on external HD's that can't be recognized, but can't seem to find an answer to my problem. I own a WD 500GIG External passport drive, that has worked with my MAC since I purchased it. All of a sudden yesterday when I plugged it into my macbook (in the same slot I always plug it in) I got the USB port is drawing too much power. I immediately checked forums around the net and people were saying the mother board needs replaced. Well I have a mac mini at work an a second macbook pro at home. I plugged the same HD into all three computers and got the drawing too much power.
One of my macbook pro's has firewire 800 so I tried to connect the drive using that, but now it just doesn't recognize. The lights flash on the drive as if it's mounted properly, but I can't get my computer to recognize the drive. I've been through disk utility and the drive does not show up there. I have ordered a firewire 800 to 6pin cable to attempt to connect it that way, but other than that I'm out of luck I think. I can't even get a computer to recognize the drive in order to reformat it. Has anyone ever had this problem before? If so what steps did you use to resolve it, that is if you were able to.

Recently, I plugged my WD Passport external hard drive into my Macbook's USB port. Suddenly, after over a year of working fine, the Macbook wouldn't recognize the WD Passport. The drive's blue light came on and it was whirring, but I couldn't get an icon to appear in Finder or on the desktop. I assumed the problem was with the Passport, declared it broken and got over the loss of my files. But tonight, I plugged in my boyfriend's WD Passport and encountered the same problem. It refused to recognize it, then when I unplugged it and my boyfriend plugged it back into his Macbook...nothing. His computer would no longer recognize it, even though it had worked fine not 10 minutes prior. Does that mean the problem is my Macbook?

2012 MBP, with Lion, and SSD.Connect external HDD and it does not show up anywhere.Reset PRAM, SMC, etc, new firmware upgrade, nothing. But then the other day, suddenly the external drive was recognized.I thought it had to do with the firmware upgrade, but the next day: Unrecognizable again. The issue was a 2008 Apple TV that was switched on/stand-by.Unplugging Apple TV, and the drive gets recognized.

When I insert a blank cd or dvd I do not get a disc image on the desktop. When I open disc utility I can see the disc in superdrive but I cannot eject it. If I insert any disc that has any kind of info on it then I have no problem.

When I plug my iphone into my Macbook pro I get the chirp so I know it is charging but I don't get any icons showing the phone is connected nor do I see it on Finder. I also have an Air and my iPhone works great for that. I can't seem to find the setting difference that allows my Air to see the iPhone but it doesn't allow my Macbook Pro to see the iPhone.

My macbook pro is 14 months old, and its an early 2011 model. My question is: Does anyone experience with a x-icon battery? I tried to do the SMC reset, however nothing is fixed. It look like the battery does not commynicate with my Mac. Is my battery dead?

New macbook pro. 10.5.8.
WD external drive. Working fine yesterday. Took the Mac on the road. Unplugged everything. Did eject the WD drive before unplugging.
Set it back up and now the WD external is not recognized. Checked all the usb ports. All working with other peripherals. Checked the drive with another computer. Its fine.
Restarts, plugging and unplugging. Turning drive off and on...
Nothing seems to work.

I'm thinking of upgrading to 8gb ram for my Mid 2009 Macbook Pro 15" since I run a few virtual machines for work but was wondering if I can keep running at the 32 bit level or if I need to run Snow Leopard in 64 bit mode?

I'm using a Corsair 120 GB Force SSD, a MCE OptiBay Kit, and a Hitachi 500 GB 7200 rpm drive. Everything works great when the SSD is in the hard drive bay, and the Hitachi is in the OptiBay. I'd prefer to swap the arrangement so the Hitachi can be protected by the sudden motion sensor, but when the SSD is in the OptiBay OS X won't recognize it. I've tried booting from the install disc to use Disk Utility, but it only shows the Hitachi drive as if the SSD isn't in the machine. I've throughly checked the installation; it appears correct, and as I said everything works fine with the drives swapped. I've also tried resetting the PRAM and the SMC, per the instructions in Apple's KB.

I just recently bought a Macbook Pro about 2 weeks ago. Everything's been working great up until today. First I noticed that my MBP wouldn't recognize my phone when I plugged it into the USB. (Its an Android phone - don't bash me for it) I just thought it was my phone at first. A couple hours later I tried transferring some files to my external hard drive (1TB iomega) and my MBP wouldn't recognize it. I plugged in another one of my external HD (320 GB Maxtor), same problem. I then tried my other external HD (500 GB Western Digital), same problem. I tried a different USB port, different cord, rebooting the mac, nothing seems to be working. It will recognize my ipod touch tho. Being that its happening on 4 different devices, I doubt its the devices themselves. Its not the cord because I tried 2 different ones, 3 if you count the one for my phone which uses micro USB.
I am very new to the mac world so other than the things I have tried already, I don't have a clue what to try next. Oh yea, one more thing, all my hard drives are formatted for pc being that I just recently bought my MBP, I had all these hard drives before my mac. And they have all connected fine to my MBP in the past week or so.

I want to hand over an old iBook G3 900MHz running MAC OSX 10.2.8 to my brother. I have a Powerbook G4, which I love. I've installed an Airport card as he was hoping to use it wirelessly however, it will not accept my routers password although I know it's right. Its a Netgear provided through SKY. Does the operating system need updating?

Here's my puzzler of the moment: I have a Creative USB headset (the Fatal1ty gaming headset for Mac, which I bought at an Apple store). It's been working fine via USB (with the notable exception that it stops working easily if even slightly jostled).
In the last few days, however, it stopped working when plugged directly into the Mac. The audio out still works, and it shows up as an audio input device, but when selected it does not detect any incoming audio.
I assumed it was a headset problem until I tested it plugged into a USB hub - plugged into the hub, it works fine.

I have a new Toshiba TV (40L5200U) that will recognize HDMI input from an IPad, but not from a MacBook Pro (running 10.6.8). I'm connecting through a Rocketfish Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (RF-AP305), but the TV says "no video signal." Display Preferences shows 1024x768, which the TV user guide lists as an acceptable input (XGA), but when I detect displays the computer doesn't recognize the TV. I can't see an Arrangements tab. The computer does give output through this port to a VGA adapter for a projector.

my GF and a glass of Wine. Cat hits wine and wine hits MBP. The Mac shut off instantly, we acted pretty quick and mopped up and turned upside down. I then took back off and over the course of the next 5 days I have stripped it down completely including the Key board and cleaned as best as I could. I've put it all back together and it starts up, a reassuring tone rings out, then apple sign appears with a loading bar beneath, this takes a while then it reaches the Lion log in page.It still recognizes me, or rather my name as the user but refuses my password which I know is correct. The keyboard isn't backlit but keys are typing something (can't see characters, just dots). Screen brightness works. No back light on keys although this may be normal at this point, not sure.

I'm now running 10.6.8 on a MacBook Pro and last night when I plugged in my external hard drive or a dongle, it didn't come up on the desktop. I tried both USB ports and different dongles - nothing. Yet every time I unplugged I got the warning message that unplugging a disc without ejecting via the Finder could lose files on the disc. The Disc Utility can see the USBs and I've tried repairing and verifying the disc it sees - nothing. I've restarted and shut down on separate occasions and on another re-set SMC by removing the battery - nothing. So basically, it's 'seeing' the USB but not putting it on the desktop graphically so I can't see any files on the USB or save anything to it.
I only updated to 10.6.8 a couple of weeks ago and though I haven't had any issue like this till last night, I can't think of anything else that has changed with my set-up.

I have a DVD -R with .jpg and .mp4 files. These files are recognized on my PC, but my MacBook Pro (OS X 10.7) does not recognize the files. Although the DVD loads onto the Mac, the folder and files are not visible.
I am going to try a work around and burn the files to a different DVD using the PC
