MacBook Pro :: Networking To AppleTV Won't Recognize

Jan 2, 2011

I have a MacBook Pro 15 and I have just received AppleTV for Christmas. I can make it all work via my home WiFi, however I want to know how I can get it to work when I go away for work without my home WiFi. I have tried to make a network from my MacBook, however the Apple TV won't recognise it.

Applications :: Using AppleTv With A NAS Running ITunes Server?

Mar 13, 2008

I'm currently trying to decide if I'd like to buy a AppleTv as it seems to fit what I would like it to do, but here's my question(s):

Say I have a NAS running iTunes server, for purposes of this question this is the exact one I was looking at (NAS) and I'd like to use this as my main server for all my computers, as in put my library on the NAS so it can stream to any computer / appletv in the house, now will the iTunes server only allow music to be streamed or will it also work with videos etc.

And if this does work, will I have to add the movies / music in iTunes running on a Mac / PC and then sync it to the NAS or exactly how does that work so that it's added to that library?

it might sound kind of messed up after I typed it out, but I'm trying to be clear with what I would like it to do.

Applications :: HD Rental Without AppleTV - ITunes Crack/hack?

Aug 1, 2008

I own a MacBook Pro 17" with the Hi-Res screen (True HD 1900x1200). I would really, really like to rent HD movies from the iTunes store instead of the normal resolution versions (although they are probably not true HD...) - but, as we all know, this unfortunately only works with AppleTV. (Stupid!) Do you think it is possible that somebody could write an iTunes crack, hack or whatever it is called to simulate that the rental is made with an AppleTV although I'm on a computer? If yes, this would be a kick-ass program.

ITunes :: Keeping Mac Mini From Sleeping While Playing On AppleTV

Mar 25, 2012

Ever since I reformatted my Mac a few weeks ago, I've had some interesting new problems. I've been told for some of them that it is because before my reformat, my Mac was updated from Snow Leopard, and carried over some stuff into Lion.

This problem involves iTunes 10.6 and streaming to a second-generation Apple TV. (The 720p version, but running iOS 5 that came out with the new 1080p Apple TV) The problem involves my Mac going to sleep. I can fix the problem, but it works differently than it used to: Before, my Mac went to sleep after three hours of inactivity; if my iTunes library was being accessed by my AppleTV, iPhone, or iPad using Home Sharing, it would never sleep as long as it was being accessed remotely. Now, however, it will still sleep if it is being accessed, which causes problems since my Mac is on the other end of the house from the Apple TV, and I often run it for more than three hours when listening to music as ambiance or watching a television/movie marathon from my iTunes Library.

I can set my Mac to never sleep, but I would prefer it would still sleep after the three hours -- assuming it wouldn't sleep while accessing it from Home Sharing.

OS X V10.7 Lion :: ITunes Not Showing Content That AppleTV Shows?

Mar 28, 2012

I have a very large iTunes library, with content spread over multiple volumes.  Recently, I would add, say, a movie to the iTunes library.  I don't have iTunes set to copy content into the library, so it stays where it is. Now, the item looks like it got added.  If, within iTunes, I'm in the "Movies" library, and I search for the movie I just added, it isn't there.  I do a search for it, and it isn't there.  However, all the AppleTVs connected to the library show that it is there, and I can play it.

So, clearly the item has made it into the library, otherwise it wouldn't be streamed to the connected AppleTVs, (and iPhones, and iPads).  But, it still will not show up in the iTunes library list.  No matter what I do.  I can quit and relaunch iTunes, I can quit iTunes and open it back up with the "option" key to that I can specifcally choose that library, etc.  But, it never shows up in the list. I just upgraded to iTunes 10.6.1, and still, no dice.  It will not show up in the iTunes list, but I can still play it from shared iPhones, iPads, and AppleTVs.

OS X :: Won't Stop Apple Remote Controlling Both AppleTV And IMac At Same Time

Feb 3, 2010

I have this annoying problem with my iMac in the same room as my Apple TV and whenever I use my Apple TV Remote, it also turns on a movie on my iMac and that bugs me. Sure I could turn down the sound so I don't hear it but that does not solve the problem.

Is there a way to pair these remotes, I have one for my iMac and 1 for my ATV, and whenever I play something on my ATV it also starts a movie on my apple, usually a different movie. Can they be paired separately somehow so they are controlling only the unit they are suppose to be with?

MacBook Air :: Networking With Airport Extreme?

Mar 23, 2008

I've currently got a Macbook and a Macbook Air connecting to an Airport Extreme Basestation with the new firmware. Both the Macbooks have 802.11n and the new Airport Utility installed. My Macbook is functioning perfectly, however, my Macbook Air has the following problems:

1) It won't connect to the AE when it is set in the 802.11n only mode at 5 GHz. It will scan for the network but not find it. It will connect in the 802.11 only mode at 2.4 GHz.

2) It prints very slowly to my HP printer connect to the AE via the USB port. It will spool the page being printed and will take about 1-2 minutes before the printer finally print it. My Macbook doesn't have any problems printing. When connected directly to the printer, the Macbook Air prints fine making me think that this is a networking issue.

I believe the printing problems started after the upgrade, but since I use my Macbook more than my Macbook Air, I could be wrong about this.

MacBook :: 10.5.8 Settings For Networking With Win XP / Vista And 7 Computers

I currently am running OS X 10.5.8. I am trying to set up my MB (and my sister's iMac) so that it can File/Print Share with the Windows workgroup that I have set up on my home wireless network. I have tried a few walk thoughts out there on the interwebz. So far the Windows machines see the Mac's and their respective public folders. However, the Mac's don't. However say if I am downloading something and I am choosing where to save it, the windows machines are shown. But they aren't shown under the shared menu when I open up finder from the dock. How do I set up the Mac(s) so that they will recognize the windows shared drives/folders? Currently the only windows machines on the workgroup is one running XP Pro SP3, and Win 7. All machines (including mac) are up to date.

OS X :: Networking - Can't See PC's But PC's Can See Mac?

Mar 10, 2009

Well after an hour and 20 minutes with Apple Tech Support I've run into a bump on the road with my beloved MacBook Air On the network I have an HP Desktop, an LG P300 and a Lenovo T500, and now my MacBook Air. All the PC's can see each other including the MacBook but the MacBook can't see them. After a grueling conversation first with a tech support newbie I had no luck, finally I was put through to an expert and I figured 'great, now I'll get the problem solved' ... not so, after doing all kinds of trial and error he thought maybe I should reinstall the OS, hell this is a new computer I'm not interested in hours on the phone and installing the OS ... I've done that enough with Windows ...

So I politely told him we were getting nowhere with his advice and if it's this much trouble just to see PC's on my network maybe I better re-think this whole 'buy mac' idea, return the MBA before the return period is up and go PC shopping ...And that's where I'm at now, time to walk away from the mac for an hour, if anyone can give me some idea's that might help please do, I love this MBA the Support didn't go well at all ...

OS X :: Networking On Windows Workgroup

I've read is related to 10.4 or before and it appears there's some differences in menu options so I'm not putting two-and-two together. Just bought myself a new unibody macbook for x-mas. So the deal is I'm having trouble getting it to see and recognize my windows workgroup home network. I see tips on enabling windows networking or smb or other stuff but i can't seem to find those options in 10.5.5 (now updated to 10.5.6). If there's a manual or reference document specific to 10.5.5/.6 that's available.

Hardware :: Networking For Dummies?

Dec 18, 2009

I'm very new to all of this so please forgive my ignorance. I'm almost positive that this question has been asked and answered before but I've been searching and I don't know enough about this topic to even begin to comprehend half of the answers that people have gotten.

I just want a very simple yes/no answer. And if no, suggestions on the cheapest way to accomplish this.

I have a MBP hooked up to a 1TB Seagate drive. I want to make the files on that drive accessible wirelessly. I know I can use the Airport Extreme to do this.

Now, my question is, what if I'm not using the Airport Extreme as a wireless router. My computer is nowhere near my current wireless router and I cannot move my drive.

In other words, is there a way to get an Airport Extreme connected to an existing wireless network?

OS X :: How To Setup Home Networking

Jan 10, 2010

I have an Intel iMac and Macbook connecting just fine to my netgear router. Airport signals are great throughout the house. A friend dropped off an old PowerMac G4 (Quicksilver) which I placed down the hall in my daughter's room.

It didn't have an airport card, so I installed an aftermarket one. The airport setup utility continually kicks out my login password to my home network saying it's incorrect (am sure it's right) and there is no signal indication in the finder.

iMac is running Leopard 10.5.x
Macbook is 10.4.x
G4 is 10.2

Software :: Windows And Mac OS Networking?

Jan 3, 2006

I would like to send my iTunes music directory to my windowsXP box but when I log in to windows from the Mac and try to transfer these files, I get a message on the Mac saying "The operation cannot be completed because you do not have sufficient priviledges". I'm running MacOS 10.4.3.

To do this I usually select 'go' on the finder pull down menu and select 'connect to server'. The mac will find the windows box ok and connect to it (i've got a folder in the windows root directory set for sharing). I just cant send anything to it!!! :-(

I am logged into the mac as an administrator and I have given all directories, subdirectories and files that I want to transfer adminstrator read and write priviledges.... it's still saying I don't have the rights to move them though.

OS X :: Which Format For External HDD And Usb Pen Drives & Networking

Feb 23, 2009

I have purchased a MBA (love it!), and I am about to sell my Windows desktop. I will be duel-booting OS X and Win 7 on my MBA, and I might add a Mac mini or a self-built Windows box to my network down the road (mostly to serve video and other files). I am getting an Airport Extreme to add to my current wireless G router/DSL modem. The AE will serve as my wireless N access point (N for the MBA, G from the other wifi router for my iPhone), and I will use it to connect my printer and an external 1TB drive. I can't decide whether to built a cheap Windows box to be my file server (and to perform random tasks when the MBA is with me) or to buy some NAS system to serve my files.

My other question is what format do I use for my external drive and a couple of pen drives I use as backup for my documents and pictures. They are currently formatted NTFS, and I realize I cannot modify them from OS X. But Mac formatting isn't visible in Windows without an added program, right? I often have files above the size limit for Fat32. So which format do I chose? One of the pen drives is used for school where I transfer Visual Studio programming files; another is a photo/document backup that I keep in a fireproof safe. Will I just need to keep one pen drive only for my programming classes formatted to NTFS? What do other people do?
