OS X Mavericks :: MDS-Stores 99.9% CPU Causing Freeze On Log In

Jun 22, 2014

My macbook running mavericks froze earlier today with everything but the mouse becoming unresponsive, since then I have tried rebooting in safe mode (which has been fine) and then normally a number of times, but everytime I do I always end up with the same problem i started with. I managed to get activity monitor open before it froze the last time and found that mds_stores is running at 99.9% CPU.

I understand that it is in relation to spotlight but have spotlight set to look at nothing in system prefs.

is there any way I can start up without the system remembering to start the process that is causing mds_stores to run as I feel this is the problem. I have tried quitting the process in activity monitor to no avail.

OS X Mavericks :: 10.9.4 Causing Computer To Lock Up?

Jul 1, 2014

I just updated the OS to 10.9.4, and in the ~6 hours since doing so, my computer has locked up twice.  Right in the middle of doing a task, all response ceases except for mouse movement.  Three-finger salute is ineffective, and the only solution is the power button.

Is it possible to roll back to 10.9.3?

I have a 2.3 Ghz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB of RAM

OS X Mavericks :: Selective Routing Causing (out Of Memory)

Jun 30, 2014

I've got two interfaces, in this order:

1. Wi-Fi connection to Apple time capsule that links to the internet - 10.0.1.9

2. LAN connection to ISP that links to the internet -  10.0.2.250

This works perfectly well, however, I would like to rout traffic through the second link, not just have it as a fail-over.

So, I use the route command, like this: route -n add -host 197.242.144.171 10.0.2.250route -n add -host 197.242.144.175 10.0.2.250route -n add -host 173.194.41.182 10.0.2.250

This doesn't give any errors and a netstat -nr shows

197.242.144.171    10.0.2.250         UGHS            0        1     en0197.242.144.175    10.0.2.250         UGHS            0        0     en0173.194.41.182     10.0.2.250         UGHS            0       12     en0

If, though, I try trace route, this is what I get: traceroute 197.242.144.175traceroute to 197.242.144.175 (197.242.144.175), 64 hops max, 52 byte packetstraceroute: sendto: Cannot allocate memory1 traceroute: wrote 197.242.144.175 52 chars, ret=-1

It looks as if, somehow, the route command is corrupting the normal routin

OS X Mavericks :: Safari Causing Heat And Excessive Fan Use - Had To Switch To Chrome

MacBook Pro :: OS X Mavericks (10.9.4) USB Port Working Only Intermittently

Sep 1, 2014

I have an older macbook 3,1 running Mavericks OS and recently one of my left USB ports has not been:

1) able to eject external hard drives plugged into it (I have to force eject)-instead it gives me a message that one or more programs may be using it (even though I don't have any programs using it).  The hard drive is being powered by USB has a 3.0 connection although this wasn't a problem in the past... I tried the other USB port and it can eject just fine from that port.

2)Intermittent communication with mouse. Not sure if this is a hardware issue but when I try to run diagnostics on this laptop by holding down the "D" key at startup it doesn't take me to diagnostics. I no longer have the discs for this laptop (containing said hardware test) so I can't boot the diagnostics from that discs.

In lieu of a hardware test I opened CONSOLE and did a search for USB and there were a couple of these messages:

8/29/14 12:13:43.000 AM kernel[0]: **** [IOBluetoothHostControllerUSBTransport][SuspendDevice] -- Suspend -- suspendDeviceCallResult = 0x0000 (kIOReturnSuccess) -- 0xdc00 ****

Is this a logic board issue? Would rolling my OS back to pre-Mavericks work? The problem didn't emerge right when I updated to Mavericks however I have had luck changing OS stuff (updating or rolling back) with faulty USBs...

Here are other troubleshooting methods I have attempted with no success: -Disk Utlity (repair disk and permissions)

-RESET PRAM NVRAM
-Remove battery
-RESET SMC
-Shut Down
-Run Disk Utility @ startup

I'd like to get access to a Hardware Test compatible with my macbook. The links I have found online are to incomplete files.

OS X Mavericks :: MacBook Pro Headphone Port Refuses To Recognize Headphones

Sep 12, 2014

Since doing a clean install of Mavericks (which solved a ReportCrash loop problem), everything has been fine except..for some reason the 3.5mm headphone port refuses to acknowledge the existence of headphones when plugged in. The internal speakers do not cut out. No sound comes through the headphones. If I go into Systems Preferences/Sound/Output there is no option for headphones sound, just internal speakers.

I have tried everything (deleting .plist files and rebooting, booting in safe mode, PRAM resets etc etc). I have also tried various sets of headphones (mono, stereo and three ring headphone plugs). They all don't work on my MacBook Pro, they all do work (and make the internal speakers cut out) on my MacBook Air. It's not the headphones.

The port will happily recognize, charge and download my iPod nano. I am convinced this is an OS problem, as the port has not suffered any shocks, and it happened directly after a clean Mavericks install. It was working fine on Mavericks before the clean install.

OS X Mavericks :: Setup Assistant Stuck Frozen Cancels Shut Down

The computer is completely unresponsive and won't shut down or turn off. It is stuck in Set Up Assistant after trying to sign in to AppleID. Attempting to shut down or restart produces the following dialogue: "The application Set Up Assistant has cancelled shut down. To try shutting down again, quit Setup Assistant and click Try Again."

HOWEVER it is impossible to quick Set Up Assistant— the icon is completely unresponsive even to force quit, right click or anything.I've managed to get into being able to see Dashboard and at the top Desktop and the dock below. But I can't click on anything from there. So it seems it is not the whole computer.

OS X Mavericks :: SSH Port Forwarding Stopped Working

Sep 2, 2014

I have used ssh port forwarding in the past,I have recently upgraded to Mavericks, but it does appear that my ssh port forwarding stopped some time before this. The last time I know it worked was 5/14/14, and feel it has worked more recently as well.

from my Mac I ssh to my work jump server (port 22, let's say its IP is 11.22.33.44), and my jump server has access to work PC (lets say IP of 10.1.2.3). My work PC has RDP running on it on the common port 3389. I have verified that I can set up a working RDP session at work from another box. Also, I know that my jump server can get to my PC at work as I can ping my work IP if I just ssh straight to my jump server. And I know that there is no firewall stopping me from the jump server as I can also open a telnet session to my work PC on port 3389, without errors.

how I have done it in the past and it has worked, but now recently stopped working in Terminal app:

ssh  -f  me@11.22.33.44  -L  3388:10.1.2.3:3389  -Nnv

The verbose logging shows that it sets up connectivity. If I then look to see if my local port is listening I can type:

netstat  -an  |  grep  127.0

I will note that port 3387 is in fact LISTENing and waiting for connection

I then start my RDP client app, and start a session to "localhost:3387" (I could also use "127.0.0.1:3387", and have, but it does not work either). My RDP client eventually times out. I have turned my firewall off and on, neither way works.

The verbose log shows the following is setup appropriately (with noted modifications to server names and actual IPs): debug1: Authentication succeeded (keyboard-interactive).Authenticated to somewhere.net ([11.22.33.44]:22).debug1: Local connections to localhost:3387 forwarded to remote address 10.1.2.3:3389debug1: Local forwarding listening on 127.0.0.1 port 3387.

OS X Mavericks :: USB Port Digital Sound Control

Jun 29, 2014

Having just migrated from 10.6.8 where this problem didn't exist, I don't know where or what might be causing this in 10.9.3.

I run the JRivers music program Media Center and the normal player feeds the digital stream out the usb port to my DAC.  It has 2 modes, starting up with exclusive access and not starting with exclusive access.  I have tried it both ways with identical results.

If I run music thru the JRivers app and out the usb and then stop the player to have a browser (safari or firefox) play a video, the audio portion of the browser audio is sent to the front panel speaker and not to the usb port.

This wasn't the case with 10.6.8 where I would switch back and forth frequently.  Now I have to restart the mac in order to 'release' the usb port back to the browser.

That is until I run the Media Center over usb.

I have run Audio Midi Setup, to see if I can 'release' the usb port, to no avail.

OS X Mavericks :: Epson 4800 Don't Print Through USB Port On Time Capsule

Epson 4800 print perfectly on direct USB connection to MacBook Pro with the 9.17 Epson driver, but when connected to USB port on the Time Capsule, there is red sign and notice that the printer is unconnected. Time Capsule is correctly recognised on the local WiFi and set with correct password. USB port is working for other printers correctly. Just the 4800 is not recognised. I tried everything (deleting the printer and reseting all printers too)...

MacBook Pro :: Bug Causing CPU To Max Out When Emptying Trash

Mar 2, 2012

Twice recently, when I empty the Trash on my mid-2010 MacBook Pro with OS X Lion (current update), the Trash empties but the CPU goes to 100% utilization, the fans come on high, the CPU temperature as measured by an app exceeds 200 degrees Fahrenheit, and of course any commands produce a long beachball. The computer will only shut down by force via the power button.

Is it harmful for the CPU to max-out like this? The power-on self-test on startup reported "passed" so there doesn't appear to be any damage but I am not sure how much these tests really test. The Apple Hardware Test will not run in Lion. I ran one with my old Snow Leopard startup disk and it reported pass but recorded the test date as in the year 4012.

MacBook Pro :: Sata Causing Freezing Beachballing?

Sep 5, 2009

To cut a long story short, I'n on my 4th June '09 MBP. Those darn SATA issues have caused freezing and beachballing on each of the MBPs.

I'm taking it back to Apple today for a full refund. I'm convinced this generation of MPS are all affected and I'm staying well clear.

I've been looking on the Refrub Store and this seems to fit my needs but will it also have the SATA issues?

Also, is there anything about this notebook/generation that I should be aware of? I want this to be the last MBP! (well, at least for a couple of years).

MacBook Pro :: Dragon Age Causing Heat Concerns?

Dec 2, 2009

I recently purchased a 17 inch MBP with 3.06ghz processor and 7200rpm 500gb HD ticked and fancied playing Dragon Age as i'm giving my old desktop computer away.I installed windows 7 Ultimate (lost my XP CD), cranked the settings on Dragon Age to max, turned x4 AA on and set about from where I left off. After about 30 minutes of playing I noticed my MBP was getting quite hot - not enough to burn me (though getting there) - just enough to cause concern and make me want to stop. I've had the temperature of this up to 90 degrees while doing other things and never felt it this hot before or had the fans going this much. I expected it to heat up and the fans to go somewhat crazy but not this much.

I'd like this laptop to last me at least a good few years so i'm wondering if daily prolong use of doing this could cause damage to the laptop?
