OS X :: When Updating Boot Cache Then Shut Down Hangs Automatically?

Dec 13, 2009

I have a problem. I have installed Leopard on a partition on my MacBook. When install successfully completed, my Macbook restarted but it hangs and does not restart so I had to switch the power off by the power button. I then switched my MacBook back on to complete registration and finally got into Leopard.I then updated using Software Update and then restarted but it will not restart. When I try to restart i get presented with a window telling me that "Updating Boot Cache". I then click "OK" but it hangs on the desktop wallpaper and pointer. I have tried to leave my MacBook for half an hour but it is still hanging on the desktop wallpaper and pointer. Same thing happens with Shutdown

Mac Mini :: System Hangs At Gray Screen On Shut Down / Beach Ball Delaying Certain Processes

Sep 1, 2009

I have the 2.53ghz with 4gigz of Ram MacMini from Xmas 2009.A few of you know that I had been trying out different SSD's before finally jumping on with OWC 60gig SSD. I've had it for about 2 months now and it works great except I've recently been having my computer freeze and the beach ball of death appears constantly when on Safari and sometimes iMovie. After shutting down the computer manually, sometimes booting up will leave me at the grey screen for minutes before i shut it down and wait maybe 30 mins before i fire it up again, which usually works 9/10 times.

I also noticed the beach ball delaying certain processes like loading Safari or a webpage. For example, I have my OWC External hooked up via FireWire800 with just my music and videos, however occasionally if im browsing thru websites or loading a program it'll cycle the external and have the beachball as if trying to load something before proceeding. It is more an annoyance than a problem.

I ran disk utility on all my drives as well as the Apple Hardware Test CD to see if maybe my Logic Board was the problem. I did the general test as well as the indepth test, both show negative signs of a problem. Can anyone shed some light on what could be the problem?Should I put the factory drive back in and take it to Apple to run their diagnostic test?Could the SSD be failing? (I could RMA it, but didn't know if its an Apple issue vs OWC)

OS X Mavericks :: Tagging Hangs Finder

Sep 11, 2014

I am struggling with tags. I can watch the activity monitor on the server as we tag and see the finder spike thru the roof (then beach ball for two minutes!) even when tagging just 40 files. If I tag just one file I am getting the finder up to almost 50% activity.Interestingly, I also have someone tagging files over the network using the same iCloud account and I'm seeing huge activity spikes in icbaccountsd and sometimes quicklookd. I don't know if they are related but I can say that the networked machine also experiences difficulties in the same way.The files are on (various) external RAID enclosures that are connected via eSATA or SAS.

It seems only to affect the Finder because any apps running (even Premiere CC 2014 which is accessing projects and footage on those RAIDs over the network) seem to be fine. Even as the Finder goes thru the roof and then crashes. The problem also persists when tagging files on the internal hard drive. I just selected 3000 jpegs, tagged them all with ONE original tag and... BOOM Finder (Not Responding) 198% CPU and beach ball for two minutes. Then the finder goes back to being responsive.

I understand that this is NOT the norm and I'm not seeing many similar complaints. We have already forced the server to re-build the spotlight index. Next I am going to move the RAID to another computer and will update with results.I really hope that Apple takes tags all the way. Currently the foundation is there but searching is lame and tagging a lot of files is slow even without the issues above. Too much clicking...

MacBook Air :: OS X Mavericks 10.9.4 With Safari 7.0.6 Hangs And Cannot Load Any Pages

Sep 10, 2014

I have OS 10.9.4, with Safari 7.0.6.  Most of the time I cannot load any pages with Safari, even though my IMac can.  The two machines have exactly the same software, and are connected to the same Comcast wireless. The problem briefly goes away.  But after loading only a few web pages, the problem returns.  The browser begins to load a page, and then hangs.  When a page does load, it is much slower than on the desktop.

OS X Mavericks :: Any Operation Involving Finder Hangs - Beach Ball

Jun 26, 2014

Friend has 13" MBP mid 2010.  We upgraded to Mavericks about six weeks ago.  Then, about a month ago, any operation involving the Finder hangs, and I get a beach ball that lasts at least several minutes.  Other applications, like MS Office and browsers, are unaffected unless we try to open, save, or close a document.  Attempting to open any folder causes the same problem.

I replaced his old hard drive with a new SSD and did a restore from TM, and the problem came back after a few days.  Otherwise the machine works fine.  Disk Utility reads fine.

I created a new account as a test, and did not have the same problem.  So, I'm convinced it is something to do with his account, or with some app that affects his account.  It doesnt' seem to be a system problem because no one else in his SOHO is experiencing it.  And, because the second account works, I don't think it is a hardware problem like a bad cable (I've read lots about this).

I'm going to try to strip down the machine and delete a bunch of stuff like Dropbox, and I'll recreate his NAS access to see if that works.

His keychain won't remember one of two NAS passwords (I mount a TM volume and a production share on boot).  TM mounts automatically but the production mount asks for his password every time.  I've tried Keychain first aid.

OS X Mavericks :: SecurityAgent Hangs When Authorizing Changes To Certificate Trust Settings

Jun 1, 2014

I frequently encounter this totally blocking problem when attempting to authorize changes to Certificate Trust Settings.

This occurs when A dialog is presented when app such as Mail encounters a certificate whose identity is unknown. You choose to show details and select the option to "Always trust (server) when connecting to…"Click ConnectA System authorization dialog appears and immediately hangsin Activity Monitor, "SecurityAgent" is shown as not responding.

At this point there is no legitimate way to shut down or restart the Mac other than forcing a power down, since (presumably) SecurityAgent is involved in the normal shutdown process.

After restarting, when the process happens again, I am able to successfully authorize the certificate. It only occurs if the computer has been up and running for a while (hours? days?)

OS X Mavericks :: Terminal Utility Window Go To Sleep

Sep 2, 2014

One issue though is that occasionally, a terminal utility window will go to sleep (or become Zombified) and won't wake up again.

This happens when I am running a long numerical calculation from one of the tabs in the terminal window.

Normally, the numerical calculation does not print much, but will occasionally print out information about the progress of the program and sometimes error messages.  In past MAC-OSX, I had just started the numerical calculation in one tab and went on working (vim editing e.g.) in another tab in the same window, occasionally going back to check for error messages and progress.

In Mavericks OSX though at some point, the long run-time of the numerical calculation causes the whole terminal window to sleep including the tab in which I am doing the editing.

It is an interesting sleep.  The numeric calculation keeps running, so I just set the window aside to let the program finish.

Other terminal utility windows are fine but all tabs on the same window are in the sleep mode.

The sleeping windows can actually be updated to their most recent, directly visible content by hitting the yellow dot at the top left,

sending the window down to the Dock, and then reopening from the Dock.

Even after reopening the terminal window from dock, the whole window (every tab) remains asleep. Scrolling does not work, continued updating of the screen output by the numerical calculation does not work, but you can see the most recent content by using the Dock update trick.

I can work around this and change the numerical calculation to send the output and error messages to a file instead of the screen and then run the programs in background.  (Don't know if background programs will still zombify the terminal window.)

Also, I can do the editing from a separate terminal window, but at first the unexpected irreversible sleep caught me off-guard.

I realise that such automatic sleeping might be part of the reason for the large increase in speed, which is actually more important to me than maintaining the viability of each terminal window.

I am wondering though if there is some way to reanimate the sleeping terminal windows to inspect error messages more easily (i.e. scroll up to old ones).

OS X Mavericks :: Disk Utility Refuses To Copy 164 GB To 318 GB Volume

Aug 29, 2014

I use Disk Utility (stand alone, on a USB key) to make backups of my system disk to an external disk and then transfer it from my home system to a MacBook and vice-versa when I need to travel.

Recently, I upgraded from 10.9.2 to 10.9.3 and, not long later, to 10.9.4. In the same period, I also had an increase (not a very big one, just a few GB, less than 15) in the occupied space of that system disk. The current amount of data on it is 164.64 GB.

I'm not sure if my problem comes from the sub-version upgrade, from the increase in data size, from both, or from something else. The home computer is an iMac with a 318.88 GB internal disk. The MacBook has a 500 GB internal disk. The partitions used on the external disk to make bootable backups are 400 GB big.

I can backup both internal disks to the external partitions (and boot on the resulting external disk when I check that it is usable). I can also copy the external backups to the MacBook system disk and boot on the result without problem.

But, recently, Disk Utility has started to refuse copying the content of the external backup partitions to the internal disk of the home system. It says there is insufficient space on the target volume. If the error message is correct, it means that I cannot backup 164.64 GB of data on a 318.88 GB volume!

For the record, the external backup partitions are OK when verified with SOS.

OS X Mavericks :: Disk Utility - Restore Failure / Not Enough Space

Sep 3, 2014

I just used Disk Utility to make a backup of a MBA (65GB) onto a 500GB external drive (Restore from internal HDD to external HDD). I then reformatted the internal hard disk and proceeded to restore my backup (external HDD to internal HDD). I soon received an error message stating "Restore Failure - not enough space". I guess that means Disk Utility backups are a one-way operation, since you can't restore from a larger drive to a smaller one? Is there something I am overlooking? I ended up using Carbon Copy Cloner to do the job, but I'm wondering how (if?) restoring from a larger backup drive is possible using Disk Utility?

OS X Mavericks :: (10.9.4) Files Show In Disk Utility But Not In Finder

The drive mounts in Finder, but is extremely slow. In Disk Utility, the drive shows the correct disk space usage and number of files; but in Finder it only shows the folders/files at the root level of the drive, and each has a size of zero bytes with no items:

What is happening? How can I access the data (it's obviously still there if DU shows the files) and (possibly) fix this?

OS X Mavericks :: Change Partition Of External Drive Using Disk Utility?

Aug 25, 2014

I wish to change partition scheme, sizes, in an external drive. All the partitions are MacOS extended (Journaled) and they map, according to the layout in Disk Utility, as follows: Partion 1, 2, 3,4 where 1 is at the top and 4, the bottom. I want to make partition 2 larger, so I decreased partition 1 by half. Now the layout is 1 a, 1b, 2,3,4., where 1b is now free space. Disk Utility will not allow me to increase the size of  partition 2 by dragging the corner. Which of the following options (if any) will allow me to increase the size of partition 2, without erasing the data, using Disk Utility:Select partition 2 and manually writing a new value in the size box, equal to the present partition’s size plus the free space? If I delete partition 1 completely, will I then be able to increase the size of partition 2?If I delete partitions 1, 3, and 4, will I then be allowed to increase the size of partion 2?Is there another option?

(Actually, partition 3 is an eDrive, a data recovery utility created by TechTool Pro 7, so I don’t really know how it’s formatted.)
