OS X Mavericks :: Power Shut Down / File Is Not Updated
Sep 12, 2014
Saved my .AI file I was working on, the power shut down in the office and when I restarted my computer, the file was 2 previous saves before. I lost important info. Is there a way to find a hidden file from somewhere in outer space to access the most saved version of the file. I DO save my files often to avoid some basic issues, but this one seems like a software glitch.

While I was creating a multiple .rar file I accidentally shut down the power, after restarting the imac it won't respond and the only thing I can do is move the mouse cursor, but nothing reacts.

I'm using a B&W Power Mac G3 with 512MB RAM and OS X Tiger for a SMB file server (with 5 users) and a USB printer server. Everything is working good, but I have a problem.
It doesn't have a monitor or keyboard/mouse attached normally (I can configure it via VNC). The problem is that I would like to be able to turn the machine off when it's not needed (like at night sometimes, days when I won't be home, etc.). I would like to just hit the power button and have it turn off, however it puts it to sleep instead.
Normally, sleep would be fine, except on the B&W, the fans still run, just the HDs shut off, so it's still noisy as heck.
Is there a way to make the power button shut it off? If not, any other easy methods of shutting it off you can think of? Via VNC won't cut it, as my dad needs to be able to turn it on (not a problem) or off as well.

I just used software updater this morning (Oct. 22,2010). Now when I go to open an excel file, it appears to open but doesn't. I can open up other excel files. Other people can open up this same file. I even had someone re-save file with new name, and it still won't open. If I open it directly from Entourage, it will open excel, but not the workbook. The workbook isn't hidden, as I've tried to print and unhide workbook, but it's acting as if there's no workbook open. I think this has something to do with the updated software from this week.

(Aug. 21, 2014)I just updated to OS-X Maverick 10.9.4, and now I get a guest user option at login. I never saw this before and didn't change any settings.
Could I have been hacked?

When I updated my MacBook Air software from 10.6.8 to Maverick I lost all my videos in the process. Where did they go and how do I get them back? Did they all end up in various events folders in iphoto? They used to also be separate from the photos in the video folder on the harddrive but are no longer there.

I work everyday with my 21.5' iMac and it had OS Lion before I updated to Mavericks last month. As I work with lots of files, I have also a 1TB Lacie external drive pluged into it via firewire and I constantly access these files. After I updated though, I'm experiencing a strange problem. Everytime I search for a file on Finder, all the results that come up can't be edited or even selected. This is driving me crazy because I must open another tab and go all the way through the file I want as I can't select any file from the searches. All the search results come up written in gray color and with a empty circle on its left side. I can't even click on them! For better explanation, here is a picture of what happens:
Before the update, I used to normally access every result the search came up to.
I have another iMac here in the network with Mavericks too and all the searches returns with selectable and editable results.

My G5 has developed a problem with restarting. Basically if I restart it gets to the grey screen with the apple logo and the spinning thing but shuts down as soon as it gets to the blue screen. This will happen for as many times as I care to restart it. The only solution I have come across is to take out the SDRAM modules and swap them round (any combination will do as long as they are swapped) and bingo, it starts again as if nothing was wrong.
Initially I had four 512k modules from Crucial and recently replaced them with two 1024 modules from another manufacturer to see if that would solve it but it didn't. Zapping the PRAM also didn't work. I should say also that around the same time it developed a habit of shutting down mid-use, but this was solved by switching the processor usage from high to automatic.

My 15" early 2008 MacBook Pro won't shut down unless I hold the power button. I have done extensive searches and have done the following and the problem still persists. I have pulled the battery to reset the SMC or whatever it is called. I ran disk utilities and repaired the permissions. I deleted unnecessary files in the preferences folder...... still no go..... in fact it won't load software updates because it gets hung up.... then I have to force quit it by holding the power button..... I am at a loss.

Is this an indication that some hardware item is needing replacing? After a shut-down I'm having to keep the power button depressed for probably up to a minute before the system comes to life.

I tried to copy some files and as the transfer was about to be completed, I got halted and a screen message appeared in 4 languages forcing me to shut down the computer. A similar message had only appeared twice in the last couple of months, but I didn't pay any attention, since the system worked fine after restart. (I have been using G4 for more than 8 years). But now every time I try to copy any kind of files from anywhere to anywhere, just as it is about to be competed, I get the same "shut down" screen.

So I came home today and found my TC sitting silently coolly in the dark. I tried another plug on my UPS and reseated the power cable. No luck it won't power on. When I have it replaced at the apple store am I SOL with the backed up data? Will they swap the drive? I guess since its just a backup it doesn't matter so much, but backing up two macs from scratch will sure take ages. Anyone else had a working TC just shut down and refuse to power on?

My macbook has developed a problem where when the lid is shut and the power is connected it wakes up from sleep and then goes back to sleep and repeats this process every 30-60 seconds.
What's weird is it doesn't wake from sleep and get stuck in this loop whenthe lid is open and the power is connected and I select sleep from the Apple menuwhen the lid is shut and the power is NOT connected and is running from the battery
I recently updated my mac to Snow Leopard and put in a new HDD and since doing so the problem has been occurring.

Over the last year I now and again get this strange this happening where the computer would freeze and the fan would come on at full speed and be very loud. It also started happening when I turn off the computer for a while and turn it back on again. It would not start up and the fan would just kick in. The only way I could get it going was to manually turn the machine on and off until it would eventually turn on properly. Sometimes I would have to do this 4 or 5 times.
Then today the computer just turned itself off automatically. No warning, nothing, just click and off like when you have a power cut, but there was no power cut. So I ran a quick hardware test from the OS installation disk and it said that it detected 2 faulty RAM sticks at startup. I was worried it might be a logic board problem but that has come back on the test saying it is okay.
Would having faulty RAM cause the above to happen? And how reliable is the hardware test that comes with the Apple OS installation disk? I am praying it is just RAM and nothing more expensive. I am gonna clean out the fan today, and dust things down a little bit just in case it is a bit of dirt or something, but I would be interested in other people's opinions.

My MacBook Pro froze while I was using it, so I shut it down manually with the power button. When I turned it on again, the screen with the Apple came up and the small spinning wheel is showing, indicating that it is loading, but it won't going any further than that, so I can't start it up or access any of my data. What can I do?

We're not used to having the computer's power button on the keyboard. Occasionally, when trying to hit Delete, one of us turns off the computer power. I'm wondering if there is a setting (I really don't know my way around macs or I'd check myself) that can trigger the shutdown only after the power button has been held 3 seconds or more. This would prevent those accidental shutdowns.

After the last software update my printer wasn't recognizing ink cartridge. So I uninstalled its software. Now I can't find its drivers anywhere. Epson's website says check your Mac software updates and doesn't offer to download the driver directly. But there are no available updates for my computer as of now. How do I find and install the driver?

This morning the hard drive on my G5 sounded like it was at 8000 rpm's and there was a message on my screen to shut down the computer using the power button. I did this. Now anytime I try to power back up, I get the white screen with the apple and the "booting" icon, which then goes to a blue screen with the same icon, which then is just the blue screen with my mouse icon floating around. Also, on the random occasion, after booting to the blue screen it takes me to a DOS looking screen that asks for my login and password, of which I have neither.

I tried the "search" box before making this thread. Would like to know if the power supply from a 2008 MacPro work on a 2006 MacPro. If anyone has tried this? My 2006 MacPro shut down suddenly and would not turn on. I use an APC UPS plugged on a power surge outlet. The Mac technician who examined the unit suspected it might be the power supply but Apple may not have in stock the power supply for the Ist Gen MacPro.

Just recently (this night,) whenever I would unplug my main USB hub, my iMac (Late 2006) would turn off (that is, instantly shut down as if the power had been disconnected). I don't know why this happened, but it turned on immediately afterward so I shrugged it off. The last time this happened, (the 4th time,) the iMac wouldn't turn back on at all.
It responds to power button presses, and you can hear the harddrive spinning up and the CD drive whirring and fans spinning. The sleep light in front stays on, but the display stays black, and it doesn't make the characteristic chime when it "turns on". In addition, it doesn't seem to be delivering power to USB devices, so there's no way that I can boot up from a startup disc or anything to see what's going on.
What do you guys think could be wrong with my computer? I doubt my non-existant applecare would cover anything of this sort, and I'm pretty sure that i'm SOL for hopes of a computer that just works. In addition, one other question. I was working on a VERY important school assignment at the time, (cliche, I know,) so is there any way I can connect another computer to my iMac so I can get my school assignment off of it?

I have a 20" intel-based dual core Mac which i have had for about since early 2006, i haven't had any big issues with it until a few days ago when it suddenly shut itself down and refused to power back up. I ran through the checklist that Apple Support provides, including resetting the SMC by unplugging everything and waiting 15 seconds or so but none of it worked. Eventually I just left the power cord unplugged overnight and in the morning I plugged it back in.
After having the power cord plugged in for a few hours and the machine turned off, i tried pressing the power button again and to my amazement it powered back on! Immediately i ran the TechTool Deluxe software that came with my extended protection plan (now expired) and everything was fine. Later that night however, I had left my computer on for a few hours before returning to it and realizing it had shut itself off again. Now I am back to where I started, going through the checklist provided by Apple and am really starting to get concerned. Does anyone know of anything else I can do, short of taking it in to an Apple store? Or is something needed to be replaced?
