OS X Mavericks :: MDS-Stores 99.9% CPU Causing Freeze On Log In
Jun 22, 2014
My macbook running mavericks froze earlier today with everything but the mouse becoming unresponsive, since then I have tried rebooting in safe mode (which has been fine) and then normally a number of times, but everytime I do I always end up with the same problem i started with. I managed to get activity monitor open before it froze the last time and found that mds_stores is running at 99.9% CPU.Â
I understand that it is in relation to spotlight but have spotlight set to look at nothing in system prefs.Â
is there any way I can start up without the system remembering to start the process that is causing mds_stores to run as I feel this is the problem. I have tried quitting the process in activity monitor to no avail.

When I play an online game, flash game or game like world of warcraft, at random times my mac (MacBook) will freeze up, everything on it, the sound will start skipping, the mouse won't move and the screen is skipping. I have gotten a new hard drive, and 1 gig of memory, but neither fixed the problem, I'm thinking more Vram seeing as this is what it is right now, VRAM (Total):64 MB of shared system memory, and that seems very low. But then again I'm not really sure what VRAM is. I've gone to a specialist and the Mac store and they both say they have never seen this and just gave me some BS and made me waste money buying more memory and a new hard drive.

I bought an iMac about 2 weeks ago and when accessing files from external hard drives I will get the spinning beach ball and all of the programs will become unresponsive and the only way to relieve the problem is to power down the computer. We have two 3 TB Seagate HDs connected via USB.

Where does the HP Scan software stores the scanned images? I know there's an option to save the images to desktop after scan, but before I save it to desktop where does it store the files? It needs to be somewhere because I see the image in the app.Â

I just updated the OS to 10.9.4, and in the ~6 hours since doing so, my computer has locked up twice. Right in the middle of doing a task, all response ceases except for mouse movement. Three-finger salute is ineffective, and the only solution is the power button.Â
Is it possible to roll back to 10.9.3?Â
I have a 2.3 Ghz Intel Core i7 with 16 GB of RAM

I've got two interfaces, in this order:Â
1. Wi-Fi connection to Apple time capsule that links to the internet - 10.0.1.9Â
2. LAN connection to ISP that links to the internet -Â 10.0.2.250Â
This works perfectly well, however, I would like to rout traffic through the second link, not just have it as a fail-over.Â
So, I use the route command, like this:Â route -n add -host 197.242.144.171 10.0.2.250route -n add -host 197.242.144.175 10.0.2.250route -n add -host 173.194.41.182 10.0.2.250Â
This doesn't give any errors and a netstat -nr shows
197.242.144.171Â Â Â 10.0.2.250Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â UGHSÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 0Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 1Â Â Â Â en0197.242.144.175Â Â Â 10.0.2.250Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â UGHSÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 0Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 0Â Â Â Â en0173.194.41.182Â Â Â Â 10.0.2.250Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â UGHSÂ Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â Â 0Â Â Â Â Â Â 12Â Â Â Â en0Â
If, though, I try trace route, this is what I get:Â traceroute 197.242.144.175traceroute to 197.242.144.175 (197.242.144.175), 64 hops max, 52 byte packetstraceroute: sendto: Cannot allocate memory1 traceroute: wrote 197.242.144.175 52 chars, ret=-1Â
It looks as if, somehow, the route command is corrupting the normal routin

I am having very frequent system freezes (multiple per day) then when restart the restart is very slow. Activity Monitor shows TechToolsupportDaemon taking up 99-120% of CPU for extended periods. I have a MacBook Pro 15-iInch, Early 2011, with 2.3 GHz Intel Core i7; 8 GB 1333MHz DDR3; Intel HD Graphics 3000 512 MB; running OS X 10.9.3 (13D65). Â
I am also having episodes for sudden abnormal graphics with jagged lines, Screen split vertically with multiple horizontal lines. Screen becomes totally unreadable. Then sudden total screen freeze.Â
I made rescue system drives on flash drive when I first shifted to Maverick, so I could use Disk Utility to Verify and/or repair the main disk. When I upgraded to the next edition of Maverick, my flash drives no longer worked. I tried to upgrade the flash drives to the new system, but there was not enough room. I tried erasing the drives but now I have a flash drive with only a small amount of space, the rest is hidden and locked.Â
What do I need to do to correct the problem of frequent freezes, and then How can I free space on my flash drives?

I am using Preview version 5.5.2 on Mac OS 10.7.4.Â
1- When I carry out changes on a JPG file, Preview automatically saves the changes to the ORIGINAL FILE! I never press cmd-s or do anything else to save the changes as I want to store the resulting picture in a new file. The original should NEVER be changes! Obviously I am doing something wrong!Â
2- There is no "Save as" menu item in the File menu. Why? Instead there is "Export ..." that I don't really understand. What was wrong with "Save as"? The rest of the world is using "Save as". So why did Apple change this menu item to something different?Â
3- When I export a export a file, it is changed WITHOUT file extension even when you specify the file type like JPEG or PNG. So instead of storing the file as "somename.jpg", it simply stores it as "somename"! Is this again another change of Apple because they think it is better to do so for the user?Â
Never touch a running system! Preview was good enough previously. This modernisation is just a pain!Â

I am having issues with Facebook on Safari. Over the past few months Facebook does not act correctly when I load it into Safari. The main issues are Safari no longer stores my FB password. I have cleared it from my keychain, but it will not give me a prompt to save it again. Second, when I am logged into my account, the search box's submit button on the top left will not work (it will not recognize it as a button) and this happens throughout various FB pages with other buttons.
Lastly, it will log me out and I will relog in and it will not let me log in, it just keeps kicking back to the log in page. I can open and operate FB in both Firefox and Camino without a problem. I don't know what is causing this. It just happens with FB and no other sites. I do have AdBlock, but this started to happen before I installed that.

I just upgraded to iPhoto 8 and noticed the contents of the library where not stored in the 'pictures' folder on the 'home' folder as it was on previous versions. However the iPhoto file (in the 'pictures' folder that is) increases in size when photos are added.
Are all your photos embedded in that file?
If not how do you back up your iPhoto library? AND how do you access photos individually outside of the iPhoto app?
I didn't find the folder hierarchy very intuitive in previous versions but at least it was all there in folders in the primary 'pictures' folder.

If you have to buy your new iMac from one of the retail stores rather than online you will no doubt have had worries about the keyboard.
With the small keyboard bundled many stores will not allow the option of a larger keyboards. Some people have posted here however that some stores where swapping out keyboards for them, others even managed to get a free full size keyboard sent to them after calling apple and complaining.
I'm hoping people will post their keyboard experiences here along with the apple store they visited to help build up a reference list for others in this situation.
I'll start by saying the apple store in Liverpool ONE , will not, under any circumstances swap out keyboards.

I have the base model 13" MBP in my possession, but I have been trying to return it for a 13" 2.53ghz machine since last Friday. And even until today, they have been out of stock of this particular model. I have called all the Apple Stores in my area and they have been out of stock for about 5-6 days. I checked the online store and all 2.53ghz models (13" or 15") are backordered 5-7 days. All other models ship within 24 hours.
So, what are your experiences at your Apple Store in regards to the stock of 13" 2.53ghz model? Are the higher end 13" selling this well, or could there be a problem producing/sourcing enough 2.53ghz processors?I will continue to wait until they are back in stock until then.

I really, REALLY need the Magic mouse - is it available in the physical, bricks and mortar Apple stores yet?. My local Apple store (Leicester, UK) said call back tomorrow as they're expecting new Mac stock but does that include the Magic mouse? If anyone has bought one, I'd be pleased to hear from you/them.

I just upgraded my iTunes to 10.6. I seem to be having a different issue than most other people. My itunes opens and syncs with everything fine. However, while listening to music, iTunes randomly takes up 80%-105% of the CPU which causes my entire computer to slowdown and everything becomes choppy. eventually the music starts to get choppy and skip, so then i just have to shut down iTunes and the computer performance returns to normal. I can watch the activity monitor with iTunes running and can see the CPU stay around 5-10% and then all of a sudden spikes to around 105% and then back down and then back up to 70-80% and stays there awhile, eventually causing the choppy performance all around.
I didn't have any of these issues before the update. I have tried reinstalling itunes, repairing permissions, zapping the pram, all the usual diagnostic tricks, but i still have the same problem. with all the issues other people seem to be having, i would hope apple will release an update soon, and hopefully that will also fix my issue, but I don't see other people having this problem and was wondering if anyone know anything I could check in the meantime?

I just put a Maxmedia 640 GB SATA HDD in my 2009 Macbook Pro and since then it's been acting wierd. From initial start-up it's really slow but gets faster over time, still there is a persistant lag that kicks in every now and then, mostly when Firefox is involved. I don't think the hard drive is acting up. I can hear the disk spinning and can hear it read and write. Like I said most of the lag is around Firefox but after a while of heavier use the whole system returns to normal.
