Jun 8, 2010This is my (second) first post, and I tried using mrooogle to find the issue (i've been a lurker for the most part) I can't seem to find any consensus or info on it.
I have the 2.4 core i5 15" MBP with HR Glossy display, just got it on Monday, installed an owc ssd, and 8 gb of ram and i LOVE IT. The only issue is when the graphics card switches from the nVidia back to the Intel graphics, the screen briefly blanks out or "blinks" for a split second and the Intel graphics comes back on. It doesn't blink when it goes from intel to nvidia, only from nvidia back to intel.

May 17, 2009I'm thinking about selling off my 1st Gen Mac Pro and buying a new one. I use boot camp once in a while to run Vista 64-bit just for playing the Total War series of games, specifically Medieval 2 and now Empire. Any advice on best graphics card setup for those particular games under bootcamp? I'm not at all worried about on the OS X side of things as I don't really do anything graphic intensive there. I saw the new Nvidia GTX 285 is coming out soon. Any thoughts on that vs the Radeon 4870s? I'm currently running dual Radeon 3870s with crossfire but because I'm on a 1st Gen Mac Pro I can't get everything out of them so I think I may want to upgrade to a new Mac Pro.

Aug 9, 2010I'm in a bit of trouble at work. One of our Mac Pro's won't display anything. It starts up as it should be the screen stays black. We've tried with several monitors. A Mac Partner was 99% sure it was the graphics card which was the problem.
So now I'm thinking about just finding a new graphics card and replace it myself, but I have a few questions.
The original card was a ATI Radeon HD 2600 XT (256mb) and I've tried to find some suppliers for this, but it seems its not that easy to get your hands on so i was hoping that we could upgrade it to a newer one instead. But I need to know which ones will actually work with this model and if they need to be a specific version of model to work with the Mac Pro.

1. Does CS5 (especially photoshop) make much use of graphics cards in general, and will the 5870 make a big difference in speed over the 5770?
2. Is the 5870 going to make things louder? (i have a G5 now and it's like a jet engine, so I'm hoping for a quieter machine)
3. Will the 5870 use a lot more power than the 5770?

Nov 12, 2009ven an everyday user may consider such a card if the price is within budget which currently isn't. It isn't targeted at gamers who need every ounce of performance though.
It appears to be geared towards Apple since it debuted with onboard DisplayPorts. However, it should be noted on their specs page that the system requirements currently do not list any version of Mac OSes. Matrox do list Linux support though. Do note that they didn't leave out regular DVI users. Direct Link for more details on the specs.

Sep 1, 2010I have looked at the online material for Aperature and Lightroom and am not sure if either of these will allow me to do this. I have been using finder but that is a painful process as I need to have 11 windows open and keep jumping back and forth between windows. There has to be a more efficient way to get through this.
So, I am curious if either of the programs I mentioned would do the trick, or some other software? Programs like PSE really don't help for this. Adobe Bridge was somewhat useful but also needs multiple copies of the program running at the same time to use multiple folders.

Sep 26, 2009Basically, I wanted to just go on a simple game of Runescape with a friend of mine, and on High detail it was lagging... Now I'm sorry, but I have run High Detail on a freakin 4 year old dell with a 128mb internal gfx card and it hasn't lagged.
Is there a way I can check which graphics card is being used? Is there a way I can force it to use the 9600M GT?

Sep 16, 2009Regardless of wether the computer is set for High Performance or Better energy Savings in System Prefs, its always seems to default to 9600M. It worked fine for about a month before the problem developed. The problem itself isn't that recent but it was over summer and didn't bother me a lot because I was at home a lot, but now that I am at College, having a computer that can hit 8 hours of battery life instead of ~2 would be really good.
I went to system Profiler to make sure that the OS could still detect the 9400 and it does. The problem developed under Leopard and continued into Snow Leopard. All software is up to date and all Firmware updates have been applied.

I think it's GeForce or something.I've heard in the past that the video card/graphics could not be upgraded in the Macs. Not sure if this is true or if it has changed.Is there any possible way on Earth that I could send the MacBook into a shop and get the video card/graphics updated? It doesn't have to be Apple; a genuine third party would do.

Feb 5, 2012I have a MacBook Pro 15" 2.66 GHz Intel Core i7 (Mid-2010). I have auto graphics switching turned on in the Energy Saver prefs. But it never switches. It stays on the nVidia card all the time.
I have tried switching to Text Edit, Mail, BBEdit, and other non-graphics intensive apps. It stays on nVidia. It stays on nVidia even when I unplug and use battery power.
I can manually change it to Intel, and it works fine. When I change it back to auto switching, it stays on nVidia continuously.
