MacBook :: Differences In The Older Versus Newer Unibody Screen
May 27, 2009
I've heard that there have been some differences between the older and newer Macbook screens - I'm thinking about buying a reburb unibody macbook and want to know how significant the difference is. If it's big enough I'll use my student discount to get a new mac with an iPod and then sell the iPod for the price difference, but that is a lot more work and initial money spent vs just getting a refurb. Does anyone have any experience with both?

So I have a 1.8ghz dual G5 with 3gb of ram for work. I mainly work in Adobe CS and do a far amount of Photoshop work. At any given time I may have all of Adobe CS plus Office and a few other apps running -- and a gazillion fonts. Went to the store and saw the new 24" iMac. How would a new iMac compare to my late '04 1.8DP G5? On that same note, how would a new MacBook Pro compare to the above?

I have a 23" cinema display from November of 2006. Is this compatible with my newer MacBook Pro, which is from June 2009. It's not the most recent MBP - I bought it just before they refreshed the line a week or two later. If the display will work, which adapter do I need? Micro DVI? Mini DisplayPort?

list the differences between the 15" and 17" MBP's, with focus on the high res matte options.
The obvious difference is the larger&higher resolution display on the 17" and the extra 1.0 pound of weight and about $100 extra. The 17" also has no USB reader slot, but eSATA. The 17" is also 0.1" thicker.

I have a MBP, bought in '06, that is dying a slow death (crashing constantly). I'm not up on what the latest spec's mean in terms of USER EXPERIENCE. Apple doesn't seem to know how to market to me--no product comparisons (in direct user experience vs. tech spec's), no analogies, no examples of how new MBPs and Airs differ or what their targeted user profile really is.

I got a new MBP (running Snow Leopard). I used Migration Assistant to migrate the data and setting from my old MBP (running Leopard) from my Time Capsule backup onto the new MBP. All went smoothly, and I used the new computer for a day to check all was well. This included testing Time Machine on the existing Time Capsule - all the old backups were there and it worked perfectly. the new computer also successfully added to these backups. So I wanted to refresh the old mac, so I booted from the old Leopard install disk, wiped the drive with Disk Utility, and did a clean install of Leopard. All was fine. Now I connected to the Time Capsule and attempted to use Migration Assistant to put a my stuff back onto the old computer. It wouldn't do this (couldn't see any backups). Does Migration Assistant only allow transfers from old systems onto new, not the other way round? This is a major bummer, if so. How can I get my stuff from my new computer back onto my old? Do I have to upgrade the old one to Snow Leopard in order to do this?

I have a new 2.53 Macbook Pro coming in the mail this week and I want to swap my current 7200rpm drive from a Second Generation 2.16 Core Duo Macbook Pro into my new computer. My question is this:
Would it be a better idea to erase the drive before swapping it to the new Unibody MBP, or can I just throw it in and run off the current OS installed on it (10.5.7). The OS should be the same on the new computer since its the same most current version of Leopard. I dont really know if this is possible since its an entirely different computer.

Can a 500gb HD from a new (unibody) be used in a 2006 older body style MBP? Want to replace my old 120GB HD with a new 500GB drive that came out of a new MBP. Both are SATA. Not sure is the physical drive size is compatible.

What's the difference between the two? Is the new one thinner than the old? Is the connections the same? Etc, etc, etc? What I would like to do is maybe take out the original keyboard and replace it with the newer model, along with the new trackpad. Is this possible, or no? I don't care if the material is different, but I'm just wondering if it'd actually work?

I bought a new MBP last week.It is still sitting in its box.I am on my old ibook g4 with half a broken screen as I don't want to scratch my new MBP.I am a poor collage student that wants to take good care of my big purchase. It was the laptop or a used car and I went with the laptop as my g4 got hurt.Biggest purchase I have made EVER.My g4 was fine and very well cared for but I have diabetes and passed out and fell on the ibook
I was very jazzed about buying a hardshell to protect my computer. Then seen [URL] had some nasty reviews about both the incase & speck. So I thought crap what should I do.
Incase I have read that computer only stays at one angle? That it dose not close all the way or makes a popping sound when it rubs the back.I am sure some could be due to not installing it right.Someone even said they could not get off and apple took it off and the top part of the computer broke
I didn't see to much on Speck but did read on this forum more people prefer incase?I figure you all know what you are talking about when it comes to what is good bad for the mac items so kinda registered to get some Ideas on what to get.

Is there a way on the older MacBooks to make the display fade down to the low setting before it sleeps? On my Pro right now, it just snaps down. Does anyone know of an application or something?

I was walking into my friends house the other night with my Macbook Pro in an Incase sleeve and it fell out of my hands and onto the concrete. I assume it landed on the edge of the screen and bent it inward. The screen and everything work properly and the issue is only cosmetic but it's driving me crazy.
I have an appointment at the genius bar tomorrow but would like to know how much Apple would charge for repair beforehand. If anyone has experience with this please chime in.

This has happened 2 times (rarely). Basically, when I wake up the macbook pro, the screen would remain "blank". I know the screen is on because I can see the mouse pointer but the whole screen is black. I'm assuming Finder has crashed?
I don't know how to restart on the macbook (ctrl + alt + del didn't work, using option didn't either) so I just held down the power button for 4 seconds and restarted that way.

what should i used to clean the aluminum unibody, when it comes to the lcd screen i know alcohol and other solutions are bad for lcd because of the thin flim layer but the macbook pro has glass so it should'nt hurt the screen to use those kind of products.

It doesn't seem to be tied to anything specific. Just a random black screen flash.

if anyone else is having problems with their unibody Macbook pro screen getting washed out after a while - especially if the computer has been put into and woken from sleep. I run a 24 inch dell monitor along side my MBP in dual monitor mode, the MBP the slave monitor, with the Dell the main monitor. After a while of use, approx 2 hours, the macbook pro screen fades out/appears washed out. It seems to settle after either a restart or dimming the MBP screen to black for a few minutes. My MBP is not on a cooling stand but I'm going to get one Is this a heat thing, a firmware thing or a defective hardware? I'm running 10.5.6 and have updated the firmware/efi as per apple updates.

Have had this macbook for just over a week, purchased off original owner who bought in Feb this year with Applecare warranty. Upgraded ram immediately to a G.Skill 4Gb kit. 4 days ago, computer randomly froze with horizontal coloured bar. Called Apple next day, the guy there told me that sometimes this happens, and that I should only be worried if this occurs ago. 4 days later, we are at this present scenario: In the last hour or so, has crashed 3 times. Programs running in common were iTunes and Safari.

It'll be interesting to see if the screen in the 13" MBP announced yesterday is the same one that Apple quietly started putting in the MB a couple of months ago. Someone recently posted that Apple changed the display in their UMB after they complained about the washed-out look of the screen. I wonder how difficult it would be to get Apple to agree to a replacement based on the differences between the old and new displays.

Just got my new macbook pro last week, been having some problems ever since i changed my ram to Kingston 1066MHz DDR3, supposedly to be compatible with the MBP.
I have experienced horizontal lines of flickering and freeze of my entire system, which requires me to do a hard reset. I have recorded a video of it here.
I have also experienced similar type of freeze, but the screen pixels just cluster together at the top 20% of the screen, much like this.
I have ALSO experienced my keyboard totally not responding when i try to recover from a password saved screensaver!! The mouse is working fine, but the system just can't detect any keystroke input, forcing me to shutdown forcefully again!
I don't have time to send in my MBP as i need to work on it, and cannot do without a machine, any ideas how to resolve this?
May i also know which rams are compatible with Mac?

Is there a difference? Anything at all? I would expect Apple to make the 2010 standard res. screens worse in quality and earn more money since they have the higher res. available. I really like the 2009 glossy screen, but i have to be sure it is exactly the same this year. If they did something like that it's typical Apple.

I bought a new unibody Macbook pro in December and have had it linked to a Dell 2408WFP for 4 months now (dell monitor as primary monitor, macbook as slave via apple mini displayport to DVI adapter) and I am also using the dell USB ports to hook up my apple wired keyboard and logitech revolution MX mouse. Problems occurring ever since the beginning include: Occasionally the computer refuses to wake up either screen. It may flash blue and look like its going to come out of sleep (or monitor shut off) with no problems but then hangs. This is intermittent and I cant seem to trouble shoot what causes it. On top of that, more frequently, the Macbook screen looks washed out (loss of colour depth). It doesnt flash and there are no blank/white areas of screen, just very poor colour depth. This can occur even coming out of screen saver mode. It seems to correct itself with time or disconnecting the dell monitor. Main programs I always leave open are Firefox +/- Transmission. Seems to happen regardless of programs being open or not. Have updated everything that Software Update can find to update. Anyone else having these problems or have any ideas how to fix?
