View 5 Replies View RelatedI've noticed over the last few days that whatever i save, (word doc, iphoto, e-mail, iweb, final draft scripts) or create a new folder... it doesn't show on the desktop unitl i either restart the machine or log out and then log back in... and then all the files that haven't been appeared at the time show up.Any ideas on how to stop this without giving my machine a clean instal?

I am trying to fix a friends macbook pro. When I turn it on the screen shows the apple and the spiral underneath it spinning like it should then when it stalls for .2 seconds it goes to a white screen then there is vertical purple lines in groups across the screen. So the screen is white/purple. Then it fades to just white and I cant do anything.
I hooked up my monitor with a DVI cable to see if it was the motherboard that was possibly bad but the monitor works just fine with the cable. I can use the computer with the laptop keyboard/mouse and it works just fine. The laptop screen just stays blank the whole time. I uploaded a vid to utube for it. If anybody has any ideas for me please help. I dont know if this is a monitor problem or the inverter or the motherboard, possibly some other piece of hardware?

I have looked high and low for a way to prevent my screen from dimming after about 2 minutes and have found nothing to help. The screen doesn't go completely dark, it just loses brightness. Here's what happens: I load a guitar chords page and begin to practice the song on the computer screen. After about two minutes the screen goes dim, which is very annoying and is difficult for me to see.
Every proposed solution I've come across refers me to the Energy Saver in the System Preferences. The problem is that the Energy Saver in the System Preferences for my desktop computer does not have the same selections as an Energy Saver in the System Preferences for a laptop. As is seen in the picture below, I don't have selections for dimming preferences that a laptop has. I don't want to install some third party program (like Caffeine) if I can avoid it. How I can disable this dimming feature on my computer?
I have a 27 inch desktop. Upon turning the computer on within seconds the fan comes on. Then it goes to a high fan. Then it goes to a black screen. Then it shuts off. I recently bought a new Mac Mini with a 24 inch Philips display. When I connected the display and started up the computer, it booted up and showed the grey apple screen, but it never made it past that. On the screen it reads "cannot display this video mode, change computer display input to 1920x1080@60Hz." As you might have realized, I can't get onto the computer to do so because I cannot see what I am doing. This is extremely frustrating because I had my Mini hooked into my friend's tv and it worked perfectly right away and now I can't even get it to connect. Does anybody know any hotkeys/solutions to this problem?

A few days ago I updated to Lion 10.7 with which I have had no problem. A day later I installed Moneywiz, Skydrive for mac and did some updates of various software. Since then, if starting from cold, my imac starts in safe mode. I get the start-up sound; then the white screen with Apple logo; then the spinning sun; then the progress bar; then the grey screen with "safe mode" in the top right and user log-in (although I don't have log-in set in my options). Once running in safe mode I can shut-down and re-start; or just re-start and it will load properly. I have tried starting with mouse/keyboard on/off. Is this a Lion thing or what.

The problem first presented itself as I am working on a generative video installation using Max6. I've used the older mini for the installations for some time with very few issues. I've been using the newer mini for video processing, compression, and editing and making DVDs and blu-ray disks. No issues there that I have noticed either. However, when I recently tried to use the newer mini to run the generative video, I noticed that several of the videos were stopping and then starting up again (skipping). I know that Max can sometimes have trouble with videos due to processing issues - but why would it work fine on the older, less powerful machine and only have issues on the newer one?Â
To begin troubleshooting, I ran one of the videos in Quicktime on the newer mini to see if similar issues arose, and they do. No problem on the older mini. The video is formatted in DVCPRO50 anamorphic format, and I am using the same monitor in both cases (1440x900,60Hz), connected by VGA to the monitor PC input. I know that Quicktime can have similar issues with very large files sometimes, but I still don't see why the newer machine stumbles with the same video that runs fine on the older one.Â
I've been hoping to start using higher resolution videos in this work, but am worried that if a newer machine can't handle these SD videos, HD will be worse. I like the minis for installations because of their small size and portability.Â

My newest discovery is that when my computer freezes up what ever sound is playing makes a skipping noise and then I have to kill power to shut off what is the cause or how can I find out is there any log I can run or check to see the last action process that went on?

I followed the instructions and removed the old ram, put in the new ram and after many restarts my computer finally came up. When it did finally come up I had the spinning wheel of death. When the screensaver came on, I heard my skype connect and I moved my mouse and wouldn't you know my computer was working! So to test to see if my computer would work again, I restarted. Same thing - came right up to spinning wheel - screen saver turned on after 30 minutes and again - Skype connected and no more spinning. Memory on Activity Monitor is looking great - but my computer is useless until the screen saver starts.

Looking for a bit of direction. My MacMini got flooded (please don't ask!); and has pretty well died (BTW, I'm in Switzerland). The repair quote from an authorised Apple shop was for about the same as a new Mac Mini. Makes sense for me to do that...

I've got limited hard drive space. In gmail, I keep my inbox pared down to just a few emails I'm actively working on (ie 3-10 emails at a time). Everything else gets archived. However, when I try to set up Mac Mail for gmail (as described on 50 different websites), my computer starts downloading thousands of emails - my sent mail, anything I've tagged, etc. I don't want all this. I just want the few active emails (my inbox) at any one time.
I've tried mapping folders in Mail (ie Use this folder for....), but can't seem to pare it down to just the inbox.
I had a question regarding downloads with emails. Every time I download a file and specify "Save Linked Download As" it will never pull the download name. Instead it will say "Mail" instead of the actual file name. I don't have this problem when I download it to my download folder. This happens with every email service I have tried.
