Intel Mac :: Upgraded Memory - Computer Useless Until Screensaver Starts
Jun 1, 2012
I upgraded my 27" iMac 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 duo from 4GB of ram (2x2GB) to 8GB of ram (2x4GB). I followed the instructions and removed the old ram, put in the new ram and after many restarts my computer finally came up. When it did finally come up I had the spinning wheel of death. When the screensaver came on, I heard my skype connect and I moved my mouse and wouldn't you know my computer was working! So to test to see if my computer would work again, I restarted. Same thing - came right up to spinning wheel - screen saver turned on after 30 minutes and again - Skype connected and no more spinning. Memory on Activity Monitor is looking great - but my computer is useless until the screen saver starts.
error code 4 mot /1/40000003: HDD having problem starting my imac pc takes about 20 times before i can turn it on.Getting a gray or white screen with error message turn off your computer by holding down the power button and restarting your pc computer running slow when it starts imac 2006 2 GB intel based snow leopard 10.6.8
Bought a new iMac in January, have a problem with the screen saver not coming on automatically after working okay for maybe three or four days. Have had about six calls and spent many hours with Apple techs. We get things working and then after a few days the hot corners won't hold, the screen saver won't come on automatically and the computer doesn't go to sleep as set up. If I manually put it to sleep it doesn't stay asleep for very long. Shutting down or a safe boot, will make it work right again.

My screensaver keeps turning on very quickly, even when I'm in the middle of using it. I can be typing a sentence in Word and it'll try to go to the screensaver. The screen will go black, but as soon as I type something it goes back to a regular screen. The preferences have the screensaver coming on after 15 minutes. I don't understand what's going on. The only thing I can think of is that I recently installed Air Display which is used to make my ipad an extra monitor, but turning the application off doesn't solve the problem. Also, there's nothing in the preferences for the application about screensavers.

The screensaver countdown does not seem to work correctly: if I set it to, say, 5 minutes, then after 5 minutes (irrespective of whether I'm using an attached mouse or keyboard, or the laptop keyboard/ trackpad), then the screensaver will start. Even when actually typing, the screensaver will still cut in for a brief moment before cancelling itself.Â
The only workaround is to turn the screensaver off.Â
This doesn't seem to be a Lion-specific issue - the problem started with Snow Leopard, and has continued now that I've upgraded to Lion.Â
i have with my Mac Pro. When i'm watching videos on youtube on full screen, the computer starts freezing and crashes. it happens almost all the time. and not just streaming, today the computer froze just during checking a website without any "moving" elements.Â
i bought the computer around april 2014, it is a 6-core MacPro with 16 GB RAM, two AMD FirePro D700 video cards.it runs on OSX 10.9.4.two displays are connected over thunderbolt.Â
The computer starts just fine, with the bong sound within seconds the computer shuts down. Is it a PSU problem? I need to be sure, before ordering a replacement. The computer is pretty old, G4 MDD.
I upgraded the RAM in my Macbook (late 2007) and the computer won't boot. I have power but no video display. I put the old RAM back in and it worked fine. I was careful to order the correct RAM: DDR2 PC2-5300 667 MHz. Is it possible the memory is bad?
My newest discovery is that when my computer freezes up what ever sound is playing makes a skipping noise and then I have to kill power to shut off what is the cause or how can I find out is there any log I can run or check to see the last action process that went on?
My MacBook Pro will not start. It chimes and the gray progress bar starts and then the computer shuts off. I am able to start it holding the Command +R keys and access Disk Utility. That is where it says my S.M.A.R.T. drive is "failing". I have a backup from Time Machine from a week ago. I am concerned the computer is going to die. What should I do and is my computer going to die?.

Whenever i plug the power cord into my mac book pro my computer never starts to charge? I have tryed this on various different outlets and have also tryed thsi with the two and three pronged adapters and it still is not working.Â
I've been cleaning my mac (files, etc.) with Cleangenius, then it stopped working. I turned off a computer. I turn it on, put my password, it starts loading and then restarts...
Starting abnormally, Like when I start my MacBook pro which is almost new. A bar runs on the white screen and then when it reached half way system shut down. Any way to reset my computer.Â
Also, when I am going to option, the system doesn't allow me by saying hard disk is locked.

I am trying to fix a friends macbook pro. When I turn it on the screen shows the apple and the spiral underneath it spinning like it should then when it stalls for .2 seconds it goes to a white screen then there is vertical purple lines in groups across the screen. So the screen is white/purple. Then it fades to just white and I cant do anything.
I hooked up my monitor with a DVI cable to see if it was the motherboard that was possibly bad but the monitor works just fine with the cable. I can use the computer with the laptop keyboard/mouse and it works just fine. The laptop screen just stays blank the whole time. I uploaded a vid to utube for it. If anybody has any ideas for me please help. I dont know if this is a monitor problem or the inverter or the motherboard, possibly some other piece of hardware? I've got limited hard drive space. In gmail, I keep my inbox pared down to just a few emails I'm actively working on (ie 3-10 emails at a time). Everything else gets archived. However, when I try to set up Mac Mail for gmail (as described on 50 different websites), my computer starts downloading thousands of emails - my sent mail, anything I've tagged, etc. I don't want all this. I just want the few active emails (my inbox) at any one time.
I've tried mapping folders in Mail (ie Use this folder for....), but can't seem to pare it down to just the inbox.
I was sat at my desk and the screensaver was on when i noticed that a string of text about arachnids appeared. As my screen saver theme is 'nature' I initially thought that was very clever of Apple.
I set the screensaver to a folder on main drive. All files are jpg. it works for a while then after a few times - exit the screensaver then back to the screensaver - it will go to the default settings.
Every few months, my iMac will start up from sleep mode on its own. Why does it do this, and is it something to be worried about? i am not touching the mouse or keyboard or using any remotely connected devices when this occurs.
My imac starts typing by itself it usually starts in safari and if I open any other program it will continue in that. It also continuously toggles rapidly between items in the lists of drop down menus. Other weird stuff happening too like if I put it to sleep and re-login it will delete any text I try to put in the password box.
I have a 2009 iMac that I have tried previously to upgrade to Lion. I remember that it was severly unsuccessful. I do not remember why.Â
Model Name: iMac Model Identifier: iMac11,1 Processor Name:Intel Core i7 Processor Speed: 2.8 GHz Number Of Processors:1 Total Number Of Cores:4 L2 Cache (per core):256 KB L3 Cache:  8 MB Memory:8 GB Processor Interconnect Speed:4.8 GT/s Boot ROM Version:IM111.0034.B02 SMC Version (system):1.54f36Â
I do remember that I tried both an upgrade and a fresh install, but both were unsuccessful. Problem is that there are games and software that are coming out now that are only compatible with 10.7. It is time to get up to date, but either I get an dupgrade working or I buy a new iMac. Buying one just for the upgrade, seems a little counter customer centric.
