Jun 28, 2012I've just added the macbook pros that were recently purchased, (NOT retina Displays) boo i know.. THey are in AD able to place them and moved them around into different groups. I'm able to sign in when i'm on the network. WHEN I'M OFF THE NETWORK IT DOES NOT ALLOW ME TO SIGN IN. In windows it builds a profile for you so i checked that it does create a profile folder under users but still not able to sign in (locally)? not really locally?

OS X :: Cannot Send Messages - Selected Server Offline
Feb 18, 2008Just got my first Mac on friday, I'm loving finding out how to do everything, but one thing has become extremely frustrating. I can't send my email! I have no trouble receiving it, and I've read everything I can get my hands on and all my settings seem to be correct. I've tried port 25, port 587, tried using smtp.mac, mail.mac, (my ISP) tried with SSL and without, everything I could change I've changed. My username and password and all account information must be correct since I'm able to receive mail, it's just the sending that's the problem. I'm using a dot mac email account if that makes any difference.
One thing that concerns me is that under mail preferences, accounts, and account information, next to "outgoing mail server (SMTP)" it says "(offline)" next to the selected server. Here is the exact message I'm getting, and no matter how I change it the message stays the same. "Cannot send message using the server (null). This message could not be delivered because your SMTP settings are not set. please use the account preferences panel to set the SMTP options for your account. Select a different outgoing mail server from the list below or click try later to leave the message in your outbox until it can be delivered."

The clients can conect to it (win).I would lice to have some Mac clients and will setuped Lion server an in Open Directory I have set to connect to another server. Then in Directory Utility I will set the connection to AD Server over Connect in File menu and I have only error mesage "Can't connect to the server - Directory Services may not be installed on the remote server, they may be turned off, or the URL may have been entered incorrectly." and then I try the connection over Services - Active Directory and have error mesage "Authentication server could not be contacted." too.

May 18, 2012I'm on a Mac Pro connected via SMB to a Windows 2003 and Finder will not search files on the server. Is there anyway to make this allowable? I can't change anything on the server BTW--only on my Mac.
Just for interest... Adobe Bridge will search the files on the server, but it doesn't catch them all even if I direct it to include subfolders and un-indexed files. It still misses some files that meet the search criteria.

OS X Yosemite :: Unable To View Files On Windows Server
Dec 3, 2014I recently became unable to view files on the PC at work. I used to be able to see the computer in the Finder as long as I was connected to the wifi. I can still my coworker's mac, which has not been upgraded to Yosemite. Additionally, his mac can see the PC in his Finder. Also, when I load windows on my mac, I can access the PC. I think this is related to other issues posted here, but nothing seems to to these specifics.

Intel Mac :: Unable To Open Leopard Files On Windows Server?
Mar 14, 2012We had a mac which was on Leopard and saved files to the serverÂ
The file system we use is a Windows 2008 File Server, this has worked fine with leopard for years
However I understand that Leopard splits the files into resource forks - and that Lion has dropped support for these files. That particular mac is now on Lion as we upgraded and encountering LOTS of issuesÂ
I unable to open or edit lots of the files as i believe chunks of the files are missing. E.g an .eps file showed as 740KB on leopard - Viewing from a windows PC it was 730kb for the .eps and 10kb for the ._ resource fork.Â
Now that we are on the LION upgrade, we only see the .eps file and it is only 730kb. Information missing is things such as preview (quark), Font data, type of file, version number. we have hundreds! of images, files etc created with leopard and now upgraded to lion they all have become useless!
Rejoining the resource forks and files together so that they are usable on lion

Apr 15, 2009I'm the Network Admin for my company and our Marketing Director just got a new MB Pro. I've used directory services and he can sign in and authenticate with his Windows AD credentials with no issue as well as access all resources. Problem is he travels a lot and needs to be able to login off of our internal network. Windows will cache login creds for offline logins. Is there a way to allow this in OS X also?

Mar 27, 2012I'm using mac os x server as SMB file sharing server and i got some issues with permissions.Â
I try to use POSIX permissions. I put :
owner -> read & write
group -> read & write
other -> read onlyÂ
And after propagate these permissions it's working fine.
Until an user create a folder or a file and i see that the permissions of it are :
owner -> read & write
group -> read only
other -> read onlyÂ
I have set default permissions on new files and folder for this sharepoint with the great permissions for the group. But it didn't work..Someone have a solution ?

Windows On Mac :: AEBS Bonjour Printer Not Printing - Appears Offline
Nov 18, 2009I have a Canon MX310 hooked up via a USB hub (shared with a HD) to an gigabit AEBS. Everything works fine under Leopard but no Windows boxes (either bootcamp or otherwise) can see the printer as being online. I have the latest Bonjour and even tried manually installing the printer. I checked the port/IP and everything is as it should be. Airport Utility says that printer is being shared over Bonjour and the Bonjour Print Wizard has no problem finding the printer for me to set up but the printer appears offline and won't print. I have rebooted the AEBS. All boxes are running Windows 7.

May 3, 2012I just bought a Mac Mini that came with Lion installed. I couldn't transfer my files over from my old G4 because the video card died in that Mac, so I put the hard drive into an external USB case and did the transfer of my old settings that way using Migration Assistant. All my settings seems to have moved fine and I manually moved my web files to Library/WebServer/ Documents folder, but when I turn on Web Sharing none of my files show up on the server although they are all in the Library/WebServer/ Documents folder and Web Sharing is turned on Sharing Preferences. All I get when I access the IP is "It Works".

May 8, 2012I'm usuing a new mac mini with lion server as a file sharing server (smb) with multiple machines with both W7 and XP. My problem is accessing SolidWorks files from the PC. I can drag the files to the desktop and then they will open but if I try to open them from SolidWorks it doesn't work. It looks like other are having this problem with SolidWorks and office. It also looks like in the last update (10.7.3) they might have fixed the issues with office but I can't find anything about SolidWorks issues being solved. I didn't have this problem before when I was using an older mini server with snow leopard but ever since I have made the switch to a new machine with lion server I've had this problem.

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Altering Files On Network Profiles?
May 11, 2012I have set up a server with several network profiles. When logged into a network profile the user has no problem creating and saving a file of any kind, as soon as you edit and try and resave one of these files (only those of utilize Versions) does it give you an error "The file cannot be saved." at which point it reverts back to the origional file or offers to save it under a new name. Through trouble shooting I've discovered it only happens when trying to resave files that use versions, and only happens when im accessing these accounts through the network profile (in other words if i loggin and screen share to the account everything works fine), which in tern suggests the problem is occuring in the disconect between the home folder(which is all the network profile accesses) and the applications.

Mar 12, 2012Is is possible to share files to the desktop of a mini-server running Lion? I've done this for years with other operating systems with no trouble ... and when I drag files to other locations on the mini-server it works fine.
But when I try to drag a file to the desktop of the mini-server, I get asked for a password. I type in the password; it gets accepted. Then I get a dialog: "A newer version of do you want to replace...?" When I click "yes," I get another dialog:

Mac OS X Lion Server :: Windows Users Cannot Connect To SMB Service
Feb 23, 2012I have two Lion 10.7.3 servers joined to my company's AD. These servers provide SMB/AFP file services to users. They have been working successfully until a week ago when a change in AD was made. Now Windows (7 or XP, doesn't matter) clients cannot connect to the server using the DNS name, only the IP address. Mac OS X clients are not affected by this, i.e. they can use the DNS name fine. All clients are on AD too. What I observe from a Windows 7 client is, I open Windows Explorer, type \xserver in the address bar, hit enter, & it denies my connection immediately. If I do the same thing with the IP address (\10.0.1.10), it lets me in immediately.
For Windows clients, I have tried both the short DNS name as well as the FQDN, & neither work. The DNS name on the server itself is fine, verified by "changeip -checkhostname". Whatever changed in AD caused the Lion servers to start doing this because they both started exhibiting this behavior at the same time. The only info I've been able to get regarding what changed in AD from the domain admins was "We changed the UPN fromuser@domain.example.com to Firstname.Lastname@example.com", in other words, to their email address. In the system logs, here's an attempt to connect from a Windows client using the short DNS name:

OS X V10.7 Lion :: Macbook Changes Inherited Permission On Windows Server
Apr 11, 2012Im using a Mac Book Pro (Mac OS X Lion 10.7.3 11D50b) with Microsoft Office 2011. Â
I make an SMB connection to my Windows 2008 File Server using the "Connect to Server" function in finder. I am then prompted to login to the server and I use my active directory username and password. Once logged in I open a Microsoft Word Doc from the windows server by double clicking on the doc in finder. I edit the doc in Word 2011 for mac and then click save. Â
Once the doc has been saved, some (not all) of the inherited permissions on the doc have disappeared. This means that other users on my network cannot open the doc as they get a permission denied error.
I have tested this several times and it is very repeatable. Have been working in this environment for several months with no issues to date, this seems to be a new issue. Â

Jun 3, 2012I am having issues commecting my late 2011 model MacBook Pro to a Windows 2003 server on my internal network using the AFP protocall. I am able to connect to the server using SMB however. I have a am running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 operating system and the server can be found and pinged but when I try and connect to it using AFP I get the error: There was a problem connecting to the server "<my server ip address here>" The server may not exist or is unavailable at this time. Check the server name or IP address, check your network connection and then try again.Â
On this network my roomate also has a late 2011 model MacBook Pro which is able to connect to the server no problem using both protocalls. He has completely disconnected his computer from the server to double check there was not at overload of traffic on the afp. The only difference in his machine vs mine is that he is running Mac OS X 10.7.2 which is pretty close in versioning.Â
