Laptops :: New MacBook Pro 13 Vs. Older MacBook 13?
Jun 12, 2009
My dear old PowerBook Firewire model is showing its age badlythough if I thought it could be fixed for a reasonable amount (and competently), I might put some money into it. I'd have to replace the CD/DVD drive and the battery (and maybe even the soldered-in battery that keeps the time, etc.), and some of the keys on the right side don't respond to the Shift. The rest of it works just fine.
That is just to show you what I am like: I keep my computers for a long, long time. Also, because I have a working G4 desktop, I don't use the laptop a lot.
1. That said, I have been considering getting a new laptop, and when the desktop fails, that (and an external monitor and maybe a keyboard) will be my main computer. I like a lot of what the new MacBook Pro 13-inch offers, but I'm put off by the fact that the battery cannot be replaced. Or can it? That is at the heart of the matter: Is it just that I would not be able to replace it myself, or that I couldn't even get it replaced by clever techs? That is, is the computer done for, once the battery goes dead?
Also, I wondered about the battery in relation to the question of someone like me, who tended to use the computer with the AC adaptor, not detached from a power supply. In such a situation, the length of battery time is irrelevant, but the replaceability of the battery is not. I might even remove the battery at such times.
So, although I really like the return of Firewire, and the SD card is nice, I don't absolutely need those things. Would I do better to get the MacBook 13 (the generation before the Pro13)? Would that ensure that I could keep my computer as long as everything else besides the battery works?
2. Perhaps a silly question but one that I think is relevant. I see that neither MacBook has an internal modem. Does that mean that when my broadband connection goes down (it does that, though very rarely), I cannot use the few hours a month of dialup that my ISP provides for such situations?
Of course, since I don't need a laptop at the present moment, I suppose I could wait until either my desktop breaks down and can't be repaired or Apple comes across with a MacBook model with a removeable battery (if that really is a great plus). For me a laptop would be an occasional convenience, not a necessity. Still, if I should want to get the earlier model (spiffed up with the maximum HD and RAM), I think I must hustle. It may not be available for long.

Is there any reason NOT to use the powerbrick from my earlier MacBook Pro with the new one? I know the new brick is bigger and more powerful (85W) but will anything go wrong if I use the old one when I plug in at my office?
How about a 60W brick for an old MacBook?

While I would love to buy the latest and greatest macbook pro, I simply cant justify spending that kind of money that apple is asking for on system. Made that mistake once on a new 17" 1.67ghz and lost 40% only after a year.So I am considering an older second hand macbook pro, which I think would do me fine, so the question is which 15"/17" is better for pholo editing. I dont even mind going pre unibody too (but I do like to the 2 finger scrolling)In addition I was thinking about getting into Aperture 3 but it seems a little power intensive so are there any alternative photo editing application that is more resourceful so I dont need the state of the art system to run on?

I have a quick question, maybe a softball for the experts here.
I'm prepping my wife's older Macbook (white, 2006) for sale on eBay, as I have recently replaced it with the newest model. I'm going to wipe the computer and re-install OSX.
My question is this: Can I use the OSX Snow Leopard disc from her new Macbook to wipe/reinstall on her old one, thus having Snow Leopard installed instead of Tiger?

I have a new 2.53 Macbook Pro coming in the mail this week and I want to swap my current 7200rpm drive from a Second Generation 2.16 Core Duo Macbook Pro into my new computer. My question is this:
Would it be a better idea to erase the drive before swapping it to the new Unibody MBP, or can I just throw it in and run off the current OS installed on it (10.5.7). The OS should be the same on the new computer since its the same most current version of Leopard. I dont really know if this is possible since its an entirely different computer.

I'm looking at getting a Thunderbolt HD for backup (Time Machine).I have a MBP (early 2011), which has a TB port, but my other machine is a MacBook from 2007, which has USB2.0 and FW400 ports. I don't want to use different HDs for the backups, so can I use an adaptor to connect the the 2007 machine via either USB2.0 or FW400?

I purchased a Macbook Air 11-inch in March. I previously had owned a first-generation MacBook Pro 15-inch, and was just curious as to whether it is safe to use the charger from my Macbook Pro 15-inch to charge my new Macbook Air.
The following is what appear on the chargers:
Macbook Pro (First generation): Apply 85W Portable Power Adapter
Macbook Air (Latest model): Apple 45W MagSafe Power Adapter
Is the older charger safe to use and will it not damage the battery on my new Macbook Air?

I recently went out and got myself the 2Ghz macbook w/o the backlit keyboard. I suddenly realized how often i had used the backlit keyboard on my macbook pro 17" that i sold. I got the computer on April 8th and am still under the 14 day return period and was wondering if you guys thought that i could go to apple and return this model for the 2.4ghz model (extra $300)... and if it was worth it....

Now that Apple has released Macs capable of putting out audio over HDMI (via Mini-Displayport) I was wondering if there is a hack to do this on older MacBooks. Certainly this is software based.
I remember a little pref pane that allowed two-finger scrolling on iBooks--hoping the same type of thing exists for audio over HDMI.

i have just started my phd and am looking for a portable laptop. my requirements are pretty basic - lots of word processing, music, movies, and of course internet. maybe some photo editing. now first, i am a little mixed up if i should go for the macbook pro (basic 13 inch) or the newly launched macbook air (13 inch basic). pro is more powerful and cheaper than air. but then air is lighter and also has the faster flash memory! on the other hand, i am tempted to go for an SSD option with the pro. the price goes up of course by 315 $ or so. but in a way then the system could last me for a very long time given that the new polymer batteries last 3 times than normal ones. and its really the batteries/HDD that get worn out first.
on the other hand i am a little wary of SSD technology. it seems that the old HDD's are not that bad, and have some advantages over the SSD's. an internet search reveals that the 1st generation SSD's had a lot of problems. so does apple now use 1st generation ones or newer ones? moreover, is the SSD option more reliable or the flash drive one (with air)? basically am ready to invest a big amount provided i am assured that the system will last me for a long time to come.

I've heard that there have been some differences between the older and newer Macbook screens - I'm thinking about buying a reburb unibody macbook and want to know how significant the difference is. If it's big enough I'll use my student discount to get a new mac with an iPod and then sell the iPod for the price difference, but that is a lot more work and initial money spent vs just getting a refurb. Does anyone have any experience with both?

I'm trying to hook a MacBook Pro to an older Sony TV that has an s-video or composite video port available. I prefer the s-video because the quality will be better while playing movies. On my older MacBook Pro I use a DVI to Video adapter that apple produces. With the new MacBook Pro's apple doesn't make a mini displayport to video adapter. What do you recommend I do?

I have a 23" cinema display from November of 2006. Is this compatible with my newer MacBook Pro, which is from June 2009. It's not the most recent MBP - I bought it just before they refreshed the line a week or two later. If the display will work, which adapter do I need? Micro DVI? Mini DisplayPort?

I purchased a 500GB time capsule awhile back in hopes of killing two birds with one stone. I wanted it to:1) serve as my wifi base (which it is doing very nicely)and 2) Allow me to backup all my files on my macbook in order to free up some memory.I guess my question really is, once I've backed up all my content to the time machine (acting as an extra hard drive), is it safe to just delete the content from my macbook that I am ok with not accessing when away from my time capsule? For example, all that music I still want to keep but dont necessarily listen to on a regular basis? I am completely full on my macbook and need extra room. I dont anticipate filling the time capsule anytime soon.
