MacBook :: Freeing Up Memory On An Older System With Time Capsule?
Aug 17, 2010
I purchased a 500GB time capsule awhile back in hopes of killing two birds with one stone. I wanted it to:1) serve as my wifi base (which it is doing very nicely)and 2) Allow me to backup all my files on my macbook in order to free up some memory.I guess my question really is, once I've backed up all my content to the time machine (acting as an extra hard drive), is it safe to just delete the content from my macbook that I am ok with not accessing when away from my time capsule? For example, all that music I still want to keep but dont necessarily listen to on a regular basis? I am completely full on my macbook and need extra room. I dont anticipate filling the time capsule anytime soon.

I am the Principal of a school and because of budget cuts - scary piece ahead - also the tech coordinator. I have a few older eMacs, some with airport cards and some without. My question/problem: I want to hook an eMac 10.4.11 directly into the Time Capsule to access the internet (the time capsule is acting as an extension of our wireless network). I have done this before successfully using an airport extreme, however, I am not successful to date in doing this with time capsule. It has been a while since I set up a computer this way. My question is am I missing a trick (using ethernet cord into LAN port), or is it not possible.

I basically know someone that is selling the 500GB Time Capsule which has Dual Band Wi-Fi etc, this is the link for it on the Apple refurb website
http://store.apple.com/uk/product/FB764B/A
All I want to know is, apart from the obvious 1 or 2TB of space available in the new versions is there any other differences? Both are 802.11n and are dual band. What I have noticed thought is that there are refinements which allow it to be backed up 75% faster than the previous generation and it says there is a 50% better performance over Wifi with 25% greater range?
How is this possible if they are both 802.11n? Also Is this true even when connecting via Ethernet? In terms of when I backup over Ethernet will it be 75% more faster? It'll be on my desk so I don't really care about the wireless capabilities. Lastly, will it work with my network, please click on this link as it explains my setup.
http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=853136
So just to reiterate, will I notice a difference in back up speeds when connected via Ethernet between the two versions. I'm getting it quite cheap, for about $50 Brand New sealed.

I have a June09 MBP with the 160GB hard drive. I want to get a Mac Mini and a 500GB HDD for the MBP. What I want to do is swap the 160GB HDD currently in the MBP into the Mini and then install the 500GB HDD into the MBP and do a backup via TimeMachine with Time Capsule. Would doing that cause any problems when the Mini/MBP backup to the TC?

i did a last minute backup before i sold my late 07 Mini last weak and I was a little apprehensive abouthow well the restore would work on the new 2.53 mini.
Well I can now say I am very impressed, i turned on the new Mini and it asked if i wanted to restore and gave me a few options. i chose the TC and it was off and running, it took about 2hrs. when it finished it was like i was still using the old Mini, a perfect image clone. all my email, pictures, docs, etc. were there just like i left them.
so for those who have never done a restore you have nothing to worry about (as long as your TC doesn't crap out first LOL)

I just got an external hard drive because I have thousands of songs that my macbook cannot hold.
I am using Time Machine to put everything on my external but I was wondering....if I delete the music on my computer so that I just have it on my external - will Time machine delete it off my external when it automatically updates since it is no longer on my computer?
I want to download more music but am scared of losing any old music.

I have a 2013 iMac on OS 10.9.5 with no problems. I will be receiving a new iMac w Retina Display on Yosemite, which I'll be backing up with a new, unused TC.
I want to copy and transfer files from older iMac to the new one using the TC, but right now I don't want upgrade to Yosemite on the older iMac.
Can I manually select files from the older iMac to copy to the TC, and what files must I leave out so that there aren't any problems that transferring files from an older OS to a newer one won't arise?

I am planning on purchasing a mac mini solely for the purpose of playing music - it will be hooked up to a hi-fi amplifier and speakers. All of the music that will be on the computer will be in lossless format, which is very large. I will need a lot (320+ GB?) of storage.
I'm wondering if I can cut costs by buying an old 80 GB mini and augmenting its hard drive with a time capsule. I was planning on buying a time capsule anyway, so I could save something like $300. My questions are: would I be able to stream music from the time capsule to the mac mini? Would I be able to import music from itunes directly onto the time capsule? If I hook the mini up to the time capsule via USB, can it serve as a hard-drive, even if my internet is down? Is it going to be much more worth my time to buck up and buy a new 320 GB mini?

My MacBook Pro locks up and shows the message "Please reboot your computer by holding down the power button" every time that Time Machine tries to run a backup. I turned off Time Machine and no more crashes... Sorta makes my 500 Gig Time Capsule useless.

We have a small ethernet network and need to bring files from projects done on older macs running OS9 into new macs running OSX. All machines can "see" the printers, and other machines running same OS, but we haven't been able to get them to talk to computers that are on different OS. The older machines are different laptops running the latest software they are capable of running - OS9.The newer machines are laptops and desktops running Tiger and Leopard.
Is there any way to get them to talk to one another? Saving to floppies or zipdrives and then burning to cds would be very tedious.

I'm using an Intel iMac running OS 10.4.11. Obviously the computer is a few years old now and I'm wondering whether it is worth upgrading the system software or time to get a new computer. Can you guys venture any opinions as to which version of OS X I might be able to upgrade to with decent performance? I'd rather not add any memory if that's a requirement for upgrading - in that case I'd probably just opt for a new computer.

I recently did a Time Machine complete system restore and I noticed that the contents of some of the storage folders in Apple Mail were empty. Interestingly, folders that have been accessed in the last few months were completely restored, but some much older files that have not been accessed in a considerable amount of time were totally empty. I'm not sure why that occurred, but is there a way to find and restore the contests of those older folders?

I'm trying to get older backups off my Time Machine hard drive but when using the Migration Assistant I only have the option to transfer the "latest backup" to my new iMac. And when I try to drag and drop the iMovie library (which is the only set of files I really want) iMovie on my iMac states I cannot open the library for either permission reasons (the first time I tried it) or because the file does not exist.

Something went wrong during a recent update and time machine fathefully backed up the corrupted data.
Needed to repartition the drive and reinstall OSX 10.9.4 and restore from the Time Machine back-up.
How do I restore a Mac from a older back-up before the error occured?
Open the back-up folder and delete the most recent backups ?
