I'm trying to hook a MacBook Pro to an older Sony TV that has an s-video or composite video port available. I prefer the s-video because the quality will be better while playing movies. On my older MacBook Pro I use a DVI to Video adapter that apple produces. With the new MacBook Pro's apple doesn't make a mini displayport to video adapter. What do you recommend I do?

Now that Apple has released Macs capable of putting out audio over HDMI (via Mini-Displayport) I was wondering if there is a hack to do this on older MacBooks. Certainly this is software based.
I remember a little pref pane that allowed two-finger scrolling on iBooks--hoping the same type of thing exists for audio over HDMI.
I've got a big CRT TV that I'd like to connect my new MacBook Pro to occasionally in order to play videos. So what's the easiest/best/cheapest way to do this? Mini Display to DVI to ??? ? Something else? I don't expect much in the way of quality, but it would be nice if it weren't terrible.
View 5 Replies View RelatedRelevant newbie to the mac world. I have a MBP late 2009. I bought a third party Mini display port to HDMI converter so I can hook the MBP to my 46" Samsung screen.
This works fine, no major issues here. However the picture is not great. I compared watching a standard definition TV show through the MBP then burnt it onto a DVD. The DVD (using the PS3 as my DVD drive, connected via HDMI) had superior quality than through the MBP.
Also the picture does not quite fill the screen. There is a small black border running all the way around the screen. Does not sound significant but when doing the same comparison as above, you notice the difference when via DVD the movie fills the screen. I have played around with the resolution settings. Those that fill the screen chop bits of the mac desktop off, so thats no good either.
So I am wondering why this is? Is it because the mini display port is not a DVI port, hence I am not getting true HD quality picture? How can I overcome this if at all. I'm thinking of getting a mac mini as a media hub/HTPC but want to ensure I dont encounter the same problems.
How many of you would like to see a HDMI Port? Why the miniDisplay port? Why not remove ethernet jack and miniDisplay port and replace it with a HDMI port. That way one HDMI cable feeds digital video AND audio. Am I the only one thinking of this?
View 22 Replies View RelatedFor anyone wanting to use their Mini Display port connector on their 4870 with a panel that has the standard size display port connector, I've found a source for a cable that works perfectly. It has the mini display port on one end and a full size display port on the other. Cost $19 bucks shipped and works like a champ. The cable is nice and compact, thinner and more flexible than my DVI cable. I'm quite pleased! ( it's the little things.... )

I have a Macbook Unibody (late 08) with the mini displayport. I want to hook it up to my Sony Bravia (KDL-40V3000). Since the HDMI ports are all used up, the only ports available are the VGA, and Component.
My questions are pretty basic:
What is my best option to hook it up, giving me the highest resolution (the TV says it does 1920 x 1080). Will both VGA and Component do that?
Also, I do already have the mini displayport to DVI adapter for another monitor I use, so I could get a DVI->VGA adapter I think. But if that's going to degrade the video, or whatnot, I don't mind getting a different adapter for this project.
I have a mid-late 2008 MacBook connected to a Dell U2211H monitor using a Mini DisplayPort -> VGA connection.
When I use 1920x1080, I only get 60 Hz and the display is a fuzzy (text). Also, there are black bars. Why?
Will my issues be solved using a Mini DisplayPort -> DVI connection? Or should I exchange it for the 2209?
I use MBP (late 2011). I find the hunderbolt port to be similar to the mini-display port of older mac. I wish to have another display, but not ready to spend $999 over a thunderbolt display from mac. First of, the only reason I am considering to buy a 17-inch MacBook Pro is to be able to watch HDTV and HD Movies, I realized that with the "HDMI output using Mini DisplayPort to HDMI Adapter (optional)", it could be possible to just use my current 23" 1080p LCD flatpanel.
I need to connect my 09' Mac Mini to my Yamaha RX-V2700 receiver which outputs to my Sony XBR HDTV. I know the mini has both mini-dvi to dvi and mini-dp to dvi or hdmi available via adapters. I was thinking to go with option 1 however I was wondering what is your opinions? Is mini-display port better over mini-dvi or are they the same? Audio will be carried over optical toslink.

Using mini-dvi adapter to dvi: Connect Dvi-Hdmi cable to receiver and output audio with toslink adapter.
Option 2:

I just got in the mail the new MDP to HDMI and i plug it in to my macbook then to my 32" Samsung 720p TV and In mirrored mode it doesnt display the full Screen thats on my macbook it cuts off an edge all around so i cant see the menu bar up top barely see the dock i tried different resolutions and still doesnt help... Anyone have any Idea why this happens? And also whats a good audio Cable so i can output the audio from my macbook to my TV?

The Dell monitor arrived with some interesting looking cables that look like they might be displayport - but the mbp looks much smaller (mini). Recently I have noticed that I cannot get any sound from my mini display port when conencted to a TV. It did used to work. I get a perfect picture everytime but no sound. I've tested the mini-display port to HDMI cable on another mac and it works fine. I've bought another Moshi mini display port to HDMI connector and that also does not work. I tried this on 3 TV's and its all the same, picture but no sound. The HDMI option does not appear under system prefs, sound & output. The only options are internal speakers and soundflower 2ch & 16ch. I've tried uninstalling airfoil and still the same. I can't recall when it stopped working. I did attempt to install OS Lion but it crashed my mail so I restored to 10.6 through time machine.
17" MBP. 2.8 intel . 8 GB ram. 256 GB crucial flash drive. OS X 10.6.8. Think it is 2010 model.

I'm getting a high resolution, and it looks alright, but it's not fully using the widescreen. That's "aspect" right? Well anyway, I also have a 19" display and it works perfectly. My Xbox, cable box and movies all use the full widescreen on the Acer, but the Macbook with the super amazing Mini DisplayPort doesn't even use the full resolution. What's with that? I thought the reason they had this new port and a $30 adapter was for higher resolutions!

i have a 15 inch apple studio display which has ADC (was partnered with the cube) and I purchased a DVI adaptor so it now works fine with the DVI port on the macbook pro. I am considering a new mac notebook (not sure which yet) but as these have the new mini display port, is there an adaptor that would slot into the DVI end of my current one, so it would work with the new macbook?
