Intel Mac :: Keyboard Suddenly Flips To Symbols Intermittently?

Jun 22, 2012

my keyboard has suddenly started to flip to some kind of symbols font intermittently - I've tried another keyboard, and the same thing happens. (I'm typing this on another computer)  I've tried opening various system preferences, and choosing default settings wherever possible. Sometimes it flips back and forth rapidly between the weird symbols and english... almost like there's a short circuit or something. My Wacom tablet works fine...

Intel Mac :: USB Keyboard: Letter Keys Typing Symbols Delete Key Not Working?

May 5, 2012

My two-year-old daughter was messing with the keyboard on my iMac, and now the keys on the keyboard are not functioning as they were before. The delete key doesn't work, "a" types a symbol-topped "a" followed by the copyright symbol, etc...

I've restores the factory settings to the function keys in system preferences, but the problem persists.

Intel Mac :: Keyboard Is Suddenly Ignored For One User

Mar 18, 2012

I was working on Lion, heard a weird noise from the system and since then I cannot use my keyboard anymore.

The same keyboard works on my Mac when I log out and it works on any other profile, but when I go back to my default user all inputs are ignored. (No reboot or anything works as it's a user specific problem).

I guess I activated something weird, but what and how do I decativate it?

OS X :: Find Keyboard Symbols And Characters?

Feb 25, 2009

MacBook Pro :: Scandinavian Keyboard - No Symbols

May 13, 2010

I just got my first MBP , 15inch AG, on Tuesday. Nice enough machine, getting used to the idiosyncrasies of OS X (like the useless Finder), but fair enough. There is one complete mess up on Apples part though: There are no | [ ] { } symbols on the keyboard. I have to use Google to find out how to type on a keyboard that's frigging in front of me! Ok, there's no PgDn and Home keys either, which is annoying (was the shortcut Fn + Arrow, Ctrl + Arrow, alt + Arrow or cmd + Arrow ?!? - I though Macs were supposed to be easy to use) I really wish Apple would fix this - until then I guess I@ll have Letraset it. and the @ and ' are swapped compared to most laptops

MacBook Pro :: Won't Type / Keyboard Changes To Symbols

Jul 26, 2010

When I try to type my password and hit enter/return I get an alert sound then nothing. Nothing about wrong password. Even more rare all of a sudden all I can type are symbols so I'm assuming this is what happens when I try to type my password to wake from sleep. I have to do a hard reboot before I can type in my password. I've re-installed Snow Leopard and updates. Tried deleting some preferences.

It's still happening. Anybody got any ideas? I've searching for similar problems. Can't even find a command that changes the entire keyboard layout to symbols only. I'm running 10.6.4 on a Macbook Pro.

MacBook Pro :: Keyboard Intermittently Stops Typing?

Jun 4, 2014

I have a MacbookPro - it's just over a year old. I mostly use it for graphics, but lately I've been having trouble with the keyboard - it intermittently stops typing. This problem occurs across all programs in which I use the keyboard. If I leave it alone for a few minutes it will start typing again, but obviously this is very inconvenient.

OS X :: Assign Keyboard Shortcuts To Symbols In Pages 09

Jan 2, 2010

I'm trying to do some math/biology study notes for school in pages, but I can't seem to figure out how to assign keyboard shortcuts to symbols. I could easily do it MS Office 08, where I would assign such keystrokes as Alt + Right for the "⇒" symbol but in pages it's not that simple. Right now, I essentially have to goto edit/special characters and insert each symbol in manually when I need it (Which is obviously time consuming for no reason)

MacBook Pro :: It Resumes From Sleep But Keyboard Types Symbols As Opposed To Correct Letters?

Feb 5, 2012

Having been a mac owner for a few years now, I guess it actually shows the quality of the product that this is the first time I've had to post on this site.I've recently upgraded from my 2008 model MacBook to an early 2011 model MacBook Pro 17" with Lion. This machine was brand new when I purchased it, and is a very lovely bit of kit.

The problem comes from the sleep functionality. Approximately one time of three, when I resume from sleep, the keyboard will be malfunctioning. What I mean by this is that when I type letters, they come out as symbols instead. I haven't been sharp enough to get a direct mapping of A-Z yet (I will do next time), but these aren't the 'ALT' key symbols, they're more like this (which is what I typed into Notepad last time this happened)In order to resolve this, I need to restart the computer, which, thus far, has resolved the issue every time. That said, it's a bit of a pain, so would like to know what's going on and if there is any way to prevent it.

All the software on the mac is up to date at time of writing, there have been no expansions to the machine (yet), so it's exactly as shipped. It's the 2.2GHz i7 Quad Core device, and is the first one supporting the thunderbolt graphics connector. Could it be a hardware problem (if so, I want to return it asap to get it sorted).

Intel Mac :: Going To Sleep Intermittently While In Use?

Feb 11, 2012

Found this issue on many forums, but unfortunately I cannot find a solution.  Taking to an apple store for repair is not an option.  If I'm going to spend $300-$400 for repair, I might as well purchase a new PC.  I am not that attached to this mac, and now with operating issues, I'm even less so.  At least with a PC I can ctrl+alt-del and start all over.  I was expecting more than 4 years out of a $1200 imac, so if I have to replace repair every few years, I'm thinking I'd rather start with a clean slate for $400 every few years with a new PC.  Very frustrated not being able to find a solution online about this problem, seeing that it seems so common.

While working on imac and surfing the net, my screen will intermittently go to sleep.  I can wiggle the mouse and click it and it will come back on right where I left off, internet connection and all. Once it happens, it continues to happen until I shut down and walk away for a good length of time (overnight).  Problem seems to happen when the imac has been running for many hours at a time.  I have set up the activity monitor, but I don't know what the numbers mean or what to look for.

This initially started happening this past summer, and I thought it was a heat issue, but now that it's happening mid-winter, not so sure.  Also, in the summer this seemed to be prompted by streaming online, but now it is just from surfing.  Not sure if it would shut down if I was working in Pages or Numbers, as I do so infrequently.  Doesn't matter if it's Safari or Firefox and it's not a hot corners/sleep issue.  Also noticed my fan runs loud sometimes, but not always.  Not sure if it's a related problem.  Does not sleep because of fan, no consistency in shutting down, etc.

OS X Mavericks :: Dock Flips Between Screens

Jun 27, 2014

I operate with two screens (MacBook Pro) and generally want the dock at the base of my larger plug-in screen.  This works fine except that occasionally, just with mouse movement, it will flip to the base of the smaller machine screen.  It can be put back by opening System Prefs/dock and selecting 'right' followed by 'bottom' - but still, it would be nice to know why this happens and if there is an easy way to stop it?

Mac Mini :: Intel Headphone Jack Fails Intermittently

Mar 26, 2007

My headphone jack fails intermittently. I have speakers hooked up to it and sometimes sound will not play through the speakers. Even if I disconnect the speakers and plug in headphone sound does still not play through the headphones. I have even tried restarting and that does not work. In my system preferences (In Sound Panel) it shows that something is connected to the headphone jack. I have already had the entire logic board replaced once (under warranty) and that seemed to fix the problem for a couple months. If I wait about a day or less magically the speakers start working again. This has happend twice. Has anyone else had this problem? I have about 2 weeks left on my warranty. It almost seems like it is a software problem now, but I am not sure.

OS X :: IMac Keyboard Suddenly Missing Keys

Sep 29, 2009

My Aluminium IMac keyboard has suddenly begun to miss keys, the E,P,D,C and both the back and spacebar keys are completely dead. I wasn't using it at the time but each key supposedly went one after each other in under thirty minutes, I've checked mouse keys and speech settings as well as removing keys to clean underneath but they weren't sticky to begin with. Sorry for the lack of detail using the onscreen keyboard takes quite a while to type coherently.

OS X :: MacBook Trackpad And Keyboard Stopped Working Suddenly

Feb 10, 2009

It seems that during my afternoon class, I shut down my macbook and then when I went to use it about 10 minutes later the keyboard nor the trackpad works. Now the keyboard/trackpad is not defective as it works via the OSX install cd and it works in Windows Vista (dual booted) When ever I start up OSX it just comes up and the mouse is in the upper left hand corner, and the keyboard doesn't work at all. I have tried a pram reset by pressing command + option + p + r and that did nothing. When I am in OSX the only way to get out is to hold down the power button till the macbook turns off. What else could be wrong is there anything I can do, the nearest Apple store is about 80 miles away so I am trying to avoid that at this point as it seems like a software issue.

MacBook Pro :: Keyboard Modifier Key Remap Suddenly Not Working?

Mar 29, 2012

I am using a MacBook Pro running OS X 10.6.8 (Snow Leopard). I use a third-party USB keyboard that is laid out (naturally) Windows-style, with the Alt keys inside (closer to the space bar than) the “Windows logo” keys. I use the Modifier Keys button in the Keyboard preference panel to remap these to the standard Mac configuration, with the Command keys on the inside and the Option keys on the outside.

Today those modifier keys are suddenly reversed back to the default Windows layout. The Keyboard panel still shows my preferred (remapped) configuration, but it is not being honored. I have tried reverting to the default layout and then back again, I have rebooted the system, nothing works—the modifier keys are still stuck in the Windows configuration. I rely heavily on keyboard macros in my work, most of which use the modifier keys, and those keystrokes are built into my fingers as second nature. The reversed modifier keys are driving me crazy. Please help: what can I do to make the keyboard honor my settings in the Keyboard preference panel?
