Dec 6, 2014I bought a MacBook Air yesterday but the keyboard displays the wrong symbols for the keys. The alphabet is ok, it is the other symbols.

MacBook Pro :: It Resumes From Sleep But Keyboard Types Symbols As Opposed To Correct Letters?
Feb 5, 2012Having been a mac owner for a few years now, I guess it actually shows the quality of the product that this is the first time I've had to post on this site.I've recently upgraded from my 2008 model MacBook to an early 2011 model MacBook Pro 17" with Lion. This machine was brand new when I purchased it, and is a very lovely bit of kit.
The problem comes from the sleep functionality. Approximately one time of three, when I resume from sleep, the keyboard will be malfunctioning. What I mean by this is that when I type letters, they come out as symbols instead. I haven't been sharp enough to get a direct mapping of A-Z yet (I will do next time), but these aren't the 'ALT' key symbols, they're more like this (which is what I typed into Notepad last time this happened)In order to resolve this, I need to restart the computer, which, thus far, has resolved the issue every time. That said, it's a bit of a pain, so would like to know what's going on and if there is any way to prevent it.
All the software on the mac is up to date at time of writing, there have been no expansions to the machine (yet), so it's exactly as shipped. It's the 2.2GHz i7 Quad Core device, and is the first one supporting the thunderbolt graphics connector. Could it be a hardware problem (if so, I want to return it asap to get it sorted).

I've restores the factory settings to the function keys in system preferences, but the problem persists.

Jan 7, 2011On my old windows PC, in word I used to be able to type symbols just as if I was typing letters. Not randomly, I custom assigned each symbol I used a lot to each letter. I type a lot of symbols in my scientific notes. If I clicked control shift: ABD where alpha beta delta, 1-9 was subscript 1-9 (for chemical formulas), and I had a load more. I used the so often I could touch type them just like any other letter.
I want to do the same thing on my mac, so I can type the symbols. I have noticed that the alt key does bring up the symbols, but they are very strange and not very useful. I dont need to type a "grave" symbol very often, but alpha all the time (but there is no alpha). And they aren't assigned to my logical letter (beta to B). How do I reassign the alt keys to my symbol, surely there is an easy way, but I have looked and not found one.

May 13, 2010I just got my first MBP , 15inch AG, on Tuesday. Nice enough machine, getting used to the idiosyncrasies of OS X (like the useless Finder), but fair enough. There is one complete mess up on Apple�s part though: There are no | [ ] { } symbols on the keyboard. I have to use Google to find out how to type on a keyboard that's frigging in front of me! Ok, there's no PgDn and Home keys either, which is annoying (was the shortcut Fn + Arrow, Ctrl + Arrow, alt + Arrow or cmd + Arrow ?!? - I though Macs were supposed to be easy to use) I really wish Apple would fix this - until then I guess I@ll have Letraset it. and the @ and ' are swapped compared to most laptops

Jul 26, 2010When I try to type my password and hit enter/return I get an alert sound then nothing. Nothing about wrong password. Even more rare all of a sudden all I can type are symbols so I'm assuming this is what happens when I try to type my password to wake from sleep. I have to do a hard reboot before I can type in my password. I've re-installed Snow Leopard and updates. Tried deleting some preferences.
It's still happening. Anybody got any ideas? I've searching for similar problems. Can't even find a command that changes the entire keyboard layout to symbols only. I'm running 10.6.4 on a Macbook Pro.

Jun 22, 2012my keyboard has suddenly started to flip to some kind of symbols font intermittently - I've tried another keyboard, and the same thing happens. (I'm typing this on another computer) I've tried opening various system preferences, and choosing default settings wherever possible. Sometimes it flips back and forth rapidly between the weird symbols and english... almost like there's a short circuit or something. My Wacom tablet works fine...

Aug 2, 2010So a few days ago I spilt tea on my MBP. When I opened it back up everything seemed to be in working condition, however a few of my keys were sticky. So, yesterday I took them off and started cleaning. That's when things went down hill.
Now, my keyboard will type two letters at the same time. For example, when I press "r" it will type "ry". It does this for the whole row. The Dashboard key brightens the screen and brings up the dashboard. 4 types 46. f types fh. v types vn. And space doesn't space.

Feb 21, 2012My cat slept on my MacBook last night and now the keyboard isn't working properly ... Some keys don't do anything at all and some keys do things they shouldn't... Any clues on how to fix this? I called the apple support line and we don't think it was anything to do with the settings in 'universal settings'. I'm not sure what else to do and this is one time I do wish I had a man in the house?! Or at least someone else who has half a clue! I rely haven't had many problems with my MacBook 'till now. I'm operating on Mac os x 10.6.8 Also, 2 cats free to good home. Or anyhome, it doesn't even need to be 'good'!

Mar 25, 2012I just recently got a white Macbook 2007 and after I installed snow leopard on it I realised that the I,K and LEFT,RIGHT,UP,DOWN keys were not working and so I installed leopard on it and still had the same problem I booted into safe mode on both but still no luck and this morning the Z key stop working I turned of mouses keys and that still did not work.
