MacBook :: Keyboard Won't Type Letters - Just Keys And Symbols

My 2009 MacBook keyboard won't type letters. just the number keys and symbols work...any advise?. Is this a setting issue. No physical damage. Also the track pad acts like only secondary click works. When I tap or click it activates "secondary" function

MacBook Pro :: Won't Type / Keyboard Changes To Symbols
When I try to type my password and hit enter/return I get an alert sound then nothing. Nothing about wrong password. Even more rare all of a sudden all I can type are symbols so I'm assuming this is what happens when I try to type my password to wake from sleep. I have to do a hard reboot before I can type in my password. I've re-installed Snow Leopard and updates. Tried deleting some preferences.

It's still happening. Anybody got any ideas? I've searching for similar problems. Can't even find a command that changes the entire keyboard layout to symbols only. I'm running 10.6.4 on a Macbook Pro.

Mac Mini :: 1.66 Won't Boot With Combo Keys Using PC Type USB Keyboard
I have Mac Mini 1.66 Intel 2006 OS X 10.4.11 with CD-R and DVD Player that won't boot properly into single user mode using a IBM PC keyboard. I have tried the alt-s, windows key-s and control-s key combinations. from the mac keyboard hints sheet located on this web site.

I have also tried to boot with key combinations from the mac mini manual with no success. I have also tried to simply insert the install CD/DVD for MAC OS X 10.4 that came with the computer and start the computer with various key combinations and the cd/dvd drive will not boot.

What do I need to do to be able to accomplish these tasks with the PC/ Windows keyboard.

MacBook Pro :: It Resumes From Sleep But Keyboard Types Symbols As Opposed To Correct Letters?
Having been a mac owner for a few years now, I guess it actually shows the quality of the product that this is the first time I've had to post on this site.I've recently upgraded from my 2008 model MacBook to an early 2011 model MacBook Pro 17" with Lion. This machine was brand new when I purchased it, and is a very lovely bit of kit.

The problem comes from the sleep functionality. Approximately one time of three, when I resume from sleep, the keyboard will be malfunctioning. What I mean by this is that when I type letters, they come out as symbols instead. I haven't been sharp enough to get a direct mapping of A-Z yet (I will do next time), but these aren't the 'ALT' key symbols, they're more like this (which is what I typed into Notepad last time this happened)In order to resolve this, I need to restart the computer, which, thus far, has resolved the issue every time. That said, it's a bit of a pain, so would like to know what's going on and if there is any way to prevent it.

All the software on the mac is up to date at time of writing, there have been no expansions to the machine (yet), so it's exactly as shipped. It's the 2.2GHz i7 Quad Core device, and is the first one supporting the thunderbolt graphics connector. Could it be a hardware problem (if so, I want to return it asap to get it sorted).

OS X Leopard :: Won't Type IPA Symbols In Mac OS X 10.5
I specifically have Microsoft Word for MacBook, but I guess this question could really apply to any word processing application on a MacBook...

I am a Linguistics student and I need to type symbols in the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) format. Would anybody know how to type such symbols?? I've looked through all the fonts in MS Word and none of them have the symbols I am looking for. Does anyone know if these symbols even automatically exist on the MacBook, or if they must be downloaded (and where)?

even if no one else has MS Word, even if you might know how to type these symbols in another word processor, I'd still be happy to know how you did this (maybe I might also have this same application as you do and not even know it because I'm so computer-illiterate!!

Snow Leopard :: Won't Type Mathematical Symbols / Can't Find Settings
Does anyone know any simple method of typing common mathematical symbols without having to using the laborious method of using the language and text menu in system preferences?

I am mainly interested in how to type squares and cubes as well as square roots and cube roots. After that, I would like to be able to type out complex ratios such as (a+b)(c-d) "divided by" x(y+z) instead of the right hand slash. ( in other words, it would look something like and underscore)

LaTeXIT found at Apple Downloads is worthless unless someone proves me wrong.

OS X :: Keyboard Won't Type Correctly?
I'm posting from my iPhone right now, as my problem isn't even letting me log in to my user. I'm using Mac version 10.5.8.

When I was on the computer, it had a spasm that came out of nowhere. When I would use the scroll wheel, the screen would zoom in and out, I was only able to right click, and various keys would bring up that dull tone if I pressed them. I restarted the computer, as it is the solutions to most problems, only to not be able to log in. The only way I could type anything is my holding the option key and typing letters, pressing the return key (the return key came as a character), or pressing q and typing. I have no idea what each thing does.

Numbers 09 :: Add Occurrences Of Letters And Symbols In A Row?
I am back at it, having failed to figure this out last June. My previous question is now archived.

First problem:

I am constructing a table (chart? spreadsheet?) in which some rows will contain checkboxes as well as letters, such as "A" or "B". At the end of such rows, I would like a total of all cells that contain either a checkmark or a letter. Each cell that is not empty will contain only a checkbox or a letter, never both.

I can't use COUNTA for this, because an unchecked checkbox is not considered empty (it is considered to have the value FALSE, which is not "empty", right? Or so my trial and error would indicate.)

I can't use COUNT, as it only counts values that are numeric, so the letters wouldn't be counted. I suppose I could use a "Y" (for "Yes") instead of checkboxes and checkmarks, but I'd rather not, as the checkboxes are convenient and convey my meaning better visually. Also, I will need mostly checkboxes and not "plain" cells, so I will start with all checkboxes and convert individual cells from checkboxes to regular cells as needed, and not the other way around.

Second problem (related to first):

I have other rows that will contain checkboxes in some cells and whole numbers in others. Some cells will be empty. At the end of these rows I would like to obtain the sum of the numbers and the checks, with each check counting as "1", of course. It seems I would need to use SUM for this. In both examples, wouldn't I need to use a nested formula, with some sort of COUNT inside, surrounded by a SUM? Subtotals of each type (checkmarks, letters, numbers) for each row would be nice, but I will settle for just totals (as described above) if I can get them. I have read extensively from both the Numbers Users Guide and the Formulas & Functions Users Guide and believe I have reached the limits of my boggled mind, at least for now. When the software can do square roots, logarithms, and such, this seems like such a simple thing and yet it eludes me.

Hardware :: Bluetooth Keyboard Won't Type SHIFT + U ... Just Started
So about 3 weeks ago I spilled some pop on my keyboard. I let it dry and then gently ran a cloth over the keyboard that was damp with rubbing alcohol. The alcohol dried up and it works fine. 2 weeks later I am downloading some "files" and I go to type SHIFT + U....and it wont type a capital U but it will type a small u. Makes no sense to me. I have to hit cap locks to type a capital U. All other keys are working fine. About 2 weeks ago I had some glitches with my mouse. So I know they key works and it has to do something with the OSX at this point.

OS X :: Reassigning Alt (Option) Keys For Typing Symbols
On my old windows PC, in word I used to be able to type symbols just as if I was typing letters. Not randomly, I custom assigned each symbol I used a lot to each letter. I type a lot of symbols in my scientific notes. If I clicked control shift: ABD where alpha beta delta, 1-9 was subscript 1-9 (for chemical formulas), and I had a load more. I used the so often I could touch type them just like any other letter.

I want to do the same thing on my mac, so I can type the symbols. I have noticed that the alt key does bring up the symbols, but they are very strange and not very useful. I dont need to type a "grave" symbol very often, but alpha all the time (but there is no alpha). And they aren't assigned to my logical letter (beta to B). How do I reassign the alt keys to my symbol, surely there is an easy way, but I have looked and not found one.

Ok, there's no PgDn and Home keys either, which is annoying (was the shortcut Fn + Arrow, Ctrl + Arrow, alt + Arrow or cmd + Arrow ?!? - I though Macs were supposed to be easy to use) I really wish Apple would fix this - until then I guess I@ll have Letraset it. and the @ and ' are swapped compared to most laptops

Numbers 09 :: Won't Add Sum Of Certain Number Of Symbols
Is it possible in Numbers to have it add the number of symbols occurring in a given row? For example, the number of letter A's that might occur in the row? And is it also possible to have Numbers add up the number of different symbols in the same row, say how many B's and how many C's?

In other words, say I wrote "horses" in two cells in a row, "pigs" in three more cells in the same row, and "dogs" in five cells, also in the same row, could Numbers tell me at the end of the row that there were two horse, three pigs, and five dogs? I have looked in Numbers Help, and in the Numbers User Guide, and haven't found an answer, at least not one I understand. I don't want to get that guy from France mad at me.
