OS X V10.7 Lion :: Press Symbols On Keys The Symbols Appear Differently?
Jul 4, 2012
When I press sysmbols on keys the symbols appear differently and not how it is printed on the keypad, please advise where I can go to change the settings. I have given you examples below so my question is clearer.Shift 4 gives $ instead of Euro sign, actually I would prefer the £ sign which is shift 3 @ appears when pressing shift 2 and not the sign which has this displayed
what the pencil symbol with a line through it is which appears on my external hard drive panel on the desk top. I assume it has something to do with being a read only drive but how do i change that to read and write?
On my old windows PC, in word I used to be able to type symbols just as if I was typing letters. Not randomly, I custom assigned each symbol I used a lot to each letter. I type a lot of symbols in my scientific notes. If I clicked control shift: ABD where alpha beta delta, 1-9 was subscript 1-9 (for chemical formulas), and I had a load more. I used the so often I could touch type them just like any other letter.
I want to do the same thing on my mac, so I can type the symbols. I have noticed that the alt key does bring up the symbols, but they are very strange and not very useful. I dont need to type a "grave" symbol very often, but alpha all the time (but there is no alpha). And they aren't assigned to my logical letter (beta to B). How do I reassign the alt keys to my symbol, surely there is an easy way, but I have looked and not found one.
When using Windows XP I was able to type the copyright symbol by pressing the ALT key + 0169 and the degree symbol using ALT Key+ 0176. How do I do it in 0SX?
My 2009 MacBook keyboard won't type letters. just the number keys and symbols work...any advise?. Is this a setting issue. No physical damage. Also the track pad acts like only secondary click works. When I tap or click it activates "secondary" function
My two-year-old daughter was messing with the keyboard on my iMac, and now the keys on the keyboard are not functioning as they were before. The delete key doesn't work, "a" types a symbol-topped "a" followed by the copyright symbol, etc...
I've restores the factory settings to the function keys in system preferences, but the problem persists.
I already went to system preferences and clicked on Input Sources and did all that jazz. I have the flag in the upper right hand corner and I can view the different characters but there is no way to input them? I'm sure I'm doing something wrong. + I'm new to Mac.
How do you find symbols/characters on a MacBook keyboard? I was on a Mac suited for a small EU country and the characters, like "}" , were just not easy to find. Is there a layout one can have on the screen to find characters and symbols fast?
On of the teachers at my school is having a problem When she prints, just certain things, the printer prints symbols instead of some of the words. The whole page isnt like that, just some headings and things.
I just got my first MBP , 15inch AG, on Tuesday. Nice enough machine, getting used to the idiosyncrasies of OS X (like the useless Finder), but fair enough. There is one complete mess up on Apples part though: There are no | [ ] { } symbols on the keyboard. I have to use Google to find out how to type on a keyboard that's frigging in front of me! Ok, there's no PgDn and Home keys either, which is annoying (was the shortcut Fn + Arrow, Ctrl + Arrow, alt + Arrow or cmd + Arrow ?!? - I though Macs were supposed to be easy to use) I really wish Apple would fix this - until then I guess I@ll have Letraset it. and the @ and ' are swapped compared to most laptops
When I try to type my password and hit enter/return I get an alert sound then nothing. Nothing about wrong password. Even more rare all of a sudden all I can type are symbols so I'm assuming this is what happens when I try to type my password to wake from sleep. I have to do a hard reboot before I can type in my password. I've re-installed Snow Leopard and updates. Tried deleting some preferences.
It's still happening. Anybody got any ideas? I've searching for similar problems. Can't even find a command that changes the entire keyboard layout to symbols only. I'm running 10.6.4 on a Macbook Pro.
Basically opened up Safari as usual, googled something, and everything came up in the strange 'A' box coding/symbols. Please see the hyperlink below and if anyone has any idea what it is, or how to stop it. I'm using Google Chrome at the moment but I'm worried it's a virus? [URL]
i keep getting these squares instead of the symbols in my equations if i type in () then it shows two squares if i type in omega the it shows one square what's happening? language settings? cuz my mac was originally Chinese traditional now i set it in English. this is a screenshot from the example u can find in your grapher too but my symbols are squares.
I'm sure this has been discussed before but... what are those four little symbols in the lower left of a Finder window? Clicking on them doesn't seem to do anything.
I'm trying to do some math/biology study notes for school in pages, but I can't seem to figure out how to assign keyboard shortcuts to symbols. I could easily do it MS Office 08, where I would assign such keystrokes as Alt + Right for the "⇒" symbol but in pages it's not that simple. Right now, I essentially have to goto edit/special characters and insert each symbol in manually when I need it (Which is obviously time consuming for no reason)
Today I ran the safari update on my MBA (snow leopard). After that MBA won't start I see a white screen with the apple symbol and the sort of turning clock symbol (not the beachball) turning . after some time a horizontal line appears to be filled in , but it won't fill in \(only for a sixth) The apple symbol remains on srceen for ever but no next screen did already do several restarts no success. what else can I try ?
i just got my new hd in. i was installing all my apps i need. and then i was installing hdamp and i did something in terminal. now in finder i have folders called .Trash and like .DS_Store which i think is part of smcfancontrol. i actually now have a ton of weird named folders iv never seen before in finder right next to my user folder and app folder etc.. what did i do? does anyone else see windows symbols in my sig? i dont see how when i put the (apple) symbol in.
I am aghast at the plethora of special characters available in OS X. However, I cannot seem to locate the ordinal number symbols. I would like to find a single character that would make a cardinal number be an ordinal number. For example, 3rd, 4th, 5th, etc. I would like them, obviously, to be superscript and small but not lilliputian. I would like these characters to be compatible with the Address Book and also with my iPhone. I tried typing it out in Microsoft Word but when I cut and pasted into address book it lost the superscript quality.
Lately, I Greek and other symbols showing up in messages I receive in Thunderbird. An example is shown below... Katharine sent this over to me... Thought you might find it provocative.
Subject: Op-Ed Columnist - (URL) ****************** Is this Thunderbird or my machine?
As the picture below, my system password dialog box is showing as all symbols, with no readable text. This isn't program dependant, it happens for everything. Is there any way to fix this?
The keyboard of my macbook air 11´ is typing symbols instead of letters and so I´m not able to introduce my password. I tried to enter as a guest and to Change the Settings or the language but the Problem remains.
Quote: mbpesktop alexus$ file $$.txt 235.txt: ISO-8859 text, with CRLF line terminators mbpesktop alexus$
Yet this isn't really ISO-8859 but 8859-5 (Russian). File opens up on Windows just fine (I can see russian characters) and on MAC I get either some unknown symbols or question marks.
I think my 20" G5 iMac ( the model before the integrated iSight) may have what amounts to a terminal graphic card problem. It was working perfectly until suddenly an odd red pattern made up of what looks oddly like thousands of tiny i-ching symbols overlayed over the actual desktop. I have tried rebooting from the CD which suggests it isn't a software issue, and since I understand the graphics card is part of the logic board, it's probably not worth replacing it financially.
my keyboard has suddenly started to flip to some kind of symbols font intermittently - I've tried another keyboard, and the same thing happens. (I'm typing this on another computer) I've tried opening various system preferences, and choosing default settings wherever possible. Sometimes it flips back and forth rapidly between the weird symbols and english... almost like there's a short circuit or something. My Wacom tablet works fine...
I created a word document all texts not any picture and saved it. Later on I came back and opened it all texts were changed to symbols. Is there any way how can I recover it to bring it back to normal.
