I want to upgrade the hard drive in an iMac, it has 250 GB today, ideally would-like 500 GB.
View 1 Replies View RelatedAfter a series of events with my MBPro's screen going weird purple/magenta color intermittently and making text all but illegible, I ran the AHT (Apple Hardware Test).
This returned an error stating there was a problem with the video controller:
"4VDC/1/40000003:Video Controller"
The machine's about 3 years old.
Found this issue on many forums, but unfortunately I cannot find a solution. Taking to an apple store for repair is not an option. If I'm going to spend $300-$400 for repair, I might as well purchase a new PC. I am not that attached to this mac, and now with operating issues, I'm even less so. At least with a PC I can ctrl+alt-del and start all over. I was expecting more than 4 years out of a $1200 imac, so if I have to replace repair every few years, I'm thinking I'd rather start with a clean slate for $400 every few years with a new PC. Very frustrated not being able to find a solution online about this problem, seeing that it seems so common.Â
While working on imac and surfing the net, my screen will intermittently go to sleep. I can wiggle the mouse and click it and it will come back on right where I left off, internet connection and all. Once it happens, it continues to happen until I shut down and walk away for a good length of time (overnight). Problem seems to happen when the imac has been running for many hours at a time. I have set up the activity monitor, but I don't know what the numbers mean or what to look for. Â
This initially started happening this past summer, and I thought it was a heat issue, but now that it's happening mid-winter, not so sure. Also, in the summer this seemed to be prompted by streaming online, but now it is just from surfing. Not sure if it would shut down if I was working in Pages or Numbers, as I do so infrequently. Doesn't matter if it's Safari or Firefox and it's not a hot corners/sleep issue. Also noticed my fan runs loud sometimes, but not always. Not sure if it's a related problem. Does not sleep because of fan, no consistency in shutting down, etc.Â

My headphone jack fails intermittently. I have speakers hooked up to it and sometimes sound will not play through the speakers. Even if I disconnect the speakers and plug in headphone sound does still not play through the headphones. I have even tried restarting and that does not work. In my system preferences (In Sound Panel) it shows that something is connected to the headphone jack. I have already had the entire logic board replaced once (under warranty) and that seemed to fix the problem for a couple months. If I wait about a day or less magically the speakers start working again. This has happend twice. Has anyone else had this problem? I have about 2 weeks left on my warranty. It almost seems like it is a software problem now, but I am not sure.

Oh and my personal "Avatar" photo also reverts to an earlier choice ( intermittently ) as well. Can change it to the one I want to use but it reverts back to the old picture also from time to time ...

my keyboard has suddenly started to flip to some kind of symbols font intermittently - I've tried another keyboard, and the same thing happens. (I'm typing this on another computer)Â I've tried opening various system preferences, and choosing default settings wherever possible. Sometimes it flips back and forth rapidly between the weird symbols and english... almost like there's a short circuit or something. My Wacom tablet works fine...

Basically this would create a big 4 gig array that I could split into multiple partitions. I'd have mirroring and fast performance. I was wondering what the performance difference would be between the Greens and Blacks - Greens are known for worse performance, but I was wondering if in RAID 10 it would even matter.

At the moment I am testing with my 2010 Macbook Pro with a 330M hooked up to a Denon AVR-3806 receiver via HDMI. The Denon is hooked up to a plasma via HDMI.
I assume that the 320M in the Mini and the 330M are very similar, which is why I am posting here in the Mini forums, since I think I will get more visibility in here where people hook up their Macs to TV sets.
When I plug in the HDMI to the Macbook Pro using a mini displayPort to HDMI adapter, it automatically creates some generic DENON_AVR color profile or something like that. Things look ok, but everything is too dark for my liking. All shadow detail is lost.
It seems like I am getting better results when using the s-RGB color profile or even the Adobe RGB 1998 color profile, but i'm still not happy.
How do I get this video card, the 320M or the 330M, output just 'raw' or default, without having to calibrate the color profile? I tried calibrating using the Color menu on the Macbook Pro, but it just didn't work out. I would like it to just output the default or something so that I can just use the TV to control the final result. I have a few Popcorn Hour boxes that I currently use and I don't have to mess with any sort of color profile on those boxes. It just outputs a great picture. And I can leave the HDMI input on my TV with the same picture settings that I use for my DVR. Since I am using the AV receiver to do the HDMI switching, only one HDMI input on the TV is being used, so I have to leave the picture settings alone. The HDMI input is set on the Pioneer 6070 to accept RGB.
Will the speed be comparable between a RAID setup that uses 2 x 1TB 64MB cache Blacks, vs 1 SSD (Intel X25-M for example)? Will the difference be noticeable at all (during application launches etc). I would like to know soon because I just ordered the 2 Blacks
View 12 Replies View Relatedok, yesterday, i installed windows 7, but at the end of the installation where it said "finallizing installation" the screen blacks out and the macbook crashes...
Then when i boot up in windows 7, there is a black screen with a tiny gray "_" flashing in the top left corner. The wierd thing is when i boot off the bootcamp partition in parallels, everything works fine... I am using a macbook 5,2 (may 2009) model running leopard.
Apologies if this has been posted before, but rather than trawling through the thousands of threads, and before hitting the Genius Bar.... thought I would run this by the experienced MBP owners first.Got my first MBP (crossed over from PC back in April), and within the last couple of weeks, noticed that the screen is flickering intermittently.
Wondered if it's a glitch stemming from the switch from Graphics card as/when needed, or if it's an indication of something more serious and warrants taking it in to the Genius Bar... (don't want to part with it for days unnecessarily).
My screen flickers on my new UniBody Macbook. The problem occurs intermittently and seems to only appear when the computer is on battery. Should I take the computer to be replaced at a genius bar or should I wait for a possible software update. I have the 9c8c screen, so I don't want to risk getting the fairly inferior screen.

I'm running OSX 10.6.8. and have only used approximately 200GB of my 500 GB Hard drive. My mbpro simply hangs. I'll open a browser, or hot corner my spaces, save a file, whatever, and my laptop will not respond. Sometimes my cursor will still be movable but won't actually activate anything. I frequently get the BBOD and all I can do is wait until it stops and then all the cursor commands and keyboard clicks I made while it was spinning, execute...or not.I have run the Apple Hardware Test which came up negative. I've downloaded and installed ClamXAV which only came up with a couple of domain spoof type viruses which I've quarantined and deleted. I've got Little Snitch telling me what connections are going out but it seems that there's nothing unusual, but I frankly don't know that much about the processes other than what I have looked up on goole.I have looked at the Activity Monitor and every not and then, right when my machine hangs, I'll see a spike in Network Activity pane but almost seems as if the spike isn't being read because the processes that come up seem to be legitimate and often, they don't show that they've taken up all the bandwidth. Please help. I've got a G4 quicksilver from 2002 that still kicks A and my MBPro has made me nervous ever since switching to the Intel chipset. (Don't know if that actually has anytghing to do with it.) Lastly, I think there's a chance that I'm the fool who opened or executed something downloaded from the internet. It could have been a dashboard widget or an extension or add on or software or whatever.

I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro with retina display. I have had an intermittent problem with the cursor disappearing. It is extremely annoying and I haven't been able to stop it. Â
I reset the SMC, it worked for a while but the problem is back now.
I have a MacBook Pro 2.33 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, running Tiger 10.4.11. It has an issue where it takes a LOT of tries (10 - 20 tries) to get it to start up. When I hit the power button, it will turn on, the hard drive spins, the fans go, the usb ports work (I had a laptop cooler hooked up to it that would spin when I turned the computer power on), BUT the screen stays black, no chime. If I keep trying, by holding the power button down for 10 seconds and then hitting it again, it will usually start up on the 10th or 15th or so try.
I've tried varying amounts of time between tries, five minutes, ten minutes, overnight, etc. I haven't done any recent software or hardware updates. Once the computer starts up, it works just fine, aside from running quite hot (typically 60+ sometimes up to 80+C when I'm running photoshop or illustrator).
I have an older macbook 3,1 running Mavericks OS and recently one of my left USB ports has not been:
1) able to eject external hard drives plugged into it (I have to force eject)-instead it gives me a message that one or more programs may be using it (even though I don't have any programs using it). The hard drive is being powered by USB has a 3.0 connection although this wasn't a problem in the past... I tried the other USB port and it can eject just fine from that port.
2)Intermittent communication with mouse. Not sure if this is a hardware issue but when I try to run diagnostics on this laptop by holding down the "D" key at startup it doesn't take me to diagnostics. I no longer have the discs for this laptop (containing said hardware test) so I can't boot the diagnostics from that discs.
In lieu of a hardware test I opened CONSOLE and did a search for USB and there were a couple of these messages:Â
8/29/14 12:13:43.000 AM kernel[0]: **** [IOBluetoothHostControllerUSBTransport][SuspendDevice] -- Suspend -- suspendDeviceCallResult = 0x0000 (kIOReturnSuccess) -- 0xdc00 ****Â Â
Is this a logic board issue? Would rolling my OS back to pre-Mavericks work? The problem didn't emerge right when I updated to Mavericks however I have had luck changing OS stuff (updating or rolling back) with faulty USBs...Â
Here are other troubleshooting methods I have attempted with no success:Â -Disk Utlity (repair disk and permissions)
-RESET PRAM NVRAM
-Remove battery
-RESET SMC
-Shut Down
-Run Disk Utility @ startupÂ
I'd like to get access to a Hardware Test compatible with my macbook. The links I have found online are to incomplete files.

I have a 17-inch MacBook Pro and a 27 inch Thunderbolt display. I've been using both for about 2 years now. On occasion, the display disconnects for no obvious reason. Unplugging it from my MacBook Pro and replugging it in seems to solve the problem, but its been happening more frequently lately.Â

Didn't notice this article before posting. [URL:...] apple on Thursday released an EFI firmware update for 15-inch and 17-inch MacBook Pro mid 2010 models that fixes a freezing or stalling problem. According to Apple, EFI Firmware Update 1.9, which requires Mac OS X 10.6.4, "resolves a rare issue that may cause the system to freeze during startup or intermittently stall during operation." The update, which is a 2.16MB download, also improves external display compatibility. Issues with stalling and external displays on the mid 2010 Macbook Pros had been acknowledged in Apple Support articles. The most recent revision to the MacBook Pro line came in April. [URL:....]
View 1 Replies View RelatedI have a macbook pro (identifier MacBookPro 5,1) which I have been happily using for about 18 months, however recently the screen has been acting up. It will occasionally display lines one pixel wide, but over the whole screen (it's quite difficult to describe so I've attached a photo). This happens seemingly out of the blue, probably once every few hours of normal use, and the only way I've been able to get it to go away is to close the laptop, then open it again - Sometimes it only takes a few goes for this fix to work, sometimes a a lot.
View 2 Replies View RelatedThis is the weirdest thing, Firefox sometimes crashes when I press +Q to quit it. I cannot figure out what is causing the crashes, but it occurs most frequently on the site [URL] where xxxx are 4 digits I can't seem to remember (KoLmafia's relay browser). Most of the time it does not crash. The few times it does, it always does it on quit.
View 3 Replies View RelatedMy late 2008 macbook intermittently makes a gentle "ding" sound. By gentle I mean it's a sound effect, not the kind of beep you get from about to die hardware. I cannot work out at all what is causing it.
Sometimes it doesn't happen for weeks then will happen several times in a single day. It happens when I am not doing anything at all (ie. not even pressing keys).
I've checked all the sound effects that you can choose in system preferences and it's not the same sound as any of them. I don't use Mail or any other email clients but just in case I checked once when I heard the ding - and I didn't have any new mail. I've also checked my dashboard, and as far as I can see the calendar, clock, weather and calculator widgets don't seem to be set up to make some random alarm sound.
I'm having issues with using Internet Sharing on my Mac mini. It works perfectly fine for a while, then the connection drops. Printer sharing seems to drop in the same intermittent way. If I turn off Internet Sharing and turn it back on, everything starts working again. I'm running 10.6 on both the mini and the laptop I'm trying to get wireless internet on.
View 3 Replies View RelatedI acquired a Unibody MacBook that experienced a little water damage. The logic board was definitely shot, so I replaced that yesterday and initially the machine was working like a champ, save for a few issues:
1. The machine tries charging my battery, but eventually gives up and decides that there is no battery in the machine (there is a battery in there, and it shouldn't be dead yet, should it?)
2. I've been experiencing an issue in which the MacBook and charger aren't getting along. I've got two different chargers, both of which work on my pre-Unibody MBP consistently but sometimes I'll plug one into the MacBook and get no light, and in other cases I'll plug it in and get just a very faint green light. In either case, the machine won't start up. I usually tinker with the machine for a few minutes, taking the back plate off and checking connections, waiting a few minutes, and it's back up again.
3. Before the machine starts up, the LED blinks three times. I initially thought this was just a blink pattern to notify the user that the logic board doesn't have a serial number yet, but I've run the serializer and entered a SN in, and it still does that. Is this normal for these Macs?
I know that these MacBooks are a little more intricately tied to the battery than previous Macs. Does anyone think the above problems (at least 1 and 2) would be solved by a replacement battery? Or does it sound like something else is wrong (perhaps the DC in board)? I've never heard of anyone needing to replace a Magsafe DC in board (and from their low prices online, I'm led to believe that they rarely fail).
