Intel Mac :: Detect Hard Drive Spin/Sleep Status?

May 21, 2012

I have Snow Leopard (10.6.8) installed on a solid state drive (SSD).  I'm wondering how I can check whether my internal hard drive is spinning or asleep. Is there a diagnostic to test whether a hard drive is spinning?

OS X :: Sleep / Spin Down 2nd Hard Drive (optibay Clone)

Oct 19, 2010

I bought an optibay clone and put it in my 2010 Macbook i5. I have an SSD residing in my standard hard drive bay (because of potential hibernate issues) and the 5400rpm Apple drive + optibay clone in the Superdrive bay. How do I sleep/spin down the 5400rpm drive ? Unmounting doesn't seem to help. Put disk to sleep option in preferences is selected, but it keeps spinning and spinning. What options do we have for sleeping/spinning down this drive within OSX ?

MacBook Pro :: Hard Drive Slow Down Than Spin Back Up?

Jun 7, 2010

Last night, after a few hours of using it (from 100% to about 8%), I tried turning off the computer for the night. After the dock and everything else disappeared, I got a spinning beach ball of death. The computer wouldn't turn off for at least 15 minutes. I had to do press the power button for 5 seconds to get it to turn off. I restarted it this morning and it seems to be working fine for now, but I'm scared of turning it off again.

Here's what I know: while the beach ball was happening, my wallpaper was still on the screen, the trackpad worked, but the brightness and volumes didn't, so I'm guessing I was logged out and no files were corrupted.

During the beach ball, the hard drive would slow down, then spin back up. I waited until it had slowed down a bit to do the hard reboot. I have to say that I reset the PRAM yesterday morning, thinking it might be good because I changed the hard drive to the Momentus XT last week and I read that you should reset it when you change hardware inside the machine. I did that before the crash, so when it crashed, it was the first time I tried to turn the machine off since resetting the PRAM, could that matter?

This morning, I went to disk utility and repaired permissions, there were probably a few hundred bad permissions, but Mac OS fixed them. I also tried verification, but it was alright. I then ran the daily, weekly and monthly tasks and everything went great.

What should I do? I already have a charger problem and a screen is too blue whichever way I set it problem. Do I have a lemon here?

IMac (Intel) :: Why Does Hard Drive Keep Spinning Up When In Sleep Mode

Jun 19, 2014

When my iMac 27" is in sleep mode I have noticed that the hard drive spins up very regularly every 4 or 5 minutes. Also when placed in sleep, the monitor takes about 30 seconds to go black. It also wakes on its own for no apparent reason. No new software has been added, only normal updates, running Lion. Time machine backup is done every couple weeks.

MacBook Pro :: Can't Detect Second Hard Drive - Esata And Sata

Nov 6, 2009

I recently bought an SSD vertex 64gb for only 200$ cad. Unfortunately, I do not have enough space to install the Soundtrack Pro components on this drive. I recently bought too an eSata powered cable and a express card esata who came with it. The hard drive can't be detect on my macbook pro unibody late 2008 2,4" but runs. I install the silicon image drivers non-SL and adding over that the SL drivers.

[URL] In that case, I want to know how to uninstall those drivers from silicon image 3132? I thought about another thing if it really not work eventually. The dvd-drive bay could be remplaced by an enclosure 2.5" for my factory 250gb 5400rpm.

Second question, Does this other hard drive will take a lot more power?

MacBook Pro :: Disk Utility Does Not Detect Hard Drive

Aug 2, 2010

Just installed a new HDD into a macbook pro that was dropped. Seems fine, loads the disk and then says it can install the OS, i load up disk utility and theres no hard drive int he list just the optical drive and the DVD, its not the disk that came with the mac itself its either my proper retail one or the one that came with my personal older macbook which might be the issue. Ive taken apart and reconnected the HDD and all seems fine internally. Are there any issues that cause this except not using a full retail disk which im going to try later on, just wanted to rule everything else out.

MacBook Pro :: WD Elements External Hard Drive Won't Detect On It

Jun 27, 2014

transfer my files from my WD external drive to my MBP but to no avail. I installed them both and after that, my WD Elements wont show anymore. It was working before prior to installing MacFuse & NTFS-3G. So I tried to remove them both but still the same problem. It wont detect my WD external drive anymore. The light on my WD drive is lighted up as usual but can't be found on Finder. I also tried to remove the WD external drive from my MBP and it recognises that my WD is there! Its says did not unmount correctly, something like that. I also tried to isolate the problem using another computer, this time, Windows and it works well.

The Culprit of all this is when I install MacFue & NTFS-3G

MacBook Pro :: OS X Lion Internet Recovery - Does Not Detect Hard Drive

Jun 24, 2014

I have a MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.2 and it recently stopped booting. Got the gray screen with the folder that has the question mark on it. I have attempted to use Command + R to do a Internet Recovery of the system, but once I get to the Mac OS X Lion screen to select where i want to install OSX, there are no hard drives listed.

So I figure, the hard drive (Hitachi 500GB that came with the Mac) is damaged or not functioning correctly. This doesn't seem to be the case because I can hook it up to a notebook SATA hard drive enclosure, connect it to my other MBP and read all the contents of the drive! This was good news, as i was able to copy off all important data, etc.

Using Disc utility, the partitions check out, and the drive appears to be functioning OK.

Verify and Repair volume “Macintosh HD”

Checking file systemChecking Journaled HFS Plus volume.

Checking extents overflow file.

Checking catalog file.

Checking multi-linked files.

Checking catalog hierarchy.

Checking extended attributes file.

Checking volume bitmap.

Checking volume information.

The volume Macintosh HD appears to be OK.

Volume repair complete.Updating boot support partitions for the volume as required.

I have purchased a replacement hard drive and am waiting for it to arrive in the mail.

My question now is this:

Am I able to do some kind of time machine backup, make an image, or do some kind of target drive restore from this hard drive since it is accessible on my other computer?

I don't mind reloading the operating system on the original MBP, but would really like to avoid the process of setting up all the applications, settings, etc if this drive is in fact functional.

Hardware :: Recovering Apple Hard Drive After SMART Status Failed?

Oct 30, 2010

A while back I removed a Apple Hard Drive after I thought I had shut down the computer. Instead, it had just slept and so still had the power on. This caused the file system in the hard drive to fail, so I erased and rebuilt the file system on the Hard Drive. It worked fine for another day, and then failed. When I went to see if I could fix it, Disk Utility said the S.M.A.R.T status had failed and the send the hard drive to an apple specialist. Is there any way I could fix the Hard Drive myself?

By that I mean it sounds like the hard drive spins down but then fans still are running. After about two minutes the fans spin way up and the Mac won't start back up. I have to pull the power on my battery backup. I took it to the shop (Not an apple store) and they reinstalled the OS for me and put some new ram in. Supposedly they "Fixed' the problem.

OS X :: External Hard Drive Goes To Sleep Completely?

Apr 20, 2009

As I've read in many threads there's no way to turn off the blue light, even when my imac is off or sleep, and even thou the hdd is (or might) be asleep, the light always stays on... over all this is not a huge deal, but since the imac is in my room sometimes the light it's a little annoying. I was wondering if anyone here has an external hard drive that goes to sleep and even the lights turn off completely..

Specially if it's a famous brand.. like WD or anything along those lines.. since I'm looking to upgrade my external HDD i figured it's a good to know.. otherwise i'm going to just upgrade to the 1tb Lacie.. I'm considering the 1tb "My Book" because even thou I read that the 500gb had a lot of issues apparently the 1tb one is a lot better.. has anyone has had this drive? Any issues?

Software :: USB Hard Drive Going To Sleep Then Becoming Inaccessible?

Dec 12, 2008

I will try to be a little more clear in describing this one: I use a 500GB USB Hard Drive for storing Music, Videos, Photos, etc. I have my entire library for iTunes, iPhoto in there. Here's the problem. When I mount the drive to use it, it works fine. If I stop iTunes for 5 minutes or so and then try to open up another file from the drive I can hear the hard drive start to spin inside the enclosure, but it just hangs, forcing me to unplug it from the USB port, giving me the fail to eject warning message. When I re-mount it again it works fine, but I imagine doing this is damaging to the files and folders. Anybody else had this problem? Is there any way to adjust how much time of inactivity will cause the drive to sleep?

Mac Mini :: Hard Drive Spinning Up During Sleep?

Mar 16, 2012

I just got a new Mac Mini, and I notice that when it's in sleep mode, the hard disk is constantly spinning up and then spinning down again. It spins down roughly every thirty seconds, the power light starts blinking in the "I'm sleeping" pattern, but then the drive spins back up in a matter of seconds and the light is on constantly until the next spin-down. I've tried turning off the network, disconnecting the display, fiddling with the Energy Saver settings, quitting all programs, all to no avail. All updates are installed.

I know this is not healthy and I would like to stop it doing this as soon as possible. It is connected via firewire 800 and is a western digital 250 gig my book pro if that makes any difference. I close the lid of my laptop with it still on and connected and everything is supposed to sleep. It used to work fine, I would open the lid and everything would wake up and I could do what I was doing before with no error messages and the hard drive would still be mounted on the desktop.

Mac Pro :: LaCie External Hard Drive - Wake / Sleep

May 29, 2008

I'm on an early 2008 mac pro - used to be on a Powerbook G4. I have a 300 GB LaCie d2 Extreme external HD connected via firewire 800. Both are in 10.5.2. While on my powerbook, the drive behaved normally - fell asleep after no use, then awakened when I needed to access something. On my new mac pro, the drive behaves strangely. I only use it for backup, so it's only accessed once a day. The rest of the time I do not use it. When it's not in use, the drive sporadically wakes and sleeps. I've tried to pinpoint the cause to no avail.

I've tried all the usual suspects: browsing the forums, checking the "hard disk sleep" preference in energy saver, switching the firewire 800 cable with usb and firewire 400, watching activity monitor to see if there's a program accessing the drive (haven't found anything, but that doesn't mean it's not there). None of it works.

So basically, my hard drive is dying (clicking/chirping noises, random freezes), but for now it seems to keep working and until it finally breaks, I want to put as little load on it as possible and was wondering whether its better to put the machine to sleep at night or turn it off completely? I realise it's fairly minor by itself, so in addition I'm trying to stream as much video as possible instead of downloading, I've got it constantly hooked up to an external making hourly TM backups, also got a carbon copy bootable clone made.

IMac :: External Hard Drive & System Sleep

Oct 6, 2009

I'm running out of space on my Mac Mini's disk because of all my iTunes video files. I am thinking about buying an enclosure for my spare 1 TB hard drive, and using it as the location of my iTunes library, but I wondered how it works with the Mac Mini's energy-savings mode. My Mini is set to sleep after 15 minutes of inactivity, then wake when iTunes content is requested by my Apple TV or Airport Express. I like it, because it's very energy efficient that way! My question is, will the disks also sleep along with my computer, and will they wake properly when the computer wakes?
