Intel Mac :: Installed A New Hard Drive In 20" (2006) And Now The Hard Drive Does Not Show Up?
Mar 9, 2012
I have just installed a new hard drive in my imac intel 20" (2006) and upgraded the memory and now the hard drive does not show up in the 'select destinations' folder of the install program. I can see the hard drive in the disk utilities window however it wont let me do anything. It is a seagate 1TB SATA II drive however it is displaying it as a 7.3 TB.I have tried to erase and partition and get the same error message each time, 'Input/Output error'.
I have tried starting the thing with the install disk which is Mac OS X (Tiger?) which came with the computer
Info:

I recently installed a new hard drive in my MBP Intel, early 2008 edition. I followed the instructions from: [URL] a-MacBook-ProEverything works fine after I put in the new drive except for the Sims 2. Whenever I try to run it, it says the application quit unexpectedly and I can choose to Ignore, Report to Apple, or Relaunch, but no matter what I do I can't get it started. If i boot my laptop off my old hard drive and try running it, it works perfect. I've tried reinstalling the game, fixing permissions on my new hard drive, and booting the sims off my old hard drive through an external inclosure.

when I went into the "get info" window for the G-Drive and switched the ownership/permissions dropdown from "read/write" to "no access". When I tried to switch it back to read/write, it would say read/write in the dropdown, but then I'd try to access the g-drive and I'd only get to the first set of folders--when I'd click on a folder, there would appear to be nothing in it. (Not sure if this is really related to my current problem.)
I then tried ejecting and remounting the drive, but it didn't show up on my desktop. Stupidly, I assumed my computer didn't recognize it at all and unplugged the firewire without ejecting thru disk utility. When I did this I got the device removal error.
I then plugged the firewire back in and tried repairing the disk in disk utility, but it said it didn't need repair. When I click on the G-Drive in disk utility the info at the bottom says:
Mount Point :/Volumes/G-DRIVECapacity :465.6 GB (499,973,603,328 Bytes)
Format :Mac OS ExtendedAvailable :
Owners Enabled :NoUsed :
Number of Folders :0Number of Files :0
0 Files! I'm worried about losing all my stuff! I then tried DiskWarrior (v4.0). When I first opened it I think the info at the bottom said "This disk is a Mac OS Extended disk. This disk does NOT appear on the desktop." I'm not quite sure about that "not" b/c after rebuilding the directory of the G-DRIVE I know it now says "This disk does appear on the desktop." Anyway, it's definitely not appearing on my desktop. After building the directory it said "All file and folder data was easily located. Comparison of the original and replacement directories indicate that there will be changes to the number, the contents and/or the attributes of the files and folders." And later: "19 files (and 2 folders) had a directory entry w/ an incorrect text encoding value that was repaired." And:
Disk Info:
Files: 51,646
Folders: 18, 493
Free Space: 65.42GB
(etc)
I then clicked "Replace" whereupon it said it was successfully replace. But still it did not appear on the desktop even after ejecting, remounting, rebooting computer, etc.
If anyone has any advice I'd really appreciate it. I'm pretty desperate here! Thanks!
(FYI I already tried going into the Finder permissions and unclicking and reclicking the box for showing disks on the desktop. Also, I plan on getting DataRescueII in case that's necessary, but i hope it isn't)

So, I have a 2006 model MacPro. Currently, I have (3) 500GB hard drives and (1) 750GB hard drive.
I would like to possible add a 2TB or at least 1.5TB internal hard drive to it (I have so much clutter with my external drives already)
I called Apple and they said that model only went to 750GB....
Is there really a limit? It's a SATA drive so I figure it would keep going? has anyone had any luck with larger drives??!

Odd stufff, I have a 500 gig Lacie ext HD that my user uses on her Vista machine...
I am setting up a replacement for the Vi$ta machine, which is a 24 inch imac.
I plugged in the ext HD and nothing happened after I powered on the ext HD.
I checked disk utility and it showed up but as a 2TB size ext HD...
I unplugged the Lacie and plugged it back in and all the info showed up correctly.
But ALL the buttons under "First Aid" are greyed out so I cant verify permissions, disk, or repair disk or permissions.

I purchased a Hitachi Travelstar 2.5 Inch 500 GB 7200 RPM SATA II 16 MB Cache Internal Hard Drive 0S02858 to replace the dead hard drive in my black macbook (late 2006). I have the old hard drive out. Here are my 2 questions.... first, there is no pull tab on the new hard drive. How will I get it out if I need to? The one I removed is a Seagate and has a covering on the top with the plastic pull tab. should I put that over the new hard drive? It comes right off the old one. Second, when I compare the connectors there is a section, looking straight on at the pins, on the far left that in the old one has 4 pins. In the new Hitachi there is just an empty compartment. Does that mean it won't work? Or should I just try it? If I leave it without the plastic pull tab how will it come out if I have to get it back out?

I bought HIS Radeon HD4870 512MB DDR5 for my Mac Pro 2006 1.1. The first problem I've found it that card will not fit to slot 1, because of too long screws. So I installed it in slot 2, leaving 7300GT in slot 1. The next problem was how to get rid of these power cables - I've tried the more elegant way taking that molex adapter under HDD trays, but cables where too short So I installed them on the right of Superdrive's tray. Now on Mac OS X I got kernel panic (probably the injector thing). On Windows Vista card is detected, but automatically disabled (probably not enough power or just PCI-EX 1x slot is not compatible). Here are photos from the operation. I'll try to install Accelero S1 rev. 2 with Noctua 120 mm fan and will see how things go I've also ordered two special Apple PCI-EX power connectors from Austria.

I am trying to download MAC OSX 10.5 that I just purchased and my hard drive on the computer won't show up as a destination drive to download the software on. I erased the disk figuring that would help but it did not. The computer is a PowerMac G5 1.8 mhz, 1GB RAM, 160MB HD.

I just installed a new hard drive successfully (I think) onto my Powerbook G4 after my original died. I installed Leopard from the legal CD - but now I can't find the Airport program. I know I have the original wireless card because my computer was running wireless on my old hard drive. Any advice out there?
I also realised that Dashboard didn't install with my OSX dvd. On the apple website that program is specified (as with Airport). Am I doing something wrong?

Okay so my 2009 MacBook pro would not start up, took it to the genius bar and they said I need a new hard drive. I installed a Western Digital blue Scorpio one from Best Buy and now when I turn on the computer I just get a flashing folder with a question mark. I've tried holding down c or option when rebooting, and rebooting with and without the OSX install DVD. I'm never given any options and it either starts up to a blank screen or to the question mark.

A few months ago my HP tablet pc just died on me, so that's when I decided to get a Mac.
Although, I needed to transfer the data and since my HP computer wouldn't get to the login screen; I was told to take out the hard drive, put it in an enclosure, and hook it up to my Macbook Pro.
I finally got around to getting an enclosure and hooked everything up. Now when I connected the hard drive to the Mac, it wouldn't show up on my desktop.
I did some searching around the internet, and there was some suggestions about the hard drive not being a "master" and I had to take out a plastic thing called a "jumper." The HP hard drive didn't have a jumper, so now I'm stumped on what to do next.
The hard drive enclosure I purchased was a 2.5" Rocketfish SATA HD Enclosure. aka; model RF-AHD25
I DID install Mac Fuse. Just not the driver needed to write on the hard drive, since I wasn't gonna write on it.

Today I went to plug in my Lacie 250 GB USB external hard drive into my 13 in. MacBook to get a shirt template for a design I am making. I discovered that the hard drive just would not mount and show on the desktop, and I remembered that this happened a few days before, but all I did was unplug it and plug it back in, and it worked... except that today, that didn't work at all. I tried the other USB port, and the hard drive showed up on the desktop for about a second, and then disappeared. I kept on replugging it back into both USB ports, but nothing happened.
Then I tried to see if it would work on the PC beside me, and it was recognized as an external device; however, a message came up telling me the drive was malfunctioning. I am guessing this is from ejecting it incorrectly (because I am in a hurry to head to my next classes...I use this laptop at school), but I have incorrectly disconnected it before in the past and this problem never happened to me before.
Every single project I have ever created for my design career is on that hard drive, and all I want now is to get my files back. All I need it to do is show up on the desktop for just the right amount of time for me to copy my files onto my computer.
I read online to put it into the freezer for a while and it should mount, but that didn't work. I tried using Disk Warrior, Data Rescue 3, and Tech Tool Deluxe, but the hard drive did not show up on any of those apps.I tried plugging the hard drive into an iMac as well, but it did not show up either.

How do I transfer all data from my old internal hard drive to a new internal hard drive? I have an iMac with a 320gb internal HD that is full and I am replacing it with a 2tb internal drive. I have several external drives; 1 tb, 2tb and 3 tb. The 2 tb is being used for Time Machine. Do I have to buy an enclosure? If so, where would I get an inexpensive one? I also want to partition the new internal drive for Windows, and I'm not sure how much space to use for that. I plan to use Windows to check my work in PowerPoint created on my Mac for clients on PCs.

Got a new MBP last month to replace my white MacBook - loving it as an upgrade but one gripe - if I'm sat using it on my knee I regularly hear the "click" type noise of what I imagine is the protection of the hard drive because it thinks it is being dropped.
I never heard this on my old Mac and while it's not a huge issue it is a bit disconcerting, as though I'm being told off for moving it in a fairly responsible way.

My PowerBook G4 (Alum) died. I've had it for 4 years, taken it with me to Alaska and all over the lower 48, and have had nothing but happy experiences. I knew she was gonna go, but I was hoping she'd hold on until I could afford a MacBook. Alas, no. The problem appears to be the ability of the logic board to communicate with the hard drive. I can hear the HD spin, but even with Disk Warrior, I cannot locate it. The Mac Geniuses at my local Apple store confirmed this and gave me a shoulder to cry on. I've run Disk Warrior, Disk Utility, and tried finding it using the target disk mode - no luck.
The problem is that I've got 4 years of teaching materials, 6000 songs, and irreplaceable pictures on the HD, so I can't bring myself to just trash it. It's true that you only fail to back up you stuff once. This is my once. I've heard that with PC hard drives, you can just drop the old HD into a USB HD box and use it as an external HD. I can't afford professional data retrevial, and I want to give this option a try if it'll work with a Mac HD. Any ideas or suggestions?

I have a Lacie Porsche 160 gb firewire drive, it worked well, I ve had it a couple of years. Now when I plug it in it won't show the disk image on the desktop. system profiler finds it and I have the Lacie upgrade tool and that checks it and says it is up to date. I have tried it on two other macbooks one older, one newer all Leopards, and one imac desktop. They all found it. so it appears to be a problem with my laptop only.
I did use it with time machine but it ran out of space, Using another laptop I have deleted all lot of stuff off it and tried changing its name.

I have an aluminum unibody macbook from October 2008. I'm looking to upgrade the 160 GB hard drive inside to a 500 GB one I'm considering from Newegg. Would it be possible to migrate/copy/clone the entire contents of my current hard drive to the 500 GB one? I also have a section of my current hard drive partitioned for Bootcamp. Would this affect my ability to transfer everything over?
If this is possible at all, how can I go about doing so? If there are steps laid out somewhere, I'd appreciate a referral. Sorry if my question is a little elementary, but I did a search on these forums and also google and nothing really came up

I have no id whats wrong, I want to install Snow Leopard(from the external) on my Core2duo Macbook pro, which is running Leopard at the moment.
I have a Snow Leopard image, and I have used Disc utility to partition the external hard drive (GUID), and I assume the partition and install went well on the external, because in Disc start the external appears as OSX 10.6.
Then the problem: The macbook wont boot from the newly made external it just gives me this sign (of course without the colours).
I have tried to start the macbook normal, and with the option key held down were the external pops up.
I have also tried to chose the external in disc start and reboot with no luck.
I have tried to start the Snow Leopard install(external) within Leopard where the install start fine, but when it reboots and wants to continue the install, the sign appears.
The external harddrive is a 5400rpm 40gb 2,5" which is only powered by the usb port maybe thats the problem?
