OS X :: Control Airport With Automator Properly?

Oct 19, 2009

I'd like an automator thingy to do the following for me:
1. activate airport
2. wait a little and then login to my vpn account (defined in apple's vpn)

ideally, also doing the reverse (logout vpn, deactivate airport).

now, automator's record function already fails as the mouse pointer never hits the airport icon when playing back my recording....

anybody know what's wrong and how to do this properly?

OS X :: How To Properly Archive And Install Snow Leopard

May 22, 2010

Im a little confused about doing an Archive and Install in SL. There is not an option to do this like there was in Tiger. I spoke to Apple Care and was told to click on Install Mac OS X icon on the install disk for an Archive and Install. After reading some old posts on this subject, this method seem questionable.

OS X V10.5 Leopard :: DVD Player Window Won't Resize Properly

Jun 7, 2012

I have several DVDs recorded on an LG DVD recorder that are the wrong aspect ratio (they play what should be 16:9 as 4:3, making everything look tall and narrow). I have tried everything in DVD Player to fix this, but only one thing works :Select Video ZoomDeselect "Lock aspect ratio"Select Manual mode and move "Width" slider until picture looks correct At this point, the adjustments have moved the left and right edges of the video out of the Viewer window. "Hey, no problem" I thought, "I'll just resize the Viewer window horizontally until the whole video is showing". Unfortunately, I can't. Dragging the bottom right of the Viewer window resizes it both horizontally and vertically DESPITE the "Lock aspect ratio" box being unchecked. In other words, it wants to preserve a 4:3 aspect even though I have adjusted the width slider manually. What I'm left with, is a window that shows the video undistorted, but with the left and right edges missing. What am I doing wrong, or this a bug in DVD Player?

OS X :: External Monitor Not Working Properly With Snow Leopard

Jan 17, 2010

Recently I installed the Snow Leopard OS on my Macbook Pro, previously I had 10.5 installed. However, now when I connect my Macbook to my flatscreen TV (Panasonic Plasma), using a mini display port cable to an HDMI cable, there's a black border around the edges of the picture. Before the Snow Leopard upgrade I was able to view the entire screen area of the Plasma TV, without any borders. The only thing I've done differently since then is install Snow Leopard. Does anyone know how I can fill the screen with image without using the zoom option on the TV screen, as the zoom cuts off some image at the top and bottom?

OS X :: Snow Leopard And Time Machine - Progress Counter Not Working Properly

Oct 3, 2009

I've searched the web and the forums but I do not find anything that matches my problem, here it is. I'm using 1 Time machine drive (WD My Passport Studio 500 GB FW 800 for Mac) for my two machines, MacBook Pro (June 09, upgraded from Leopard with Snow Leopard Up to date disc) and my MacBook white (Late 2007, upgraded from Leopard with Snow Leopard retail disc). On my MacBook white, when I plug in the TM drive via USB, and when I click on the TM icon in the menubar, it says "Calculating changes (or similar)... (1, 2, 3, and so on %) until 100 % and the backup works just fine. But when I plug my TM drive onto my MacBook Pro (via FW), it says "Calculating changes... 1%" and it remains stuck on those 1%, but then after a while starts the backup properly.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: Time Machine Exhibiting Several Odd Behaviors, Not Working Properly?

May 16, 2012

I recently had my HDD replaced after a failure, and reinstalled 10.6.8 using Carbon Copy Cloner. The new drive came from Apple, and had 10.5.8 pre-installed (the OS that my late 2008 MBP came with), but CCC did what seemed to me to be an excellent job restoring. The clone was right at about two weeks prior to the old HDD failure, so once I cloned over, I only had to sync up with Dropbox, and manually move a handful of files (really from just a couple of folders for work) for things to be just as they were leading up to the failure. Here's what's happened (roughly) over the past week with TM:

1. Slow backups. Slow as in 1-2 KB/minute. This all starts with TM "calculating changes" which means about 20 minutes of crawling through and re-indexing(?) directories to look for changes. This happens each time.

2. Backups come in successive pairs. Time Machine Buddy shows this. One backup ends, having copied ~277,000 files (not a typo), then a second one begins immediately after, copies ~255,000 files (also not a typo), then either thins and/or deletes expired files.

3. #2 happens over the course of 2 1/2 hours, reliably.

4. After #2, the next backup comes about 2 hours later, starting all over again. Mere KB take the full 2 1/2 hours.

5. After each of the last backups, I have MORE space reported as available on the external drive. It seems to randomly delete backups from roughly 1 month ago.

Here's what I have tried:

1. Delete the TM prefs file in my user folder (not /)

2. Repaired the disk - things were very screwed up, with links needing repair all over the place. Thought this would solve things, but it didn't.

3. Hid the external from Spotlight's indexing

4. Deleted backups (via the TM interface -> "delete backups" option, NOT manually) after disk repair, in the event/hopes that initial backups following the new HDD replacement were bad.

5. Repaired permissions, etc.

6. Console doesn't throw what appear to be any errors. Just shows the successive backups mentioned above, the hundreds of thousands of files copied, and that TM deleted something each time.

OS X :: Leopard And Airport Dropouts?

Oct 4, 2008

One thing preventing me from FULLY adopting Leopard is the fact that i can't seem to maintain a steady Airport connection. I've done everything i can including router reset, OS reinstall, software updates, firmware updates, a plethora of suggested fixes and still no dice.

I know its Leopard because all other systems in my house running XP, Vista, Tiger, OS X Mobile connect just fine to the same router, in fact i'm dual booting Leopard/Tiger on my iMac and when i load the Tiger partition it works fine but when i load Leopard...

I'm running an AEBS and yes my channel is interference free.

OS X :: Airport Shutting Down After Upgrading To Leopard / Fix It?

I upgraded my PowerBook G4 from Tiger to Leopard yesterday. Before the upgrade Airport was working just fine. I cleared my hard drive then installed Leopard, and now any time I start a download my Airport shuts down. In order to complete a download I have to turn off Airport, turn it back on, let it work for about 5 seconds, then repeat the process until it finishes. It's obviously a problem with Airport because it does the same thing in both Safari and Firefox.

Hardware :: FTP Through Airport Extreme Running Mac OS X Leopard

Jun 23, 2008

First of all, I'd like to clarify that I am running MAC OSX Leopard, Windows XP Professional and Ubuntu Linux on my home network. I was an IT Director in my previous career and familiar with the technical workings of the proper network setup. I am having issues with the FTP Server. I have a NAS (Network Access Storate Device w/RAID 1) DLink DNS-323 which is great, and the FTP Server works just as well "within" my private network behind my router. Unfortunately, it does not when accessing from the public internet. I have checked and double checked, as well as tried different settings to get this to work. I am using an Apple Airport Extreme with a Netopia DSL modem attached (Pass Through Mode) using PPPoE. I can actually authenticate from the public internet into the DNS, but after authenticating, my browser just stays in loading mode; therefore it is reaching it at some point.

(BTW, I know it is b/c I also purposefully entered a wrong password and it returned an access denied message). I know the DNS-323 FTP Server is working, as I said before, it works when I access it directly behind my router (private network), so I know my browsers (Tried Safari, Firefox and Explorer) and have confirmed the settings on both the DNS and my Apple router numerous times. All ports on both sides are set to 21 (DNS and Private/Public on the Airport Extreme). I've ensured to assign a static IP on the router for the DNS-323. What can be causing this failure to access the FTP Server?

Hardware :: Leopard Network Printing Via AirPort With LaserWriter 8500?

Mar 9, 2008

I have just setup a Time Capsule to host a local wireless network to replace an older wireless/wired mixture.

The network works a treat, and our four office computers all pick it up without issue. I have plugged a USB Epson Inkjet printer into the TC's USB port, and all the networked computers can print to it without issue.

However, we also have a trusty LaserWriter 8500 that we use. I plugged this into the first ethernet (LAN) port on the TC , and expected just to be able to add it in the Print & Fax Preference pane. Sadly though, this is not the case. The printer cannot be found in the Default Browser, or the AppleTalk tab (AppleTalk has been turned on for AirPort).

OS X :: Time Machine Backup Using AirPort Disk On Snow Leopard?

Aug 29, 2009

Update: "Magically," the backup is working over AirPort Disk. I'll chalk it up to a Snow Leopard ghost. I have been backing up to a WD My Book 1TB drive connected to my Airport Extreme router without any problems. Yesterday I upgraded to 10.6 (installed over 10.5.8, not a clean install) and have been having problems with Time Machine since. After the OS finished installing, I attempted to perform a wireless backup. Everything mounted properly, and it began a 10GB backup. When it got to around 5.8GB, Time Machine came up with a network error message (not sure which one exactly) and stopped the backup.

At this point I just connected the drive directly to my computer to perform the backup, and it did so without any hiccups. But now I can't even connect to the AirPort disk, let alone try to backup to it. Time Machine says it's not configured, and when I try to browse for my Time Machine Backup Disk it won't let me select it, even though the drive shows up in AirPort Utility. I've enclosed a screenshot of what I'm seeing. Does anyone have any tips to help me get this mounted and working again? This is not turning out to be as painfree an update as advertised.

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: First Time Machine Full Backup Over Ethernet Not Recognized Latter Over AirPort

Feb 5, 2012

I have a 3rd Party NAS (Iomega Home Media Network Cloud Edition 2TB) and MacBook with OSX 10.6.8. I did run a first TM full backup over Ethernet (around 240GB) because of the extremely slow transfer speed over WiFi via the AirPort. It went Ok (after several tries and reading here in the forum). Then, I disconnected my MacBook from the wired network, so futures frequently backs-up happen wirelessly, however, it seems that it did not recognize the first full back-up, asked for re-doing it again from scratch and erased my first full-backup-over-Ethernet.

I've seen that the MAC address is used as part of the sparse bundle file name; obviously, there will be a conflict here because Ethernet and AiPort do not have the same MAC address (of course !).I will run a brand new full first backup over Ethernet, but I'd like to know what do I have to do for getting it recognizable for futures backups over AirPort?

OS X V10.6 Snow Leopard :: 2006 IMac Won't Stay Connected Via Airport To Wireless Network

Apr 23, 2012

I recently moved and am connecting my iMac (2006 Intel) via the internal Airport card to a high-speed cable network here at home.

For some reason, my connection started off fine but after a few hours (sometime minutes) of browsing the web, the connection will slow to a crawl or just stop completly.

I've tried changing the DNS settings, turning Airport off/on, re-booting the wireless router (it's a Netgear) all to no avail.

The connection will seem to be okay and then...back to the molasses slow or no connection at all. At my previous residence, I was connecting the same way without any issues.

As an aside, there are 2 iPads, 2 iPhones and a MacBook Air all connecting to the same network without any issues whatsoever.

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Not Forwarding Airdisk To Connected Airport Express Network?

Apr 25, 2010

I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.

Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.

My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.

For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.

The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.
