Simple, I have a file on the desktop and I want to copy it to a folder in my external drive.Â
The Problem Instead of pasting the file in the selected folder it is pasting it in the root directory. It does this with my external drive as well as my internal mac drive. Never have seen this before.

I have dropbox and configured it to show the icon on the tray over the left of my day/time. When I click onto the folder via Finder, I see the folder icon. The "Info" for this folder should allow me to read/write to the folder. However, when I ask to see the contents, I do not get a listing of the files within the folder. I am very frustrated since I have been struggling to resolve this configuration issue out on my own. It is most likely 'user issue' which led me here. However, I am at my ropes end.

I have seen some people talking about a new feature in Snow Leopard, where hovering over MP3s or PDFs allowed you to preview the file. I am not seeing this feature on my Snow Leopard machine. How do you enable it?
View 16 Replies View RelatedSometimes I simply cannot open a new finder window. If I use Command-N or if I choose New Finder Window in the Finder menu, nothing happens. If I am using Command-N, I can see the File heading in the Finder menu bar highlighting, and then after a few seconds the highlight goes, but no window opens. Also, clicking on my Downloads icon in the dock, the dialog opens showing all the files, but if I then click on Open in Finder, the dialog closes but nothing happens. Now that I am writing this message, it all works again! That's what I mean by 'sometimes'. This issue can last for tens of minutes. Secndly, and this is still a problem, my finder Preferences do not stick. So for instance, I don't want to see an icon for my hard disk on the desktop, so I untick this in Finder preferences. The icon disappears. If I now re-start, then it comes back. The same happens for removing the empty trash warning and all of the other Finder Preference tick boxes.Â
Now, when the first problem of not being able to open a finder window suddenly stopped being a problem, the icon for the hard disk suddenly appeared on my desktop. So the two issues are linked. This has been going on intermittently for a few days. I have verified my disk, and repaired permissions.

Im a little confused about doing an Archive and Install in SL. There is not an option to do this like there was in Tiger. I spoke to Apple Care and was told to click on Install Mac OS X icon on the install disk for an Archive and Install. After reading some old posts on this subject, this method seem questionable.

Recently I installed the Snow Leopard OS on my Macbook Pro, previously I had 10.5 installed. However, now when I connect my Macbook to my flatscreen TV (Panasonic Plasma), using a mini display port cable to an HDMI cable, there's a black border around the edges of the picture. Before the Snow Leopard upgrade I was able to view the entire screen area of the Plasma TV, without any borders. The only thing I've done differently since then is install Snow Leopard. Does anyone know how I can fill the screen with image without using the zoom option on the TV screen, as the zoom cuts off some image at the top and bottom?

I've searched the web and the forums but I do not find anything that matches my problem, here it is. I'm using 1 Time machine drive (WD My Passport Studio 500 GB FW 800 for Mac) for my two machines, MacBook Pro (June 09, upgraded from Leopard with Snow Leopard Up to date disc) and my MacBook white (Late 2007, upgraded from Leopard with Snow Leopard retail disc). On my MacBook white, when I plug in the TM drive via USB, and when I click on the TM icon in the menubar, it says "Calculating changes (or similar)... (1, 2, 3, and so on %) until 100 % and the backup works just fine. But when I plug my TM drive onto my MacBook Pro (via FW), it says "Calculating changes... 1%" and it remains stuck on those 1%, but then after a while starts the backup properly.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently had my HDD replaced after a failure, and reinstalled 10.6.8 using Carbon Copy Cloner. The new drive came from Apple, and had 10.5.8 pre-installed (the OS that my late 2008 MBP came with), but CCC did what seemed to me to be an excellent job restoring. The clone was right at about two weeks prior to the old HDD failure, so once I cloned over, I only had to sync up with Dropbox, and manually move a handful of files (really from just a couple of folders for work) for things to be just as they were leading up to the failure. Here's what's happened (roughly) over the past week with TM:
1. Slow backups. Slow as in 1-2 KB/minute. This all starts with TM "calculating changes" which means about 20 minutes of crawling through and re-indexing(?) directories to look for changes. This happens each time.
2. Backups come in successive pairs. Time Machine Buddy shows this. One backup ends, having copied ~277,000 files (not a typo), then a second one begins immediately after, copies ~255,000 files (also not a typo), then either thins and/or deletes expired files.
3. #2 happens over the course of 2 1/2 hours, reliably.
4. After #2, the next backup comes about 2 hours later, starting all over again. Mere KB take the full 2 1/2 hours.
5. After each of the last backups, I have MORE space reported as available on the external drive. It seems to randomly delete backups from roughly 1 month ago. Â
Here's what I have tried:
1. Delete the TM prefs file in my user folder (not /)
2. Repaired the disk - things were very screwed up, with links needing repair all over the place. Thought this would solve things, but it didn't.
3. Hid the external from Spotlight's indexing
4. Deleted backups (via the TM interface -> "delete backups" option, NOT manually) after disk repair, in the event/hopes that initial backups following the new HDD replacement were bad.
5. Repaired permissions, etc.
6. Console doesn't throw what appear to be any errors. Just shows the successive backups mentioned above, the hundreds of thousands of files copied, and that TM deleted something each time. Â

I have Snow Leopard 10.6.8 on my Mac Pro and also backup using Time Machine. My main (startup) hard drive is close to failing-- before it does I want to transfer everything to a new internal drive. Seems to be there are several ways to do this:
1. Clone the original drive to the newer drive with 3rd party software (such as ChronoSync?)
2. Restore to the new HDD from Time Machine (which I believe requires me to clean install Snow Leopard on the new drive?)
3. Use Migration Assistant.
Which would be the best route?

No change in my system for 2 years, except regular updates. I can close the application (Safari for example) but the iMac stays frozen. When I use "force to quit", it is proposed to restart Finder. But, the iMac stays stucked with the color wheel turning. The only way to stop and restart is to switch off and on.

View 4 Replies View RelatedOn the dock, to the far right you can have applications, downloads, etc list of folder. What I would like to do is modify the default behavior for these icons only so that they open on hover rather than click. I want to do this because I have them setup as list style, and I can very quickly browse to whatever folder I need from there. If you open a folder in column view, you can hold down ALT and resize all the columns at the same time. This will also change column size for ALL folders in the system immedietly. Is there such a shortcut where I can also change the size of the finder window for ALL finder windows? Some finder windows open as tiny little thing, and I woudl prefer a nice large default window. I know you can do each one separately and close it but who wants to do that for every folder?

Tried to turn off computer and it kept prompting me to force quite various applications. I have since restarted the computer but now am getting this error when trying to open Finder. I have looked through several discussions and unfortunately am not an apple expert so much of what I am reading is foreign to me.I have opened the Terminal and entered a prompt that made all of my desktop docs and finder visable, but as soon as I closed out the Terminal it all disappeared again.Can anyone point me in the right direction - step by step - to get Finder back up and running.To my knowledge all other applications seem to be working as normal.FYI I do have a few extermal items attached to the Mac. I have a new iMac and I want to transfer my Apple Mail from my older Mac Book Pro running Snow Leopard to it. I've zipped up the Mail folder that was under Library and I found out how to access the hidden Library on my iMac. I see mail has changed a bit in Lion and before I unzip my mail folder into /Library/Mail, I want to make sure I won't screw anything up.Â
