Hardware :: Can A AirPort Guest Network Be Closed?

Sep 16, 2009

Is there anyway to make a AirPort guest network closed using the guest network function of an AirPort Extreme Base Station?

It seems to be like the guest network is always visible, even if the primary network is closed.

Hardware :: Extending Guest Network From AirPort Extreme

Apr 12, 2009

I can't seem to get my airport express to extend the guest network from my new airport extreme. It will extend the private network but the guest network doesn't show up in the list under airport utility. Is there anyway to extend the internet only except to one computer which needs to share a printer back to the original extreme?

Hardware :: Set Up A Guest Network With 1st Gen TC + Router?

Mar 6, 2009

My current setup is a first gen TC running at 802.11n 5GHz with a Linksys WRT54GS in bridge mode broadcasting 802.11b/g. Both are WPA2 networks, and the setup has been great so far.

When the new AEBS/TC came out, I was looking at the guest network capability and that's got me wondering if there's any way I can create such a network with my setup. I would love to have a network for my DS and PSP to be able to join and would preferably like to have it unsecured to avoid connection issues.

I'm well aware that my TC doesn't have the proper hardware to do that by itself, but is there any way I can create a guest network to allow access to the Internet but not any networked computers on the main network? Would I need a seperate router to do this, or would my current setup be sufficient? What settings would I need, or can this even be done?

Come to think of it, would it just be easier for me to setup an additional gateway using a third router, hide the SSID and have it unsecured? (Although I'd be afraid of compromising my network's security with this method.)

OS X :: No Access For Network Connection For Guest Account

Mar 1, 2010

After creating a guest account I noticed that anyone uses that account can use my (remembered) secured network connection. Normally, in my network settings, remembering used networks option is checked. When I look into the keychain, I see two entries for my network name. One is in my logins section and the other is in the system section. I suppose, the guest uses the entry which is in the system section. If I delete the entry which is in system section, it is been created again on next connection.

If I do not want any guest to use my network connection, I am having to cancel the remembering used network option and select disconnect on logging out option in airport advanced settings. But; if do this, I am having to select my network and type its password every time I login. I simply want if a guest uses the Guest Account, he wouldn't able to use my network connection without entering the correct password. Is it possible?

OS X :: Any Way To Allow Temporary WiFi Access (Guest Network)

Sep 6, 2010

I have an Airport Extreme base station and am curious if there is anyway to allow temporary access to my wifi signal its configured with a WPA passcode. I have neighbors that come over and use my wifi but then continue to use it when they return to their homes, is there anyway for me to allow them temporary access or create some kind of guest network that I could turn off when they leave? I HATE having to change the administrative password when they leave because I have to re-enter it on all of my devices.

OS X :: Airport Extreme - How To Configure Guest Networking

Sep 19, 2009

Background: I have a long background in computing and networking, but am new to the specific operation of the Apple Airport Extremes.

I have a network with an existing router in place that connects to the internet, and provides DHCP for the network. I want to add (potentially many) Airport Extremes to this network to provide two basic functions:

1) Wireless access to the existing network over a large office area (preferably on the same subnet as the existing, wired network, with the current router [NOT the AEs] providing DHCP services) and

2) Guest network access such that users joining the guest network can access the internet, but NOT any of the addresses on the main network.

I can find no way to do this trivially. It seems that if I set the AEs to BRIDGE mode, the option to set up a guest network disappears (perhaps reasonably so, since the AE would need to be able to manage the address range for the two networks).

Hardware :: AEBS On Company Network (with Guest Feature)

Jan 6, 2010

We're looking to install 3 WAP in our new office. The alternative to a AEBS set up would be Cisco's WAP4410N WAP. It's a smaller office (about 35 people), but we'll be divided amongst three floors, so 3 separate devices. It's a PC server with mostly PC devices connecting to the wireless network. I'd like to have an integrated wireless network, which I know the AEBS can do. I also like the dual-band function of the AEBS, since there are plenty of older machines that are used in the office. But what I really like about it is the Guest feature.

Our clients are usually just allocated to one area (like conference rooms) in the past, but now they are somewhat dispersed through out. Having the Guest network extend everywhere that the Company network is would be great, and we wouldn't have to buy secondary WAPs to do this. However, the router/firewall function would have to be turned off on the AEBS so that our main DC was still handing out IPs, and I don't know if this or bridging the three AEBS together would remove the functionality of the Guest feature.

I have a Nintendo DS which cannot access WPA encrypted networks, so I wondered if I could get a newer Time Capsule and create a guest network for the DS which would be encrypted by WEP.I saw something that said guest networks could only use WPA or WPA2, so that is why I am wondering.

When I have a guest attempting to log into the guest network, it displays the error: "connection failed". I am able to connect my iPhone(listed MAC in router) to the guest network just fine however, my "guest" laptop that has no MAC address in the router will not connect. It sounds like a MAC ACL issue. I currently have the "(default)" set to no access.

Hardware :: New Airport Extreme/simultaneous Dual-band And Guest Networking?

Mar 6, 2009

Anyone have the new Airport Extreme? I have a question about the new features.

I'm interesting in picking one up because I've been looking for a good 802.11n router for awhile, and the simultaneous dual-band radios plus the guest networking feature are the real sellers for me. Both those features exist in part on other routers, but I'd have to put in a lot of work in a DD-WRT compatible router to get them both to work properly.

My question, though, is can both the dual-band radios and the guest networking feature be run simultaneously? It seems that from a hardware perspective, the easiest way to get a second network and SSID running would be to use the second radio, which precludes the dual-band feature. Does anyone have the new Airport Extreme yet? Can you run both at the same time?

MacBook Pro :: WIFI Network Performance - Lid Closed Vs Open?

Mar 1, 2009

I have a house that is not ideal for wifi. In particular, my office is an extension off the kitchen which has a solid brick wall between it and the rest of the house. Through 2 airport extremes, i get great wireless N signal everywhere in the house except this office. So, i added a 'N' airport express at the base of the stairs to this office and 'extended' the network.

So, i have 2 macbook pros up here. One is running on batteries, sitting on my desk, lid open. It is showing a rate of 108, signal -66 and noise -88 in the advanced wireless clients section of the airport express which it is getting it's signal from.

The next is closed and connected to a LED 24" cinema display. It is right next to the other MBP. It is showing a rate of 41, signal -80 and noise -93.

Why such a huge difference? Would it be because the lid is closed, it is connected to the display or a faulty macbook?

Hardware :: New Time Capsule - Dual Network - ONLINE FILE SHARE And Guest Networking

Mar 3, 2009

1. Dual networking. You can run N on 5.0 ghz and at the same time run A/B/G whatever on 2.4 ghz for legacy devices such as the iPhone. No speed hit.

2. Easy to use guest mode which will open up one of the frequencies for use as a password less (optionally you can add a password) access to the net but locking off your computers, printer etc. on the other encrypted frequency. Great for having friends over and getting them on your network without having to open it up to attack or having to give out huge passwords for them to enter.

3. If you have MobileMe then the new Time Capsule FILE SHARES EVERYTHING OFF THE ENTIRE DRIVE TO THE NET!

OS X :: Malware/Network Activity Is Constantly Running Even Browser Closed?

Aug 15, 2010

I'm running an Intego X6 full scan right now, but something is amiss:
1. Activity Monitor shows 19 packets in/sec, 22 packets out/sec, currently at 26024 packets in and 24996 out since rebooting maybe 10 minutes ago)
2. iStat shows 4k in/out per sec
3. My router's activity light incessantly blinks
4. My router won't light up at the initial login, so the issue only happens with my current user account

When disabling all internet activity through Intego's firewall, my router also stops. Amusingly, Activity Monitor continues to show packets being sent and received. (I didn't see anything in Activity Monitor that would show me which process(es) are using the network as well...)

I can't seem to find any PID or process names out of the ordinary, but usually there should be no activity when there's no activity.

I do keep OS X updated as often as possible, but that doesn't mean something wicked this way comes...

Are there apps I can use that will tell me what process is sending these mystery packets?

Hardware :: Airport Extreme Not Forwarding Airdisk To Connected Airport Express Network?

Apr 25, 2010

I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.

Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.

My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.

For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.

The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.

OS X :: Slow Network - Airport Express To Extend The Network

Apr 21, 2010

I have a slow network issue. I'll try to make it as simple as possible.

The network to my living room was slow, so I added the Express to extend the network. When connected through the Express, with a Time Machine backup, I'm getting about 500K/sec transfer speeds. When I move the laptop away from the Express and close to the Extreme, the network works much faster, about 5MB/sec. I don't understand why the network is so much slower when using the Airport Express as a network extender. Is the speed difference normally that much? If it's not supposed to be, is there anything I can do?

Hardware :: Using G Network As Well As Airport Extreme N Network?

Jul 8, 2009

Here is my situation. I am a network newbie. I bought a Airport Extreme (2008 model without dual band & guest networking) and have it setup with my ADSL broadband modem. I bought it so I could use the high speed N to connect to my Apple TV. It replaced a Linksys WRT54G.

My concern is this. We have another laptop in the house which only has Wireless G. It is connected most of the time to our network, so I presume that it will be slowing the speed of my Extreme to G levels.

Can I connect my old Linksys G router somehow to my network to create a seperate Wireless G network to access the internet. The older laptop can be at G speeds and my Extreme network remaining at N speeds ?

Maybe an easier option is to buy a N USB adaptor for my laptop but I don't want to buy something if I can use my current equipment.
