I can't seem to get my airport express to extend the guest network from my new airport extreme. It will extend the private network but the guest network doesn't show up in the list under airport utility. Is there anyway to extend the internet only except to one computer which needs to share a printer back to the original extreme?

View 6 Replies View RelatedJust bought a new Airport Time Capsule 3TB for backup purposes and to use as the main router in my home (model number A1470 the latest tall one). I was originally using an AirPort Extreme (model number 1408 approx 6" square and 1' tall) for my main router.
I got the TC setup and putting out good wifi signal, but would like to take my Extreme and extend it off the TC to boost signal in other parts of my house, but having some difficulty. I searched the forums and found setup instructions to do this, but I get a message saying, "unexpected error. Try again." Well, tried again and still no luck.

I have an Airport Extreme (goes up to N) as my main router, and I'd like to extend my signal with a Linksys router that is a/b/g (no N support) and maybe an a/b/g Airport Express. Is this possible? Will I have to downgrade my network to G? Also, how do I go about doing this? My plan is to plug them into Ethernet spots throughout the house, but I don't want to have 3 different networks, so how do I make them wireless extenders as opposed to standalone routers?
Would it be worth it just to spring for a new Airport Express (that supports N)? If I do that, do I need to plug it into Ethernet to extend my signal, or will it be able to pick up the signal wirelessly and then extend it?
New here and new mac user all together. I have looked quite a bit for an answer to this question but have not found one that applies directly to my situation.
My dilemma is that my apartment complex has free (unsecured) wireless but currently with my macbook pro, I can not register the signal in my living room. I just got Airport Express with the idea of extending the signal to all areas of my apartment. However when I go to "Join current wireless network", the apartment's signal does not show up (two other networks do show up though they are password protected).
I have read here that certain routers are not compatible with Airport Express (is this true?) and I am wondering if that's a possibility here.
Is there a fix for this? Do I need access to the router?
i am trying to extend a network with an airport express but the airport express cannot get a valid IP address and flashes amber.
my setup is as follows: netgear router/modem which handles PPPoE connected via ethernet to time capsule which handles the wireless network.
time capsule is working fine and has a valid IP address but airport express doesn't.
i have checked 'allow this network to be extended' on the TC, and connection sharing is in bridge mode.
i wonder if someone could help me troubleshoot this
I have a Airport Extreme and I would like to extend my network with an airport express but not sure if the airport express is only extending the network if it needs to be plugged into a ethernet if it is only bouncing the network on. Or does it have to have a fixed ethernet wire in it.
View 8 Replies View RelatedI recently upgraded my Airport Extreme form the old "UFO looking" Airport to a the new Airport Extreme N and am having trouble extending the network using the older airport as a remote in WDS. I have followed both of the following articles without any success.[URL:...] I followed the 2nd doco (ap2124) up to point 6 and I followed the 1st doco (ap2045) from the start and applied the changes, but my older (ufo looking) airport extreme don't seem to connect to the newer Airport Extreme N. I contacted Apple support and after checking with the product specialist, they advised me that I couldn't mix the 2 devices and I would have to buy the Airport Express N and extend my network using the Express. my question is, has anyone extended their network by using 2 different Airport base stations?

I have a network with an existing router in place that connects to the internet, and provides DHCP for the network. I want to add (potentially many) Airport Extremes to this network to provide two basic functions:
1) Wireless access to the existing network over a large office area (preferably on the same subnet as the existing, wired network, with the current router [NOT the AEs] providing DHCP services) and
2) Guest network access such that users joining the guest network can access the internet, but NOT any of the addresses on the main network.
I can find no way to do this trivially. It seems that if I set the AEs to BRIDGE mode, the option to set up a guest network disappears (perhaps reasonably so, since the AE would need to be able to manage the address range for the two networks).
Is it possible to implement a similar function like Guest Networking on an older Airport Extreme router? I'm sharing the internet with housemates but would like to shield my own computers from the network. Is it possible without upgrading the router?

I loaded the config from my previous AirPort Extreme and everything seems to be working fine with the exception of the guest networking feature. When I have a guest attempting to log into the guest network, it displays the error: "connection failed". I am able to connect my iPhone(listed MAC in router) to the guest network just fine however, my "guest" laptop that has no MAC address in the router will not connect. It sounds like a MAC ACL issue. I currently have the "(default)" set to no access.

I'm interesting in picking one up because I've been looking for a good 802.11n router for awhile, and the simultaneous dual-band radios plus the guest networking feature are the real sellers for me. Both those features exist in part on other routers, but I'd have to put in a lot of work in a DD-WRT compatible router to get them both to work properly.
My question, though, is can both the dual-band radios and the guest networking feature be run simultaneously? It seems that from a hardware perspective, the easiest way to get a second network and SSID running would be to use the second radio, which precludes the dual-band feature. Does anyone have the new Airport Extreme yet? Can you run both at the same time?
Is there anyway to make a AirPort guest network closed using the guest network function of an AirPort Extreme Base Station?

I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.
Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.
My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.
For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.
The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.
Here is my situation. I am a network newbie. I bought a Airport Extreme (2008 model without dual band & guest networking) and have it setup with my ADSL broadband modem. I bought it so I could use the high speed N to connect to my Apple TV. It replaced a Linksys WRT54G.
My concern is this. We have another laptop in the house which only has Wireless G. It is connected most of the time to our network, so I presume that it will be slowing the speed of my Extreme to G levels.
Can I connect my old Linksys G router somehow to my network to create a seperate Wireless G network to access the internet. The older laptop can be at G speeds and my Extreme network remaining at N speeds ?
Maybe an easier option is to buy a N USB adaptor for my laptop but I don't want to buy something if I can use my current equipment.
I want to get an airport extreme base station to replace an old Belkin router that I use now.I have Virgin broadband and I currently connect three MBP laptops and an iphone via wifi and a Mac Pro and an Xbox 360 via ethernet to the Belkin, which is connected to the Virgin modem.The Mac Pro and one MBP also run Windows 7 using Bootcamp.I also have an old PC upstairs running windows xp that connects via wifi using a Belkin USB N adapter.All of this works fine now, but it's a bit slow due to the old router which is only pre-N.

After installation I put the card in, and after booting up I thought the card would be recognized. I was wrong. Any suggestions besides that the card might be bad, that I can do to fix this? The card works on other machines.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI recently replaced my aging linksys G router with an Airport extreme. I have an HP 2605dn printer connected to it via ethernet. When I set this up with the old router everything worked great, printer showed up in OSX and added with a couple of clicks. Now that I have moved to the airport I cannot find the printer at all from OSX on either my MacBook Pro with 10.6 or my Powerbook with 10.5. However all of the Windows 7 machines I have in the house see it and print fine. I feel like I'm missing something very simple and help would be amazing.

But my wife's pc laptop and my iphone are only G wireless and not N so when they are in use it slows the network way down. If I bought an airport express could I link them together on the same network (to share printer and HD on the extreme) and have one handle the N traffic and one handle the G traffic?

I just bought it today and a little bit confused coming from a Linksys.I have an HP Photosmart C4480 and setup the printing and it works with my MBP but when I try to add it for my sister's Windows XP laptop it can't find the printer whatsoever even with bonjour installed and all. View 2 Replies View RelatedI want to test the range of an AE base station at a theatre that I'm installing wi-fi for. I'm wi-fi challenged, so the AE was my choice when setting up my home network. I may need to extend the theatre's network with an Airport Express, but want to test the range of it with my AE base station from home. (Got that?) [oh, and it's a theatre I work for and am installing all sorts of fun goodies. I'm good with stuff but wifi makes me corky thatcher. -ed]Since I'm wi-fi challenged, will it totally mess up my settings on my home network if I try to use it at the theatre? If it will, then I'll just buy a fresh one for the theatre and see after that if I need an express. I'd just like to run to the apple store once, not twice

I know my IP number (it changes, but I'm switching to a static #). Is there a way I can access my network over the internet through the airport extreme? I have a mini-server device running on my network that utilizes port 80 and I'm sure there's some way to read that over the internet. (if I'm using the wireless network, I use address http://10.0.1.3/webpage.html to view) Is there a way to view that address from the internet? And lastly, if am I opening up a can of security worms if I try this?

Is there anything that needs to be set on the AirPort for this to work?
