OS X Server :: Making Videos Available On Closed Network?
Aug 26, 2006
I'm working on a project involving large video files (100 mb or so) and I need to make these available on the web somehow. They will be available only over a closed network (a school), and I'm thinking of either embedding them in a web page, or using Quicktime Streaming server. If the internet connection is fast (which it is in this situation) would either solution work fine? Or would one load faster than the other?

I know theres tons of utilities out there for this but none seem to work. I have an old Tibook running 10.5.8 that I want to use as a webserver. I can vnc to it and I wont even need to do it that much so I just want the ethernet and power plugged into it. No KB/Mouse! I've tried sleepless, InsomniaX, and caffeine but the same result with each. I close the lid and it goes to sleep.

How do you get a Windows machine running Vista to recognize a closed/hidden network? I have a hidden network that only works with certain MAC addy's, and I added the MAC addy of the Vista machine, but it can't see it / join up. I found something online that said you had to go into some old DOS interface to do it, tried that but it still didn't work. Any advice or experience with this?

I have a MacPro 2008 2.8 and am having weird noises from the Ram. I have 2x1GB on the top A riser and 2x4GB on the Bottom riser (not apple). Whilst watching youtube or any sort of streaming video the ram makes noises similar to a cricket. I first thought it was the hard drive seeking but I took that out (1TB WD Caviar Black) and the sound was still there. I then thought it was the GPU. Then I took out my aftermarket RAM and bingo, sound was gone. So does you RAM or RAM in general make any sort of noises?

I was wondering if I can join videos on a Mac? I know Quicktime can, but the resulting video isn't really smooth. I tried doing this on iMovie, but I don't like the black outline (is there a way to get rid of it then?) and it doesn't preserve its original quality (not even that close x_X). My second question is, is there a program that allows me to create screencaps. Preferably free programs please.

Is there anyway to make a AirPort guest network closed using the guest network function of an AirPort Extreme Base Station?
It seems to be like the guest network is always visible, even if the primary network is closed.

I have a house that is not ideal for wifi. In particular, my office is an extension off the kitchen which has a solid brick wall between it and the rest of the house. Through 2 airport extremes, i get great wireless N signal everywhere in the house except this office. So, i added a 'N' airport express at the base of the stairs to this office and 'extended' the network.
So, i have 2 macbook pros up here. One is running on batteries, sitting on my desk, lid open. It is showing a rate of 108, signal -66 and noise -88 in the advanced wireless clients section of the airport express which it is getting it's signal from.
The next is closed and connected to a LED 24" cinema display. It is right next to the other MBP. It is showing a rate of 41, signal -80 and noise -93.
Why such a huge difference? Would it be because the lid is closed, it is connected to the display or a faulty macbook?

I'm running an Intego X6 full scan right now, but something is amiss:
1. Activity Monitor shows 19 packets in/sec, 22 packets out/sec, currently at 26024 packets in and 24996 out since rebooting maybe 10 minutes ago)
2. iStat shows 4k in/out per sec
3. My router's activity light incessantly blinks
4. My router won't light up at the initial login, so the issue only happens with my current user account
When disabling all internet activity through Intego's firewall, my router also stops. Amusingly, Activity Monitor continues to show packets being sent and received. (I didn't see anything in Activity Monitor that would show me which process(es) are using the network as well...)
I can't seem to find any PID or process names out of the ordinary, but usually there should be no activity when there's no activity.
I do keep OS X updated as often as possible, but that doesn't mean something wicked this way comes...
Are there apps I can use that will tell me what process is sending these mystery packets?

I'd like to setup a network account on Lion Server and allow that account to VPN in to my server. But I want this account to have limited access to my LAN, similar to how the stovepiped "Guest Network" works with Airport Extremes. I don't see any way to assign specific network accounts specific IP ranges outside the normal, say, 10.0.1/24. Is there even any way to assign a specific account something in the range, say, 10.0.2/24? Any way to further limit network access for Lion Server VPN sessions?

Right now I have a 500gb Time Capsule (single band) in one room being extended by an Airport Extreme (N-mode, single band) in another. If you were picturing a number line, the TC would be at 0, the AE would be at 5, and I sit at 10.
I always have a full signal to the AE, but every now and then, my internet stops connecting. So in other words, the actual wifi signal itself is fine, it's the internet.
So I keep my Airport Utility open to troubleshoot this, and I notice that when internet goes out, Airport Utility no longer shows the TC on the lefthand side where it lists the devices, leading me to believe that for a moment, the two lose connection of each other.

I'm running Symantec Backup Agent on our mac osx server. I start the agent in the terminal (./agent.be). It returns a notification that it started the service, however, it doesn't return to the prompt. Closing the terminal gives a warning that the process will be closed if the terminal is closed. Closing it does kill the process. Ctrl+c to return to the prompt also kills the process. So it's as if once the process is started in the terminal, nothing can be altered.
I am not much of a mac guy so please forgive me if this is a stupid question.
Anyone have any advice on how to handle this so the process is ALWAYS running?

I have an 13" MBP that I ordered new in April, 2012. It is running Lion. I have an external monitor that is capable of 1440x900 resolution. I have an external keyboard and trackpad hooked up, and I like to close my MBP up and stick it in a BookArc. I want to be able to have the internal display disabled and to have the MBP only allow me to put windows on the external display, so long as the lid is closed. I also want to be sure that I am taking advantage of the resolutions available on my external monitor, which are higher than those supported by the internal display (specifically 1440x900).
This doesn't seem to work because I either have to allow the MBP to continue to draw my desktop across both screens (internal and external), OR use the "mirror displays" mode, which restricts my resolution of my external monitor. This means I either forgoe the additional resolution benefits of my external monitor, or I end up with windows that fall off-the-cliff, so to speak, because they are drawn in the portion of the desktop that would be shown on my internal display (which is closed).
I've read the community support pages on using the MBP with an external monitor, most relevantly, this page. It simply recommends using the "mirror displays" option. However, this option, as I mentioned above, doesn't allow me to make use of the additional resolution, and my external display looks bad. how to keep the 13" MBP in closed clamshell position, with the internal display disabled, and use my external monitor at resolutions higher than those allowed by the 13" MBP but which are available to my external monitor when not in "mirror displays" mode?

I use my laptop many times throughout the day, and due to classes, and studying at friends' houses, etc., I connect on average to 3 different networks a day. All of my music for iTunes is stored on a server at my house, and it easily auto connects at login when I am there. I was wondering if there was a script, or maybe even an application that would allow my laptop to only attempt to auto connect to the server when on my home network.
Obviously this isn't a dire issue, I just think it would add a little convenience to my life

I am in charge of a building level network at a primary (k-2) school. The problem I am having with our computer labs is that the student logons are extremely slow. The lab is running Emacs with 1.25 G4. 512 DDR, and Mac OSX 10.4.7 Appletalk, Bonjour, and LDAPv3 are enabled in Directory Access. They are also running DHCP for their IP. The server is a Xserv running Mac OSX Server 10.4.7 with 2 ghz G5 and 512 ddr.
I recently upgraded from 10.3.9 to 10.4.7 on the server. There is one drive that maps on logon. The dock, System Preferences, and logon are managed for the students in Workgroup Manager. They are all directly connected to 10/100 switch my office/server room/switch closet. Dose anyone know a way I can make the network logons faster? It is taking almost 2 to 3 minutes for an average student to load. The funny thing is it is very sporadic. Sometimes they will get on quick and all is well. Some times it tells me their home folder is missing or the dock has all kinds of stuff its not supposed to have. Sometimes they cant even logon! It dose not seem to be a specific computer. Its random on what logon times or if the student account will work.

I have just purchased my first mac (Mini Server w/ quad i7) the other week. I am having serious troubles connecting it to the internet at my work or uni networks. The mini works just fine at home with a simple connection to the modem/router. But at uni there is a small infrastructure and proxy, and at work there is a more complicated setup also (although the firewall isn't blocking any ports or normal internet traffic. There also isn't any MAC address filtering on any of the networks). I have tried both ethernet and WiFi, with no success.
Mac mini obtains local IP, can successfully contact the DNS. Pinging locally to the gateway fails (so so does pinging google, or external addresses). traceroute also fails internally. But that's about as far as I can go on either work or uni networks.
I've fiddled around with all settings i can find under 'Advanced' in the network options. But again nothing.
It is a completely fresh install of OSX 10.7.3, no 3rd part apps or software have been installed yet (this is due to not having an internet connection).
I am COMPLETELY new to mac software - other than knowing the dashboard is down the bottom, the taskbar is up the top and the minimizing/closing is in the top left corner. I am in the 3rd year of my IT degree at uni, so I know some generic networking troubleshooting, but that's about all.

I have an Open Directory Master running on my 10.7.3 Server machine, and I created network account server entry in "Users & Groups -> Login Options" which is non-functional ("This server is not responding") using the loop back 127.0.0.1 and entering the diradmin credentials.
I have created another entry which is functional, and I can access my network accounts, but I cannot delete the original entry. The minus key is greyed out and I can't work out how to unbind.

last month our Xserve G5 with Leopard Server which controlled user accounts in our computer labs died. We replaced it with a Mac mini server (that includes Lion Server) –by the way, this is the first server that I ever setup–.During initial configuration, the server was fully updated to Lion server 10.7.3, and stablished as an OD Master. I didn't import anything from the old server, so all accounts and groups and preferences and everything have been defined from scratch.Everything was working good until I finish the setup and try to connect from one of our Leopard client machines. I configure that machine with Directory Utility with settings from the server, and the server responds just fine, the client sets everything up automatically for authentication and contacts. Everything seems to be normal until I log out and try to connect with one of the network accounts. The account will not login, the login window just shakes and does nothing. Odd enough, the login window tells that network accounts are available (captures are in Spanish). When I login again as a local admin account, I check Directory Utility and when I look at the LDAP configuration, in the search & maps tab of the window, I find these two red registers (UserAuthenticationData and OLCLDIFConfig). I don't know if this is related to the problem, but this is where I get stuck and don't know where else to go.

Our new Lion Server has a static IP Address pointed to over the internet by our registrar's zone file. Planning the Lion Server installation process with the intent of hosting Web, Mail and Open Directory services to a small number of users who are nearly all located off-site. I do also want Lion Server to be a caching DNS Server and DHCP authority on the local network to replace what dnsmasq does on our current Linux server.
I am looking forward to offloading some of the lower level Linux administration tasks and putting myself in the hands of the Lion Server Setup Assistant and Server App :-) but at the same time don't understand some of its assumptions and fear having to spend a lot of time experimenting and re-installing.
So, specifically, I want the Server App to know that my Lion Server has a "Host Name for the Internet" but that the DNS it sets up will not be the DNS for my zone - I will be managing that through my registrar's interfaces.
Second problem is my fnot understanding what name space devices on the local network will / should use. e.g. The Linux server will be available for backups etc on the local intranet (and optionally have a static ip address on the Internet) but MacBooks, PCs, iPads and iPhones will be served ip addresses by the Lion Server's DHCP. So will / should these dynamic devices have their machine names fully qualified by our domain name with RFC 1918 style ip addresses or something like .local? How do I tell this to Lion's Server App / Setup Assistant? How easy is it to update these initial settings later?

Can't SSH to server on port 22 from home network
When I try to connect to a remote server over SSH from my home network, I get this error:
ssh: connect to host XXXXX.com port 22: Operation timed out
I can't connect to any servers on port 22. Other networking services (like HTTP) are working fine. Also, I can connect to the SSH servers on port 22 from other networks using this same machine.
I suspect it's a problem with my Airport configuration. What should I do?
