Hardware :: AirPort Data Rates On WDS Network
Mar 19, 2010
My Airport Extreme and Airport Express are set up on a WDS network. Similar to what I read here [URL]. My PowerBook G4 gets a data rate of only 11-36. Is that normal? What range should I be shooting for? Why does it fluctuate? I looked in System Profiler but didn't see anything to indicate the capabilities of the Airport Card in terms of data rate...

I have an Airport Extreme, with two USB hard drives connected to it. The Airport Extreme shares these disks to my wireless network via Airport Disks.
Upstairs I have an Airport Express, that wirelessly connects to my Airport Extreme downstairs, and extends the wireless network so I get a good wireless reception upstairs.
My problem is, that it does not seem like me Airport Express does a good job of forwarding my 2 USB Airport Disks to the extended wireless network upstairs.
For example, when I use the AirVideo iPhone app to stream video from my USB Airport Disks I get a server connection error when I go upstairs and the iPad/iPhone switches to the Airport Express networks. I cannot reconnect as long as it is on the Airport Express network. If I turn the airport Express off, and thus switch to the poor wireless reception from the Airport Extreme, I can connect to the USB Airport disks again.
The Airport Express is connected to the Airport Extreme in bridged mode.

I have a slow network issue. I'll try to make it as simple as possible.
1 MacBook Pro
1 Airport Extreme
1 Airport Express to Extend the Network
The network to my living room was slow, so I added the Express to extend the network. When connected through the Express, with a Time Machine backup, I'm getting about 500K/sec transfer speeds. When I move the laptop away from the Express and close to the Extreme, the network works much faster, about 5MB/sec. I don't understand why the network is so much slower when using the Airport Express as a network extender. Is the speed difference normally that much? If it's not supposed to be, is there anything I can do?

Here is my situation. I am a network newbie. I bought a Airport Extreme (2008 model without dual band & guest networking) and have it setup with my ADSL broadband modem. I bought it so I could use the high speed N to connect to my Apple TV. It replaced a Linksys WRT54G.
My concern is this. We have another laptop in the house which only has Wireless G. It is connected most of the time to our network, so I presume that it will be slowing the speed of my Extreme to G levels.
Can I connect my old Linksys G router somehow to my network to create a seperate Wireless G network to access the internet. The older laptop can be at G speeds and my Extreme network remaining at N speeds ?
Maybe an easier option is to buy a N USB adaptor for my laptop but I don't want to buy something if I can use my current equipment.

I've got a mid 2009 MBP 2.66 and maye around 2 weeks ago I started ripping my DVDs with handbrake and I was getting like 100 fps... Now however I'm only getting 30 or less sometimes and it's only using 38% of the CPU whereas before it was using like 90-95%. I haven't changed anything.

Has anyone tried running L4D2 in BootCamp? I was thinking about taking a punt on the original then I noticed that 2 was out. My Macbook runs Bioshock at medium settings, not the highest of frame rates but it's perfectly playable, but I'm not sure if it'll be able to handle L4D2. (Core2Duo 2ghz, 4gb DDR3, Nvidia9400M, XP 32-bit sp3).

I have a "My book Pro" 250 GB external hard drive spinning at 7200 rpm. This thing is dog slow. It takes about 5 to 10 seconds to copy about 2 megabytes. I have another drive that copies about 160 megabytes in about 5 seconds. I called Western Digital (the maker of the "My Book Pro") and they said that USB 2.0 transfer rates are about 2 MB a second! That is not true but he insisted. My question to you all is how can i win this argument with them? Do you know a formula that would give me real world numbers. In other words how to translate 480 megabits (the USB 2.0 transfer spec) into megabytes? Ive searched the net and cant find anything. Its messed up cause both drives have basically the same specs. Ive even tried reformatting to every possibility, ive switched cables from the fast drive to the slow drive. Nothings working. Im gonna call WD back tomorrow but i wanted a way to talk about what could honestly be expected from USB 2.0. I just cant believe that USB 2.0 tops out at 2MB a second. And to top it all off, todays call ended up with me getting disconnected so i called back and guess what, they were closed...that guys a DOUCHE. I really cant put my faith into Western Digital after this. Are there drives that are geared more towards professionals seeking performance and reliability?

I've got a Satallite dish system and two routers. I have router B plugged into Router A. Router b Everything is disabled, DNS, Gateway, **** like that, including DHCP. Router A has DHCP enabled, MAC Address Filtering, and DNS and Gateways for the dish system entered. I'm running this setup for my little out post in Iraq. The dish is plugged into the "uplink" port in back of the router, Both Linksys, btw. So I've got 30 people or so on this router, and some one, i fear is passing alot of crap and hogging all the network bandwidth. I suspect SpyWare/Adware of Virus problem on one or two machines. Is there anyway to setup my Mac or a Windows Machine to accept all the data through a network card, and then pass that data up to the satallite dish? I just need to see who's sending all this data and the Linksys logs are crap.

I am wondering if I am getting a good transfer rate on my time capsule. (Using leopard). If I alt (option) click on the airport icon on the top of the screen, I can get details to my network. One of the details is transfer. I am assuming this is the speed of my network. Do you know what this is measured in? When I have the time capsule as a G router I get a transfer of 130. When I have the TC as an N router, I get a transfer of 200 - 264. Can anyone tell me if these numbers are good, or do I need to do something to get the numbers closer to where they should be.

I have recently upgraded my wireless network to N+ using a Belkin Modem Router. Security is WPA2-PSK, and MAC access is disabled. All MacBooks (Leopard & Tiger), PCs (XP) and iphones connect without any problem, however my daughter's PowerBook G4 running OS X 10.4.11, and with the most recent Airport software, can't connect to the network. The password prompt when selecting the network only allows for entering a WEP password.

My problems are getting bigger and bigger:
1. I could not activate my airport card after installing 10.6
2. I erased all data in system configuration as other threads told me
[URL]
3. Then my MB said that there is no airport card installed (but it is)
4. After that I tried to reinstall 10.6 but DVD stopped loading and said it interrupted
5. Now Im even not able to open network preferences! It loads, and loads, and loads...
6. I installed 10.6.1 but nothing happened
I feel like snow leopard (and my attempt to clear the situation) killed network on my MB-Pro.

I'm running the latest iStat Menus (2.0) on Snow Leopard 10.6.2. All the displayed data shows just fine with the exception of the Network (bandwidth) menu. The graph does not reflect bandwidth being used and the "KB/s" displays a constant "0.0KB/s." I've tried rebooting and I've also tried manually selecting "Airport" in the General Settings in iStat Menus' Preference Pane.
Does anyone know how to fix this?
(iStat Pro, the widget version of this program, displays the bandwidth data though.)

I have an Airport Extreme (goes up to N) as my main router, and I'd like to extend my signal with a Linksys router that is a/b/g (no N support) and maybe an a/b/g Airport Express. Is this possible? Will I have to downgrade my network to G? Also, how do I go about doing this? My plan is to plug them into Ethernet spots throughout the house, but I don't want to have 3 different networks, so how do I make them wireless extenders as opposed to standalone routers?
Would it be worth it just to spring for a new Airport Express (that supports N)? If I do that, do I need to plug it into Ethernet to extend my signal, or will it be able to pick up the signal wirelessly and then extend it?

I recently got a PowerPC G4 from a family member and reinstalled Mac OS X 10.5. I did this without the Airport Extreme card installed. After installation I put the card in, and after booting up I thought the card would be recognized. I was wrong. Any suggestions besides that the card might be bad, that I can do to fix this? The card works on other machines.

Back when I did this last time I found some detailed instructions, but of course I didn't bookmark them. I now changed the channel and now I lost the connection to the second one, which is only used for music.
I have a WPA/WPA2 password and an restricted access list.
We're on Leopard.

i'm using a MacBook Pro and Ableton Live 8, for those familiar... I have to create an ad-hoc network to get some apps like Liine apps working with my other Apple devices. Liine has some very clear and simple videos, as some i saw on Youtube. The thing is, for some reason, i don't have the AirPort option in my settings. I downloaded AirPort Utility 6.0, but it doesn't find a network or i don't know what.

Lately I've been noticing that my Airport disconnects about every 10 - 15 mins or so and then reconnects after it searches for a network, which is mine. 99% of the time I'm sitting right in front of my router. I've reset the router, rebooted, reset my pram, and the problem still persists. This issue doesn't occur on my girlfriends HP.
