MacBook Pro :: Will Setting Up A Dual Network Speed Up Transfer Rates
May 6, 2012I have 3 macbookpros connected to a mini mac server via ethernet. I have the cables and hub to set up a firewire network. I'm wondering if having two networks will increase my connection speed?

Oct 30, 2009I have a "My book Pro" 250 GB external hard drive spinning at 7200 rpm. This thing is dog slow. It takes about 5 to 10 seconds to copy about 2 megabytes. I have another drive that copies about 160 megabytes in about 5 seconds. I called Western Digital (the maker of the "My Book Pro") and they said that USB 2.0 transfer rates are about 2 MB a second! That is not true but he insisted. My question to you all is how can i win this argument with them? Do you know a formula that would give me real world numbers. In other words how to translate 480 megabits (the USB 2.0 transfer spec) into megabytes? Ive searched the net and cant find anything. Its messed up cause both drives have basically the same specs. Ive even tried reformatting to every possibility, ive switched cables from the fast drive to the slow drive. Nothings working. Im gonna call WD back tomorrow but i wanted a way to talk about what could honestly be expected from USB 2.0. I just cant believe that USB 2.0 tops out at 2MB a second. And to top it all off, todays call ended up with me getting disconnected so i called back and guess what, they were closed...that guys a DOUCHE. I really cant put my faith into Western Digital after this. Are there drives that are geared more towards professionals seeking performance and reliability?

May 19, 2010Has anyone come across any Firewire memory keys? (Similar to the USB Keys we have now days). Firewire has a much higher transfer rate than USB 2.0, so I was wondering if any company made the firewire memory keys. I did a quick google search but didn't come up with anything recent. Feb 5, 2012I am trying to transfer files applications data etc from an intel iMac i5 running OS X 10.6.8 to a Macbook Pro i7 running OS X 10.7.3 and having trouble with migration assistant. When I restart the iMac holding the T key it just opens to the usual desktop. If I start up holding the T key I get the grey screen with the firewire,thunderbold icon. Either way the Macbook does not seem to recognise the iMac in the migration assistant so I cannot proceed with file transfer. I have tried the above with different cables, just in case it was the cable.

Nov 1, 2010I need to buy a firewire cable so I can transfer photos and my itunes library from my older macbook to my new imac. I want to buy the cable from monoprice but I am confused by the number of options I have when searching.
I get results that have 4, 6, and 9 pin options. Do I need the 9 to 9 pin cable? 6 to 6 pin? Some other combination? My macbook is around 4 years old, pre-leopard, osx 10.4.x. The iMac is brand new.

So i updated both computers ticked the sharing boxes and following the on screen instructions plugged in the the firewire lead and transfered the files etc. I then disconnected and had a look through the mac book i can find the files but it says i do not have sufficient access privileges what am i doing wrong ?

Nov 30, 2008My external drives transfer very slowly on my MacPro. I've been searching for answers and have turned up very little.
Just to make a note, I measured my disk speeds with both AJA System Test and copying files between drives and reading the Disk Activity in Activity Monitor.
I have 3 external drives, all MyBook Premium or Professional, 1x 500GB, 1x 1TB and 2x 1TB in RAID 0. I had them on Firewire 400 and the RAID 0 2TB one on Firewire 800. My transfers on FW were all around 24MB/sec on all drives (much less than what I should be getting with FW400). I then read somewhere that the FW bus on the MacPro uses the slowest speed connected for all FW connections. So I unplugged everything but the FW800 Raid 0 drive and my transfer rate jumped to 40-60MB/sec. This is much better, but still about half or so of what I expect it should be producing from an external RAID 0 setup.
To keep my FW800 backup drive faster, I've plugged the other two into USB2.0. The transfer speeds on both drives are now hideous, around 10-15MB/sec. This is so slow, but I'm not sure what to try to fix my speeds.
The HD's in the external drives are all 7200rpm, and all should be transferring at a higher rate. Do you have any suggestions or ideas? Ideally I'd like to get everything transferring at rates they should be transferring at, but I'll settle with my current FW800 speed of 40-60MB/sec if I can get my other two drives transferring at a non-snail pace.
Is this a common issue? I can't believe I'm the only one plugging multiple external hard drives into their Mac Pro. I hope someone has a fix or solution for this. I'm all ears!

OS X :: Using Firewire To Transfer Filers / Turn On File Sharing For Other Computer On Network?
Dec 24, 2009Is there anyway to ensure that when two Macs are File Sharing with Firewire that they use that connection rather than the network connection? Anytime I connect I can't tell how I'm connected until I try to transfer a file and it says it'll take fifteen minutes. If I turn off my airport it'll then use the firewire and transfer in seconds. Is there anyway around having to disable wifi to get it to use the wire?
Also, how do I turn on file sharing for just one other Mac? I just want to be able to share the files on the Mini with the MBP, not any other computer on the network.

Dec 29, 2009I wanted to transfer his iTunes library and few pics and files but I had the wrong firewire cable so I went ahead and setup his MBP for him. I now have the correct cable and need to use migration asst. to transfer the iTunes library and files. I tried once but ran into problems. I am transferring from an iMac running Leopard that has 4 user accts. The problem I had is that it tried to transfer all accounts! All I want is the iTunes library from his account and a few folders from his desktop. What do I select when prompted during the migration? Would it be easier to erase the hard drive and reinstall SNL from the cd and use migration asst. from the beginning? I have installed MS Office 08 and I can reinstall that as well.

Feb 16, 2009I currently have my second MBP that I got from Macmall and both in a matter of two weeks have had similar issues. The first I managed to get returned and replaced, that is a seperate and complicated story in and of itself. This particular issue started with a boot up sequence that was taking about 5-6 mins. After going through the drill with Applecare thought I could restore using Time Machine. That's when I found out that the FW400 port no longer worked to power my Oyen Digital 250G FW drive. Any thoughts as to what might be the problem? This is my second MBP and Oyen Digital FW drive. I had them both replaced!

It has a switchable port controller, one has a USB2 and eSATA and the other has two FireWire 400 ports [URL].
Now, on the FW controller it says "Dual FireWire 400".
What is Dual FireWire 400? And does it implicate that I can use both ports together somehow and get FW800 by that?

MacBook Pro :: Transfer Files To External HD -- Transfer Starts But Doesn't Complete
Feb 29, 2012I have a 2011 Macbook Pro and an older (5 year old) Western Digital external hard drive. I have always used this hard drive for both mac and windows. Recently, however, whenever I go to transfer a file from the mac to the WD hard drive, the little transfer window pops up and it appears to initiate the transfer. However, it never fully starts it. It appears to "get stuck" in that initiating stage, showing zero of 3.16 gb transferred and shows an unknown transfer time. This happens no matter how long I leave it open. Again, I have used this external hard drive with my macs for the past 5 years without any problems until now. I haven't moved or modified the WD hard drive

Aug 4, 2009i just thought it was compatible because it said it was made for the mac and i really wanted to use my surround sound system. So my dilemma is that it came with a firewire 400 cable and I have a firewire 800 port on my mac mini which i bought recently. I've looked for some adapters and I saw one that said it accepts male firewire 400 6 pin and at the other end is a 9 pin firewire 800. it says its designed to connect your firewire 400 cable so it can be used in firewire 800 ports for newer macs. I'm not 100 percent sure what all that means and I didn't want to go buy something without being sure that's what I need.
