Desktops :: What Is Best Start Up And Shut Down Time...
Nov 27, 2009
I am using Mac 0S X Leopard, mac mini and facing the following problem:
1) System is taking too long time(10 - 15 min ) for start up and shut down.
2) It is asking every time to set up the current time as and when the system starts every time.
3) When accesing the system preferences , it gets crashed when using index Spotlight.
4) Finder gets relaunched itself for every 60-90 seconds when accessing folder Applications or Utilities etc..
5) The Spotlight is indexing itself, When i tried to stop the indexing of the spotlight using system preference, it gets crashed.
My system got its logic board replaced by the apple once.

I have an Intel Imac G5 2.66 gHz 2 core duo running 10.6.3. I am unable to get it shut down or sleep. Choosing either results in the display blacking out, the fans run for about 1 second and then everything come back on as if nothing has happened. I've reset the Pram and Vram, disconnected all USB and Firewire devices, tried it with and without file sharing and Airport operating. A 'hard' shutdown with the power button works fine. I have checked for any firmware updates but mine is fine. This happened once before and clearing out some files from deleted apps cured the problem but it's back now.

Something bad going on here. Dead hard drive(?)
Current status is...Cannot turn on, screen is dark. Blue light on power button stays on. Can't restart after holding it down...Red light inside box is on. Read that it might be air deflector trouble, but that's not it. Opened box removed plastic and returned it...another red light lit , then turned off. 1st red light stays on.
Before the above began, a restart would end up in a hang at the end of the progress bar. Ran Disk Util from Install CD which showed errors: "Volume Chk failed...HFS Volume needs repair". Ran FSCK whick said it fixed all. Ran Disk Warrior afterward b/c still would hang at startup. Says all now OK...but NOT! Have tried saving files thru Disk Warrior...but now, as per above, cannot get it to start up. Or turn off...
Would like to get it lit to save any additional files if drive is near the end...

I'm new here, but not new to the Mac world. I own an intel iMac and while I was attempting to restart it on Sunday night it went into a gray screen with the box asking me to shut and restart in several languages. I did and still get stuck on that page. I did a PRAM reset and that didn't work. So I used my start up disk to get to the disk utility and my HD is fine so I used an external drive to install the OS on it and reboot from and reinstalled from TimeMachine (only problem is the last time I backed up was 5 months ago)Again I checked my internal drive and everything seems okay, but I cannot reboot from it. BTW, I've OS 10.6.2,

My Mac attempts to start up and automatically shuts down on it's own. It continues to start and stop for several minutes and finally boots up. Once it's up it works OK. I've had it in to the Mac store and they tell me it's probably the power supply, but after leaving it on all weekend it seemed to work OK so they didn't do anything. After I brought it home it is still acting in the same way. It's only on trying to start up that it cycles through the start - stop action. Once I turn it off it's the same problem on trying to start again. Does this sound like a power supply problem?

I have a 20" Intel based iMac (model A1224) running Snow Leopard. It is just over a year old and only had the original Apple keyboard and mouse plugged into it. Today when I tried to start it I got only a blank gray screen. I tried all the keyboard combo start-up suggestions in the Apple help screens, unplugging/replugging everything, and booting with the Original disk and the Snow Leopard disk. A couple of those attempts produced a minute of the gray apple logo screen, then back to blank. While the disks were in it did sound like it was trying to read them, but spit out the disks after about 5 minutes.

I have an iMac G5 iSight. When the power button is pressed there is no sound and a white light flashes, but nothing else happens. I tried the power reset method and replaced the power supply, but the same thing happens. The white light just keeps flashing.

I've had my 13" macbook (running SL) for almost 2 years now (I believe) but recently it has started to act rather oddly. On startup it used to take probably 20 seconds or so while now it can take upwards of 3 minutes just to get to the desktop. I have added a few newer programs on startup but this time is just from the apple screen to the desktop, not counting the time for the startup items.
Also, the more annoying issue, when shutting down my macbook will sit at just the desktop (no icons) for several seconds before going to a blank screen for sometimes several minutes. Sometimes the circular loading thing (the one that is used when starting up) appears and when it does I'm forced to do a manual shutdown (holding the power button) because it refuses to shut down. My battery has also been dying easier and taking longer to charge so could it have something to do with the battery?

Yesterday my macbook start shutting down and booting up slowly. It used to work so quickly, and now it's taking much longer. The only thing I did was install a printer before it happened. Then when the problem began I uninstalled the printer with the uninstaller that it came with. I thought maybe that was the issue, but uninstalling it didn't seem to make a difference. I checked in the preferences to make sure it is starting up with the hard drive and it is. I'm not sure what else to do. It's not a huge issue, but it is a difference and the fact that it's only about a month old worries me. I do have to add that even though it's slower than it was just 24 hours ago, it's faster than my Dell PC ever was

For the past months or so, my machine takes about 40 seconds to start-up and shut-down. And thats after that little "spinning wheel appears on the monitor, which takes about 10 to 15 seconds for an image to appear. In the past, it took less than half that amount of time. I've run Macs "Drive Genius" and "Disk Utilities" from the install DVD several times to no avail. Can someone suggest how to at least cut this time down and back to normal. Its really a drag waiting for this "wheel" to stop spinning, which seems like

I have a new 09' 20" iMac Core Duo 2.66 with Snow Leopard.
Shut Down: = 7 Seconds. Tried 4 times, same result.
Start Up: 42-44 seconds to Login Screen
Login To Desktop fully loaded: = 6 Seconds
I am not impressed by the Start up or Login. I believe I clocked Leopard at the exact same speeds.
Overall I am not noticing much difference in anything.

I have added all of the updates and patches but the problem continues. It started with one application and now it's happening to others where they shut down suddenly at start-up and have to be restared and the windows restored. It's a brand new computer and wasn't doing this initially.

My wife did an improper shut down by holding the power key while something was working on it. She is running mavericks on the system. Now it will start to boot and shut down when progress bar gets half way. Disk utility says it can not fix problems, and when I try to reinstall mavericks from disk utility, it either says hd is locked, or it won't show me hd.
We have no system disk, so how can I fix this?

In bootcamp I got all the way to the part where I have to enter in my windows activation code during the windows installation. I just realized however that the code I have is wrong, and I can only get it from the guy I bought the copy from tomorrow. My question is, can I just shut down my laptop and start from the partition with no problems once I have the code?

Trying to restore newly replaced harddrive from external Time Machine backup to iMac. Computer was reset as new machine at repair shop. I use Time Machine for backing up my iMac hard drive I am into photography and have a large number of photo files that take up a lot of space. The originals I burn to a DVD but the pictures I put on an external hard drive 1 tb so they are readily accessible. Is there any way I can use Time Machine to automatically back up this hard drive onto another external along with my iMac hard drive, or do I need to store the files in duplicate manually on 2 different external hard drives?

For some reason, my Mac Pro wants to shut down all the time. Every 10 mins or so the message, "Do you want to shut down etc. etc." comes up with the usual options of Restart/Sleep//ShutDown or Cancel. I click on cancel and it goes away for 10 mins, sometimes less, sometimes more.
No idea what's causing this at all. I normally keep it turned on all the time but I went away for the weekend so I shut everything down in the office - I know it got pretty cold in there (maybe even freezing) so I'm worried I've done some damage due to the cold?
Nothing has been installed but I have no idea where to check or what to do now. It's my main computer - I use it for work all the time and would be at a loss if I needed to send it away so I'm hoping someone will have heard of this and have a solution
I;ve searched around a lot and all I can see is people having trouble to get their macbook's to shut down - this is the other way around!
Oh, Mac Pro, 4 quad intel, 4gb ram I think and 750gb hard drive. The power is connected to a UPS but that doesn't seem at fault.
Update:
It seems to be only doing it when I'm away for a while - maybe when it's trying to sleep or shut down the hard drive? I did have it set to Never for going to sleep and I have changed that last night so it's not the Sleep side of things. I will try unticking the Put the hard disk to sleep now and see if that makes a difference. I also see the option "Allow power button to sleep the computer" so if the previous attempt doesn't work I'll try that - I suppose that will identify whether it's the power button or not

Every time that I unplug my MacBook it immediately shuts off. I have read similar stories but there is no black or red "x" on my battery icon. I have tried to take the battery out and put it back in but it didn't work. The light on the plug in is green and I'm not sure what is wrong.
