Is there a way to move the Apple Mail folder someplace else? I have a bunch of archived mail (mbox) on an external drive and I want to access them but I don't know how unless I drag them to my Library folder.

The reason I want to move my Mail folder out of the home directory is because I plan to have a SSD as my boot drive and the home directory is on the boot drive, correct? "Moving the Apple Mail folder to your data volume".
This trick lets you move your Mail folder out of your home directory onto your data volume. I've used this technique for years so that I can forget about having to back up my home directory (default location for Apple Mail) and simply back up my one data volume: Master. The same trick can be used for any similarly irritating program that insists on storing its data in your home directory, rather than giving you a choice (a few programs are too brain-dead for this to work). Programs like iTunes let you choose where to put your music; use that option.
Your Apple Mail folder is in the Library folder of your home directory. The trick requires starting Terminal. If that makes you uncomfortable, stop here! You are going to make a symbolic link.
0. Quit Apple Mail, and make a backup of your mail folder.
1. Copy the Mail folder to the top level of your data drive (or elsewhere, then modify step 3 appropriately).
2. Rename the original mail folder to Mail.old as an additional backup.
3. Start a Terminal window and type:
ln -s /Volumes/Master/Mail Library/Mail
This makes a symbolic link to the folder Mail on the volume Master (type the name of your volume, and use quotes around it if the volume name contains a space character). The resulting file Library/Mail is a tiny file that says "look over there on /Volumes/Master/Mail instead". From here on out Apple Mail won't know the difference! Launch Apple Mail and verify that it worked. If you encounter problems, simply copy your backup back into place."
I would like to create an "On My Mac" folder within my Sent folder in Apple Mail. Can I do this?
The new "On My Mac" folder would be a nice place to where I could move some of my old outgoing emails, which currently reside in my IMAP-based Sent folders and hence take quota space.
I'm fairly new to Apple Mail and what not. So I'm going to refer to what I used to do on my PC to handle some important email's that I received. This was while I was using the built in Windows Mail program. What I want to do and use to do is. While in the mail program I created an "Important" folder for the mail program and I would move important emails that I did not want lingering in my inbox and that I didn't want to delete or anything. Is there some way to create folders in Apple Mail to save some important emails like this? I have 3 email accounts in Apple Mail [Gmail, MobileMe, & Comcast POP].

I can do this easily with a single email but it wont let me do it with multiple emails or a complete folder. Is there any way of do this easily?

How do I "move" Apple Mail files from one machine to another? I have Machine A. It went ill & I merged its Mail files into Machine B. Now Machine A is healthy again & I want to move/merge Mail files on Machine B back to A. I'm concerned that if I "merge" B back to A, I'll get a lot of duplicate folders/emails.

I've been using my internal drive for iMovie files, but have been doing a lot more with the program recently and the folder has gotten quite large. I'd like to move it to my main external drive (a Drobo). Anybody know if there's a way to do this correctly, from within the iMovie program, to insure that it knows where all the files are? (rather than just moving the folder manually etc.) Is there a setting preferences for example, where it tells it where to store the files etc?

Rather than go through the steps of changing library location and then consolidating the library, can I just do this (all w/iTunes turned off):1. Copy entire iTunes folder, incl. Music folder and library.xml, etc. from old to new drive2. Disconnect old drive.3. Rename the new drive the same as the old drive.If the drive name, folder structure and file path are the same, will iTunes notice the difference between the two drives when I launch it? It seems to me that Mail doesnt delete the previous RSS articles (although I have deleted them from inside the mail) hence the massive size of the folder. I tried deleting the folder, but then all the RSS feeds were gone when I launched Mail again. Is there anyway to reduce the size of this folder and delete the old articles without having to delete all the RSS feeds (and the folder itself?
View 2 Replies View RelatedIt seems every day Apple Mail puts a couple good messages in the junk folder. Unfortunately, it doesn't mark them as junk, so I am unable to mark them as not junk. I reset the junk mail preferences, so it does not "trust junk mail headers in messages," and I removed the envelope indices as discussed here: Junk Mail eating non-junk mail but neither worked, ad good messages are still going to the junk folder.
View 6 Replies View RelatedI've been using Apple Mail (version 7.3 (1878.6)) on my MacBook Pro 13" (9,2) (MacOS 10.9.4) for years to integrate my GMail, university, and other e-mail accounts in the imap mode. Since some weeks, Mail is behaving odd: some messages are sent automatically to the archive folder. That's quite annoying, as I have to move them manually back to the inbox folder, and sometimes I mess some messages. I did not change any config in Apple Mail or my e-mails servers.

When i use Outlook on my windows comp (or bootcmap partition) i can view my spam mail folder. Sometimes mail i want, end up in there, so its quite handy. Is there anyways i can activate this feature in Mac OSX mail? Or do i have to use entourage?

I am curious as to the benefits of of the following:
Drive 1 (640)
partition 1: 150gig for OS
partition 2: Bootcamp
remainder: Offline storage
Drive 2 (640)
partition 1: Applications
remainder: music/photos
(scratch disk here?)
Drive 3: (500)
Time machine
Would there be a noticeable benefit to having the applications being separate from the OS boot drive? What if anything else should be split across multiple HDs to increase speed? I've heard of moving the swap file from elsewhere on the forum but I am not sure as to what exactly that is nor the benefits of doing it.
My final question(s) is how exactly I could go by moving my application folder to another drive separate from the OS drive? Just drag and drop? What is this deal with making an alias?
If I send a msg from Apple Mail to i.e. Outlook Express. The same msg shows up with "clean" text formating. That will say, no formatting at all. See this screen: [URL:...] I have just gotten back to the Mac now from 10-11 months in hell with Windows-stuf, so I am really eager to get this fixed. I have all my old mail and sent mail downloaded locally in the Mail program.
Is there an easy way to export all of that into gmail? I see I can import mail into gmail from other mail accounts, but here I am talking about importing mail that is now stored locally.
I have two old hotmail accounts that don't really get much mail these days. I don't want to completely abandon these email addresses so I have them use POP3 in my Apple Mail client (along with my other emails addys). Since hotmail is hardly stable with pop3 I get a lot of connection failed messages. I think it's because Apple Mail is hitting Hotmails servers every 5 mins to check for new mail - I don't need that. Is there a way to have certain email accounts be checked at different times than other accounts - like only once a day for my hotmail and once an hour for my gmail?
View 3 Replies View Relatedi would like to move some of the media folders in the home folder to another partition, for example the Movies, Pictures, Music, maybe even Documents and also keep the folder icons.Just recreating them in the other partition I lose the folder icons/designs so is there a good way to do this?I have already recreated a downloads folder and pointed all relevant programs to download anything into that folder/partition but I dont have the nifty icon...I cant delete any of the existing ones in the home folder even if I recreate them and I wonder what the repercussions are if I do it to my music folder i.e itunes etc

I moved 20+ folders and over 8k messages with no problem by dragging and dropping the folder from 'On my mac' section to 'iCloud' section in Mail. The last two folders were the largest with over 1.5k in each folder. Over 1200 of the messages in each went in to iCloud without a hitch. Then I got this error:
The IMAP command “APPEND” (to [mail box name]) failed with server error: Message contains NUL characters.
There are 149 messages left in one folder and 203 in another folder. Try as I might, it will not work. I tried Rebuild mailbox option in menu and exported to Mail and mbox format and then re-importing. Still does not work.

When I sent an email from my Gmail account in Mail.app on my MacBook, it shows up in the Sent folder. When I send it from [URL] on a public computer or from my iPhone or iPad, it shows up in the Gmail mailbox in Mail.app (which is its own mailbox and not part of the Inbox section of Mail.app).
This makes it difficult when I'm trying to find a recently sent email because I don't use any one machine more than the other. I divide my emailing time between all my devices and I love how simply it works. Is there a way to get all sent Gmail emails to show up in the Sent folder under the Mailboxes section in the top-left corner of the Mail.app window?
I have somehow ended up with two Gmail inbox lists after setting my Gmail account up in Mail. Hopefully the picture below can help, but I would like to know how to remove this second folder in the sidebar, just to make a bit of room and clean things up.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have my Gmail account setup with IMAP in Mail 3.0 (Leopard), with about half a dozen labels that of course appear as folders in Mail's sidebar. Labels that I create myself appear as normal folders and look quite nice and neat, but Gmail has it's own "[Google Mail]" folder (which has a white folder icon rather than the default blue?) which contains my All Mail and Starred folders. Ideally I would like both the All Mail and Starred folders to appear in my mailbox section along with drafts, junk, ect. - but I know that this is probably not possible. But I'd be happy to settle for just removing the [Google Mail] folder and having All Mail and Starred appear as normal folders. Dragging them out of the [GM] folder gives me the following error; "The IMAP command "RENAME" (to All Mail) failed with server error: Folder name "All Mail" is not allowed. (Failure). So obviously it's trying to move the All Mail folder on the Gmail server itself, which Gmail doesn't like. I've also tried changing the IMAP path prefix in account setting to [Google Mail], which put All Mail and Starred as normal folders but then removed all my other folders and screwed with my messages - I was forced to revert to my old setting and re-download all my messages again. All 7500+ of them. Does anybody know of any hacks or plugins or workarounds that could help me out here? I know it's silly and OCD-ish, but it really bugs me having this [Google Mail] folder in my sidebar.
View 1 Replies View RelatedOn my laptop, in Mail, I have two folders under each reminders (notes and todos) called "on my mac" and "mobileme". On my imac, I only have the one folder (just named notes and todos). When I add a note from the imac, I get it on the laptop. When I add something from the laptop, it goes into the mobileme folder and the imac can't see it. I have notes set to sync automatically with mobileme on both machines. I want to eliminate the extra folders on the laptop (like the imac) and sync both folders automatically.

I am currently using a Gmail IMAP setup in Mail.app. Everything is working great, and with a Gmail Labs feature called Advanced IMAP Settings, I have hidden all of the main Gmail folders, like All Mail and Starred. I've already integrated folders like Sent and Trash with Mail.app's mailboxes.
Because of these, the [Gmail] folder in my account is completely empty. I now wish to remove it from the sidebar, since I don't need it there. How can I accomplish this?
I'd like to stop certain folders being downloaded via IMAP from Gmail. The most important is the Spam folder, as this clogs up my dock with unnecessary email counts. Anyone know how to do this?
