Sometimes I'd like to create an aliases/shortcuts from an application which resides within a folder and place that alias inside the root of the /Applications/ folder instead. However, for some reason I can't do this on my wife's Mac running Leopard 10.5.8.
So instead of getting a "green arrow" type icon whenever I click the app's icon while holding down ALT and CMD I now get a white circle with a line over it, apparently indicating that this is something I can't do. I believe I checked my drive's permissions (using "Disk utility") but found no errors (or had the errors fixed), so what could be the problem?
By the way, I've also noticed that I'm asked to verify (with the user-login password) if I want to delete (put an application in the trash) something from inside the Applications folder. Is this normal? I'm not used to this from MacOSX Tiger 10.4.
i have to send my mac in service, but before i have to save my data. i will receive a external hdd and thought to use time machine with it and my mac. after that i will send my mac in service. if they dont fix it or dont return it and i will buy a new mac, also with 10.6, will time machine make the new mac the same as old one, with all my folders and files? or do i have not to use time machine and backup file by file?

View 1 Replies View RelatedI am sending out resume's to many different people and they each have very minor adjustments. I thought I could just make a 'draft' and change the receiver's email address etc. but when ever I hit send even if it was saved as a draft it is then gone after the send. Is there a way to make a template so it will send but I will still have it saved in 'draft's after?
View 4 Replies View RelatedI'm trying to figure out the genesis of my problem. Two days ago, I was able to send and receive mail using the Mail app with no problem. Then suddenly last night, I can only send mail using the app. I called Comcast to see if they had a mail server down and they told me it was a problem with my e mail client since I could send and receiving using the Comcast webmail. I don't get it. I didn't change any of my settings and I can send and receive just fine using my iPhone.

Where about's is this mail folder/file that I need for it?
When I sent an email from my Gmail account in Mail.app on my MacBook, it shows up in the Sent folder. When I send it from [URL] on a public computer or from my iPhone or iPad, it shows up in the Gmail mailbox in Mail.app (which is its own mailbox and not part of the Inbox section of Mail.app).
This makes it difficult when I'm trying to find a recently sent email because I don't use any one machine more than the other. I divide my emailing time between all my devices and I love how simply it works. Is there a way to get all sent Gmail emails to show up in the Sent folder under the Mailboxes section in the top-left corner of the Mail.app window?
Can anyone tell me how I can change my outgoing message font color like from black to Blue and make it default without having to do it manually every time. I can't seem to figure it out.
View 15 Replies View RelatedI have somehow ended up with two Gmail inbox lists after setting my Gmail account up in Mail. Hopefully the picture below can help, but I would like to know how to remove this second folder in the sidebar, just to make a bit of room and clean things up.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI have my Gmail account setup with IMAP in Mail 3.0 (Leopard), with about half a dozen labels that of course appear as folders in Mail's sidebar. Labels that I create myself appear as normal folders and look quite nice and neat, but Gmail has it's own "[Google Mail]" folder (which has a white folder icon rather than the default blue?) which contains my All Mail and Starred folders. Ideally I would like both the All Mail and Starred folders to appear in my mailbox section along with drafts, junk, ect. - but I know that this is probably not possible. But I'd be happy to settle for just removing the [Google Mail] folder and having All Mail and Starred appear as normal folders. Dragging them out of the [GM] folder gives me the following error; "The IMAP command "RENAME" (to All Mail) failed with server error: Folder name "All Mail" is not allowed. (Failure). So obviously it's trying to move the All Mail folder on the Gmail server itself, which Gmail doesn't like. I've also tried changing the IMAP path prefix in account setting to [Google Mail], which put All Mail and Starred as normal folders but then removed all my other folders and screwed with my messages - I was forced to revert to my old setting and re-download all my messages again. All 7500+ of them. Does anybody know of any hacks or plugins or workarounds that could help me out here? I know it's silly and OCD-ish, but it really bugs me having this [Google Mail] folder in my sidebar.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI would like to create an "On My Mac" folder within my Sent folder in Apple Mail. Can I do this?
The new "On My Mac" folder would be a nice place to where I could move some of my old outgoing emails, which currently reside in my IMAP-based Sent folders and hence take quota space.
Is there a way to move the Apple Mail folder someplace else? I have a bunch of archived mail (mbox) on an external drive and I want to access them but I don't know how unless I drag them to my Library folder.
View 2 Replies View RelatedOn my laptop, in Mail, I have two folders under each reminders (notes and todos) called "on my mac" and "mobileme". On my imac, I only have the one folder (just named notes and todos). When I add a note from the imac, I get it on the laptop. When I add something from the laptop, it goes into the mobileme folder and the imac can't see it. I have notes set to sync automatically with mobileme on both machines. I want to eliminate the extra folders on the laptop (like the imac) and sync both folders automatically.
View 1 Replies View RelatedI'm fairly new to Apple Mail and what not. So I'm going to refer to what I used to do on my PC to handle some important email's that I received. This was while I was using the built in Windows Mail program. What I want to do and use to do is. While in the mail program I created an "Important" folder for the mail program and I would move important emails that I did not want lingering in my inbox and that I didn't want to delete or anything. Is there some way to create folders in Apple Mail to save some important emails like this? I have 3 email accounts in Apple Mail [Gmail, MobileMe, & Comcast POP].
View 6 Replies View RelatedSetting up mail on my new MBA... Is it possible to get Mail to sync (and download) the emails I have filed in my personal folders in Yahoo Mail ?
I am currently using a Gmail IMAP setup in Mail.app. Everything is working great, and with a Gmail Labs feature called Advanced IMAP Settings, I have hidden all of the main Gmail folders, like All Mail and Starred. I've already integrated folders like Sent and Trash with Mail.app's mailboxes.
Because of these, the [Gmail] folder in my account is completely empty. I now wish to remove it from the sidebar, since I don't need it there. How can I accomplish this?
I'd like to stop certain folders being downloaded via IMAP from Gmail. The most important is the Spam folder, as this clogs up my dock with unnecessary email counts. Anyone know how to do this?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have had a Gmail IMAP account sync with Mail without problems for over a year. I almost never actually log into Gmail in a browser anymore because Mail works just fine.
The other day I was away from my computer so I logged in via a browser and saw that about a month ago, Gmail stopped saving sent messages in the sent section.
Those messages are still in my Mail folder, but never got sent to the server or not saved. I never changed any configurations.
Is there some way to manually "push" those messages to keep things in sync?
I have checked my settings, everything is normal.
The title basically says it all. This is my first post, and I am pretty much a mac noob. I noticed that I was getting lowish on space, and noticed that the folder for my IMAP gmail account was taking up a lot more space then I thought it should. I've got a screen shot, but don't know how to post it at the moment. (I lack a free hosting account =
View 4 Replies View RelatedI've just transferred to a new machine, I tried simply adding my e-mail accounts in and have had trouble.
So, I'm trying to copy the Mail folder in my user's library on my old machine onto my new machine.
I've placed them in the correct folder, when I open mail it's not loading my old messages.
Any thoughts on why it isn't working? Am I missing something?
EDIT: Aha! Success, I copied my mail.plist file (under Library > Preferences) onto my new machine as well.
I know there is a way to get the From Subject etc on top like in the past but I can't remember. Anyone know how?

I don't know how to make a folder password protected, I know how in OS 9, but, I haven't had the need forever and now I do, I'm runnign Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.3. What I need to have protected is a folder that holds a backup of my website.
Any applications or something?
I tried using it in Keychain but, I don't know what I'm doing in there.
I was wondering if it is possible to make a certain folder password protected? If so, how would I do that? I only want to require password on one specific folder.
