No System Disk With New Imac
Mar 9, 2012
I have just bought a new iMac with Lion preloaded and have been told that Apple no longer provide a system disc with new computers. Is this right? How can you reload the system, if it all goes pear-shaped?

I recently came across an old iMac G3 by a dumpster (It is perfectly functional, the fact that I found it by the dumpster has nothing to do with the problem). I brought it up to find out that every user created on the computer is password protected. I've been trying to get past it, but it's impossible. I can't afford an install CD, resetting the PRAM and the PRU doesn't do a thing, and Open Firmware is a pain. Is there any way to get into the iMac without having to buy a disc or go all around town trying to find the original owner so I can get his passwords?
Info:
iMac G3 (CRT Slot-loading), Mac OS 9.2.x

I have an old Macbook via 2007 and I'm trying to update my operating system (currently OS 10.5.8) to Snow Leopard, but the disk is not reading in the disk drive. And unfortunately, Snow Leopard is only on a DVD, it can't be downloaded.I figure I have 2 choices:
1) take it in and spend $49 to have them do diagnostics and then tell me they probably need to replace the superdrive
2) I could buy an external optical drive. But I would need to know which one would be compatable with my old *** Macbook.

Every time I try to restart my computer on my Hard Drive I get this message "Startup disk could not gather enough information on the selected disk". As of right now I am running my whole computer off of a 16GB flash drive that is quickly running out of memory. How do I fix my Hard Drive without losing all 150GB worth of data. I am running off of OS X 10.6.8 and have another iMac that is working fine.

Is it possible to use a 10.6 disk that was included with my purchase of a MacBook to perform a clean install of snow leopard on my 2 year old Mac Pro? I remember back in the system 9 days all we had to do was a key combination(command-shift-K methinks?) at the install screen to use the system discs on other systems...

I was having problems with Incorrect Valance error message, ran my utilities' repair as advised. I noticed that my PowerPC G4 shows the OS as 10.3.9. Went to look at the disk that came with my Mac that I carry in my case - It says it's Version 10.4.2. Should I try to install this on my Hard drive? If I do, will it cause me any problems/will I lose anything? I have moved not that long ago, and almost all of my stuff is still boxed up, so no back up drive to mirror my drive to. I can't remember if I had to install the OS on my Mac when I bought it in '05 or not, but the disk that has the OS says it contains a later OS version than what my mac's "About this Mac" states.

While I was partitioning my disk, disk utility froze, along with my whole system. So I was forced to reboot.
Now my Mac thinks there's an 80 gb chunk of data somewhere (the data that would have been my partition), but I can't find it. How do I regain the lost space?

I've removed my old hard drive from my macbook (which I have sold) and am about to buy a new 13"mbp. Unfortunately I couldn't buy the new machine before selling the old, so I am presented with a problem. I could just install the disk in the new machine (its a 320gb 7200rpm, so in the long-term I'll be doing this in any case), but I'll want iLife 09 on there and its possible there are system files that are required for the new machine that wont be on my old system (10.5.7, from a 2007 macbook).
The main thing is that I want all my files, and applications and settings, plugins etc., on the new mbp, but because I don't have the old laptop I cant use migration assistant. The disk is in a usb enclosure currently. So, do I install the old disk and then try and update iLife, or will I run into problems? Or, can I transfer my applications and all their settings via some other means? I have a (full!) lacie firewire external which I could perhaps employ.

I want to restore and recover OSX & Logic 8 and the software i use with it (Apogee Maestro,UAD Quad & Waves plug-ins) to a new boot disk. I have both a back up of the main OS drive on a drive with Time Machine and a disk copy of the main drive (on another) as i had it before the boot disk crashed. My question is which is the best option to take when restoring the OS etc? As I have heard that there is a couple of bugs and issues when restoring via Time Machine. Is restoring via the disk copy a simple procedure? Or, should i reinstall everything completely from scratch and copy back the receipts and authorizations perhaps? Can you point me towards the best link/method to get my setup back on track? i'm using an apogee symphony pci card

I have a brand new 15 inch i5 mbp. I put a cd in to rip it onto itunes. It was really scratched. Now the computer ate my disc (I know I can restart and it will be ok, that's not my question). Shouldn't my brand new mbp be able to cope with a scratched disc? It seems a bit bizarre that the entire computer would freeze just because a disc is scratched. Also, it seems like it takes much longer to rip cds than it does on my pc. It doesn't just seem like it. It takes almost twice as long.

I'm getting a new Mac for some software development. More than likely it will arrive with the disk formatted as "case preserving but not case sensitive". This has bitten me more than once where one directory contains two files whose names are the same, ignoring case.
If I reformat the disk as "case sensitive" and reinstall MacOS, (1) will that work, and (2) if it works, are there any "gotchas" to be aware of later on?

I have an Imac 5,1 2.16 Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo running Mac OS X version 10.4.11 and am fairly new to Mac. I made the cardinal sin of not leaving all of the pc world behind me when I made the switch to Mac and one day after examining my software, I noticed what appeared to be an excessive amount of folders containing only 1 or 2 photos apiece, scattered throughout the system. I got the bright idea to "tidy up " a bit so I created a folder where I could easily find it, and moved the single pix there and then deleted the original folders. My mistake was soon obvious, when the slideshows I had created in Iphoto would not work and some pictures were missing.
My problem is this: I bought the computer used and it came with nothing but the main unit , the mouse, and keyboard. I found a fix to the Iphoto problem, but it requires the original system disk which I do not have. I do however have a factory Mac OS X Tiger disc from an old powermac G3 I have. I was wondering if that disc would work to reinstall Iphoto? If so, are there any special instructions to get it to work? And lastly, if it doesn't work what are my next best options?

My son made me a DVD-r of mp3 files and a dvd on his new mac. I cannot get it to read on my system. Other CDs and dvds work fine so know disk drive is ok. I have tried the disk on windows based computers and it works fine. Is my computer too old to read or do you have a suggestion on how to read? When I insert the disk, nothing comes up on the desktop to click on to read.

Got my new iMac 27" i7 2.93 for three weeks ago. Everything was kind of fine but now everytime i boot it starts to write to the disk, and since you really can hear when the machine writes to the disk, it's obvious when it does it. The disk is a WDC WD1001FALS-40Y6A0
- I turned of spotlight indexing, rebooted, 30 minutes later it was still writing like there was no tomorrow.
- Checked Console.app, just Google Chrome trowing messages (which is running slower then on my old MBP Santa Rosa 5400 rpm).
- Ran disk utilty repair permissions, still no luck.
- Used Lingon to get rid of **** at startup, still no luck.
- No disk encryption.
The bottom line: The machine runs slower, boots applications slower and functions slower then my old MBP 2.4 ghz Santa Rosa 2007 with a 5400 rpm hdd. I tried to run a blu ray mkv from the internal disk, stuttered as hell and didn't work despite VLC being the only open application. Then i ran it from an external 5400 rpm Firewire drive and it worked flawlessy. What is up with this? Shall i reinstall and empty my disk?
Is there any software for checking what applications is currently writing to the HDD?
Screenshot from my activity monitor.

I purchased a LaCie Little Big Disk 200GB. It's an external HDD with two 2,5" 7200RPM hdd's paired as a raid 0 system.Great on paper, horribly risky in practice. So, *stupid me* started using this disk as a backup device for some important data. Of course the disk has started to malfunction. When I plug it in, there's this terrible clicking noise and it no longer mounts.I have already voided the warranty as I opened it up thinking/hoping it was a faulty connection.
