Software :: Won't Work With System Disk Format
Jun 21, 2008
I'm getting a new Mac for some software development. More than likely it will arrive with the disk formatted as "case preserving but not case sensitive". This has bitten me more than once where one directory contains two files whose names are the same, ignoring case.
If I reformat the disk as "case sensitive" and reinstall MacOS, (1) will that work, and (2) if it works, are there any "gotchas" to be aware of later on?

I had windows vista installed but suddenly the audio decided to become faulty, after spending a day trying to fix it i realized I have a windows 7 install disc so i might as well just replace vista with windows 7. I didnt take care of vista or ever register it so it became quite a task to upgrade so i just deleted the partition and went to create a new one and just do a full install of windows 7.
I made the partition but the wrong format, so i removed it through boot camp assistant and created another, except now it keeps giving me the "back up the disk and use disk utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using boot camp assistant again" Now, I'd love to do this, except I have no idea what I'm doing and WHY this error has occured. After becoming frustrated I switched from my imac to my macbook pro and received the same error when trying to create a partition. So any help on exactly what I need to do would be a HUGE help. I only use windows for music production (I know, seems backwards, but I use Sony Acid and FL Studio so I'm stuck with Windows)

I have 43GB available on a 120GB drive on my MacBook base model and I'm trying to partition via BootCamp.I'm trying to allocate 32GB to the Windows partition but I keep getting the following error message:Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume. Restore your information to the disk and try using Boot Camp Assistant again. Now I've backed up my disk and launched disk utility, and try to follow above directions here but the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) area is grayed out and when I click apply after highlighting the MacBook are (in blue), it errors out and says the disk is out of space.

I am having an issue Partitioning my Internal HDD because some files cannot be moved it was able to Partition a while back when Installed Vista but I deleted that Partition as I needed a bigger one for Windows 7 Beta It says I need to "Back up the disk and use Disk Utility to format it as a single Mac OS Extended (Journaled) volume." does that mean I have to reformat my entire HDD? as I don't want to do that.

I have a problem with Disk Utility , when trying to format an external fire wire drive.
I cleaned out the drive and proceeded to erase it with zeros. After this Disk utility will not display the subdirectory or verify, repair, partition, erase the disk. The main disk name is still visible, but I cant access any functions.
Error message says input output error.
DiskWarrior will not help, as the original directory is beyond recovery.
I suppose that I have damaged the original directory, and now I would ask the honourable forum if there is any remedy for my actions?

I have an external hard drive that I'm planning to use for my iTunes Music library, however, I plan to access the hard drive from both my Mac and Windows PC.
Now I know I could format it as FAT32 (MS-Dos Format) in Disk Utility, however, from my understanding, this wont allow files larger than 4GB ... which could be a problem in future.
If I were to format it as the Mac Journal extended format, would I still be able to read and write to this from my Windows PC? Any ideas, or other work arounds for this?

I'm making a "backup" of the first season of House and I came upon the below menu from Disk Utility.
What's the best format to use? I don't really care too much about how long it takes.
Should I use encryption? If so, which form?

I had some video files in xVid format that don't seem to work anymore since upgrading to Snow Leopard. They play fine in VLC, but cannot run in Quicktime (and thus Front Row) anymore.

i connected my HDD to my iMac and i had it format. Later on today, i had to use it on my Windows machine, and it asked me to format it which i did, but now my HDD is messed up i think. It will no longer format and when i open disk utility it reads it, but as i try to format it formats and then i try to check for disk errors, it gives me errors, adn then it asks me to repair the disk. i do, but my iMac tells me it cannot repair the disk. i tried using the OSX installation disc as well. i even tried formatting the HDD on my Windows using the My computer> Manage Disk....no good... i get a message saying it was unsuccessful. what's wrong and can this be fixed?

I bought my MBP in 2012 and after more than two years of service, I am starting to feel that it is slow and bloated. As such, I would like to completely wipe the computer and start fresh. Back in my Windows days, I would simply pop the Windows CD in the computer, format the drive and install windows again.
But my MBP did not come with a CD or DVD, so I am not sure how to proceed. I am now running Max OS 10.9.2, but the computer came with 10.7.x (I think, not sure).
How would I go about doing what I want to do?
Info:
OS X Mavericks (10.9.2)

I bought a new Hitachi 1tb bare drive and have been trying to format it through Disk Utility. I have it connected to my iMac system using a Newertech USB 2.0 drive connector. The new drive appears in Disk Utility, and when I go through the "Erase" tab and set if up as Journaled - the system seems to go into formatting mode for about ten minutes and then I get an error and I have to Force Quit the Disk Utility.

Is there away to format a mac but retain some applications (it would be under a new account profile)? Also is there away to like import an old mac's admin account to a separate account on a new mac? Basically I have an old mbp and I've been using my new mbp for awhile and would like to import the old admin account (doesnt need to stay admin since I wouldd rather keep my new admin account) to this new mbp? I would like to wipe clean my old slow mbp but keep applications such as Office.

I use several Macs. One runs OS9.2.2 and I made a screen shot of a file that I can easily open and read in OS9. The "get info" on the file says: "SimpleText document" size "252 k," "Version n/a" I sent it to my new iMac running Lion but could not open it to see the file. It is a picture. How can I see or convert the screenshot file made on OS9.2.2 on my OSX Lion system?
Info:
PowerMac, Mac OS 9.2.x

Despite the dire warnings about the Seagate drives that I read all over the place, I decided to buy this drive. Dell had a great price of $129 with free shipping.
It is going to supplement existing storage capabilities as a secondary backup so I'm covered if the drive does experience any of the problems that others have experienced. So far the drive is running great. I have copied nearly 800GB of data to it with no issues. I have the drive connected to an AEBS. I have been able to stream movies from the drive with no problems. It looks like Seagate has resolved the firmware issues that have plagued the drive in the past.
My only issue was that it was a bit of a pain to reformat the drive. For some reason disk utility would not format the drive until I created and then deleted two partitions.

I have an old Macbook via 2007 and I'm trying to update my operating system (currently OS 10.5.8) to Snow Leopard, but the disk is not reading in the disk drive. And unfortunately, Snow Leopard is only on a DVD, it can't be downloaded.I figure I have 2 choices:
1) take it in and spend $49 to have them do diagnostics and then tell me they probably need to replace the superdrive
2) I could buy an external optical drive. But I would need to know which one would be compatable with my old *** Macbook.

It brings me to the screen with the apple and the spinning wheel, and it just stays there and OSX does not load at all. I'm not to attached to anything I have on my hard drive right now so I think the easiest thing might be to just completely wipe it out. The problem is that I currently have a cd stuck in my drive and I have no idea how to eject it outside of OSX. So I'd have to figure that out before I tried running anything from the install disc.

I uploaded video from my 30 minute dvd onto my Macbook and am trying to drag it into iMovie. The issue is none of the formats at letting me drag it into there. My only goal is to add my website name at the beginning of the video. The MP4 won't work and FLV won't either although that will be the format for youtube. I am using a video converter from Mac with a huge list of formats but don't know which will work to drag it.

I work for a post secondary school with online formatted classes. We send flash drives out to students to access video content when they are on the go, but it was pretty much made for Windows based computers. I have had a few students now who have Macs and cannot open the content or are getting a message stating the drive is not formated. I see many instructions on how to format a flash drive from a Mac to work on a Mac & PC but nothing about being able to format the flash drive using a PC so it can work on a Mac.

Dell, Windows XP Pro, Windows 7
