OS X :: System Preferences Not Open After SL Upgrade
Aug 28, 2009I just upgraded to Snow Leopard and everything seems to be working fine (and fast ) except for System Preferences. Whenever I double click the icon on my desktop, it says I need to upgrade System Preferences and that I am currently using version 5.2. So how do I upgrade System Preferences? Never mind, I figured it out. The 6.0 version of SP was in the Applications folder, while it kept the 5.2 version on my desktop.

OS X V10.4 :: Can't Open Accounts In System Preferences
Apr 8, 2012I'm running Mac OS 10.4.11 on an iBook and for some reason, when I select Accounts in the System Preferences, I get nothing but a blank screen. I can't manage the accounts since I can't see the accounts to manage or any of the settings. I threw away the cache and restarted System preferences to see if that would help. It says "Loading Accounts..." but it never loads the that system preference. If I click it again, it comes up blank again and the cache is regenerated. This machine was purchased used and I don't have the OS disks to relaod the system.

May 16, 2012Every time I select the icon, the dot appears beneath it, but then it "unexpectedly closes". In addition, whenever I shut down my computer, it resets all of the user preferences I had prior to shutting it down, for instance, wallpaper, dock layout, default browser, etc etc.

Dec 15, 2008For some time now, Disk Utility simply won't open on my MacBook Pro. Actually, it opens and closes in less than a second. There is no error message. Everything else on my machine runs fine, other utilities like Cocktail etc. don't report errors. Very vexing. Any similar experiences or fixes?

MacBook :: Internet Says Have Internet But Wont Connect - Cannot Open System Preferences Or Internet Preferences
May 10, 2009I have a macbook a little over a year old. It's my first mac and I love it. Yesterday though it started acting really weird. I first noticed that it was really, really hot and the fan was running. I turned it off and back on and here's what I found out:
Applications are being deleted from macbook. ITunes, IPhoto, iChat have clear question marks over icon. There are 8-10 blank spaces in the Applications folder where applications have been deleted. However, data is still there (ex. pictures still there, but no iPhoto).
Internet= Says I have internet but wont connect.
Cannot open " System Preferences" or "Internet Preferences".
If connected to home computer will connect to internet and allowed to open internet preferences but still no system preferences.
If shut down....takes a while to come back on and starts up 2-3 times.
Also "Preview" is gone. Now " ColorSync Utility" opens.
Is this my hard drive dying? I'm tech challenged, so any help would be greatly appreciated.
OS X :: System Freezes While Running Disk Utility?
Jan 10, 2011While I was partitioning my disk, disk utility froze, along with my whole system. So I was forced to reboot.
Now my Mac thinks there's an 80 gb chunk of data somewhere (the data that would have been my partition), but I can't find it. How do I regain the lost space?
OS X :: Function Hot Key - Make Swap Instead Of Having To Open Up System Preferences
Nov 7, 2010I know how in keyboard preferences to mark the check box that says "Use function keys as standard function keys," but my question is, is there a way to use a hot key to make this swap instead of having to open up system preferences, navigate to the proper pane and tab, and click the box? I have a couple programs where I absolutely need function keys to be function keys, but for general purpose use, I need the function keys to be the spiffy stuff printed on them.
Ideally I'd love for the system to look at what app was in the foreground (that is, has control of the menu bar) and recognize this app as needing access to function-function keys and make the swap for me, but I don't think this is possible at the moment, and having a hot key to change it would be the next best thing.

Hardware :: Usb Drive In System Profiler But Not In Finder Or Disk Utility?
Jan 1, 2008 I purchased a black MacBook (10.4.11) last may and it's my first Mac. Thus far, I have only had one problem and that is that my I can't see my Motorola Z6m in finder or disk utility (but it is in system profiler). I also do not see it in Terminal under /Volumes. Inside the phone is a 2GB Verbatim microSD card that works fine in my card reader on the same machine. On a side note, bluetooth works fine.
The phone works as expected in the PCs I've tried it in, including a parallels vm running XP on the MacBook (I don't have access to any other Macs) which led me to believe it was a formatting issue, but then the card shouldn't work in the card reader either and it should still show up in disk utitlity. Am I not correct?
I have tried rebooting, unplugging/replugging the device, removing the battery, and reinstalling OS X (I wanted to do it to get rid of Unsanity's APE anyways). I have plugged it into either port on the MacBook with the same result. I have also emailed motorola tech support. Additionally, I have done quite a bit of googling and have found other people with the same issue, but none of the suggestions have worked for me or were otherwise unworkable (some suggested downgrading to 10.4.9).
I have also heard of trying it in a powered usb hub, but the thing is, why does it work through the virtual machine if a powered hub is required? Or am I missing something in this?
MacBook Pro :: Disk Utility Doesn't Open, Trash Works Incorrectly?
Apr 5, 2012After updating to 10.7.3 I have noticed that Disk Utility no longer opens. It pops up into the utility bar for a few seconds, bobs up and down a couple of times, then disappears. The next time I click on Disk Utility I don't even get that much of a response. It just doesn't open. No error report, no pop ups saying that it can't be opened - Nada. I can't use disk utility AT ALL anymore. I've tried Zapping my PRAM, but that's about it.Â
The other thing I've noticed is that any time I put something into the Trash Bin it automatically tells me that it will delete the item - it doesn't sit in the trash bin like it used to until you manually delete it. The only time I can get it to behave normally is when I am using an external drive and I put something from the external drive into the trash bin.

Power Mac G5 :: Fatal Hardware Error To Disk Utility / Repaired System After Crash
Dec 30, 2007Started G5, got a question mark. Rebooted from disk. Tried to repair. Told me it could not exit and complete repair to HD. Restarted again. This time everything in utility window red. Message is Fatal Hardware error to disk utility. Back-up if not completely failed and replace with new drive.
Not great at behind the scenes with my mac. Does this mean a shop visit. Any estimate on cost to me. Had lots of Macs. This is the first to crash and burn and its not that old.

Sep 1, 2014I am trying to check my Harddidk by doing a Verify. So I went to Utilities, select the Harddisk, and then click VERIFY.Â
Then I the following message pops out: "Disk Utility stopped verifying "Ryan ManUtd"Â (note: Ryan Utd is the name of my harddisk)Â
Then it the window panel, there is a message which says: "Error: Live file System repair is not supported"Â
What does this mean ? Other than that, I can still access the contents in my harddisk ...Â
