I bought a used Power Mac G-5 OSX 10.4.11 (machine model Power Mac 9.1) My situation is, that it came without the back up disk. I need them in case of a crash, etc., but for now I need to get the classic OS9 installed onto my computer.Is there a way I can buy another set of system back up CDs?

I was a PC user who recently moved to mac. I have a macbook (intel 2.2GHz, 2GB RAM, 250GB HDD). When I was using PC, I backed up all my data to a network storage device (Buffalo LinkStation 250 GB connected to a 802.11g netgear router which is supplied by Sky) using a program called SmartSync Pro, which worked very well. Although I can connect to and mount the Share folder on this drive when the macbook is connected to the network, Time Machine will not back up to it. It wouldnt even recognise the disk on the network.
So I went onto the trusty internet, and found that you can get time machine to recognise the Share folder. (This was obtained from: http://blog.imulus.com/george/software/using-leopard-time-machine-to-backup-of-a-network/)See my comment on their page at the bottom, number 66.
It recommended entering the following in to the Terminal: defaults write com.apple.systempreferences TMShowUnsupportedNetworkVolumes 1
Before attempting backup I have to go into "Network" and select the Share folder by double clicking on it. This seems to mount the volume. After this, it can be seen in Time Machine as a potential backup destination.
However, this method does not work for me. Time Machine "prepares" for a while, then gives the following message: Time Machine error. The backup disk image could not be created.
More internet searching took me to macosxhints which suggests creating something called a sparsebundle image on my local system. (http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20080420211034137) Have not tried this yet as I thought it would be prudent to seek some help first.
Apple have deliberately disabled the ability for Time Machine to back up to network attached storage, (except of course to their proprietory Time Capsule):
Is this because time machine requires a network faster than 802.11g?
Is this because a time machine backup to a network attached storage device is unreliable and the data is corrupted?
I dont want to shell out more cash for a time capsule. I would prefer not to have to hardwire to an external drive (which I will also have to go out and buy). Any thoughts?
I have a external HD which has always worked fine under snow leopard. Since upgrading to lion I keep getting the following message The identity of the backup disk has changed since the previous backup.The disk may have been replaced or erased, or someone may be trying to trick your computer into backing up to the wrong disk. And after this the drive disappears from the desktop appearing agian only after restart. What can I do do rectify this? Delete and re-intialise the drive?

my TM wil not back up! It states that this backup is too large for the backup disk. The back up disk requires 573.50 GB but only 225.23 GB are available. The TM needs work space on the backup disk, in addition to the space required to store backups. Upen TM perferences to select a LARGER backup disk or make the backup smaller by excluding file.
Okay I;m sorry but obvioulsy I dont get this. I've never called Apple for help! I have every product they sell practically including Protection Plans I never used and no one will help me with this. My MAC is starting to have black or white screens and i can hear it running but it will not do anything so i have to reboot it, it screws up Enturage and then I have to rebuild that ( 5 times this year) anyway... I would like to back everything up- can I delete everything on the Time Capsule or Time Machine; god I dont even know what it is called Im so MAD... help if you can please. I have an old Macbook via 2007 and I'm trying to update my operating system (currently OS 10.5.8) to Snow Leopard, but the disk is not reading in the disk drive. And unfortunately, Snow Leopard is only on a DVD, it can't be downloaded.I figure I have 2 choices:
1) take it in and spend $49 to have them do diagnostics and then tell me they probably need to replace the superdrive
2) I could buy an external optical drive. But I would need to know which one would be compatable with my old *** Macbook.

whenever I run Time Machine on my PowerBook G4 (1.5 Ghz / 1Gb RAM / OSX 10.5.8) it will eat up GB's of hard disk space while 'preparing the backup'. After that it finishes the backup, but I don't get the space back. I'm talking about the internal HD, not the external target disk of course. Does Time Machine use the space to generate some temporary files? Any ideas how I can get my disk space back

Yesterday, Time Machine could not complete a backup and returned a 'Could not create the backup folder' error. I ran disk utilities and it returned a host of errors, ending with the message that the disk is corrupt, could not be repaired and I had to back up my data immediately. The data on the disk was however, still accessible.

I connected Lacie Backup Disk and used Time Machine to select the disk. But then a warning popped up telling me to eject the disk properly next time before disconnecting it, even though I never disconnected the device. Now time machine does not even recognize it.

I have a new (6 months old) 27in iMac with a 1TB disk and 8GB of memory. It is an Intel. I bought a new 1.5TB external USB HDD yesterday and formatted using the Disk Utility and tried both "Options" of "GUID Partition Table" and then "Apple Partition Map" because the backup kept crashing. I have selected only the main HD partition which is 55GB. I believe that it should work, however, for some reason unbeknown to me it keeps crashing. Initially, it was around about the 700mb or 1gb size. Then I managed to get to just over 10GB. Most annoying as anybody who has tried to backup with Time Machine must know given its slowness. The error messages say that the disk has been removed during the process which is not the case. Can anybody suggest a remedy or some other more reliable software to backup my system please?

When I look at the "About This Mac" -> "More Info..." -> "Storage" it shows my Time Machine and my system Hard Drive.On the system Hard Drive it is showing Backups at 60GB. Where do I find those backup files to remove them? Or what type of files does that include? Is there a tool to delete these files? I have looked at other systems and have not seen any backups by default on the systems so I figure they should be readily accessible to delete.

for the past month or so my automated backups with time machine/time capsule have not been working. Every so often the following error message pops up:
"the backup disk image could not be mounted"
in troubleshooting, i have tried to mount the sparsebundle image directly but without success. from reading around a bit i can see that others have had this problem, and that one solution is to delete the sparsebundles and start again.
but that of course means losing all my archived backups, which i would rather avoid.
I want to use Time Machine, but I don't want to have all my data sitting in the open on an external drive that someone can just carry away. Can I make an encrypted disk image, and have Time Machine use that as the backup volume?
View 2 Replies View RelatedToday is a bad day. My old 24" iMac has finally died it looks like and is experiencing the Gray Screen Of Death. I did have an external backup drive using time machine, so I was just going to restore it to my other iMac, but I can't find my boot disk.
I know how to do it with the boot disk, but is there any way to do it without one? I just want to restore the whole thing.

I'm going to use FW400(since my MB pro has no 800 port) and partition this into two 1.5TB partitions. one for storage, and one for time machine backup. My question is if I choose 2 partitions in disk utility, will it automatically know to use one of the 1.5TB Seagate HD for one partition and the other 1.5TB seagate for the 2nd partition? Or will it use half of one and half the other? I would like one partition to be one seagate 1.5TB HD, and the 2nd partition to be the other, that way if one fails I have a backup (using Time Machine with one partition to backup the other 1.5TB drive).
I'm interested in replacing my 250GB HDD for a 80GB SSD. I want to use the old drive as a USB backup disk for Time Machine, but is 5400 RPM fast enough for this?

I brought a WD Elements 500GB External Hard Drive and when I plug it into my mac book (OSx) it appears in finder, and the desktop but I can't drag and drop nothing into it. Apparently I have to format it! So have researched about formatting it, but I don't have "Disk Utility" in my utilities? My Mac was given to me from a friend second hand so i don't have the disks etc to get it. Any other way of formatting my Hard drive or a link to download disk utilities or any alternatives!

When I try to restore the 75gb image to a 128gb SSD formatted in OS Extended (Journaled), Disk Utility says that there is not enough space on disk to restore.

Just had a couple of questions to make sure I'm prepared for the worse...
- What temperatures can hard drives survive at? Is there a risk of it overheating in my car?
- I've read about some issues with CCC's backups. I'm currently backing up to an encrypted disk image - is there any way to verify the backup? If I just cloned the drive instead so it was bootable is there any way to encrypt it? And is Super Duper more reliable?
