IMac :: Use Handbrake To Rip Movies To TV Files?
Mar 1, 2009
I use handbrake to rip movies to TV files (.m4v). Is there a way to reverse this process? Say I don't have the DVD anymore, just the .m4v file, and want it to be able to play in any DVD player. Does anyone know a way to convert the .m4v back into video_ts/audio_ts files?

has anyone tested out handbrake on their i7? I'm still waiting on my i7 but was curious just how fast a 2 hour DVD would take on handbrake for a mp4 appleTV format...

i can't playback any movies i have ripped. Ripped them using the H.264 codec and MP4 format at 100% constant quality. The end result is a .m4v file on my desktop which can't be played using vlc or quicktime. Anyone got any idea what i am doing wrong? - I know it's probably something stupid

I need some help to convert .dv and .avi files to ipod touch compatible files using handbrake. When I try to choose either file type as the source file it just says 'no valid title found'.
The .dv file is a clip shot with my video camera and imported onto my mac using imovie, then saved as separate full quality file, in order to have a separate file that is not sitting in imovie.
The .avi file is a downloaded movie.
Both movies play fine in quicktime player and VLC player.
The Handbrake program does work as I have successfully converted a file ripped from a dvd using mactheripper.
I am surprised that I can't get it to work, as other threads on this forum recommends handbrake as the best software for video conversions for ipod.

So I have been trying to convert my Blu-Rays using a combination of MakeMKV and Handbrake, so I have been able to get the MKV and am able to play them, but once I do the handbrake, and it runs through fine, I get an error when I try to play the m4v file. It says "The document _____ could not be opened. The movie is not in a format the Quicktime Player understands."

Does anyone know how to extract audio from video files? I can't seem to do it from within the Handbrake GUI - is there a command line way of doing it? Otherwise, what's a program that can do it? Obviously I could use Audio Hijack, but I'd rather not have the quality loss that comes with re-encoding.

I have a lot of movies encoded with handbrake at the apple tv settings, and a few people have asked how to take one of those and re-convert it back into dvd files.
can this be done? I need to put a few backed up dvd's back onto dvd's cause i already got rid of them and i cannot watch the appletv handbrake version over at certain friends houses.
I tried doing the video files as data but they still show up with the .mp4 at the end and the dvd player will not recognize them.

Wondering how fast a program like Handbrake will be ripping DVDs on the i7? Wouldn't the turbo boost do wonders for an application like this?

I have a iMac and a Macbook (unibody before they became "pro"). Both are 2.4Ghz models with 4Gb of RAM. I think the iMac has a slower system bus, but they are pretty close otherwise.
I can rip DVDs and convert videos on the Macbook all day long without problems. But Handbrake always quits unexpectedly on the iMac. I have downloaded the latest version of Handbrake, uninstalled several times, and totally leave it alone while running Handbrake. Nothing prevents this from happening.
Does anyone know what could be causing this problem or another (free) program that will do what Handbrake does as easily? I officiate basketball and I have a lot of friends who are asking me about pulling clips from game DVDs. With Handbrake it is easy to rip the DVD and trim the clip using Quicktime.

Does anyone know if there is a certain temperature that causes iMac's to shut down? I have been queuing up a number of movies in Handbrake and letting the iMac chomp away at them. For several months this was not an issue (this is a 2009 iMac 2.93 base model, no upgrades.) For the last week or two, I have come back to find the computer off a number of times.
Every time it has done it i was while Handbrake had the processor pegged at 100% for a long time. The 3 highest temps are usually the power supply, the Northbridge and the CPU and the highest I have seen them is right around 70C. Last night I did some messing around with that fan control program and got the fans to run higher while Handbrake was running.
I managed to keep all of the temps below 65C. I am going to leave it like this for a while and see if I have any more problems. I'm also going to try to cut back on the number I queue up at a time. I was setting up enough to keep it going for 12-14 hours. I don't actually think it was a time thing though as last night it shut down while my wife was using it and it was less than 2 hours after I started a batch.
Has anyone else had similar experiences? I see some people suggesting it could be caused by bad memory, but as mine only seems to happen with Handbrake at 100%, I'm thinking it's just heat.

I have an external hard drive connected to my Time Capsule that is loaded with a bunch of VIDEO_TS folders of all my DVDs, and I have that drive aliased in my "Movies" folder on my MacBook Pro, so when I open Front Row, it points to my external HDD, and everything is hunky-dory. But I also have other files in this HDD (a bunch of JPG files) that are also being seen by Front Row. For reasons that are too boring to get into, I don't want to separate the files into different locations, I would like to keep them together. But my goal is to be able to somehow block Front Row from seeing these JPG files and just display the list of my DVDs instead. Is there any way to tell my alias to block out the JPGs, or some way to hide the JPGs from that particular alias, or something along those lines?

I recently got a Macbook pro OS X Lion and for the past few months have had problems with trying to run movies on Quicktime 10.1. My videos files are usually .AVI but when I try to click on it quick time opens and then tells me that it can't read the file. I've search the internet for answer and have tried a lot of different solutions that others have had success on (including updating Perian and trying to convert the .AVI file to .MOV) yet I still have had no such luck.

I know there are tons of threads on various ways to get one's iMac playing hi-def movies, but the purpose of this thread is to sort out which way is best. I'm getting an iMac soon and want to be ready. The way I see it, I basically have three options (only two of which I know to work for sure). 1. Get external blu-ray drive, buy a copy of windows, buy the windows BD software (powerdvd or whatever). I think I can get a BD-ROM for like $150 or so, what is the cheapest option for purchasing windows? Powerdvd? Pros- plays right off disk, will have windows and all the extras that it entails (gaming, etc... I would to get down on some half-life again). Cons- buying all the software seems expensive, less than elegant process everytime I watch something 2. Buy an external BD drive, rip the disks to my harddrive, play in plex. Pros- all native, uses plex (which I plan to use anyway), least to buy, no disks to deal with once everything is ripped Cons- ripping and encoding take lots of time, storage becomes an issue 3- (don't know if this works) buy an eyetv and a blu-ray player (not drive) and use my iMac like a tv. Pros- get added benefits of eyetv (I am more of a tv watcher than movies), setup would work if I ever upgrade to an HDTV, as elegant as watching on a tv Cons- might not work? Not integrated with computer, on expensive side. So what do you guys think, keeping in mind that I'm a tv guy, not a movie guy.

What is the best way to stream movies to my PS3 from my iMac so that i can watch them on my LCD TV? ( i never needed any software or anything when i had my PC connected to my PS3 ) so i am not sure if i need software or not?
I assume the PS3 will not just detect the iMac on its own.

I'm converting from a PC to a iMac and am having trouble with movies playing that I've transferred. My MPEG movies show on the Mac as File Type "MPEG Movie" and my WMV files show as File Type "Plain Text". When I click either of these on it gives me an error that says the files are not movie files and they cannot be played.
What do I have to do to get these movies to play on the Mac?

I am trying to burn movies from iPhoto to a dvd for backup. I have attempted to do the export to another file method, then burn to DVD, but whenever I try the export, I get a list of 20 video files that were not exported. This is the only method I have been able to find that is supposed to work for getting movies out of iphoto and onto a disc.

I love AirPlay. I use it on my iPod Touch the moment I get home to play music to my speakers connected via AirPort Express. I use it on my iPad too when i'm watching a movie..
Even on my MBP when listening to music from iTunes. But Movies in iTunes don't work. The AirPlay icon in a movie playing in iTunes only shows "computer" and doesn't show any other options.
