I have my first ever Mac in the form of a 13" MBP! I am trying to rip some DVDs using handbrake. However, when Handbrake has finished scanning the source DVD (commercial DVDs), it only shows 1 title in the drop down title box. I have tried restarting, taking the DVD out and popping it back in again, but with no luck. Has anyone got any ideas what I'm doing wrong? How do I get all titles to show in the drop down title selection box?

Applications :: Handbrake Crashes On IMac Consistently?

Nov 17, 2009

I have a iMac and a Macbook (unibody before they became "pro"). Both are 2.4Ghz models with 4Gb of RAM. I think the iMac has a slower system bus, but they are pretty close otherwise.

I can rip DVDs and convert videos on the Macbook all day long without problems. But Handbrake always quits unexpectedly on the iMac. I have downloaded the latest version of Handbrake, uninstalled several times, and totally leave it alone while running Handbrake. Nothing prevents this from happening.

Does anyone know what could be causing this problem or another (free) program that will do what Handbrake does as easily? I officiate basketball and I have a lot of friends who are asking me about pulling clips from game DVDs. With Handbrake it is easy to rip the DVD and trim the clip using Quicktime.

IMac :: System Shutdowns Randomly / Handbrake Or Bad Memory?

Aug 4, 2009

Does anyone know if there is a certain temperature that causes iMac's to shut down? I have been queuing up a number of movies in Handbrake and letting the iMac chomp away at them. For several months this was not an issue (this is a 2009 iMac 2.93 base model, no upgrades.) For the last week or two, I have come back to find the computer off a number of times.

Every time it has done it i was while Handbrake had the processor pegged at 100% for a long time. The 3 highest temps are usually the power supply, the Northbridge and the CPU and the highest I have seen them is right around 70C. Last night I did some messing around with that fan control program and got the fans to run higher while Handbrake was running.

I managed to keep all of the temps below 65C. I am going to leave it like this for a while and see if I have any more problems. I'm also going to try to cut back on the number I queue up at a time. I was setting up enough to keep it going for 12-14 hours. I don't actually think it was a time thing though as last night it shut down while my wife was using it and it was less than 2 hours after I started a batch.

Has anyone else had similar experiences? I see some people suggesting it could be caused by bad memory, but as mine only seems to happen with Handbrake at 100%, I'm thinking it's just heat.

Software :: How To Rip DVD's To Mac Using Handbrake?

Apr 28, 2008

HandBrake is a free DVD to MPEG-4 ripper/converter for Mac OS X 10.3.9 and later. Follow these steps to use HandBrake to convert your DVDs into MP4 format for storage and playback on your hard drive, or for playback on your video-supported iPod, iPhone and Apple TV.1. Download and install HandBrake. Insert the DVD you wish to convert into your Mac's DVD drive. If your Mac's DVD Player application opens, quit the DVD Player application. 2. Run HandBrake. Select Detected volume. Click Open and wait as HandBrake detects the titles on your DVD. HandBrake will detect all the titles on the DVD. If you're ripping a movie, just select the longest title in the list. If you're ripping a TV show or something with multiple episodes on one disc, then select the episode you want.

Mac Pro :: Handbrake Operate On 12 Core?

Dec 27, 2010

I'm kinda curious as to how fast handbrake would operate on a 12 core Mac Pro? (let's say with 16-32GB RAM) Let's say a 24 minute episode at 640x480 2.5mbps off of a DVD, normally takes about 24 minutes on a 13" 2.4 C2D MBP with 8GB RAM. how fast will the 12 core MP process that? if one day I should have $10K to throw around, I want to go buy a top of the line MP just to have one... It costs the same as an International Business class air ticket, but the MP will last several years while the ticket is only good for a 30 hour experience.

OS X :: Rip'd DVD With Handbrake ... IMovie 11 Not Liking It?

Jan 10, 2011

I just updated to the newest iMovie and am new to iMovie too. I used Handbrake and ripped/imported a 30 min home-video on dvd (old tape footage transferred to dvd as a gift). It works, I can play it in iTunes, and everything there is ok. BUT, when I imported into iMovie "events" and work with it in iMovie it is very very slow (iMovie). I have been to Apple (one-to-one) and spent an hour on the phone with Apple Care....

The bottom line is (after a few tests) my iMovie works very well.. It appears to be the video/import. they recommend using something other than Handbrake to see if the rip'd footage will be more manageable for iMovie. What do you guys recommend? I have a 21.5" iMac, 3.06, 8 gig ram. Its only a few months out of the box. Very fast and nice machine.... it has to be the video! I am dragging simple little clips into the notebook theme. It is as basic as possible.... but I get the beachball and problems as I drag clips, and imovie takes a long time to open as it tries to render my project (beachball, and "not responding" in activity monitor)

OS X :: Finding Alternative To HandBrake?

Jun 27, 2006

I've got a DVD that I've been trying to rip to a movie file for the last three days, and have so far been unsuccessful. (and before anyone asks, it's a non-copyrighted DVD that our company has the rights to) What's happening is it gets 99.5% done ripping, then it just kind of sits there for a while, then the program closes. I end up with a movie on my desktop that isn't playable. I've tried on two different computers, ripping to two different formats (MP4 and H-264). I've tried ripping it directly from the DVD, and also ripping the DVD to the hard drive first and then creating the file from that. It does this every time, and I think it's just HandBrake being flaky. The DVD itself plays fine. Anyone suggest an alternative way for me to do this?

Applications :: Mp4 To DVD - Using Handbrake To Rip Dvd Library?

Feb 12, 2009

I'm using handbrake to rip my dvd library.

Quicktime preset.

It's been working fine, have no complaints.

However, recently I've been attempting to burn a dvd with some of the moviesthat I ripped using handbrake. This is where the problems began.

I tried burning a few episodes of a TV series to a DVD using iDvd program... it said that the dvd only had space for 3 300mb episodes. Somehow the project info window said that those three episodes where somewhere in the window of 4gb. And when I did try to burn the dvd, the encoding process took quite literally an eon. Solutions? Why is it that the iDvd program makes the files so huge? Why does the encoding take so long? I don't need anything fancy, I'm simply trying to get my .mp4 library into a form watchable from a dvd player.

I also had a similar problem with itunes, trying to import the movies to watch on my ipod video. It transferred into itunes just fine, but when I tried to load it onto the ipod, it said that it wasn't the right format. It then began to encode the movie, and I let it run all night, to come out the next morning and find it only 25% completed. Anyone know of a way to get large (2gb max) .mp4 files onto an ipod easily?

MacBook :: Handbrake - Take More Than 25 Hours To Rip

Apr 13, 2010

The first step didn't take too long, but the second step (I think it was Rip) is another story. When I clicked the Rip button, it said that it would take more than 25 hours to Rip. I left it running for 5 hours and it was not even one quarter done. Am I doing something wrong? The dvd is only an hour long.
