IMac :: Handbrake - Fast Ripping Dvd's On I7?
Nov 5, 2009Wondering how fast a program like Handbrake will be ripping DVDs on the i7? Wouldn't the turbo boost do wonders for an application like this?

MacBook Pro :: Handbrake And I5 - Ripping / Encoding?
Jun 28, 2010when running handbrake it maxes out the cpu in my sig and uses over 300% of the processor. I'm interested in the CPU usage and speed of ripping compared to the faster i5's and I'd like to see how the i7's compare as well. I don't think the speed of the hard drive really comes into play but I have the stock 5400rpm drive. Do people with SSD's notice any difference in ripping/encoding? If so, it might be time to get an SSD

Jun 22, 2012I used handbrake to rip a DVD to an external hard drive on my old MacBook running Tiger. Handbrake gave it a .mp4 extension. When I try to play it, either on my old MacBook running Tiger or on my Air running Lion, an error message says that 'QuickTime Player can't open "DVD_VIDEO.mp4 because the movie's file format isn't recognised.' A 'tell me more' button directs to this page [URL] which annoyingly assures me that mp4 format is suported!
Is this something to do with ripping the DVD on an old Tiger compatible version of handbrake...?

Aug 10, 2010So I've never owned a mac computer before but after enjoying my iphone 4 and ipad 3g I think I'm jumping ship from windows. I just have a few questions and I'd appreciate any answers I could get. Will the base model be sufficient for my needs? Mainly going to be web browsing and using it as a media station with iTunes. The only thing I'm not sure of is ripping blu-rays. How long would it take to do a 1080p rip on the base model iMac and would the base model be sufficient enough to play back these rips? I'm currently having issues on my hp laptop even playing back 720p blu-ray rips.

Nov 17, 2009I have a iMac and a Macbook (unibody before they became "pro"). Both are 2.4Ghz models with 4Gb of RAM. I think the iMac has a slower system bus, but they are pretty close otherwise.
I can rip DVDs and convert videos on the Macbook all day long without problems. But Handbrake always quits unexpectedly on the iMac. I have downloaded the latest version of Handbrake, uninstalled several times, and totally leave it alone while running Handbrake. Nothing prevents this from happening.
Does anyone know what could be causing this problem or another (free) program that will do what Handbrake does as easily? I officiate basketball and I have a lot of friends who are asking me about pulling clips from game DVDs. With Handbrake it is easy to rip the DVD and trim the clip using Quicktime.
IMac :: New 20" 2009 IMac - Fan Speeds Normal Or Too Fast?
Apr 27, 2009Specifically the hard drive fan runs at 1600rpm and the optical fan always runs at 1350 rpms.
Those fans run faster than my 2007 24" 2.4ghz iMac.
Somehow I figured with the cooler running ddr3, 9400M igpu and better cpu architecture that this new 2009 20" iMac would be dead silent because the fans would barely have to run. Or at least be less noisey.
But that's not the case.
Anyone have any fan speeds to report on new iMacs? Particularly the 20" model?

IMac :: System Shutdowns Randomly / Handbrake Or Bad Memory?
Aug 4, 2009Does anyone know if there is a certain temperature that causes iMac's to shut down? I have been queuing up a number of movies in Handbrake and letting the iMac chomp away at them. For several months this was not an issue (this is a 2009 iMac 2.93 base model, no upgrades.) For the last week or two, I have come back to find the computer off a number of times.
Every time it has done it i was while Handbrake had the processor pegged at 100% for a long time. The 3 highest temps are usually the power supply, the Northbridge and the CPU and the highest I have seen them is right around 70C. Last night I did some messing around with that fan control program and got the fans to run higher while Handbrake was running.
I managed to keep all of the temps below 65C. I am going to leave it like this for a while and see if I have any more problems. I'm also going to try to cut back on the number I queue up at a time. I was setting up enough to keep it going for 12-14 hours. I don't actually think it was a time thing though as last night it shut down while my wife was using it and it was less than 2 hours after I started a batch.
Has anyone else had similar experiences? I see some people suggesting it could be caused by bad memory, but as mine only seems to happen with Handbrake at 100%, I'm thinking it's just heat.

Nov 9, 2010I have a 2009 24" imac, and in the past week sufring on the web is almost unbearable no matter what browser I'm using, theres nothing wrong with my connection as ive an iphone and an ipad and they both work fine.
On certain websites it will not even load the page properly on others it takes forever (including this on). Ive unistalled flash and its still the same.
i read somewhere this could be to do with the router but I have no idea what do if it is.

Feb 14, 2010I have a 20 inch 2.66 aluminum iMac that came with a 320GB HDD. Lately the HD seems to grind for a long time when I launch any programs. The whole computer seems to just be waiting on the HD to catch up. I have 4GB of ram and it never uses all of it but I can hear the drive reading/writing while I wait for apps to load. Most notably safari, cs4, etc. but it does happen on many other programs. I thought that the issue was that it had been going on a year without a reformat, I waited until snow leopard came out and completely wiped the drive and installed 10.6 on it. However the slowness came back and I have since formatted again only to have the same problems. Has anyone else experienced these slow HD's? I have run Drive Genius on it and there is no bad blocks/SMART is verified.

Jul 13, 2010the PRAM battery clearly is failing fast. After two assurances from a large local computer seller/repairer (Best Buy) that they could indeed go to her apartment, and after acquiring the correct battery for her, I have now found out that they won't go to her apartment because the computer is more than six years old. Dead end there! Does anyone know of a place in New York City (or an individual) that would both visit her apartment and be sufficiently conversant with the innards of such an old Mac that there would be a good chance that the battery will be replaced without harming the computer? There doesn't seem to be anything wrong with it besides the failing PRAM battery, but Barbara is willing to pay handsomely to have her baby fixed, even if it means having the person go over it with a fine-tooth comb and charging accordingly. The computer is extremely heavy, or I'd take it in to the Best Buy store myself, and though we could get it into a taxi (with help from a doorman), there is the problem of getting it into the store and downstairs, where the repair area is. I'm strong but probably, not strong enough to do it, and we don't know anyone who could help. Any thoughts? There are multitudes of repair places and individual repairers in NYC, and many who visit people's apartments, but we clearly need someone who knows very old iMacs intimately and is not afraid to approach the problem.

Jul 20, 2008I got a white iMac G5 about a year ago. Everything has been working fine until recently when I started to notice that its REALLY SLOW. What I mean by this is that whenever I try to open an application, load my widgets or basically do anything, it is really slow and Im seeing A LOT of beach balls. Just as i started typing in the title for this tread, it gave me a beachball. This computer is not that old so it should still be running smoothly.
Does anyone know why this is happening?
btw: I have 1GB of RAM, but it still operate really slow when I only have a few application open.
OS X :: Processes Taking Up All CPU On Blazing Fast IMac
Mar 19, 2009A long time ago this other process, called Safari, but with the default application icon, started using up 70% of my CPU. I know they are different processes because: I can see both processes at the same time in the processes list when Safari is open, it still takes up 70-100% even when the REAL Safari is closed. Also, no matter what it open, Now there's two! You know how the root application reports crashes? Well, apparently it's reporting millions. It's using 70%-100% of my CPU too! A bunch of other root programs are taking 20%-30%, so that totals up to over 250% of my CPU!

1) iMac #1 had the 1tb Seagate drive, loud and grumbly
2) iMac #2 also had the loud 1tb Seagate drive, plus yellow tinge plus gray line at bottom of screen
3) iMac #3 (upgraded to 2tb drive, but yellow tinge (worse) and gray line at bottom of screen

I've installed XP via Boot Camp. The internal drive in the mac is 230gb (total), and I allocated 60gb to XP. I formatted the partition to NTFS (not quick), and completed the rest of the setup. I then inserted the Leopard DVD and installed the boot camp drivers. Then I downloaded all available updates for XP, and the only other thing I've installed is Mozilla Firefox. I've also made changes to the system using an optimization guide (link below), and the performance seems to be the same before and after.

The performance is very sluggish. It shows most while scrolling. It's not smooth and jitters a lot. On previous installations of XP on this computer, I've run audio software (Pro Tools/Cubase) and the performance is terrible. It can't handle even the simplest of tasks.
On the Mac OSX side of the machine, however, performance is fine. Everything runs smoothly.
As far as I know, the specs of the computer are pretty good. I can't understand why performance wouldn't be up to scratch
So, I'm just wondering if anybody has any ideas on what's going on? Is this normal, or am I missing something? It seems like Windows isn't using the full power of the hardware.

But if i come to download something on my Mac or Xbox, it is slow as fudge :P
I am downloading the update for BFBC 2 on xbox atm, and it has taken me half an hour to do 14% and it took my mate (who lives about 10 min walk away from me) about 20 mins to complete the whole thing...

Dec 16, 2008Originally my iMac G5 (1.6 GHz 17 inch) was failing to boot up. It would get to the grey screen and the apple and it would just stay there and pretend to be a rocket ship with it's little fan whirring as fast as it could after five minutes. So I reset the SMU, fan stopped, still wouldn't boot. Booted it off the 10.5 install cd (which it was running fine until it wouldn't start up). It wouldn't see the Macintosh HD for a while unless you went to disc utility > partitions and changed it from current to one and instead of applying just let it sit there before switching it back to current. Took about 10 minutes of sitting there.
I did disk repair said there was no problem. Disk permission repair said there was a few problems and said it repaired them. To be safe I backed everything up using target disk mode (where the fan tried to play rocket again even though I reset the SMU), erased my hard drive and reinstalled. Now it shuts down randomly when it goes idle, and takes 10 minutes to start up past loading the dock to load the apple bar Mac HD icon and whatever is on the desktop (which is a single empty folder).
IMac :: Making Loud Whir When Fast Switching Enabled
May 16, 2009I was watching WWDC 2003(panther intro) this morning, and I only just learned about Fast Account Switching from it. So, right after watching, I went to system preferences and enabled fast switching. However, right after I did this, my iMac made an unusually loud whir, which I assumed was the hard drive loading some files, although I have never heard it do this before. After about a minute of hearing this, I assumed that something was wrong, and I quit all applications other than system preferences, and when it didn't stop, I disabled Fast Switch. The iMac quickly quieted down. After thinking about it, I realized that I only had 1GB of RAM in the machine, which may cause the system to use virtual memory. Would having 2GB or even 4GB make this not happen, or would I need more than that? I never have noticed the iMac lagging in other areas, but would RAM help in general tasks too?
