IMac :: Setting Memory Configurations In I7
Mar 2, 2010
My question relates to memory configuration. If I buy it with the minimum 4 gig, I think that's 2 2 gig modules. Can I buy two third party (OWC or Crucial) 4 gig modules and add them, giving me a total of 12 gig, or would have to get rid of the original 2 2 gig parts? If it's possible to mix the 4 gig pairs with the 2 gigs, will there be any negative performance issues related to that? If I can mix them, do I need to worry about who I buy the 4 gig parts from? Lastly, any positive or negative comments on OWC or Crucial (or other suggestions) for memory in general?

Call me crazy but are we all assuming the Nehalem Mac Pros can operate in triple channel mode based on the memory configurations suggested by Apple? I can't find anywhere on Apple's site or in the user manual that spells out the ability to run in triple channel mode. I know the integrated memory controller can operate in dual or triple channel mode. Being dual only would explain the number of memory slots. Can any owners of the new Mac Pros confirm triple channel operation? Or has anyone seen it documented one way or another by Apple? I'd love to be wrong...

Is there any way that the default stack memory limit for a user in Mac OS X Lion? You can you ulimit in Terminal.app to display information, you cannot change any values.
This is what is returned from ulimit when you try to change the stack memory size.
user@MacbookPro:~$ ulimit -s 81920
-bash: ulimit: stack size: cannot modify limit: Operation not permitted
Also, the default value is 8192KB which is approx. 8MB. That is weak, especially on my 2011 iMac with 16GB of RAM. I mainly do scientific programming on my Mac (Fortran). These programs usually require a larger stack size. One option is to allocate data to the heap but that is very slow.

So I ordered a 6 core mac pro and am waiting for it to ship, but in the meanwhile I have a question about ram configurations. I already have 4 x 4 gig ecc 10600 ram. I also realize that according to techs, using all 4 slots will put the mac pro from triple channel ram to single channel as opposed to 2x dual channel. Knowing that would I see better performance with 12 gigs in triple channel configuration or 16 gigs in single channel configuration? Money isn't an issue here as I already own all of the ram.

I have just bought a dual 2.8 8 core Mac Pro and am after a little advise on how to get the best from its hard drive performance. The machine is all stock apart from the 8GB of ram I bought with it.
I will us the machine for my business as a commercial photogrpher (stills only) and using the Mac OS only. Games and TV are of no interest to me with this machine as it will only be used with PS CS3, Lightroom, Capture One Pro and the like.
I am looking at adding some hard drives but wanted some pointers as to what to do. The machine is still in its box so nothing is set up, so ideal to change anything at this stage. I understand the stock 320GB HD is pretty rubbish so was wondering do I get somthing else in its place? If I do, is it simply just a case of taking the 320 out and replacing it with something better and then just booting the machine from the supplied setup DVD's to set up the new HD?

I have carried my laptop on a road trip using motel's free wifi access to the internet. Back home the selected network now wants me to enter the WEP password which I don't remember. Is there a way to retrieve the password without resetting it? More than one computer is on the network - the laptop I left behind remembers the password. Is there a way to retrieve the password from this computer?

How to connect my powermac g4 to the internet. I was told that it has the "built-in ethernet" and that all I need to do is config it so it will pick up the wireless signal from the router on the main family computer. But whenever I go to config the network connection, and check the status, it tells me that the built-in Ethernet is not plugged in. Do I not have the built in ethernet? I just want to connect to the internet, but I don't want to spend over $120 to have geeksquad come and do it if I can just do it myself.

I'm currently setting up two 1TB hard drives as mirrored RAID drives.
Seems easy enough to do through Disk Utility, though zeroing out the data takes about 1.5 days for each drive, due to their size I assume.
Will it be easy to migrate these drives to Snow Leopard?
Will it just be a matter of adding them to the RAID list in SL's Disk Utility? Will it recognize them automatically?

I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router (v. 6), a brand new iMac (Intel, OS 10.5.4), and an older iBook (G3, OS 10.3.9). I can configure the router using the iBook with no problems. Afterwards, the iBook shows an IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Router under the iBook's Network Preferences. The iMac detects the wifi network I set up using the iBook (for example, "mywifi") but cannot obtain an IP address or other configurations. Sometimes the iMac says Airport has a self-assigned IP address but can't get on the Internet, sometimes it says it has no IP address. I have removed all WPA securities/encryptions to simplify the process, but the iMac still can't see the router. I tried to ping the router from the iMac and no packages were received, 100% loss.

I have a 500GB time capsule that I sue to host my iTunes music and library. I pointed iTunes to the TC folder where the music is. Then I did control+click on the iTunes icon and pointed iTunes to the library which is also located at the TC. As long as I don't restart the computer it works fine, I can open and close iTunes and it finds the library ok. But every time I restart the computer I have to tell iTunes where the library is. Is there any way to configure iTunes so it does not "forget" the library's location?

I connect with my MacBook Pro via ethernet to the internet. So far, I've never had a problem until a couple of days, I keep on loosing the internet connect. When clicking through diagnostics, ISP, Internet and Server show first organge then turn red. If clicking through the diagnostics, sometimes I am lucky and it shows a message saying "Network configurations have chnaged", when I click ok, I'm online again. But very often nothing helps and I have to re-start the router again.

I don't know what the deal is. I'm trying to install 2 sticks of 2GB into my 7,1 iMac, and the screw just won't turn. I'm using a standard Phillips head, and nothin' doin'. The screw is now starting to strip, so I guess I'm going to have to take this into the friggin' Apple Store just to have them open the thing.

I'm going to install a 120gb SSD in my 27" iMac core i7. Currently I have a 2TB Hitatchi drive installed. I would like to install OSX as well as all my apps on the SSD and then keep all my user files on the 2TB drive. I'm trying to figure out the best way to get this set up once I install the SSD.
Right now I have all data, apps and OSX on the 2TB drive. Here's what I'd like to do. Once I install my SSD I'm going to do a fresh install of OSX and my apps. Then I'd like to remove OSX and apps from my 2TB drive and only keep my user files on it. My questions are ...
1. What's the best way to remove OSX from my 2TB drive? Do I have to erase the disc and then load all my user files once its been erased.
2. Also, is it ok if I keep OSX and all my apps on the 2B drive as well as my user files but still boot from the SSD? I would only be accessing my user files on the 2TB drive but wonder if I can still keep the OS and apps installed at the same time. Assuming I could but it would kind of be a waste of space, right?
3. Once I get both SSD and 2TB drive set up how I want them, I need to regularly back both of them up using CCC. I have a 3TB external drive that I backup to. Will I need to create 2 partitions on it, one for the SSD and one for the 2TB? I would like the SSD partition to be bootable incase the drive ever fails I wont miss a beat. I'm assuming to back both of them up I would need to create separate partitions on my external drive, one for the SSD and one for the 2TB.

I currently have a Netgear DGN2000 router connected to a PC running Windows XP. Tomorrow my new iMac is arriving, and it will replace this PC.
How do I set up the router on the iMac? Is it as simple as plugging it in or will there be settings that need changing or anything?

Here's the deal - I have a baby at home (which means tons of pictures and video) and I wanted to figure out a way to best set up my gear to get the most out of it. I was thinking of using the iMac as an Internet/Media Streaming Machine and Use the Mac Pro for all my work/Photoshop/Editing stuff. Any thoughts?
And then there is Time Machine and the Apple TV - I have lots of stuff and am not sure the best way to set up my time capsule (1TB).

I have recently moved from windows to the iMac and will be moving all of my photos. I do just casual, family photos and landscapes etc. Nothing professional. I have purchased Aperture for cataloging and to make it easier to find things as well as editing. There are probably experts on this out there so I am asking for recommendations on how to set things up. I used Adobe PhotoShop Elements which had an excellent tagging system, but want to move to Aperture for this.

I want to send a signal from my guitar processor to my iMac for recording in applications such as Garageband. Using the digital line-out from the processor I tried to connect to iMac using a 3.5mm stereo cable. However, when trying to set up a track in Garageband I could not get an input signal. In the MIDI/Audio app I have set input and output devices to built-in devices, and in sound preferences I have set the track to receive from the line-in jack. I messed around in Garageband with all the input options for the audio track but I still couldn't register a signal, yet my processor LED meter shows it's outputting fine. Do I need a special cable or something? I can't understand why this topic isn't fully addressed in the supporting literature for Garageband or Logic or in the iMac OM.

as it happens just came back from a small apple store nearby with the intention of buying the unfortunately I found a display related blocker... : it turned out that the exposed 27" had banding problems that were clearly visible when you opened (for example) a full screen terminal window with 100% opaque black background; if you did, you could see as at least that 27 imac showed very good black levels for over 3/4 from left to right of the display, but as you looked towards right the remaining 1/4 of the screen presented a mild gradient from black to grey that was particularly noticeable in the right edge and bottom-right corner of the display.

I was wondering what the default Audio MIDI Setup values are supposed to be on for the internal speakers on the new 21.5" iMac. This is what I currently have at the moment.
I was hoping someone could do a quick check of their own settings and let me know. Is there any reason to or difference to have the Hz at 44,100 or Bits to 24?

Curious as I want to match the speed and pre-order another 4gb of ram (2x2gb) and didn't know what speed they went with?
I assume its as easy as the old iMac's as far as a screw underneath the screen and snap them in?
Also just curious about if their was a brand name on the memory they used - not that it matters just curious?
I ordered base 4gb ram and I am guessing its 2x2gb and I here it has 4 slots so I will buy another 2x2.

I have an 40 GB SSD installed on my 2010 iMac 27" with a 2TB HDD hosting the users folder. I was running Transmission and encoding a DVD when I was told that I am out of Virtual Memory and must restart.
My question is: will using the SSD for Virtual Memory affect its performance down the line (as they should not be written to too much.) If so, how can I change my virtual memory storage location? *Xupport didn't work.

While browsing around I've stumbled over a few references to things like "tri-channel memory" and such. From what I understand (not that good with these things) some computer architectures / CPUs are optimized for using 3 memory modules, and some for using pairs (2 or 4).
I just read some benchmark tests of the i7 with different memory configurations, and the 12Gb was is most cases on par or better than all the others when it came to performance, even better than the 16Gb one. Is the new iMac (i7) best suited to use 3 memory modules?
