Mac Pro :: Setting Ideal Drive Configurations?

View 9 RepliesMy question relates to memory configuration. If I buy it with the minimum 4 gig, I think that's 2 2 gig modules. Can I buy two third party (OWC or Crucial) 4 gig modules and add them, giving me a total of 12 gig, or would have to get rid of the original 2 2 gig parts? If it's possible to mix the 4 gig pairs with the 2 gigs, will there be any negative performance issues related to that? If I can mix them, do I need to worry about who I buy the 4 gig parts from? Lastly, any positive or negative comments on OWC or Crucial (or other suggestions) for memory in general?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI have just bought a dual 2.8 8 core Mac Pro and am after a little advise on how to get the best from its hard drive performance. The machine is all stock apart from the 8GB of ram I bought with it.
I will us the machine for my business as a commercial photogrpher (stills only) and using the Mac OS only. Games and TV are of no interest to me with this machine as it will only be used with PS CS3, Lightroom, Capture One Pro and the like.
I am looking at adding some hard drives but wanted some pointers as to what to do. The machine is still in its box so nothing is set up, so ideal to change anything at this stage. I understand the stock 320GB HD is pretty rubbish so was wondering do I get somthing else in its place? If I do, is it simply just a case of taking the 320 out and replacing it with something better and then just booting the machine from the supplied setup DVD's to set up the new HD?
I'm in the market for an internal HDD to use as a dedicated TM backup drive. The 2 TB WD Caviar Green is going for about $90 on Amazon right now. Seems like it might be a perfect TM backup drive? It's not that fast, but does that really matter for a TM backup? It's also quiet and doesn't use a lot of power.
View 16 Replies View RelatedSo I ordered a 6 core mac pro and am waiting for it to ship, but in the meanwhile I have a question about ram configurations. I already have 4 x 4 gig ecc 10600 ram. I also realize that according to techs, using all 4 slots will put the mac pro from triple channel ram to single channel as opposed to 2x dual channel. Knowing that would I see better performance with 12 gigs in triple channel configuration or 16 gigs in single channel configuration? Money isn't an issue here as I already own all of the ram.

First of all I'm really new to external HD and stuff so pardon me if I get any terms wrong.I just bought My Passport 500GB and wish to format it for: Read/write on my Mac Leopard OS, Read only for Windows XP/vista. (Even in read-only videos still can be played, right?)What would be the right format? I DON'T want it to be FAT32 since it almost corrupted my friend's HD. I've heard about NTFS but got really confused about it.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI intend to burn close to 30 hours of home HD videos on hopefully HD disks like Blu-ray. I tried the Toast 9 and successfully burned a 15 minute HD on a regular DVD however on my MacBook 2.16 GHz with 2 GB RAM it took few hours for encoding.
Question #1: can any hardware piece ie: elgato's Turbo.264 will make a siginificant difference in encoding time
OR...
question#2: I need to shell out money for a powerful Mac Pro with an internal 3rd party BR burner (about $500), and if so, then what are ideal specs, dual core, quad core...RAM size, video card speed...etc.
Just recently bought a MBP and noticed how hot it will be when I am running WoW. (I saw it reach 100 degrees on istat.) after searching through the forums, I just downloaded smcFancontrol. Problem is, I have no idea what is an ideal temperature/fan speed. Basically, I have 3 questions:
1) Is there a max temperature the MBP should run at?
2) If I use smcFancontrol, should I use it at max setting (6200rpm) to keep my temperature down to the ideal temperature?
3) If I use a leather casing (Macally) for my MBP, would it seriously impair the MBP in terms of cooling?
When i play games, cpu temp runs about 80C , do you think this is not safe for mbp ?What temps must it be running ?Does it have protection against having high temp and shutting it down ?
View 3 Replies View RelatedI shoot about 40 weddings per year. (2500-3000 images per week). I am currently working off a 2 x2.66 Dual Core MacPro with 11GB of memory. I use Aperture and a bit of Final Cut Pro.I need the MacPro for storage issues related to iTunes and photo libraries so I have ruled out an iMac. My question is, when will I cross the "overkill" line. I don't spend my days doing intensive 3D render outputs of math computations so I know a 12 core is "too much".
View 18 Replies View RelatedI'm a FCP / AE / Compressor user and have been in the market to upgrade my painfully slow G5 for years now. I'm pulling the trigger on a 2010 and trying to decide the best set up. I'm going with a 12-core but thinking the 2.66. Not sure if the extra $1200 can be justified to go to the 2.99. Anyone have an opinion?
I thought with that $1200 I could get more RAM instead. So, my second question is what the best move would be for RAM. I'm going with the base offering from apple and will remove and replace with either 2 or 3 8GB sticks or more 4GB sticks.
I am running XP on VMware 2.01 and I was wondering what are the best settings to run it at. Is their a downside to have it running 2 cpus and max ram as well? Will OSX go really slugish? It says something about memory swapping occuring, what is this?
View 10 Replies View RelatedHow to connect my powermac g4 to the internet. I was told that it has the "built-in ethernet" and that all I need to do is config it so it will pick up the wireless signal from the router on the main family computer. But whenever I go to config the network connection, and check the status, it tells me that the built-in Ethernet is not plugged in. Do I not have the built in ethernet? I just want to connect to the internet, but I don't want to spend over $120 to have geeksquad come and do it if I can just do it myself.
View 2 Replies View RelatedI'm currently setting up two 1TB hard drives as mirrored RAID drives.
Seems easy enough to do through Disk Utility, though zeroing out the data takes about 1.5 days for each drive, due to their size I assume.
Will it be easy to migrate these drives to Snow Leopard?
Will it just be a matter of adding them to the RAID list in SL's Disk Utility? Will it recognize them automatically?
Does the 15" MBP have the ideal resolution for day to day office work (email, docs etc..) and to play the occasional game or is it even too low for this? My feeling is that the 17" MBP resolution is too high for office work and would be too small to read. What is the "perfect" resolution when doing office work on a 15" screen?

View 2 Replies View RelatedBut, sometimes I'm confused because of OS X's symbols of ctrl, shift and option keys.
So, I slightly photoshoped the image from the Apple website and I believe Apple should follow this design someday.
Just look at the ctrl, shift and option keys, then you'll find something changed.
I have a Linksys WRT54G wireless router (v. 6), a brand new iMac (Intel, OS 10.5.4), and an older iBook (G3, OS 10.3.9). I can configure the router using the iBook with no problems. Afterwards, the iBook shows an IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Router under the iBook's Network Preferences. The iMac detects the wifi network I set up using the iBook (for example, "mywifi") but cannot obtain an IP address or other configurations. Sometimes the iMac says Airport has a self-assigned IP address but can't get on the Internet, sometimes it says it has no IP address. I have removed all WPA securities/encryptions to simplify the process, but the iMac still can't see the router. I tried to ping the router from the iMac and no packages were received, 100% loss.

Then I did control+click on the iTunes icon and pointed iTunes to the library which is also located at the TC. Is there any way to configure iTunes so it does not "forget" the library's location?
View 2 Replies View RelatedCall me crazy but are we all assuming the Nehalem Mac Pros can operate in triple channel mode based on the memory configurations suggested by Apple? I can't find anywhere on Apple's site or in the user manual that spells out the ability to run in triple channel mode. I know the integrated memory controller can operate in dual or triple channel mode. Being dual only would explain the number of memory slots. Can any owners of the new Mac Pros confirm triple channel operation? Or has anyone seen it documented one way or another by Apple? I'd love to be wrong...

Looking for advice for setting up my 1.5 TB external backup drive. I think I would like to partition it into 2 drives one 500gb for Carbon Copy Cloner (or Super Duper) and the second 1 TB for Time Machine. The drive is a WD 1.5 TB My book and it came FAT32. Should I re-format this to Mac OS Extended (Journaled) or leave it as it is for the purposes of backing up? I really don't think that I have any files larger than the 4gb although I could have some ripped DVD's before Handbrake sizing down to iPhone size. What about the files that came with the external drive, are the worth installing or just go with the popular backup choices? Oh please let me ask this question as well, what cable connection to the my iMac is recommended? I was wanting to use Firewire but they only provided a 400 to 400 cable and I think I need 800 to 400.

View 24 Replies View RelatedI have a 1Tb Iomega Minimax attached to my Mac mini that has started acting strangely.
It would appear that some of the file names have become linked to other files on the hard drive.
Example - I can double click on an mp3 file that used to be fine, but now a video file gets played that is stored elsewhere on the Minimax.
It only appears to be some of my files. I use this drive mainly for mp3 and AVI video storage so the mix ups are typically between these file types.
I ran disk utility but it says the drive is fine. Is there any other Mac software that can help me figure out what the problem is and maybe fix it?
I've never seen a hard drive do this before, and my Mac experience is pretty limited!
Is there any benefit to ordering the MAC Pro Raid card for setting up 2 x 500gig SATA drives in a Raid Zero configuration? Or..Is this accomplished just as well via software in leopard??
Apologies if this is a stupid question - but just wondering if I can save some $ by not having to order the RAID card without giving up anything.
I will use a 3rd 1TB drive for Time machine for back up.
I'm trying to make my laptop as mobile as possible and I'm wondering what I need to buy to accomplish this.
I would like to be able to access my external hard drive [s] wirelessly. I currently have three external drives, and I would also like to print wirelessly [which may be a problem because I have the Epson 595 ].
What would you recommend I purchase to make this work? Do I need a second laptop to run as a 'server' or can I just get something like the AEBS or can I use my existing Linksys router somehow?
Can I setup time machine to backup an external hard drive if I have another external hard drive? I don't have any files on my laptop but on an external hard drive. Or will time machine only work on files in the internal disk.
