IMac :: Display Quality - Setting Blacklevel And Banding?
Nov 24, 2009
as it happens just came back from a small apple store nearby with the intention of buying the unfortunately I found a display related blocker... : it turned out that the exposed 27" had banding problems that were clearly visible when you opened (for example) a full screen terminal window with 100% opaque black background; if you did, you could see as at least that 27 imac showed very good black levels for over 3/4 from left to right of the display, but as you looked towards right the remaining 1/4 of the screen presented a mild gradient from black to grey that was particularly noticeable in the right edge and bottom-right corner of the display.

I set up my refurb imac 24" 2.8ghz and discovered several horizontal grey and white bands on the screen during start up. It's not as noticeable on a photo background but is there when using a web browser with a white background.

I'm experiencing external video banding/noise on a 2006 iMac (2GHz, Core Duo, 20" screen) when using Apple's video adapter (RGB to RCA/S-Video); I use it to connect my iMac's video output to my TV.
The noise is basically diagonal lines running top to bottom/left to right across the TV screen. They are faint and are more like ripples in the screen. It almost seems as though it's not grounded correctly.
I noticed this issue when I first got the computer; I switched the adapter back and forth between my iBook and the iMac and the noise was only evident on the iMac's output. I called Apple and they refused to deal with it, suggesting it was due to the video cable length (20 feet) even though the iBook was fine.

I have a quick question regarding the image quality when connecting my Mac Mini to my Samsung Monitor 24'' monitor. I am connecting it through a HDMI -> DVI adapter and connecting it through the DVI on my monitor. Although it does display the image, the colour look off, it doesn't look sharp or high definition at all. I checked the resolution and it shows up as 1920 x 1080, which should be very good, but the resolution doesn't look good at all. I am wondering if this is because I am using a 24inch monitor and whether I should try getting a HDMI cord to connect HDMI to HDMI from the Mac Mini to the monitor, or get a HDMI > VGA adapter instead, or maybe buy a better monitor?

I am about to buy a Mac Mini and want to find out how it works with using a 1080p (Pioneer Kuro) TV as a monitor
How does it look on the TV i.e. especifically what's the quality like?
I am sure many people have done this, I am probably going to be using a digital cable (ToSlink) for the sound and a Mini DV to HDMI cable for the video

I just purchased a 24in Cinema Display for my MBP and I was wondering how the Sound Quality is? Is it similar to the sound quality of the iMacs? Or should I go out and get a set of nice speakers.

I'm thinking of switching my up coming iMac purchase to a new mac pro. Obviously, I would need to buy a monitor but this site says updates are due soon. Just curious... what do you guys think a new display would offer that a current one doesn't. The biggest one they have now is more then enough and I like the picture quality. What else besides size and resolution could they upgrade?

I have a late-2008 Macbook Pro 13" 2.53 Ghz Unibody with the 512 MB of vRAM, and a a mid-2009 Macbook Pro 15" 2.53 Ghz Unibody with 256 MB of vRAM. I have noticed an incredible difference in the quality of the screens, including the brightness. My 15" seems to be very bright and vivid compared to the 13".

I have noticed something strange that occurs occasionally on my MBP (i5, latest gen). The display seems to have "noise" in the quality of graphics. It's hit or miss when it happens, and a reboot stops it temporarily. It returns after a few days.
I'm going to the Apple store today, but thought I'd see if anyone else has this issue. I am a little touchy about MBP graphics (had issues in the past

I want to upgrade to a apple LED 24" Display or if apple invents a 27" LED one and I want to hook it up to both my MacBookPro 13" And my gaming PC. I know i'll need a KVM but need assurance it will work with all the converters. Can the 3 Apple cables be split up, video, Power ,and usb as I will use Power and USB on the Laptop, I'll need to go from display port to dvi, then dvi to to the KVM video switch box (Whats the TREDNET TK207K KVM switch like) Then from one of then dvi to dvi on my gaming pc and on the other dvi port all the way upto my macbook pro mini display port. Can it be done because I know too many converters will not work

I'm using a MBA connected to a 52" TV with a 1920X1080 resolution when I teach. I often turn mirroring on and off depending on what I'm teaching and what program I'm using. When I turn mirroring on it defaults to a 1400X1050 resolution and I have to manually go into display settings and change it to the higher resolution. Is there a way to set the default settings so that it will always default to 1920X1080?

My macbook pro has an issue with banding periodically across the bottom portion of the screen. Usually a little twist of the screen or tap on the back fixes the problem but lately it's being very stubborn. I'm wondering if this issue is an LCD issue or a cable issue. I'm hoping it's a cable issue as the problem has been very periodic. I've attached a couple pictures of the problem.

Love the idea of the big screen, but I'm wondering if the massive bump in resolution will completely spoil lower quality video files, and whether or not I'll be able to really use all that space for full screen video without massive degradation in picture quality. I'm planning to use the iMac as a second TV, and when I bought my HDTV one of my main concerns was its ability to upscale SD content. It can satisfactorily display pretty much anything I throw at it, while many of my friends' TVs display lower quality SD material as an unwatchable mess. The iMac should be able to handle far more complex upscaling algorithms, but does Snow Leopard actually provide upscaling out of the box when I stretch a video I'm watching in VLC? If so, how well does the 27" screen upscale low-res content? Do YouTube videos or low quality video files become unwatchable on a screen with such high resolution? Do they look significantly worse than they would on, say, the 1280x800 screen I'm using now? I don't want to be forced to watch sub-HD content in a tiny little window relative to the size of the screen if I can help it.
Might I be better off with a 21.5" iMac with lower resolution, which ought to be slightly more forgiving with full screen SD content? I know there are plenty of uses for the 27" screen beyond video playback, and I'm not knocking the machine at all. Just trying to buy something that will best serve my own specific needs.

Started archiving all my old photos and creating dvds. started off using iphoto which is great for compiling a quick slideshow to a couple of music tracks. i then imported these to idvd and created my first dvd project which i was pretty pleased with for a first attempt. The only thing i found annoying was that i could not link all the slideshows together in idvd so that they played one after another, instead you had to come back to the menu and start the next one...so i thought i would import these slideshow movies into imovie and create a complete movie with chapters, titles etc. but when i did this i noticed that the quality of the slideshow in imovie was very noticeably worse.
being new to mac i wasnt sure what was up so i thought about importing the photos directly into imovie and working with them there. but once again the quality was really poor compared to the iphoto and idvd slideshows. after this i though maybe its just a preview problem and all will be well when i burn them to dvd and watch them on tv...so i burnt a dvd with one slideshow created in iphoto and imported into idvd and also put on a movie of the same slide show that id imported into imovie and back.
anyway long story short quality still better in slide show created in iphoto.

In FCPX 10.1.3 I was able to set in Preferences the Playback Quality to High Quality. I just purchased FCPx 10.1.4. It has NO such High Quality Option for Playback Quality.
Now all my still clips are blurred badly. Is there an option to set a High Quality Playback Option. Or can I download 10.1.3, the level where that worked ?

I have a 14'' iBook and recently bought an LG 19'' Widescreen monitor. I am testing a Dell 17'' on it right now before I open the LG one, but my problem is that the same screen shows on my ibook and the external. This isn't what I want. I have read you are supposed to be able to close the laptop and then it shifts to the external display but this is not working for me.
This is my goal:
Use my bluetooth keyboard full time
Have my ibook closed at all times
Have my external as my main display
How do I make this work?

I'm new to the forum, but not necessarily new to Apple. I have a aluminum MacBook and have it connected via display port to a Dell monitor (have a cinema display on order from macmall due in tomorrow!). My question is while I have the MB connected to the display, is there a way I can have the laptop lid closed and prevent the computer from going to sleep?

I'm having an issue where the sound is playing from the internal speakers and rather not the built in speakers. (The speakers that play the OS X DURRRR and Ear Breaking Memory Beeps) I've tried upgrading the Realtek Audio Drivers from the site and Snow Leopard CD to no success. Does anyone know how to fix this. It's not like this in Vista, but I can't play my games in Vista because I dun have enuff RAM.

Just switched my new iMac and it has the dreaded dog whistle, not as pronounced as my previous 3 replacements which were last generation.
I was hoping the new rev would have ironed the atrocious quality control.
I still have yellow discoloration but I can't be bothered. My lady needs a computer and she doesn't want PC. I'll give it a few more days and if I can tolerate the whistle I'll hang on to this one.
At least there is no dead pixels.
