IMac :: Low End Of 24inch Screens Good Enough?
Mar 4, 2009
I plan to use it for basic home stuff such as photos, video editing (basic), t'internet etc. I dont plan to play any games on it (i have a ps3 and a wii which do a much better jobs me thinks). The question is this: will the low end 24in imac be good enough? there seems to be a lot of negative comments round here on the graphic card. also on a not less serious note, do you find the screen too big on your desk. Is it overwhelmingly big?

I'm debating on whether to get a Macbook or Pro, but what's holding me me back is screen quality and resolution. Is the Macbook screen good enough for movies? Does anyone have any pictures comparing it to the Macbook Pro?

My grandparents broke their 24in Imac's monitor and it needs a replacement, costing around 800+ dollars. I was wondering if it was possible to operate it with a second monitor and have that one be the main computers display. Is it as simple as connecting the second display or do I have to disconnect the internal monitor? I'm not worried of opening up the computer, its not like I can damage the screen edit: The Imac is out of warranty and is a 2007 or 2008 model. 2.4GHZ C2D 4GB Ram. If you need any more info just let me know

My imac made louder then usual sound for awhile. At first i thought it might be my HD, so i replaced it. But the sound came back. After few days however, it resided. But now, it's too damn quite. So, using few software utilities, to check up on the temp of the fan, it was only registering 2 out of 3.

This appears to be a really informative forum for existing and potential mac owners. I'd like to start, as a "Mac noob" by asking the following please. Thinking seriously of getting an Imac 24" but I would like to be able to edit HD (1080) video on it down the track. Would an Imac cope with this or would a Mac Pro be better (or overkill)and which would be most efficient, the 2.66GHz, 2.93GHz or a 3.06GHz, if I went with an Imac Video card NVIDIA GeForce GT 130 512MB or a # ATI Radeon HD 4850 512MB. Having trawled through the threads, from the beginning of August(I'll go back further later), it's clear that 4 Gb of RAM is certainly enough.

I purchased and installed the Commell MPX-3132 in place of my Airport Card. Installation was very easy and the RAID drivers work perfectly. I cloned my HD to my SSD using CCC and everything shows up fine via ESATA and USB. When I try to boot from it via ESATA it is not recognized, but it boots perfectly from USB. I Booted to it via USB and installed the RAID drivers onto the SSD then tried to boot via ESATA again with no luck. The SSD I bought is the Corsair Force 120 and the enclosure is a Hornettek usb/esata [URL:...] I haven't had a chance to test another enclosure.

I have a problem with my iMac 24inch Graphic card. Actually I decided to install windows7 on my iMac 24inch early 2009. After the installation of its graphic card (Geforce GT120), the iMac turns off suddenly after a while. I tried to find the solution but I was unable to recognise it. A friend told me that the problem goes back to the bios(firmware) update and I have to update it, but as I'm currently using windows7 I have no idea how to do that.
Info:

Seems that the more I read about refurb imacs the more I notice dust on the inside of the screen
I have two specs of dust trapped on mine, they haven't annoyed me yet but I'm considering getting suction cups and cleaning it. Would this be the best approach or sending it in?
I haven't done it and I'm slightly scared to do it

While me and my friends were trying to figure out possible causes of this issue on LED screens, someone came up with the brilliant idea that the problem could be caused by the sound speakers. His recently LED TV had the same problem. He found out that what was causing the yellowish tinge on his TV were the Sound Speakers. Volume speakers use magnets, so the magnetic field was screwing up the colors on his tv tending to yellow.
After having removed the Sound Speakers the yellow tinge disappeared in about 2/3 hours. I tried this on my led screen laptop with a magnet I had in the kitched, and guess what! It worked, color changed, not for yellow but it changed for sure. The Sound Speakers on new IMacs are near yellow tinge, that's why some people are getting it worse. I've reported to apple. Faulty design Quality Control. If you have his tell us if you're using internal or external speakers. This may lead us to more clues.

Are there any iMacs that have High Definition screens? I've seen people selling High Defintion iMacs on eBay but is it true? Are the external Apple monitors High Definition, too?

I'm in desperate need for a new computer, for Gaming/school work.
I Am very interested in the New 27" Imac quad core-i7...but I'm scared.
I have read threads upon threads about the screen flickering/yellow glow and such and my question to you all is, when to buy my new imac?
I want to buy it without these problems of course.
Does anyone know when Apple will be fixing all these problems? (If they havint already)

I know they just updated them in March but I'm wondering if they're going to get the quad core or core i7 processes anytime this year? Also, starting June I believe is the going back to school promotion. Basically you get an ipod or touch for free after rebate, right? Can you still get the $100 student discount off?

I'm currently saving my pennies for a new Mac Pro and a 24inch ACD.
For owners who game, is the ACD's 14-second response time a problem? Is there a lot of noticeable ghosting? I play mostly fps's (CS:S, Day of Defeat, CoD, etc...) so this is a big issue for me. I'm dead set on the LED ACD so this is the only potential issue that's might hold me back

Desperate to replace my now too old G5 power Mac, I decided to order a new 27in i mac. I was cheerfully informed by the assistant in my local mac shop that I would have to wait six weeks or so and he would put me on a waiting list. I felt this was unreasonable and thought I had found a clever plan to get something better. So I bought a new 24in display, attached it to my newish laptop and away we went. After a short while I found the whole experience a little lumpywith six connections every time I wanted to take the laptop home. I bought a used power Mac instead, an intel duel 2.66 power mac. I have found out today that according to Apple that there is no connection to be made from the mac to the display, I am gutted and fed up. The display has a bunch of cables coming out, only one choice, mini DV1. The computer has DVI. No adapter is available apparently. Anyone have any suggestions apart from spending nearly ?300 on a Radeon 4870

I have read a few posts of new i7 users posting various stats on their machine. I am specificaly interested in the gpu performence (without OC). I am a traditional tower pc guy, but i have slowly but surely been able to convince myself of the relative merits of going loaded imac i7 over low end MP (the least of which is the horrible value and waiting 500+ days for no real improvments other than having the base now include a few bto upgrades to save you a few hundred bucks...but dont get me started).
Anyway, back on message, NAS solves my concerns about extra HD's, the cpu is certanly fast enough, mem not an issue...so my only concern is gpu.
Just looking at it from a price perspective, i am not sure how comfortable i am that a $130 graphics card will keep me fat and happy for 3 years (tech refresh assumption). I don't need a $600 cards, but when i have typicaly built pc's, the last few years, a $300 or so card has kept me happy. With the imac, it appears that switching gpu's is not easy or something i will probably do during its warranty covered life cycle....
So how good is the card (sorry it took so long to get there). I am a somewhat power home user...not professional, but i probably fall under the label i saw floaing around on another post as someone using 500 bucks of sw to load up raw images of their cat...or in this case kids and a golden retriever. I love games, but to be fair, my xbox has replaced most of my need for quick fps. 27in is a big screen. Can i play most games at full frame/speed extra? I assume photo shop cs5, et will work fine.
i really am on the fence on which one to get, i guess next week hopefully i can really price compare them, but the MP just seems to be such a god awefull value that its hard for me to jusitfy buying the low end model...my legacy prejudiceness against all in ones is taking a bit to get over...the imac seems to be the obvious choice.

I'm planning on getting the SSD + 2TB drive option for my new iMac and using the 2TB drive as a scratch disk for final cut (as well as my itunes media drive and a few other things). My question is will this much use on the drive be bad for it? Right now I'm just using external drives and when they fill up I get a new one so I don't put as much use on them as I would with the 2TB drive where I plan on just archiving the footage onto a external hard drive when I am done with project and then continue using the 2TB drive for my next project.

I bought a new iMac a couple of weeks ago, it's my first alu one but I've had two of the white plastic ones before. The sound from the internal speakers in my old iMacs is pretty acceptable for day to day usage (not playing music of course), but the new one sounds horrible... extremely tinny. So is this just what they're all like these days? If not I guess it's got some issues:-/

while the drive in my macbook pro a few years ago was just plain terrible, i've had no issues with the one in my 24" imac. however, i'm looking to burn some audio cd's for my little record label.
so how good is the cd burning capability? i've made some discs in the past, when i was still using a PC and i bought a very high quality external burner for $80 or so canadian, and when i checked the errors it was comparable to a pressed cd. unlike the homemade ones i used to do before that didn't play on some systems.
i'm looking for a cheap way to do batches of twenty or so discs that will play on everybody's computers and cd players. however since most people these days rip them to mp3, i don't want to make a big investment. i will however be buying high quality cd-r stock and printing attractive images to the tops.

So after getting a new 24in ACD, after my original ACD had a power supply issue, I am starting to notice that on a black screen (black power point slide shows it the best or a movie in widescreen) there are a few areas on the black screen where there are areas of white when the screen is on. I don't notice any dust under the screen. I am only 3 days into the 14 day return policy, so I am really tempted to just head back to the Apple store and swap it out for another screen. I didn't have this issue with my previous ACD, just the power supply issue.
