I'm sure this should be simple but I can't figure it out.
I have my iMac connected to my TV and am using Plex to watch stuff on the TV.
What I'd like to do is turn my imac screen off without turning off the second monitor output (i.e. tv) as the imac screen is a bit bright/distracting (even on lowest brightness) when watching in the dark.
Is it possible to make the imac g5 lcd screen into a normal lcd screen that connects to a normal computer through something like VGA?
View 7 Replies View RelatedI know how to dim the screen, and I'm using Shades to help with that, but I would like it turned completely off.
For example, if I'm burning a DVD overnight, I want the screen to be completely shut off, instead of lighting up the room like it's the middle of the day.
I like to keep Folding@Home running on my Intel iMac 24/7, but at night I would like to turn the screen off but keep the CPU going.. is there a way?

After having inserted a dvd borrowed from the library which my Imac had a really tough time reading, I turned off my Imac as usual. Since then when I turn my mac on the fan starts roaring and i don't get beyond the first white screen with the sort of clocked wheel just going round and round. I don't have a clue to what to do.

View 5 Replies View RelatedI'm not entirely sure how long my iMac has been doing this, maybe two weeks? When I try to wake it from sleep, the screen does not turn on. At all. At first I thought this was because my mouse and keyboard might not be functioning correctly, naturally the only remedy was to turn the computer off with the power button and to restart it (which took an abnormally long time). Today I remote connected with Back to my Mac screen sharing and it did not turn on either. I know it was awake because when I pressed the brightness buttons on the keyboard, it responded on my MBA's view of the screen. Normally, Back to my Mac does turn the screen back on. Anyone else have the same problem? It doesn't seem to matter WHEN it goes to sleep either. I've tried resetting the PRAM already and no dice.
View 1 Replies View RelatedMy parents recently bought an iMac. Yesterday my mom was playing a game when the computer froze. Neither force quit or holding the power button was doing anything so in her frustration she unplugged the system. Today, after plugging in the system again, it won't turn on.
I press the power button on the side of the wireless keyboard and the green light on the keyboard turns on for about 3 sec and then starts flashing. No fans start up and the screen does nothing.

This situation began when I put my Imac on sleep. After, the screen turned on in black whit the cursor but I couldn't do anything.
Then to rebooted the machine, the apple logo and sound began fine but the screen turned off, so moving the mouse the screen turned on in black with cursor.
I'd tried many ways, resetting the PRAM, SMC, repairing the disk and permission, analyzing hardware, repairing fsck files.
Suddenly, when I entered in Verbose mode, mi imac brought into user choose screen and worked fine, but when I shut down and tried to start my mac in the next day, it didn´t work again.

Its kinda hard to describe but in all apple apps post SL (finder, safari, mail) the top of the window has taken on a distinctly brown hue, I know I am not being paranoid (hopefully?). The picture doesn't actually show it that well, but hopefully you will know what I mean.

It's inside the very thin crevices of the L-shaped protrusions around which you tie the power cord that connects to the MacBook.Anyone here has any ideas about what this substance may be? Is it simply lubrication or leakage from the power unit?
View 1 Replies View RelatedI had an initial thread in Mac Software as I initially thought it was just a Safari 4 Beta issue.(Original thread here)But since then, it's spread from Safari 4 to my trash can and now to Numbers and Pages (It has not done anything to Keynote), the bottom panel (but not the top one) in Yahoo messenger... Even the silver navigation bar on the Apple website shows up as this weird metallic brown. What's even weirder is that the trash can is the normal silver metallic when the OS first loads and then changes to the brownish one. No amount of messing with display settings helps. Resetting the NVRAM initially got everything back to normal, but then boom, it's all stuck.

Computer starts (keyboard lit, music plays, caps lock light on), but no screen. I need to open and close 2 - 30 times before the screen will turn on. Once on, the computer works perfectly. I've tried PRAM and safemode reset.

i just got this Imac G3(second Hand) when i turn it on it makes theseound and starts loading ( just like normal) but then it says: disk: 0x8 (UNDEFINED) and then it is more like a command promt rather than a user interface

i have a macbook with osx and when i go to turn it off, all the icons disappear and i am left with just my desktop picture and that small little loading black thing. I don't what to do, i have tried waiting a long time but it never turns off, i usually end up having to hold the shut down button which feels dangerous to my comp.
What should i do... is it a virus or something else?
oh, and sometimes some of my programs wont shut down even after force quit.
I have a 2008 White body model Macbook with 2 gigs of ram and 2.1 core duo processor. My problem is that the screen won't turn on...when I start up my computer it lights up for a second, but turns off before the apple sign shows up. If I look really close I can see everything. Oddly enough, if I press the brightness button so to decrease the brightness to the very last bar and then hit the f2 button to turn up the brightness by one, the light will turn on for a few seconds, if i continually go back and forth, I can sort of use it enough to do something with it (thank god because I had all my work for school on it). I have included a link with this thread so you can see what I mean.
View 4 Replies View RelatedI have a problem with my mini/quicktime setup and i was hoping for some help from you all at macrumors...
Here is the setup
This system is setup for a admissions office in which we have a mac mini set up to a LCD screen that is all mounted on a wall.
we have the mini on timer to come on from 1230-5pm and when the mini comes on, quicktime is set to automatically open and play the admissions video.
Now here is the problem:
when I turn on the LCD every day, the screen is blank but Ican still hear the video, I figured it was in hibernation so i move the mouse and hit the keyboard and nothing. i need to push the power button and hold it for a couple seconds then the movie comes on but the video is choppy.
here are the specs on the mini: 1.25 power pc G4, 512 Ram.
its old but its only function is to play this video...
Is there a way to make it so that instead of my screen saver turning on, I can have the display turn off? I know I can set it to automatically do this after a few minutes, but I use a hot corner to turn my screensaver on, and would like to turn my display off when needed instead. I see no reason to keep the display powered just to show a pointless picture. I know I can hold down the decrease brightness button until it goes all the way down, but is there another way? I have a Unibody MB.
View 7 Replies View Relateda few hours ago my mac froze up so i reset it but when i turned it back on it was just gray with a folder icon with a question mark in the middle blinking. i then turned it off and left it alone for a few hours and when i went to turn it on again the screen is just gray with the apple icon and the loading icon under it, which is what always comes up when i first turn it on but it wont change, its been the same for like a half hour now.
